You know what they say, the show must go on! From a production standpoint, what do you do when the star of your TV show suddenly dies? Do you replace them with a different actor hoping that your audience won't notice or do you make up some kind of excuse that covers their absence and move on? This same scenario has played out over and over throughout the years leaving writing teams and producers scrambling to salvage their series.

Sometimes, shows are able to recover from the loss. Other times, the series has to be scrapped entirely. In this video, we're going to take a look at some of the most famous cases of a TV show losing one of their stars and how they dealt with the problem. Hopefully, we'll also give these actors the respect that they deserve. It's always a tragedy when a talented individual passes away before their prime, but at least everyone featured in this video was able to leave their mark before meeting their end.

Luke Perry and Patrick Swayze going made me cry.
I was a young "lad" when Will Geer passed away when he played grandpa on "The Waltons" & nothing to this day "hit" me as hard as when he passed
Dolph Sweet, who played the father in "Gimme A Break", died a couple of seasons in, and his character died off-screen and was given a tribute on the show.
Real sad I remember the cast reacting to it talk about acting through pain
He dies after the fourth season
I remember how skinny & frail Dolph Sweet looked on the last episode of season 4. It was a lil traumatizing.
@@LadyDuchess He really did look so sick yet he stayed till the end. Doing the show must have been terribly exhausting for him.
Being a Canadian.... John Candy's death shocked me the most at a young age of 43.
Uncle Buck is an all time favorite
Yes but he wasn't on a TV series
He was the best person yes his death was a tragedy and he'll never be forgotten
@@tomedgar4375 me too♥️
@@walterguthrie2684 loved him 👍
Joseph Kearns on "Dennis the Menace", Jim Davis on "Dallas", Wally Cox from "Hollywood Squares", Peter Duel on "Alias Smith and Jones", and John Ritter. In the case of Duel, it was the reason the show couldn't go on.
YES Wally Cox/ There's No Need to Fear, Underdog is Here!
Also John Spencer who died during the production of The West Wing.
And Jerry Orbach who died after only 2 episodes of Law and Order:Trial by Jury. And 12 Seasons of Law and Order.
Both great actors ....
I really liked the episodes of L&O that he is in.And remember, he was in 'Dirty Dancing' too.
yep.... I was looking for the John Spencer mention.
I was just a 9 year-old a kid when Dan Blocker passed. I remember I had a hard time dealing with it...he was my favorite tv character of all time. I loved that show.
I, too, had a hard time dealing with the death of Dan Blocker. My favorite episode of Bonanza to this day remains the one titled "Hoss and the Leprechauns."
@@TheMomMom61 yes he was very good,i liked him,
You forgot the death of Mr Hooper on Sesame Street. There was even a special episode explaining death.
I will always be grateful to Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street for all the lessons and for helping me deal with grief, my mom left when I was three but Mr. Rogers had been talking about divorce at or near that time making me feel like I am not the only one and it was not my fault. Mr. Hooper's death was hard on everyone in the show, I remember seeing and hearing many people on the verge of tears but we were told it was good to cry and to talk about your pain, Sesame Street turned a very sad event into a teachable moment that I am sure Mr. Hooper would have been or was proud of.
Pete Duell’s death shocked me. I loved him in Alias Smith and Jones.
I thought of him also.
I still remember when that happened. He had so much natural charisma and charm, nobody could take his place.
I loved him, glad he is remembered
@@maryjoforrest1011 I loved him as well. My sister had a poster of Pete Duel. He was so handsome so perfect in his looks. Loved his dimples. Just a lively looking actor
What about his brother looked like Pete’s twin
I was sorry that you didn’t include Michael Conrad who starred in Hill Street Blues. What a loss he was :(
We miss him too, Steve
"Hey, be careful out there!"
@@albundy6008 good stuff
Jack Soo on Barney Miller should have been included. His death was tragic and the show had a Jack Soo remembrance episode. It's a classic.
Richard Crenna on Judging Amy also died on the show. Also Lynne Thigpan of The District..
@@mamacindyrogofsky495 unless c
Yes
Yes in deed!
That reaction to WOJO making him some coffee was comedy gold, I laughed so hard when that episode aired. 😂😂😂😂😉😉😉
Jim Davis who played Ewing family patriarch Jock Ewing on Dallas deserves a mention here...
Agree
Even Larry Hagman with the NEW Dallas.
exactly
Yes the course of the show changed with his death.
Patty Duke n Michael Landon n Dan Blocker. Miss them all !
Dick York, even though he left the series before his death due to his illness, it was also never the same with Dick Sargeant.
Night and day. As York made Darrin out to be a crybaby and needless worrier. Sargeant was one to make Darrin more silent rage type who got angry with facial language and voice tones.
Also Darren number two never interacted with his children at all which the first one had with Tabitha.
Dick York had a certain kind of innocence, the way he would smirk his face with a twist and say, "Sam!!!" I loved him too, and he loved the Lord, so we shall see him again in heaven!
Agree. ...it's sad. Loved that show ♥️♥️👍
@@thommysides4616
I remember Dick York in The Twilight Zone...in an episode where he could hear what was in people's minds.
(I grew up about 50 miles from Rockford, where he returned to, to die.)

Patrick Swayze will always one of my favorite actor missed
Mine too i miss him alot
He owned and showed Arabian horses and was known to be a very
nice person and is still missed.
Roadhouse
Was always my favorite actor, it was almost like loosing a family member or friend. RIP
Dan Blocker' death shocked me. You didn't mention Alias Smith And Jones' Pete Duel's death; the show limped through one season after his death.
The show Night Court had two older female bailiffs, Selma, who died after season two, and her replacement Flo who died after season 3. They picked a younger woman to be the next bailiff and she finished out the series run.
So inconvenient, these people dying one after the other. If I were the producer I'd sue them. :)
Marsha warfield
Selma Diamond and Florence Hallop, the both died from cancer.
Marsha Warfield,who played Roz
And the beautiful Markie Post died a few years ago at the young age of 64. She played on Night Court.
Dan Blocker was my favorite actor. He was a gentle giant 😢😢
Ditto😭😭
*Did You Like him BeTTer, than Mary Ann???*
Hoss Cartwright was the heart and soul of Bonanza and his gentle nature endeared him to the world! In the episode( The Rainmaker) where he cares for a little girl with typhoid fever, the girl recovers and asks Hoss if he was an angel. How appropriate. Out of the mouth of babes!
In the Bonanza’s introduction all of the actors smile at the camera but Dan Blocker’s 😊 smile lights up the tv screen. You are looking at this mountain 🏔 of a man with such a kind, gentle, angelic smile.
If this went on about a minute longer it should also be noted that Marion Lorne as the lovable bumbling Aunt Clara also passed on during the production of Bewitched and Alice Ghostly filled in the missing need for a character like it as Esmeralda.
The different neighbor was Sandra Gould. You also failed to mention that Kelsey became a regular cast member at the same time Woody joined the cast.
Aunt Clara was one of my favorite characters on Bewitched.
@@deeo2214me too.
My Mammaw loved Aunt Clara and so did I!
Watched bewitched all the time even lately how many years later
What about Selma Diamond from Night Court, Bull made a big deal over her death. Even her replacement the following season died after the season ended.
She and Florence Halop passed away over the course of the series and should have been mentioned here.
The Night Court curse.
@@tj921able Then Marsha Warfield took over as the bailiff...
Mr Hooper, it was nice to see CTW film an episode about his passing.
I was still active duty when Freddie Prinze died. A lot of us in my unit (9th Cavalry) were so shocked he did that. Such a young man.
Dan Blocker was my favorite Cartwright.
He was one of my favorites on the show too. He was a gentle giant.

I miss John Ritter! His death was a shocker.
I miss him too! We all miss the iconic John Ritter!
Sadly John's death was on the anniversary of 9/11.
@@DarthSideous63 The two-year anniversary of 9/11!
He was so great!!!!!
I watch three's company reruns as daily, uplifting medicine.. Just like Robin Williams, his magical gift to comedy entertainment will live & thrive for eternity..
A Part Two is definitely needed to include Jim Davis, John Ritter, Selma Diamond, Phil Hartman, Florence Halop, Jack Soo and many others.
ABSOLUTELY! How could Facts Verse leave out Davis and Ritter, who were the most significant deaths for me. Davis' John Ross "Jock" Ewing, Sr. provided a lot of the driving force for the original 'Dallas'. Davis died during the series' 4th season and I totally lost interest once his character was eventually killed off-screen during the following season. The show's writers wisely opted neither to recast Davis' role nor to simply ignore Jock's absence, though they did delay the inevitable by having Jock and Ms. Ellie take an extended "trip", as communicated only thru occasional scenes of Ellie talking on the phone from their hotel room. Notwithstanding that 'Dallas' did last for another NINE seasons, it just was never quite the same without Jock. And who can say enough about John Ritter? Arguably one of THE funniest and most CONSISTENTLY working comedic TV actors of his generation, Ritter's sudden and shocking death from a rare congenital heart condition early into the run of the fledgling sitcom '8 Simple Rules' all but doomed that show. Even the addition of the late, great Jim Garner wasn't enough to make up for Ritter's loss, as made apparent by the show's cancellation after just two seasons.
at the beginning of the video they show the image of John Ritter, but don't mention him. Also on that list one could include Carol Susi, who played the voice of Howard's mother, on the Big Bang Theory.
Douglass Watson (Mac Cory on Another World)
Diana Hyland’s death was the most impactful for me. When she passed and the entire Right Is Enough plot had to change to the way the family dealt with her death was memorable and sad.
Yeah she was going with John Travolta at the time, She died right in his arms. So sad.
So many actors and actresses.passed away at a early age.its very sad.i hope they were all saved and are in heaven.
I consider the most significant loss was Freddie Prinze who was so young, and next was Dan Blocker and then Ward Bond, none the less God Bless all of them and all are missed.
Karl Swenson of Little House On The Prairie passed away too. Douglass Watson of Another World passed away 3 days for Another Worlds 25th anniversary.
Alas Smith and Jones star Pete Duel. Pete was playin' Russian roulette with a six-gun with a blank cartridge in it. Thinking that with a blank it wouldn't kill him. But he didn't count on the pure concussion and the blank wad that hit his temple with the force that took him out. He was replaced by Roger Davis who was the fellow that did the opening title's voice-over each week.
A real sad death is Rebecca Schaeffer of My Sister Sam. She was murdered by a stalker.
Yup Robert John Bardo, So sad and so tragic. Never should've happened.
That one really turned my stomach. May he rot in jail forever.
That one upset me deeply.I fell into a deep depression over her death. I will never recover from that one . Pete Dual and Phil Hartman also affected me deeply.
That was so tragic.😢
She wasn’t killed when the show was on
A mention goes to Joseph Kearns who played Mr. Wilson in the Dennis ths Menace tv show in the early '60's.
yep je
Arthur Brough played Mr Grainger on, "Are You Bring Served". Arthur Brough died on 28 May 1978, while the sixth series was in pre-production. He was being written into the scripts at this time. I was shocked most by Patrick Swayze and Heath Ledger. I still can't watch any of their movies.
Whatever happened to Trevor bannister who played Mr. Lucas?

Nicholas Colosanto's death depressed me, my favorite episode of Cheers was the one where his daughter was going to marry a scumbag and the coach talked her out of it. It's one of my favorite TV episodes of all time.
I wish the writers and producers had done a tribute episode for Nick. It upset me that they barely acknowledged his passing. Coach was the funniest character on the show and Nick Colosanto did an amazing job bringing Coach to life!
@@e.b.1728 I don't know if they did something behind the scene, because in the show they only mentioned it a couple of times, and Woody was a nice "replacement" for him; but I think the producers of New Girl paid some sort of homage to him because Coach's nickname is Coach and later it's revealed his first name is Ernie.. just like Coach from Cheers... I don't know if they did that on purpose or not, but I still found it cool, as I love both shows and characters :D
Zara Cully who played Mother Jefferson. She was well into her 80s when the Jeffersons debuted. She was hilarious.
Thank you for taking the time to speak about these actor who all passed away.god bless them all.
Thanks for watching! We're so glad you enjoyed this video. What other types of videos would you like to see?
i miss everyone of them and thank you for this post.
Joseph Kearns (Mr. Wilson) Dennis the Menace 1959, replaced by Gal Gordan.
JOE KEARNS DIED 1962 GALE
Since Cory Monteith was mentioned, I'll go with Lee Thompson Young who sadly committed suicide. He played Det. Barry Frost on "Rizzoli & Isles" at the time of his death. At first Frost's absence was addressed as him still being on vacation but not long after that his death was written as being a fatal car accident while coming home. The episode with the funeral was painful.
That was a very sad death. I loved Rizzoli and Isles.
Lee Thompson Young was a devastating loss to me. So 😥 tragic
The episode was really a tearful one for me.
I don't normally subscribe to these sort of channels but your presentation and the way you organized the content is very good.
Glad you liked it, alfredagain!
RIP to all, Mr Perry's death was shocking to me especially when I'm a stroke and cardiac arrest survivor myself and should be Six feet under too
Sorry hear that. Glad your here♥️♥️👍
Thank God for your recovery!
those are caused by atherosclerosis the result of a genetic defect that causes one to make cholesterol out of carbs. yeah 50% of everybody on the planet sports that DNA defect (fortunately I'm not one of them). yeah your total has probably always been through the roof just about from the day you were born. The actor you mentioned probably never knew this as this defect is probably the number one killer worldwide. Watch your carb intake (even if your A1C is normal).
Robbin Williams to me is still one of the most shocking deaths I can recall
He wasn’t in the middle of production of a series.
I remember that day too. I was on vacation in Windsor, Canada having dinner at a casino- hotel with friends. I happened to look over to the bar area where there was a large flat screen and David Muir was on. Robin Williams picture came on the screen and without being able to hear what was being said, I knew. People sitting at the bar started passing the word. What a lose. One the greatest comedians of. our times.
@@godtrust756 But he also had Lewy Body Dementia which was something that wasn't realized until he died and they did an autopsy on him.
Kind of agreed on that! About Robin Williams! I guess I didn’t watch all the other shows at all or not 100%, etc., so I didn’t really notice or wasn’t really impacted by their deaths and disappearance from the shows!!!
You showed Redd Fox at the beginning, so right away I thought you were going to have a segment on him!? I really loved the show he had, Sanford and Son!!!! Oh, well... and the funny thing is on his show, he would hold his heart and have his other arm up to the sky and he’d be looking up to the sky, and saying, “Elizabeth, I’m coming!!” He was trying to manipulate his son, etc.!
Charles bickford who played the owner of the Shiloh ranch on the Virginian. His replacement John mcintire the same one who replaced ward bond on wagon train.
Charles Bickford was a great actor. He played Jane Wyman's father in the academy award winning film Johnny Belinda. He was great in a TV episode of Fred Astaire's show Million Dollar Hospital. I also loved the show The Virginian.
James Drury was the Virginian, but his character remained nameless. Clu Gulager might be the only actor still alive from The Virginian.
Well done! A few were surprises to me. A lot of talent has been lost here.
Freddy Prinze's death was the most shocking. I was 15 and remember thinking that he was so close in age to me.
HOOAH! Yeah I was twenty at the time.
I was 16
Yeah i was 16 years old when he took his own life, So sad loved that show.
The saddest thing is that he died six months after his son, Freddie Prinze jr, was born.
@@dhenderson1810 I didn't know - or didn't remember - that! 🙁
But wait! Where is John Ritter in there. That was the most shocking. I really loved him. He was such an amazing funny person.
Yes John Ritter was a tragic loss.
I rewatch '8 Simple Rules' and really love it, but I turn it off
after his last episode. It wasn't a bad show after that, but it wasn't the same.
How could you not mention the death of John Spencer? He played Leo McGarry on "The West Wing". He was a major character and his death affected everyone in the cast.
This is very sad, but I remember these wonderful actors. Thank you , for sharing.
Jon Erik Hexum's death was shocking to hear about. So young and so talented.
I met Hexum's costar, Jennifer O'Neal (Cover-Up) in 1999, but still didn't want to bring up that subject!
Playing Russian roulette is what killed him. Hollywood actors think they are invincible like heath ledger and Elvis Presley
Glenn Quinn died three years after leaving "Angel" while the series was still in production. He was given tribute on that show and in the Roseanne/The Conners reboot (where he played Mark Healey in the original series).
What about the two selmas on night court? When it came time to replace the 2nd Selma, they went with a much younger actress to avoid the threepeat.
Selma Diamond and Florence Halop, remember both of them well. Marsha Warfield was the "youngster" who is still around today.
The second one wasn't called Selma but Florence.
Marsha Warfield is now a regular on the show 9-1-1 where she plays Henrietta's Mom. I swear they look so alike I thought at first they really were mother and daughter! Excellent, excellent show.
As a child of the 70's, I remember that Will Geer of the Waltons' passing did not go unrecognized on the show. Indeed, his character "died" and the others paid tribute to him in the show.
That tribute episode is so touching.
@@tj921able unfortunately I didn't see it.
@@janeyd5280 There are some cable channels and METV shows The Waltons. Try to catch it. The episode's title is The Empty Nest. It's actually a 2 parter. I have it on DVD.
Yes, that was very well done.
My own grandfather died about 3 years before the Waltons began,so I kind of adopted him as a grandfather figure. When he passed I barely watched the show again while it was still in production
A few ones I never knew about until your video, but I was expecting to see you include John Spencer of West Wing.
Also, on Make Room for Daddy/The Danny Thomas Show I always felt that actress Amanda Randolph at the very least deserved a nomination if not an Emmy for being the comic glue that carried the show over between Jean Hagen's departure and Marjorie Lord's addition to the cast in subsequent seasons! Louise the housekeeper really held her own up against Thomas every time she appeared!!
R.I.P to those who passed .🙏

His son was just a baby when he committed suicide.
One of the most tragic of all the people who died while on a TV show was Phil Hartman. He was busy on _NewsRadio_ and had several recurring roles on _The Simpsons_ when he was murdered by his wife, who then turned the gun on herself -- a rare murder-suicide committed by a woman. Their kids must still be in therapy.
That was the real reason, while he was starring in NBC sitcom Newsradio, which on the program itself, they said the character had a fatal heart attack to explain why he was no longer there
Yes, my family liked Phil Hartman too.He was really funny. But his real life was troubled and ultimately so tragic. We miss him.
@@williamkay6916 most tv shows won't just go out and use the actor's cause of death as the character's cause of death. There are several reasons for that.
@@johnclaybaugh9536 ...Absolutely.... because of the way that whole thing transpired. .... Tragic. I could not ever really grasp why she felt it necessary to go to that extreme,.... one can only speculate.
She was on Zoloft, a drug known to cause psychic breaks and violent behavior … such a wonderful combination. The kids kwent to their grandparents and have to be in their thirties. The family sued the pharmaceutical company and won. That says a lot right there. They are buried together at the families wishes. That says a lot, too.
Rest in peace to all the stars who have passed away . Thank you very much and I really enjoy your videos !

John Fitters death was devastating to me! I was so happy he was on atv show again I grew up watching Threes Company. He reminded me of my Tio Chris, who died young and it felt like I lost a family member. RIP and thank you for the laughter John Ritter.❤️
Pete Duel from Alias Smith and Jones. A very popular series which never recovered from his suicide and limped though for one more series but couldn't recover from the loss of one of the two stars.. I was only 10 at the time but I used to love it. Cowboys and humour.
If I remember correctly it was not a suicide. He was fooling around with one of the guns that fired blanks and pt the barrel to his head and pulled the trigger, but it had a blank round in it and it fired, fracturing his skull sending a bone fragment into his brain causing brain death.
@@drakeilt5776 Ah right. My mistake.
@@drakeilt5776. You’ve just described Jon Erik Hexum’s accidental death.
Pete Duel’s suicide was intentional.

In the UK there was a very popular Glasgow based gritty police detective drama series that began in 1983 entitled 'Taggart'. Taggart was in fact a tough Glaswegian Detective Chief Inspector named Jim Taggart, and was played by actor Mark McManus who sadly died in 1994.
The series however continued until 2010 by making existing supporting characters more prominent and bringing in new ones over the years aswell. The series kept the name 'Taggart' though right through its long run in tribute to Mark McManus the actor that portrayed him so well.
Marion Lorne (Aunt Clara) on Bewitched.
Barbara Colby (Julie Erskine) on Phyllis.
Pete Duel (Hannibal Hayes) on Alias Smith & Jones.
Selma Diamond (Selma Hacker) and Flo Halop (Flo Kleiner) on Night Court.
And of course Larry Hagman (JR Ewing) on the "Dallas" reboot.
Jim Davis (Jock Ewing) on the original "Dallas".
Larry Keating on "Mr. Ed"
Why put a picture of Ted Danson on the advertisement, that’s totally misleading
Yes you idiot
@@janneal9156 My guess is that they did it to highlight the fact that the man who died was from the show Cheers. People know Ted Danson much more so than Nicholas Colasanto. I agree with both of you that it was misleading to show Danson since he is in fact alive and well. That kind of stuff is par for the course on You Tube, where the content of the video often does not match with the preview photo. They mentioned nine actors in the video but curiously left out John Ritter (Eight Simple Rules), Jack Soo (Barney Miller) and Phil Hartman (News Radio). Barney Miller did a whole tribute episode to Soo, which is fairly unusual when you consider how many shows simply write a character out or explain the character's "death" in a future episode instead of actual human being who played the character!
Ted Danson was the reason I ClIcked. Cheers was my number one comedy show. He’s alive and well at 73.
I've been clickbaited
My thoughts exactly....why? Why?

The case of Florence Halop and Selma Diamond from "Night Court" always sticks out in my mind. Selma passed of lung cancer in Summer 1985. Then, Florence Halop replaced her and would pass away of lung cancer just one year later. Also, at that time, I remember how Dolph Sweet's passing on "Gimme A Break" was quite a blow.
I would have like to have seen Lynn Thigpen remembered. She was the mean lady in the movie “Lean on me” and I believe the Carmen Sandeigo kids show as well. But in 2003, while filming the tv show “The District,” she passed and they did a tribute show after pausing production for a month
You didn’t have the guy from Rizzoli & Isles or the dad from Gimme a break, you showed but didn’t mention Jon Ritter

Here's another one for you. Phil Hartman in News Radio. The addition of Jon Lovitz as a replacement in the last season is what ruined that show.
Dan Blocker shocked me the most. I cried and cried when he passed away. There will never be another Dan Blocker.
Dan Blocker was a real shocker when I was young. Loved Bonanza it was one of my favorite shows. Peter Duel, John Ritter, and everyone else RIP.
The producers of Alias Smith and Jones made a big mistake in recasting the role of Smith to Roger Davis. Not that Davis was a bad actor; some lead roles simply can not be replaced. Peter Duel in his was one of them.
John Ritter was the one whose death shock me the most. I miss his comedic series .
He was great in " The Waltons" 🦋🦋😀
bea benederet was the one I missed the most, I loved petticoat junction-during the episode that Betty Jo had her baby, you can tell that the back of "Kate" was not the same person-
IT WAS BEAS DOUBLE HOWEVER BEAS VOICE WAS USED
You should do a show on actors who just disappeared! On Happy Days there was an older brother who went upstairs to get Christmas Decorations (I think) and just never came back down! I'm sure there must be some interesting stories there!
I agree!
Freddie Prinze was the hardest for me to get over because I was a teenager & had a celebrity crush. I cried with my friends for days.
Diana Hyland on "Eight is Enough"
This was the saddest, I believe she only did the first 3 shows and died in March of 1977 replaced by Betty Buckley.
@@garyvandecar2580 Six episodes of the First Season.
@@pbamse Wow thanks, Didn't even remember it being that many.
@@pbamse I just know she was going with John Travolta at that time, They met when he played in The Boy In The Plastic Bubble. She died in his arms so sad.
@@pbamse Actually her Wikapedia page said only 4 episodes.
Has to be John Ritter's death shocked me to the most
Has to be Michael Jackson
@@rascal211 that had to happen. He was out if control
