  • Road salt was a central factor in this collapse and the impact of the salt is illustrated. The the likely collapse sequence has been animated.
This bridge collapsed in Pittsburgh on Jan 28 at 6:40am. With zero fatalities. Located on Forbes Avenue over the Fern Hollow Creek in Frick Park. The bridge was listed as poor condition on the DOT database. The bridge was built in 1971. Structural steel illustrated.
The steel type on this bridge called Cor-ten rusted intentionally to form a corrosion barrier. The lower parts of the structure rusted away from de-icing salt. A structural brace had snapped off and this is shown in this video.

    Hello from Pittsburgh!
This was my little group of nerds theory as well! Seeing something we've been talking about for weeks rendered out is... kind of chilling?
Removing the X beams and letting a bridge with this much traffic ride on temporary cables is an infuriating mistake. We are so lucky no one was seriously hurt.
Thank you for this fantastic work. I will be sharing it with other Pittsburghers.

I really appreciate the work you put into these videos. I find them very educational and helpful for a lay person to understand how every little part of engineering works together. Your videos along with others from engineering community have opened my mind to understand complex concepts that I use daily as a parent with a science minded kid!

And wow, the sound design this time. It gave me an eerie feeling at the beginning.

Also, hard to believe they kept the bridge in use for two years, with the "temporary" cables. Well knowing that it was damaged. Wonder what will come out of this.

The most horrible thing in this case is that the local authorities did let people drive over the bridge without proper and solid diagonal support. Second most horrible is that they also let the original support rust away until it broke, before they did something. With this thick material it must have taken years. Where is the supervision and inspection? In my home country this would be impossible. And they do use road salt shitloads every winter here.

The scary part is there is a long list of bridges that are in a worse state. It's just a mater of luck that they are still stading.

True the specially coated steel inhibits corrosion, however once the coating wears off, the steel corroded and disintegrated, the removal of original braces also created a "weak area" the removal of original braces and corrosion, excessive cold combined, weight of the port authority bus and a few cars added was just enough to cause the steel beam to fail, and the cables to easily snap causing it to break apart and fold like an accordion. Painting the steel would most definitely have preserved the steel thus extending the life span of the bridge. Poor maintenance

@@Mike-Bell Whoa, really? This collapse and the one in Surfside, Florida have taught me to be more observant of structures and look for any possible rust or water damage. We are so trusting of city leaders/maintenance departments doing proper maintenance in structures we use daily, but we should keep our eyes open and speak up if we see something that makes us feel uneasy.

see how these people didn't care they knew there was a problem they put up that temporary bracing instead of fixing it the proper way their attitude was it will hold and walked away and never thought about it again until the thing collapsed those who knew about this should be held accountable that temporary brace was shoddy shouldn't have even passed for a temporary brace who's the inspector, that supposably inspected this he should be the first to blame

This was a important explanation of what happened to this building that caused death and injury to tenants. Is there any way to educate the public of warning signs that a building is in troubled that might prevent similar events? In reading google apartment reviews some report uneven floors, major problems with a fine dust needing to be vacuumed constantly, heavy water penetration in ceilings and walls, rat activity in walls, etc.carpenter ants, closet doors, windows out of whack and can't close properly, outer bricks powdery, out of alignment. Can any of this data upon confirmation tell us anything that might educate the public, put more eyes on this and prevent future events. Finally because lives were lost this is definitely a form of murder or homicide however there is blood on the hands of many who looked the other way too long.

Its an important question but with an unsatisfactory answer. Its simply too complex to come with a matrix flow chart that would give you any sort of useful result. But we can rely on gut sense and common sense. If it doesn’t feel right it probably isn’t. These resident knew it wasn’t ok. The tricky part is you pay a lot for good accommodation and less for poor quality and therein lies the dilemma. Live in a tiny box or live spaciously with the potential pitfalls.

It was stupid to make this video so dramatic. A "disaster" with no fatalities isn't something people salivate over. A 15-second soundless simulation would have been more than plenty, if even that. It's ridiculous you made this as theatrical as the Champlain Towers South and Chernobyl videos.

I used to travel this bridge dozens of times a week. Until it wasn't there. The drama in this video is pretty subdued to how I feel traveling on similarly deteriorating bridges around Pittsburgh currently.
