If U2 wrote Winter Hill it would be known the world over.... as it is, I'm glad I know of it, mainly because the vast majority of people wouldn't appreciate it
U2, as with many bands, represent the centre of the musical 'Overton Window'. This means that they appeal to the middle-ground. The average. Mediocrity. Doves, on the other hand, are above this level. If you listen carefully to U2, you'll find that everything is mathematically calculated; the rhythms, the chord structures. I know which band I'd rather be in, and it ain't the one led by an arrogant git who charters aircraft for his hat.
Doves is and has been a very underrated band. Back when I first heard this song when I had started college - the song matched the freshness of winter and everything new :) Great song (Winter Hill)
His bass has just got lots of natural gorgeous woody tone - his playing style is so laid back and straightforward (deceptively so) it really needs a good sounding bass I think - luckily the Precision delivers in style ;)
I've always loved Doves but recently I just fell for it proper. I live in Wigan and often take the dog for a walk up Winter Hill. For the last 2 weeks my girlfriend has asked me to shut up because all I sing now is: "Climb the long grassy track, to the top of Winter Hill." OOOoooooh
I have just come back to watch this after posting a comment over 6 months ago. It is still superb. I just hope and wish Doves will do more of the same in the future. Looking forward to Jimi and Guy Garvey doing something, should be special. On the subject of Guy, how good were Elbow at Glasto? It was pure magic, what it's all about. I watched knowing this is something more than just music, it was the crowd and band as it should be, as one. The setting sun, everyone there will never forget it.
Same here. Albums are in two systems around the house...Pulled one of them out to listen to The Beta Band, but their tunes have just bloomed like these rare flowers that I dont want to get rid of. Doves are sheer quality. Hopefully theyre here for the long haul. Rest of the music loving planet just needs to get in touch with this best band few people seem to know about
For some reason the BBC didn't include it in their extended highlights. The BBC had technical difficulties on the night which meant that their BBC2 coverage on the evening was corrupted by audio dropouts. My other upload of Firesuite and Kingdom Of Rust as a twosome is from the BBC2 broadcast before the audio went wrong. What's worse is the radio broadcast missed out the first two tracks and then talked all over Firesuite!!! Grrrr.
totally agree, he is always rushing! His feel is rushed every time. SLOW DOWN. He is a few parts of a second too fast on every beat. Follow the singer dont lead him. You dont need a click track to do it, and speed changes can be good, listen to Hendrix. But in that band the drummer FOLLOWED.
Doves are my favourite 'secret' band. I've stopped telling people to check them out. Hopefully Jimi, Andy, Jez et al are comfortably well off - so they don't need to be in the mainstream. Let's keep it to ourselves , eh?

Also check Roundstone (ex-Keane guitarist band) just released new album also very good, very British sort of mix between Radiohead-Coldplay-Muse and well Doves.
