It really isn't a no brainer. EU is a slightly larger trading partner, and physically closer, but the US is a larger economy, growing much faster and has consistently been more aligned with us on key economic issues.

The CU and SM were offered by EU in the brexit negotiations as an attempt to keep UK close to EU family because they were unsure of the real effects of UK withdrawal on the whole EU project. Now that these effects are known and largely positive for the EU, there is no need to grant these generous incentives again. UK will have to seek full membership and all that that involves, or nothing.

And this is a big part of why trying to go it alone is a terrible idea. US (Trump) lost his trade war with China and has no new ideas for round 2. Singapore manages very well without being in group like the EU; the US certainly does very well and it isn't (likewise, Australia, etc.). I've always found it curious that the two most successful countries in Europe (switzerland and Norway have only a semi-detached relationship with the EU). Being non-aligned can sometimes be very useful (we don't have any tariffs on Chinese cars, for example, and it's possible we may avoid most US tariffs). There was a German economic report from 2014 that said the UK only benefitted form the single market by about 1%; other, much more integrated economies such as the Netherlands, Germany, etc. gained much more. That tallies with what we're seeing now, tbh - little clear damage and nothing like what was forecast.

The US tech giant were nearly all founded in the last 40 years; Europe has no equivalents and where they do emerge they move to the US! The EU tends to protect the status-quo at the expense of the future. While the US was betting on AI, Europe bet on diesel engines and posh handbags! Both, but the EU is much more aligned with us, our culture, our way of life, and the shared experiences of the war. The EU and UK are frankly more advanced civilizations, which can hopefully survive a little longer. But give us some notice, will ya. Like minimum 5 years. Time to get rid of our investments in your T-bonds (which finance your procurement with US military contractors like Lockheed, Boeing, and Raytheon, not only for use in Europe) and use the proceeds to build up our own military economy. We have plenty of capable military contractors (Airbus, BAE, Rolls-Royce, etc) to give that money to. Thanks.

There's no doubt the EU has taken a declining share of UK exports. Still important but the trend is clear.

The CU and SM were offered by EU in the brexit negotiations as an attempt to keep UK close to EU family because they were unsure of the real effects of UK withdrawal on the whole EU project. Now that these effects are known and largely positive for the EU, there is no need to grant these generous incentives again. UK will have to seek full membership and all that that involves, or nothing.

Exports to the EU were declining as % share of UK exports since 2000 so we've already had to replace them. Our trade deficit became utterly disastrous with the advent of the single market (in proportionate terms it's double that of the US and China, and the US is on the verge of war about that one!).

Singapore manages very well without being in group like the EU; the US certainly does very well and it isn't (likewise, Australia, etc.). I've always found it curious that the two most successful countries in Europe (switzerland and Norway have only a semi-detached relationship with the EU).
Being non-aligned can sometimes be very useful (we don't have any tariffs on Chinese cars, for example, and it's possible we may avoid most US tariffs).
There was a German economic report from 2014 that said the UK only benefitted form the single market by about 1%; other, much more integrated economies such as the Netherlands, Germany, etc. gained much more. That tallies with what we're seeing now, tbh - little clear damage and nothing like what was forecast.
