চারিদিকে নিস্তব্ধতা, মৃত নগরীর পথে দু-একটা মানুষ। মৃত কোলাহল আর অব্যক্ত ইতিহাস যেন জড়িয়ে আছে এ নগরীর প্রতিটি ইটে। পথের দু’ধারে কালের সাক্ষী হয়ে দাড়িয়ে থাকা ধ্বংসপ্রাপ্ত ভবন আর কাঠামোগুলো যেন হারানো জৌলুসের কথা জানান দিচ্ছে। প্রায় ৪৫০ বছর আগে এ নগরী কতটা সমৃদ্ধ ছিলো, তা বারবার ভাবতে বাধ্য করে রাস্তার দু’পাশের দু’তল-ত্রিতল ভবনগুলো। পানাম নগরের পথে হাঁটতে হাঁটতে মনে হতেই পারে, ঈশা খাঁর আমলে চলে গেছেন। কেমন যেন একটা রহস্য জড়িয়ে আছে জায়গাটিতে। প্রতিটি ধ্বংসস্তুপে যেন জড়িয়ে আছে একেকটা কাহিনী। যদিও ধ্বংসস্তুপ বলছি, তবুও এর আকর্ষণের নেই কমতি। ভবনগুলোর নির্মাণশৈলী দেখে মুগ্ধ না হয়ে পারা যায় না।
একসময় বাংলার রাজধানী ছিলো সোনারগাঁ। তাই সোনারগাঁকে কেন্দ্র করে গড়ে উঠেছিলো ব্যবসা-বাণিজ্য, বন্দর আর নগরী। সোনারগাঁয়ের ভৌগোলিক অবস্থানের দিকে নজর দিলেই এর গুরুত্ব বোঝা যায়। সোনারগাঁ চারদিক থেকে চারটি নদী দ্বারা বেষ্টিত- উত্তরে ব্রহ্মপুত্র, দক্ষিণে ধলেশ্বরী, পূর্বে মেঘনা, পশ্চিমে শীতলক্ষ্যা। এমন ভৌগোলিক অবস্থান ছিলো ব্যবসা-বাণিজ্যের জন্য উপযুক্ত। তাই ১৩৩৮ সালে ফখরুদ্দিন মোবারক শাহ এর আমলে বাংলার রাজধানী ঘোষণা করা হয় সুবর্ণ গ্রামকে, যা পরে সোনারগাঁ হিসেবে পরিচিতি পায়।
১৩৪৬ সালে ইবনে বতুতা চীন, ইন্দোনেশিয়া (জাভা) ও মালয় দ্বীপপুঞ্জের সঙ্গে এর সরাসরি বাণিজ্যিক সম্পর্কের কথা উল্লেখ করে সোনারগাঁকে একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বন্দর-নগরী রূপে বর্ণনা করেন।

Sonargaon and Panam Nagar
Sonargaon was once the capital of Bengal. Therefore, trade and commerce, ports and cities were formed around Sonargaon. The importance of Sonargaon can be understood by looking at its geographical location. Sonargaon is surrounded by four rivers - Brahmaputra in the north, Dhaleshwari in the south, Meghna in the east and Shitalakshya in the west. Such a geographical location was suitable for trade and commerce. Therefore, in 1338, during the reign of Fakhruddin Mubarak Shah, the capital of Bengal was declared the village of Subarna, which later came to be known as Sonargaon.
In 1348, Ibn Battuta described Sonargaon as an important port city, citing its direct trade relations with China, Indonesia (Java) and the Malay Islands.
An elite class was gradually formed around the capital, who were mainly merchants or traders. Due to the aristocratic living conditions, traders and merchants from other areas used to stay here. At that time the upper class people were in need; For the convenience of their business, some cities were formed in the golden villages. The city of Panama is one of them. The inscription on the entrance to the city of Panam shows that the city was expanded by wealthy Hindu merchants in the early 19th century. The area was famous for its muslin and indigo trade.
How to get to this city
Panam Nagar is a 30 km road from Dhaka. Panam Nagar is located in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj. Sonargaon can be reached by bus from Gulistan to Narayanganj. You have to get off at the corner of Mogra Para. From there you can go to Panam Nagar by CNG powered autorickshaw or easybike.
