I think another reason why Tooru gets a lot of hate is because his role as the main villain is very different from the main villains in other parts. IMO, the connection between The Wonder of You (Song) and Wonder of U is that it's ironic. Similar to how I Am A Rock is a song about being alone and isolated, but the stand makes you so magnetic that ANYTHING can be attracted to you. The Wonder of You is a love song where the singer is in awe about the woman in his life, but Tooru is mostly concerned about himself. Even his relationship with Yasuho is parasitic and he only comes around when he actually needs something from her/Paisley Park. If she doesn't have anything for him, or she's in his way, he's perfectly fine with watching her die or sacrificing her to heal his wounds.

Jojolion is the most human one I feel. Less grand over the top characterizations and the important parts of the story and the meaning behind those things are in unexpectedly mundane places. This is especially true for the opposing forces of tooru and josuke, both of whom have rather normal personalities when compared to other jojos. This part is extremely focused on nature in general and human nature so having the portrayals of these things (the characters) be more toned down and realistic makes complete sense and is something still new to jojo.

I'm late by 9 months, but "Wonder of You" by Elvis Presley is directed at his mother.
Which comes back to full circle when Tooru sees a Hornet and reaches out for it.
It's clear that he wished for something humans had that he didn't, which is why the one who helps bring an end to his life is Kaato, the mother to all of Norisuke's children.

The original Wonder of You song was like that but Elvis chose to do the cover as a tribute to his mother who died. Tooru is finished off by the Mother of the Higashikatas and his last thoughts are of the hornet he killed because it was the closest thing to a mother he ever knew

Tooru was upset and anxious because he felt like his youthful appearance had caused him to waste years of his life and miss opportunities that should have been his, so he was given a stand that allowed him to take on an older and more accomplished persona, while causing other people to experience a never-ending loop of negative events.
It blows me away how this is lost on so many people. I still think that Tooru was underutilized, but his ability and character motivations blend seamlessly with one another

Something I noticed when you were talking about the rock human origins is that humans and rock humans have a very yin and yang connection which is so cool, love seeing even more daoist connections. Plus that connects to what Yasuho says at the beginning of the part about how a curse is the tension of seeing the world as two separate parts instead of a whole which is a very daoist idea. I adore how Araki’s writing for this character was developed through cheer implication and concept as opposed to outright displaying him as the big baddie. From him being a rock monster (which contrasts with Gappy’s ability to learn and grown as a new being, as rock humans can never assimilate within human society) to him being a reserved and unknown figure throughout the story was a phenomenal touch.
Tooru for me represents the doctrine of the Absurdity of Life, as he constantly seeks human attention and craving it, yet, by his own nature, can never actually receive it. His stand is a acknowledgement of how unknown and strange the mechanisms of the universe are; pursuing anything or having some kind of direct goal is a contradiction to how the universe functions. And the only way to defeat his stand was to have the “Go Beyond” ability break the logic of said universe altogether. I view his ability as a form of acceptance of the premise behind Wonder of U’s stand, and then going beyond it.
Tooru has to be my favorite JoJo antagonist, as his lone appearance in the radio gaga incident perfectly personifies the kind of antagonist he is. Ironically enough, he constantly attempted to rail against his own nature and change himself, and he was ultimately defeated by Gappy’s own acceptance of his place in the universe. This comes after Gappy is resolute in not finding out who he was or what he did, but choosing to live on as Josuke and and forming his own bonds and experiences.
    JoJolion is just masterclass lol

Cuz, seriously, how Yasuho not realize that Tooru never aged? She didnt notice the first time she bumped into him, or the second. It was way later inti the final arc. The weirdest thing is she was aware of the fact that Tooru had always been there all her life, but had not yet realized that he had never aged. But I guess Araki just forgor in that one part.

When Tooru is revealed as the main antagonist near the end of the story, I totally vibed with how strange he was. He had everything that makes main antagonists in Jojo dangerous; perversions, obsessions, ruthless conflict resolution and a logically unstoppable stand. I get that people hate how he is revealed in the final third, but Tooru is teased throughout the part. He can be seen in the final chapter set in the 1940's so i'd like to think he was heavily influencing Morioh for decades, and maybe Part 9 will reveal more about him.

There‘s something I realized a few weeks ago, that nobody seems to mention / maybe even think about:
The flow of calamity really isn‘t that much of an abstract concept; It isn‘t even that specific to the world of Jojo. As mentioned, Araki was inspired by a tsunami and it was often seen, that some animals almost seem to recognize impending natural disasters a few days / hours before they start happening. Humans don‘t really show these kinds of behavior and often times are surprised by natural disasters, while a lot of animals have already fled by then. It‘s unclear what exactly leads to this phenomena in certain cases.
I think a lot of people have already heard about this phenomena and I think it will help a lot to grab the concept of calamity.
There‘s a lot of other media centering around this concept as well. If we just look at Pokemon, we can find Absol, which is centered around feeling impending disasters and trying to warn people. You could say, that it senses the flow of calamity as well, while we humans are unable to

I think that araki used a difficult style in writing And showing Tooru's character, It's different from Josuke in the first chapter, who left strong hints to the story such as the possibility of a jinx stand if you had mista mind, but tooru is generally a mystery character, the less chatter and the more his dialogues contain new information or building events with so many questions and some hints(For example, ask himself if there will be a flood after it rains) in a balanced manner without the need for a long wait, the quality of mystery and dialogue will increase and he did not use clear hints and this is a difficult writing, and therefore many people, especially those who ignore or forget details, have difficulty understanding him, some of them think that WoU is a different character from him,For example, WoU said when he remember Rai's past:I feel nostalgic and this reminds us of tooru،holly said head doctor has no face And although she met him countless times as she said but she does not remember his face after we know his truth it becomes a logical matter.this face hides something else and that it is nothing but a depiction of a face and not an actual face (Treachery of Pictures), The eyes of the stand and also on his clothes tooru and WoU a shape symbolizing the flower of the sunflower also one of the symbols of this flower in China is long life also we have seen in a scene that the eyes of tooru were drawn similar to the eyes of Akifu Satoru ,WoU turned and looked at yasuho when she was suffering،There is also a lot of similarity in their behavior for example WoU treated the journalist who would cause him a problem with kindness and tried to persuade him, but when he did not succeed, he advised him not to chase him and at the same time he warned him that he was the reason to pursue him and thus his death, and some think that he really loved yasuho while tooru wanted to make memories with her(tooru said he wanted to keep her memories with her when he was warning her) And his enjoyment of listening to old songs is often related to memories،he also did not change the shape of his clothes and still bears on his shoulders despite the passage of decades often related to memories lol This is without forgetting that he focused a lot on reminding yasuho of the memories ،it is clear in the flashback that as a child he was looking for his mother's embrace and love, but more than 97% of friendship and love relationships fail But Tooru tries to make up for the lack of love through memories. Even though he ate 🍔, he and his stand looked sad that he ate wasps as he did as a child so maybe when he was helping the child he looked sad often because he reminded him of himself when he was a child weak and lonely And when he was about to die, he realized the feeling of being weak after he was invincible

Tooru's anxiety is VERY similar to DIO's idea of Heaven and Peace of Mind in part 3 and part 6. And as we know the idea of Heaven in very much linked to Fate, which in Jojo is an observable supernatural almost scientific force.
That is what all of Jojo should be viewed through to be perfectly honest, this system of Fate in Jojo described as Gravity. In part 8, it is recontextualize in the new system of Flow which is still incredibly similar to the old system of Gravity in the old universe. And Tooru's character really should be viewed through this lens primarily.
I recommend you watch Hamon Beat's videos on these Fate related topics in the Jojo universe, alongside his two part videos on what counts as a Stand (both in the OG universe and in the new universe). It really gives you a lot of perspective on Araki's design principle taken from official sources (interviews, artbooks, etc.) and it gives you perspective to realize the fact that Tooru and Wonder of U are actually one the most interesting concepts Araki had ever came up with.

I love Tooru's portrayal because he's the only surprise villain we got in Jojo. In every other part, we knew (roughly) who was the enemy. Maybe we didn't know what they looked like, but even the main villain of part 5 was revealed (technically) around halfway through. Tooru was so effective at hiding in plain sight that we saw him, but didn't see him for who he was. Just like Yasuho and Josuke, we underestimated him and just thought he would be a new jobro or minor character or ally, when in reality he was the most effective rock human of them all.

      *seconds later*
Weird guy with a very detailed design who works at a hospital bumps into a main character, has backstory with them, and immediately becomes a romantic rival to the protagonist.
      Truly an impossible riddle.
He even mentions that he works part time like Rock Humans have to. The only dawning realisation I had was after opening yet another volume where every chapter was called "Wonder of You (The Miracle of Your Love): Part 2 Trillion" was that this was it. This was all we were getting. He obviously was going to be a villain, it was just weird he was the final villain. The last hope I had that something interesting was going to happen was that Kaato was going to use a fruit to fuse Jobin and Tooru into the actual final villain to bring her son back to life.

That part about the rock on top of the others was really clever, and a deep interpretation about that speech which I hadn't realized before. It makes so much sense: in a pile, if any other rock than the one on top were to disappear, its disappearance would cause others to shift or fall; but for the rock on the very top (Tooru), its disappearance causes no such results or influences. That one interpretation of the speech really encapsulates the pressure on Tooru and his anxiety on wanting to cause a ripple in the world.

I feel like toorus motivations for money has some of the more personal motivations than any of the other jojo villian, rock humans have to feed off the human population, and in any second they could turn and kill them, they have alot of desperation to just live, they didnt start from poverty and make it all the way up to riches like most villians in fiction, they battled up the entire food chain to get to where they are, they need to become powerful and wealthy enough to have reassurance theyll be able to live at all, they have a very unstable lifestyle, the connections they make can be gone after they wake up from hibernation, so they need to make money fast, the desperation tooru had for the rokakaka plant is the same type of desperation a baby turtle feels making its way to water avoiding seagulls and other predators just to be able to make it to live, to make money in the short period of time they have awake, is the same fight to live, for them who started from insects, a 1 dollar note means more to them than anyone in the world, they need it to survive, the fight for the rokakaka is their fight for a sustainable future, other rock humans like urban geurilla wanted to take over the human population, while tooru wanted the sustainability of the wealth he gains from it, its a fight between jousukes, higashikata and the rock humans sustainable future, its not as grand as saving the world or anything, but its more personal than any other jojo villian imo, and any other motivation for any other jojo part, thats what makes part 8 so special, we just cant understand toorus motivations from our perspective at the top of the food chain

My boy Tooru getting some love, hell yeah. I think Tooru is really similar in a lot of ways to Diavolo and thats probably why I like him so much because I also really like Diavolo. Both are the mysterious leader of a crime organization pretty fixated on keeping their identity secret, both wield an almost undefeatable Stand reflecting their ideals, their idea of being at the top of the world and only caring about the power they can seize working from the shadows and overall both are very mysteroius and imposing.
Also, his introduction is actually pretty well crafted, I feel it achieved what the introduction of Doppio didn't do, but it could've.
With Doppio, we saw him as his guy he is a part of the organization and has a special connection with the Boss. However it was very quickly established, through the fortune teller on Sardinia that Doppio IS the Boss (sort of, as they share a body).
With Tooru however, the mystery was much more drawn out. We got to know him in a pretty random moment, we started establishing facts about the head doctor, and it was then that we learned that Tooru has a special connection with him, so I already started to suspect something between the two. And indeed, later we learn that Tooru is the head doctor himself, but the whole buildup and the mystery of their identity is paced in a way that the fact Tooru is the head doctor uncovers slowly, when with Doppio it was just handed to the reader the moment he got introduced.
Josuke-Tooru relationship is pretty similar to Giorno-Diavolo relationship in other ways as well, as they don't really share that much of a personal connection, more of a thematic and moral differences in the narrative, but no real personal interactions. I think I like Josuke-Tooru better because Josuke has spent more time actually fighting against him and it sorta developed into this rivarly. I mean, he was mostly fighting the sentient stand, not Tooru himself but it is something. I overall like the narrative pararells a bit more in JoJolion between the two than in Part 5. Giorno and Diavolo didn't have a single encounter until the very end, as well as Giorno's vendetta was more against the concept of Diavolo (evil mafia boss) than against the character himself. But it might also be personal bias, as I really dislike Giorno.
However in general, I don't really like viewing Tooru as the sole main antagonist of JoJolion. Part 8 is very different from the other parts and one of biggest changes compared to any other part, is that JoJolion has not just two sides od the conflift, but three. In SBR we had Diego who acted sorta like a wild card as well as in Golden Wind there's Risotto, but in JoJolion it's much more in depth. We have three main characters wanting the new Locacaca: Josuke, Jobin and Tooru. All three parties share different views, different ideas and all are antagonistic towards the other. It's worthing thinking about the fact that Jobin was also an antagonist to both Josuke and Tooru and I think that's what makes the story so interesting. That's why we had a three way fight in the finale: Yasuho vs Jobin, Tooru vs Jobin and Josuke vs Tooru.

Huh, I guess I also have been looking at Tooru in the wrong light. With your text examples and explanation, it kind of makes me realize just how deep Tooru's character was written throughout the end of Jojolion, despite having said text be written at different parts in the manga. I kind of wish that there was a bit more context to these quotes and actions of Tooru beforehand (like how Kira was introduced) than just having him be revealed later. I get it makes understanding the story a lot more comprehensible going through a second time, but it seems more so that the context to such scenes is lacking when people are reading it for the first time with monthly chapters. I can really appreciate Araki's attention to detail in this case, though I kind of feel some readers might be put off by just how complex Tooru is as a character and what he represents in terms of the overall story to Jojolion. Though despite this, I still top off my hat to Araki for creating such a unique and oddly relatable character. For (currently) being 61, Araki has still got it.

Toru is the fundamental antithesis of Josuke. Toru is obsessed with this innate need to have material wealth and power that was ingrained into him genetically as a rock human. He also has an obsession with the past, the things he’s experienced and the dreams he’s had. Josuke doesn’t have a past, and because of that he can’t worry about any future because he doesn’t know what path he’s on. The only thing Josuke knows is the present where he needs to save Holly. He doesn’t care about money, power, or anything. All he wants to do is save one woman’s life. I also think saying Jobin is stuck in the past is a bit weird considering that he’s constantly worried about the future of the Higashikata fruit parlor, what it will take to save, sacrificing his entire present (his dad) to save his son (who is a representative figure of the future) and the business

    • @it6647
      @it6647 Рік тому +1

I don't think Rock humans have an engrained motivation towards wealth and power
      Blue Hawaii didn't for eg
They are also described as parasites that take up jobs where they could be absent for a long time
Rather, the motivation isn't really money or power
      But power dynamics
As the quintessential "plan B", they(through Urban Guerrilla) see the flaws in plan A
They see the human desire to persist, unlike a rock which is perennial and sturdy
They see human desires as the pitfall
It's the humans that impeded on their territory, cut down trees
Rock humans are parasites but humans are pests, like locusts
By taking advantage of the human nature, they want humans to be "dependent" on them
This isn't simple money or power (though that's important too)
It's about power dynamics and its shift
And also about Toru's legacy in all this
He has worked with a conviction for a long long time towards this
Because as a rock human, he believes that once one dies, all one leaves behind are dreams and memories

  • @BlueGuyTube
    @BlueGuyTube Рік тому +3

I reread Jojolion in preparation for Jojolands and i do think Tooru, while not the greatest Jojo villain, becomes a better antagonist on a second read. Wonder of U was always a terryfying stand and that hasen't changed, but i do think that the Flow of Calamity is the perfect idea for the antagnoist since the concept of "Flow" was introduced by Norisuke in the first half of the story. Tooru himself, while not particularly complex or deep as a character, still has understandable motivations. Yes, money and fame aren't exactly incredible motivations for the main villain, but him wanting to help the rock humans become the superior species after hiding from the humans for centuries does give him a bit of sympathy. There is also the fact that Tooru shined the bringhtest in his very last chapter, with his final monologues and scenes being very well written and interesting. The problem is that he comes just after Funny Valentine, arguably the best main villain of Jojo, and is even overshadowed by Jobin, who has a lot more time to shine compared to him and is a more complex character than him.
But i do think the anime can really improve this by simply teasing him a couple of times. He had the same problem as manga Kira for me, where he kinda appears with little build up after a certain point without too much leading up to him. The anime fixed this part of Kira by simply having small scenes of severed hands in a mysterious house, and having him in the background of some scenes. So when he first appears in the anime, it's like an "oh shit, this is the dude" moment. But even with that, Kira still had half of Part 4 to shine as a character, while Tooru only has the climax of Jojolion. I think the anime can do something similar with Tooru, nothing major, just maybe dropping the word "calamity" a couple of times in the first half and maybe even have a glimps of the Head Doctor/Tooru when they first go to meet Holly at the hospital.

    • @it6647
      @it6647 Рік тому +1

They need to do this carefully though
They cannot and should not show him inside the hospital itself as that would create problems with plot
Toru shouldn't be aware of Josuke's existence until much later, after Damo has died perhaps
If that doesn't happen then the plot of JoJoLion will fall apart
I think the best way to address the core issues is to add something more substantial:
Have Toru and Yasuho talk while it's raining and then hint towards WoU's involvement in past events, particularly with Rai, a bit more
See the thing is, the main problem with reading JoJolion first time around is that the smaller details get ignored
As such, making these more apparent would fix that issue for the first time viewer
So this additional section going over more of their past actions as well as making their motivations more clear(because they're kinda hazy until you reread) would help
      We don't need more hints
We don't need more screen time
Just a few scenes with him talking to Yasuho while Josuke is recuperating with rain bullet syndrome

Wonder Of You is my second favorite stand and my second favorite villain. I loved the mystery of "how are you going to defeat this guy without pursuing him?" in the last chapters because you can see the terror the main characters experienced because of it. It was similar to DIO’s and diavolo’s fights but (in my opinion) way scarier because of Wonder Of You’s ability that depended on a character’s pursuit. The attacks were always unexpected because of it, the character’s could predict in what way DIO or Diavolo, (they’ll skip or stop time to hit them with a lethal blow) but Wonder Of You has the character’s dig their own graves the whole time they think about fighting him. I think Tooru was a stronger boss than Diavolo in a way that he knew he was invincible even if he revealed himself, so he has this confidence through out the whole thing that makes him really cool. It’s a passive aggressive antagonist that didn’t fear the main character like every other antagonist did. It felt unique

Tooru is a fantastic villain, but the problem I find is that the story itself has a major focus on family and Jobin, an antagonist working towards his family, just dies unceremoniously to Wonder of U. We literally could not accept he died FOR MONTHS because of how unlikely it would seem to have him drop off without a direct confrontation with Josuke. So having Tooru as the main villain just feels wrong, even if he fits into literally every other theme (memories and dreams, flow, curses, the vague line between being one thing or the other) Jojolion has.

Tooru fits wonderfully as the villain imo, his motif is that of the insurmountable force that the other characters are all struggling against. Wonder of U representing the stagnant nature of the universe, and the stand punishes those who attempt to change fate with a calamity of sorts. Jobin was, in the perspective of the story, just a father attempting to save his child. His attack on the Wonder of U and his subsequent death showcased the insurmountable nature of Wonder of U’s presence, and Jobin’s stubbornness to let up on his goals.
The divide between Josuke and Jobin, however, is in acceptance of the Wonder of U’s nature. Whereas Jobin consistently and aggressively fought against the stand and its calamities, Josuke accepted the premise of the stand, and let up on his initial goal of finding out all of his mysteries, opting to rather live his life as Josuke. This imo is the premise for his Go Beyond ability since it accepted, then promptly ignored, the logic of the universe that WOU represented. Josuke’s sense of identity and Tooru’s constant need for an actual identity are the key conflicting aspects of the story, except that the various facets of this are explored through various antagonists throughout the story; showing the difference in circumstance and vices that ultimately led people to seek out an object that changed fate (beit Jobin, the rock humans, or otherwise).
Tooru representing the stagnant nature of the universe and the fact that fate itself cannot be altered, and Josuke’s acceptance of the absurdity within attempting to find his sake of identity, are the two contrasting themes in the story. The entire story is a 'pursuit' of sorts between the characters’ varied goals, and Tooru’s inclusion in the story is a thematic triumph in my honest opinion.
Tooru as a villain is much more manipulative and patient than other villains in JoJo, not showing themselves in some grand display or having some insane grandiose vision of the world, just rather an inhuman being seeking to be human. His presence during the Joseph Joestar portion of the story, aswell as his first encounters with Yasuho, showed that he is an essentially empty person. Sure, Jobin or otherwise is a good antagonist, but Tooru from his place in the story, his character mannerisms, and even his dialogue is superb (also note that he mainly spoke through his stand).
He didn’t throw cool beetle fights or anything, but he was for sure fantastic. Unlike any other we’ve had so far

@@frostyfrenchtoast I interpret Tooru as someone who didn't took the "right path" rather he took no path in life, he wasn't commited to Yasuho nor the Rock Humans(I mean he killed Poor Tom and indirectly killed Dr Wu by telling Josuke where Yasuho is) he's just a passive observer which is a complete contrast to both Jobin and Josuke, Jobin being 101% into his "right path" while Josuke after confronting Holly has finally decided his "right path" which is why both Jobin (through Kaato) and Josuke were the main players in Tooru's defeat

One thing that should be noted about Tooru is that Araki has since introduction implied that Rock humans were since beginning or turned into parasites. They start their life as parasitoids for wasp untill they reach maturity, and after it they find a person whose life they can steal and leech as long as possible. Rock humans were always depicted acting in their self interest with no concern for others ( aside A. Phex brothers between each other ), and even in their love life were simply caring for their own satisfaction and showing minimal concern for their partners ( Dolomite treating her disabled girlfriend more like a very loved pet than his equal ). Being around Rock humans also brought misery to most they were around, even with Rokaka having horrifying side effects sometimes worst than the disease. Tooru as a main villain is the ultimate form of this parasitism, a person with no strong drive that still claws away everything from other with giving only the bare minimum if even that. His stand literally brings nothing but misfortune reflecting what Tooru does. This was exemplified in the scene where Tooru sees a wasp nest that stirs memories from his youth and proceed to eat them, wasp symbolizing nurture and he thanks them with death. The relationship with Yasuho was also based on exploitation since beginning even when he cared about her genuinely, he was still using her for mostly emotional satisfaction. In the end he did what parasite does best and tried to take even more, but doing so ended up giving someone else everything he had. I think this was what Araki was going for, but feel free to think and talk about it

Just finished reading Jojolion. And yes, Tooru isn't the most impactful villain in the series (Most of them are either more interesting or more complex than him) but it doesn't have to be. Part 8 is basically a chorus of all character where everyone plays a role with their own arc and the fact that we don't have a focus on Tooru is compensated by rock humans as a whole and how they are and integral part of a story and share common goals even if they're following them for their own sake. I'd honestly say that the villain here is the organization of rock humans rather than this paricular one who stood up due to the power of its stand and its ambition.
That's why i think part 8 is so different from all the others (and it's a good thing), the focus isn't the final battle where everything is supposed to be wrapped up, on the other hand the final battle is a consequence of all the parallel development arcs (Jobin's ambition, Yasuho's growth, Josuke's mission to save Holly and Tsurugi's ilness). The writing is superb, i just came out from reading it but so far it's S tier

A late post, but I think there is further meaning behind the choosing of The Elvis Presley song ‘The Wonder Of You.’ The song itself, as of my interpretation, is fairly deepened within it’s meaning. Stemming from relationships, the lyrics state ‘I guess I’ll never know the reason why you love me as you do.’ Before stating how that is ‘the wonder of you.’ What this, in all forms of essence, boils down to is a form of self reflection. In the end, we cannot observe ourselves as others are able, we are unaware to the state of our qualities and flaws to their full extent. Thus, it’s a question as of ‘what is right about me that has made this woman fall in love with me?’ Which, in the end, is the wonder of another. The factor that you shall never truly know, it’s a mystery in the end, that you have no form of control over. Which, while it may reflect on Tooru’s relationship, perhaps being self aware as to how of a selfish and manipulative person he is. I believe that it has connections between him and his stand. Tooru is very aware as to just how powerful his stand is, and of how it has gotten him to where he is in life. But such power will have it’s toll on a man. Thus, I believe that the song is Tooru wondering why he is essentially ‘the chosen one.’ He is the rock human that has surpassed many of his kind, he is the rock atop the rest. But he will never know why he was given the stand that brought him to this state. Thus, I believe that ‘Wonder Of U’ is named after Tooru’s reaction to the stand. He will never be aware as to why he was given this fate, it’s simply a wonder.

in my opinion the rock humans feel somewhat analogous to the pillar men from part 2; in that they're some manner of convergent evolution from humans, and also from a narrative standpoint. it's not just tooru present in the story - he only lets his power really shine at the very end of jojolion. you could make a comparison to kars, here, in that several other members of his species do a majority of the fighting, and are ultimately killed, before he's forced to face the protagonists of the part head-on, revealing power that far outshines his counterparts. pair that with a subtle disdain for humanity, and a chase for an item of extreme power that he believes he is entitled to, and the similarities just grow.
even so, they're not one to one! part 2 is still very much a story about overcoming evil, while part 8, as it tells you right out of the gate, is primarily a story about breaking a curse. (though it's important to note that themes of generational trauma are present in both parts.)

introduced Tooru as one of Josefumi's and Kira's friends and the head doctor as his faceless adoptive grandfather kind of like diavolo. Tooru could help Josuke and Yasuho in the early arc's only appearing when they're in trouble pretending like he can't see or hear stands. Later on when they begin to suspect the head doctor as the main villain it would be a much better reveal when Tooru turns out to be the stand user and his grandfather, the head doctor, IS HIS STAND. Or something like that would've been a little more interesting since Araki was going for a mystery kind of vibe. Tooru's relationship with Yasuho made no sense to the plot line atleast to me it felt that way. Thats why him being josefumi and Kiras friend would make a little more sense.

but i dont think Araki intended him to be a primary villain, like DIO per se. but i think the medical officials at TG Uni as a team being the antagonistic force was better than a single person, versus a clear villian like Funny Valentine or simply, DIO.
i just wanted him to be around more. although i was clueless to Tooru being a rock human, him showing up around the same time as Akefu was a big giveaway and i wasnt really surprised. i do still really like JoJolion though, as Gappy has become one of my favorite jojos. i resonated with his will to try an save Kira's mother quite a bit
