I have been fishing hellgramites for smallmouth bass for over 55 years. The larva you are using for perch bait are not hellgramites but are larva of some variety of aquatic dragonfly. Hellgramites are the larva of the dobsonfly. The term hellgramite is used exclusively for identifying the larva of the dobsonfly and should never be used in identifying any other variety of aquatic larva. My favorite bait for fishing open water perch are pieces of nightcrawler that Blake was using. My favorite bait for perch through the ice is wax worms. Take care and have a grrrreat day!!!
Teddymac is correct! Those are Dragonfly nymphs in the family Aeshnidae, otherwise known as “Darners.” They are NOT Helgramites, which are Megalopterans - Dobsonflies & Fishflies.
