I hope UMC is better than it was in 2012. My late husband and I were visiting Vegas from CA. My husband got sick so I took him to UMC. The waiting room was packed and took hrs to get in. Once we got in they gave my husband a pain shot and told us to go back to our regular Dr ,Even though my husband was still in pain. I wound up driving back to ca in the middle of the night and took him to our local hospital. By the time I drove home 5 hrs my husband was white as a ghost. Turned out he had a hole in his Intestines and needed imediate surgery. He never recovered. He was 51. If you can use any other hospital but UMC do it. Sharon from Orange county ca
I'm sorry for your loss. I was at Sunrise, multiple times( for my mom). And just like you said. The hospital rooms were packed. No matter what time of day, ER waiting room has so many people there. Hard to walk around...just in the waiting room.
25 years las vegas resident... i had open heart surgery at valley hospital..and my wife kidney transplant at umc.... las vegas healthcare is world class...
My husband had an eye infection (he has an autoimmune disorder that affects his visiion) and we went to Urgent Care off Rainbow while we were visiting in Vegas. The NP gave him meds that correctly treated his infection likely overkill but he was rid of the infection on our teip home. I have no complaints as the care was as good or better than we would have gotten at home.
I live in Henderson. Right now in in Sunrise on Maryland getting treatment for a jaw infection. I have no complaints. I’ve been here since Thursday. Several specialist doctors are consulting with me, with on Doc coordinating everything them all and making it easy to understand. All nurses & other personnel are great. I guess your treatment depends on your personal attitude & the type of illness you have. I’ve noticed some patients here are a real-pain-in-the-ass. Oh well, that’s the story of life.
I moved to Las Vegas in 1999. I went to St. Rose for blood pressure issues and the care was great. I once fell off of a ladder and went to North Vista hospital and they took care of me quickly, and set up my physical therapy sessions. Nowadays I go to the VA Hospital in North Las Vegas and have a good primary care doctor at the VA clinic in Henderson.
Maybe you can get care for little things in Vegas. Try having a heart attack or cancer. I've had four heart attacks, and I now have cancer. It only took 4 months to get testing for cancer here, even after they found nodes in a CAT scan. I couldn't get a mammogram during Breast Cancer Awareness month even though there would nodes in my breasts. Today a doctor told me I had cancer. She couldn't tell me more about it at all because "the report is 9 pages long." SHE SAID SHE DIDN'T UNDERSTAND IT. What kind of "doctor" can't read a lab report? Why didn't she have someone explain it to her? Oh, that would help the patient, and patients don't matter until it is time to send them a bill. 😡
My wife and I lived in Vegas for two years. She was chronically ill and doctors had no clue how to treat her. (not that anyone else did in other locations we lived) but most of the GOOD docs left Las Vegas due to stupid malpractice lawsuits... but most hospitals tried their best, but we had to leave because doctors were clueless about my wife's condition.
I've been doing research on hospital care in las vegas. I work in health care and me and my husband are considering moving to Vegas. However, reading the reviews at all the hospitals the Las Vegas area scares me. No one wants to work at a place with a bad reputation. Me and my husband both have medical issues and I can't imagine being mistreated by hospital staff when I need care. The reviews and rankings are bad for Vegas
Hi, was told by a couple of nurses working at a Hospice by the University that the health care ranks near bottom because of pay and work load. The nurses told me that the care giving providers are under stress to perform. They stay working at the Hospice because they are not pressured. My mother received such horrible care at a rehabilitation facility, behind Sunrise Hispital that she picked up a VRE UTI. Had to go back to the emergency room after being there. I went to the Neuro Surgeon that used to treat my mom to let them know that she won't be coming to follow-up. He had about 20 patients waiting to see him. Good luck in your search.
You have an attorney in Las Vegas there. She wrote 2 books on elder care and what you have to do or need to watch out for. May you never go thru the grinder that my mother went thru. If you do have to do an extended stay in a facility...(outside of main hospital) Watch out for each other.
@@JJ_Neptune that's true but there's a lot of good caring stories out there about nurses and doctors treating their patients well and actually listening to them too.
LV is on my short list for retirement. But Healthcare situation is a concern. Example , LV only has one Level One Trauma Center. Which is no big deal(til you need one). Phoenix has like 4-5. Also not sure about Cancer Treatment or Heart Dr. in LV. Which are 2 conditions that affect older people. I have read that LV lacks many A+ Specialists. Good news about the Medical School. That sounds encouraging. Pls keep us posted.
I’m an RN, never worked in Vegas, but have heard the ED’s are pretty brutal to work in because of the heavy drinking and decompensated mental health issues by visitors.
Great video as always!! Would you ever consider doing a video on owning pets in Las Vegas & the dog parks & pet friendly areas in Vegas? That’d so useful for people moving here with pets!! Thank you!!
Curly that’s what im curious on is how pet friendly Vegas is! i work in the animal industry & plan on getting a pet when i move there, just really wanna make sure i have plenty of places i can bring my future pet! Thanks for the reply😁
Had to go to the hospital right after moving here last year and 1 other family surgery with different health plans and hospital; so far it has been fine. Generally specialists are available from my experience, whereas primary care physicians/GPs are much harder to find. As in your other video, finding insurance PPOs outside of employment other than EPOs is pretty much very limited.
Once? I've had four heart attacks and shattered my tibia. Now I have cancer. The hospitals in this city are staffed by incompetents, and they have policies that prohibit helping patients because it isn't COST EFFECTIVE.
My wife is a medical professional, with almost 20 years expierence. She has worked in multiple states. While she has not worked in Nevada, the stories about the level of care, especially versus California, is not good. 1)Part of the problem, is an expending population where the health care sector is not keeping pace 2) In the NorthEast and West, wealthy donors are funding the building facilities, which leads to more research, better technology and the like. After all, who wants their name on a building that is not top notch? 3) The medical schools. Better medical schools attract better medical students. Given that medicine is largely taught through hands on learning (intership/residency etc) where you train matters. Do not know the stats, but I would also garner to wager (it is a vegas vlog) that students concentrate around where they study. Yes, you are free to go elsewhere, but why leave the familar? Lastly, I would imagine that demographics and population will help improve health care, just hard to "catch up" without large investments of cash. Nevada health care system just does not have the cash infusion right now, to catch up. My guess, people with the means, who needed specialized care, would just go to LA, or the Bay Area for better care near by
I'm on the same page you are. Right now I'm close to world class medical care. UCLA Westwood and Cedars Sinai . I feel your concern. I'm already retired and could pull the trigger on a move whenever I feel confident that ALL my ducks are in a row.
I'm in Pittsburgh, which is similar with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (I assume that wouldn't be well-known in LA). When I was in the hospital as a child, there were kids from as far as Saudi Arabia that came here for medical care.
Same here. I am considering LV for retirement in a few years. Lack of quality Healthcare is biggest negative for LV. I am monitoring the situation for now.
They just take forever to schedule tests. There to booked for heart test and sleep studies. Nevada Medicaid sucks! Silver summit doesnt cover alot of things they should. I've had nothing but problems with insurance and scheduling in timely matter. But I was in and out E.R. quickly.
Will be looking for private medical (as well as dental and vision) plan for my wife and I very soon, as job does not cover it for the first 12 months. Any suggestions?
The state ranking are meaningless with regards to your individual needs if you look at the criteria the rankings tend to be based on. For example many rankings count items such as percent of people with type 2 diabetes in the state, the obesity rate, percent of uninsured children, percent of people living below the poverty line, etc. None of these factors have any bearing on you as an individual if you need to go in for a specific treatment. Pull up a google map of the Las Vegas area and look at the number of hospitals, emergency care clinics, pediatric clinics, and specialty care clinics. Las Vegas is awash in these type facilities and these type health care providers, and when you need it, that's what counts.
I agree and disagree. Some of the factors you mention such as uninsured and number of people below the poverty line potentially impact everyone's access and cost of healthcare especially in states that do not have public health facilities to serve that segment of the population. You are correct that Las Vegas has a number of medical facilities and if your needs are first and foremost primary care or other general medical/surgical available services probably are adequate and of quality. Cost, access, and outcomes are also part of ranking criteria. Not sure how many tertiary hospitals, transplant centers and trauma centers are in the Las Vegas area as these would be of concern to anyone who had serious medical issues.
Hospitals in Vegas are unacceptably horrible. I've had four heart attacks. They toss me out without even asking if I have a way home, and I never do. UMC provides NO patient education other than giving you Web pages that contradict each other. You can't even get them to bring you a blanket. Neither UMC nor Valley Hospital EVER changes the bed linens or even brings you a basin of water to bathe with if you're bedridden. It is impossible to get even a tiny bottle of shampoo. "Just lie in your own filth; that's good for your health." They don't give you take-home meds, and they don't even have a pharmacy where you can get prescriptions filled because that isn't COST EFFECTIVE. When I broke my leg, UMC tried to throw me out at 9 pm WITHOUT A WHEELCHAIR because their incompetent staff had the wheelchair sent to my home instead of my hospital room. The ICU at Valley Hospital withheld meds I continually requested. I went into withdrawal while I was on the table having an angio and was sick for almost a year. I just found out I have cancer. I was told it can take up to THREE MONTHS to schedule an appointment with an oncologist. I wish someone would shoot me in the head so I don't have do deal with this horrible "healthcare" system FOR CANCER.
@Brian Waller I love it here. A lot of job opportunities. I used to live in vegas from 1999 to 2015 and i never liked it since the first day i got there. I also think the phoenix metropolitan area is nicer than vegas.

Funny- Tried to get that blue mask for Cigarette Smoke in Casinos... Asked about 5-7 Casinos, Nobody wanted to give to me. Only at Aria the security actually checked the bag and could not find it. Palazzo was nice too, asked their manager of Security but they said it's an item they keep inventory of and can't give it out. All other Casinos the security just said no- even if they were not sure, didn't bother to check. All Casino Floor said to ask Security for the mask and you can wear it Unless they ask you to take it off.

Vegas needs to pass a balance billing law which is where you pay over the insured amount. They are one of the worst in over billing.
