    "There's no copilot, how can I code?"
    Anyone who thinks like that should be deeply ashamed and review their life decisions.

    i just don't understand why someone would use a less featureful editor? zed keeps toting speed, but really?! for a text editor running on a 4Ghz CPU, how can there possibly be any difference between two editors for speed?? nutty... thanks for showing me zed though so I know to avoid it now :) good video!

    One complaint I have is that I can't seem to set default window size. It just opens nearly the hole screen, not even max.

    Looks nice. But feature-less. No way this could replace vscode or come even close to replacing it.
    Perf is nice tho (for something that is lightweight with no features this is obvious).
    Let's see this Zed editor, when it becomes more robust.

      It already replaced vs code for me. The featureless appeals to people who hate slow bloated plugin IDEs. I’ve been using it for almost a year and won’t go back.
      For others they won’t leave VS code because they want the plugin experience

      @james-perkins Exactly! I just fixed an issue with vs code that prevented git from detecting changes and checking out branches, took me two weeks of suffering with it, lost 3 days worth of work and lots of hair, and it turned out to be some random extention (:

      @@Fr74n Yes, plugins are hard to "debug". Because they are community made. So this is something VSCode could improve on.
      This aside, I couldn't even tell how much time those plugins saves in a long run. Yes you lost 3 days. But how much time plugins saves? Of course if you use them wisely.
      Simple most basic example: there is plugin that sorts lines alphabetically. If you have object that takes 1000 lines, you can select it and sort it. How much would it take to do without such plugin? (I don't know if zed has this feature built in, but lets assume it doesn't).
      And this is just very simple example. Do you really think your typing performance or file operation performance ms matters compared to time consuming manual work that are bottle-necks in time consumption ?

      @@coolemur976 While I can't explain how frustrating it was to disable each extension then restart vs code, this makes me think whichever editor is going to take the next step into improving the extensions system, is probably the one that'll win.

      @@Fr74n Microsoft should just add disable checked functionality and that would ease the "find the bad plugin" work. But feature-wise VSCode is better and won't be overtaken anytime soon. This is because Microsoft backs it.
      Yes, you can have stripped text editor which is very fast. But... simple example - zed doesn't even have git integration yet (only very minimal which is unusable). Let's wait until it has features. Then we can talk about how performant it is.

    It has to be built with something other than electron to compete, ergo be makedly faster

      @james-perkins  Рік тому +13

      Good news it’s built not on electron. It’s built on Rust + GPUI

    Zed seems overhyped, no Linux/Windows support, can't use it over a SSH tunnel, very feature limited compared to VSCode, and honestly anyone considering Zed should just use Cursor or neovim

    • @james-perkins
      @james-perkins  5 місяців тому

      What if you hate cursor or neovim? It’s supposed to be limited unlike vscode which is why’s it’s faster and less resource intensive

      @@james-perkins neovim literally runs in your terminal, you can't get any more low impact than that, I tried Zed out and saw no real gain to using Cursor, and for some context, for the same project at idle Zed is taking up 2% of my CPU's resources, Cursor is 1%, and the Terminal process running tmux+neovim is using so little it shows as 0%

      Dude zed is new . They just open sourced it like months ago. Development is racking up speed now. Linux and windows versions are being made and features are being added. It will also support extensions soon. As of now it’s been a pleasure using zed even with just the features it has so far. Give it time and it will mature . Zed is a game changer
