My Telsa lost its power steering...or so I thought! Back in the shop!?!?!

  • My Tesla went back to the shop to get checked out for a power steering problem. Watch and see what the problem was. No car brand is perfect, including Tesla. But with fewer moving parts under the hood of an EV, the likelihood that you will have a problem with your car is greatly reduced. I'm also impressed by the shop being able to pull diagnostic logs from the car remotely before I brought it in. No other car company that I know of does this.

    I want tio thank you and your video!! I have had the same issue with my Model 3. I sent the video to Tesla Leeds UK who used the video and sucessfully diagnosed and resolved the steering assist no power steering. The OTA diagnosis came up with a quote for replacement steering system rack @GBP3.1k parts and labour. Tesla Leeds resolved the issue with removal of the ground bolt and firmware update and it worked!!!! I am so grateful for your video as the total cost was 1 hour of labour. Life saver! THANK YOU SO MUCH

    Thanks for the video. My Tesla is out of warranty as well and I just had to replace the HVAC Compressor Bracket (part was only $25 from Tesla SC). The bottom dampener mount broke and it was making a rattle sound and you could feel vibration in the floor and steering wheel when the compressor was running. Easy replacement, took me 1 1/2hrs, but could do it in 20 mins now I know what I’m doing.
    When I was doing the replacement I saw grease/oil on the outside where the rack and pinion connects to the steering wheel. Looks like it’s seeping through the seam and out the top. Found your video trying to see if anyone else has this issue
    So far all the power steering failure videos have been related to grounding or complete failure of electric steering assisted motor. So maybe I don’t need to worry about the leaking seals that much..

    Appears you were fortunate in that the service center was able to accommodate you without a significant weeks long wait. Good deduction on your part about jostling of the car causing the fault to appear. All those faults from one loose ground connection would seem to be reason for Tesla to be exceptionally concerned about that particular connection point. --- Control arm issues seem to be fairly prevalent with Teslas (guessing engineering was not quite up to the task regarding control arm design.)

    Same issue. Less than 1k miles on my M3. Got it home, made the call to service. They pushed a firmware update that fixed it. This really is just a modified Ubuntu box on wheels...lol

    Recently, during our rains I saw a M3 that appeared to have lost control and spunout into the fence on the right side of a 3 lane expressway where speed limit is 50 mph. Definitely, scary and Tesla should check every car via recall just because this is possible NHTSA SAFETY issue.

    Glad it was something minor! I just dropped my 2018 Model 3 @Tesla because my front lower control arms need to be replaced and then I need to have a wheel alignment. Cost $1,250!! I had the upper control arms replaced 3 years ago.

      I'm assuming you're out of warranty too? I've had my upper control arms replaced too. It's a shame they don't make those ball joints serviceable with zerk fittings to add grease, so they make you replace the entire control arm!

    Hey there! I encountered a problem with my car, a 2016 Model S 90D with around 140,000 miles (approximately 226,000 km) on the odometer, during a trip to Denmark; the steering suddenly became extremely difficult to manage. After consulting with Tesla, it was discovered that a leak from a four-way valve had caused significant damage by corroding electrical components, particularly affecting the connection to the EPAS system, as well as the steering rod and wiring harness. Tesla has already replaced both the four-way and three-way valves to prevent further leakage. They also mentioned that cleaning the corrosion could potentially resolve the issue. However, their standard procedure involves replacing the damaged components, which could end up being quite expensive. They advised me to look for an alternative workshop capable of cleaning the affected electrical components as a more cost-effective solution. I'm reaching out to see if you or the comments could offer any insights or suggestions on how to approach this problem. Do you think this is something feasible, and do you have any thoughts on how it could be done?

    Fewer moving parts under hood of an ev does not equal greatly reduced problems lol. I've only had my tesla one year and have had to bring that into the shop about ten times for all sorts of issues. For your year of car, i'm surprised your running into as many issues as my 2016. If not worse than mines.
    My old 2013 corolla I've never had to take that to the shop once for any issues. All i did was do my own oil changes. my 92 camry same thing. in all the years i owned my toyota's not once have i had to bring it to the shop. My tesla on the other hand, the SC is vampirically draining all my money.

    Unfortunately my power steering is gone on my 2018 model 3. They haven't taken it in for a physical diagnostic test yet but they did give me an estimate of 3,700. I don't have any alerts up on my screen regarding it but I can definitely tell that the power steering is gone. I think I'm just going to order the parts on eBay and try installing them myself because that price is outrageous

    • @BecauseTesla
      @BecauseTesla  4 місяці тому

      Just so you know how Tesla service works, they always quote you the highest price. $3700 is for a new steering rack, motors, sensors, and anything else in the steering system. That’s worst case scenario in case they have to replace it all. When they actually get the car in the shop, they can plug it in to get diagnostics to find the real problem. They will then give you another more realistic quote. It may not be a bad steering rack. It may be some other component that costs a few hundred dollars. That’s been my experience anyway.

      I've owned several cars that have not had power steering, so it's not a big deal to me. A quick reset brought it back, which I couldn't do on my older cars. It really wasn't a big deal. It's fixed now. Not sure which coolade you're talking about. I still own several cars, and I love them all (both gas and EV).

    My model 3 rear wheel drive was 2 weeks old when i had my first over the air software update.. it was in the evening, so the next morn, when i tried to move my car, i had the steering warning appear.. i thought there might have been a slight change made and it was making me aware of it.. not the case.. it felt like i had an old ice car and i was trying to turn the wheel with the engine off.. i called for service and a tech called me back, instructing me on how to use the 2 scroll wheels to reboot .. after rebooting my problem was solved..

I told the tech the screen went dark and I was going to release the wheels.. she told me to continue to hold them in for the full 30 seconds.. after a short period, she said, "ok, it has been 30 seconds, release the wheels".. maybe that would make the difference between your reboot and mine..

      hahah, I was wrong. Thats good it was just a ground. It's weird what little things can do. Glad you got it working!! $235 is not bad. The rack is actually pretty easy to replace. The part itself used is about $250. Thanks for sharing!! Great video!

    • @BecauseTesla
      @BecauseTesla  Рік тому

      @@WinstonsGarage Great guess! Yeah, a simple wiring ground was loose. I'm amazed that Tesla's diagnostic tools can pinpoint exact locations to look for issues.
      I had some PCS work done a few months back, so I'm wondering if Tesla didn't tighten down the ground bolt. There's no way to prove it either way, so $235 for peace of mind is not bad. I'm not scared of DIY, so if my steering rack does go out, I may look into swapping it out myself. Thanks!

    Lol! And yal swear by your EVs? I don't have to sit around like some kid in time out. I'll keep my buick lacrosse (hybrid) 7 minute fuelling times and that includes running in and grabbing a coffee. My range is 402 to 408 miles. And at 20 grand it's paid off. My next car is the Toyota Prius (hybrid) same fueling times but range is 625 mile, far greater than any EV. Just what i need for my yearly travels. Hybrids works...
