    In June 2008 my partner & I watched this movie. In July we gave away all of our possessions, resigned from our jobs, and hit the road with a tent and and the faith that we would find much more to experience. We traveled 17,000 miles in a Beetle, lived in Virginia, Wyoming, & Arizona. We camped everywhere in between. We survived it with a new found respect for this complicated but wonderful world we live in. We just came back to the apartment where it all began. Life is a beautiful journey. Never lose site of the beauty within and that which surrounds us on all sides. Most profound soundtrack that still impacts me in a very specific way to this very day. Love, Peace, and Wisdom. You don't always have to make the perfect choice sometimes it helps to choose a path and be willing to bend as the path wonders. Eyes wide open and soul more open than eyes.

    I really don't care how the story ends. In the end, everyone dies anyway! But man, it's not about the destination... It's about the journey.

    As a young 24-year-old now, besides having great respect for Christopher John McCandless, as a concrete example of the philosophical understanding that very few people can realize in their lives, the desire to discover the superior reality that lies deep in the human soul and to achieve this kind of life, I would like to thank him for making us feel the happiness of this kind of life as a result of his journey and struggle. Rest in peace Alex Supertramp...

    Anyone else have the inner call to break the chains of society and live life like how it's supposed to? In the woods, no law, no money, absolutely freedom. If so, prepare yourself with lots of knowledge and surviving techniques or you won't come far, that's a promise and you would end up like Chris. Prepare for being there and the road to there.

    Have no fear
    For when I'm alone
    I'll be better off
    Than I was before
    I've got this light
    I'll be around to grow
    Who I was before
    I cannot recall
    Long nights allow
    Me to feel I'm falling
    I am falling
    The lights go out
    Let me feel I'm falling
    I am falling
    safely to the ground
    I'll take this soul
    That's inside me now
    Like a brand new friend
    I'll forever know
    I've got this life
    And the will to show
    I will always be
    Better than before

    I was in India a few years ago and read the book and it was such an inspiration! People can speculate on who he was and what his motives were, but he chose his own path and lived his life the way that he wanted and for me, that is what it is about! You can sit in your mortgaged house, with your credit card debt, working the job that you hate, judging him, but at least he had the balls to have a go at living out of the mainstream. Yes, he paid the ultimate price, but that was his choice!

    For many of us, modern society does not meet our basic psychological needs as humans. Without a connection with the natural world, and often coupled with the lack of a "tribe" to which a person can feel connected and loved, many fall victim to psychological maladies. For me, what helps me cope with my presence in modern society is to take time to get away from it for "recovery" so to speak. It helps to see what beauty there still is in the world. Otherwise, we may see only the grey of our cities and the apathy and narcisism of those around us, who are also largely products of a similar disconnect with "tribe" and nature.

      Dom Chambers
      He died of starvation, not food poisoning. They just did that for the movie.
      No toxins were found in any of his food, and the berry they mentioned in the film is not toxic. However a later article mentioned ODAP potentially compounding the malnourishment and starvation he was already experiencing, which could have helped kill him faster.
      For a smart person, he showed a distinct lack of common sense. You can't just expect to walk out into the wilderness, burning the amount of calories he was, and not at least know what you're doing. He was ill prepared and didn't really know how to survive out there all by his lonesome. His ideology was sound, but his execution wasn't well thought out.

To live free of society actually takes more time, more effort than living in it. You are not free, effort is labor or you shall perish like he did.

And i remember having this feeling of dread of ergency that if i didnt go that id never be free and o will die inside. I left u.k ended up usa wilderness. I went from crazy society to living in isolation in the woods, and i cried lots..i spoke out to the stars lots and the eagles...and the tears melted away all the crap and then it became clear to me..that i was on the right path . For me, its not about what i have in my hands, this journey for me is about what my heart feels. I am poor and i have endured ...but i have felt..i can feel....the greatest gift of all :) i feel alive.

      Rhiannon Machtan that's a really beautiful story and what an amazing adventure ! You certainly have some really interesting stories to pass on. And you're right it's about the journey that takes us there. I think we should all learn something from Chris, I myself am moving to China next month alone not hitchhiking like you or Chris. But I will someday .
      "The joy from like comes from our encounters and new experiences and hence why there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon and for each day to have a different sun " - Chris.
      Chris lived more in 2 years than most people live in their entire lives. A scary thought for me is to have done nothing with my life and to stay in the same town forever working a 9-5 job not having explored this amazing planet. Anyhow, Stay safe on your travels.

    I wouldn't say he is a hero.. Cause he is not. What he is, is an inspiration to other people. What he did, many can't do. You're right, he was free. But he was also alone. Only in the end did he realise the most important thing: "Happiness is only real when shared". He teached everyone a very important lesson tough, and I admire his aproach on the world.

You don' t have to make the right choice all the time, but you need to be sure of your own ideas by the time you choose. Free thinking, man... that's the only and ultimate freedom we need.

      The idealism never went wrong it was an unfortunate accident which happened to him, which could happen to anyone. The most important thing which the story signifies is the fact that one must always take a journey of self realization, as we are surrounded by people we are constantly distracted sometimes so much that we never really speak to our self and understand that person inside us. I believe he finally understood what it meant and hence those lines he wrote

    @Julia.dreaming- every day you travel ALONE. the adventure is that you KNOW this instead of thinking you are safe and isolated from reality- that is the lie we tell ourselves in the notion that we arent living. Chris McCandless never lived to understand this. Enjoy the sounds of life, the bitterness, the wonder- from a childs laugh to a homeless mans eyes searching, even your own pain- it is an experience that is unique. One day your life and mine will end, and the experience will pass...

      Always love...
      Well... not that easy actually! :)

    • @ikobom
      @ikobom 7 років тому +2

      +m4d3y3m00dy i'm not the holder of the truth, but not every path is ok, that's what people want you to think, to live life your own way to the fullest, that's a good philosofy but not necessarily the right path, actually i don't wanna sound religious but everyone has a purpose and it's your choice to walk by it, either way, i can't tell you what's right or wrong, you wouldn't believe me and you shouldn't since i'm just a man, if you really wanna find about the truth u should ask God, the real and almighty one! maybe read a bit about him in the bible if you believe in it. I totally agree about loving others no matter what though, have a good day sir.

    • @m4d3y3m00dy
      @m4d3y3m00dy 7 років тому +1

      Maybe I was not clear... every path is ok as every path makes you grow up spiritually... every path changes your consciousness... also if you're an atheist... whatever you do in your life... and you get nearer and nearer to the Divine inside... life after life... that's the trick... :)
      Nothing to believe in... just something to experience... when you'll begin to see the light inside and you'll realize your Divine essence... you'll get it! Not before... :)
      Of course I completely agree about the fact everybody has to live life his/her own way to the fullest... :)
      Namasté
      P.S. yes... sanskrit is a part of the truth... my own experience :)

    • @weedtastic
      @weedtastic 7 років тому

      The right path is the one that the individual walking it perceives is the right path. It is not for another to pass judgement for what seems wrong to you, may not be wrong for the one travelling their path. No one has a "purpose' as that suggests that everything is preordained and there is no Free Will. You can ask whatever God you worship all you wish but I would question your sanity if you think you are getting an answer. I think it's funny that you only cite the Bible as an example of where to find truth. Your mind is still too programmed and closed to accept the message in Christopher MCcandless' story.

    • @ikobom
      @ikobom 7 років тому

      Joel Flanders that's why I told you to ask God the one and above all yourself, you could even find a few answers among the science, but I can't convince you, you can tell yourself all day long that every path leads to God my friend, and I won't judge you for that, but that won't make it anywhere near the truth, we will all find out for sure when we die, I don't mind you "questioning my sanity" and I'm also not afraid of death, because I know where I'm going. The way is narrow and hard to cross, unfortunately I don't expect many people to do it... have a wonderful day :)

    Yeah sure he could have donated it, but that's not the point. It was symbolism on his part and us "young people" do not "worship" Supertramp, we look to him because he exemplified how one lives life in respect to themselves and the nature around us rather than becoming corporate drones enduring unhappy circumstances just to keep our heads above water. He stands as an ultimate sign of human freedom and liberation from the struggles of everyday life structured and unnecessarily complicated by fellow men. He dared to break the ties that many cannot and he is an inspiration to many including "young people" because most " young people" are still looking for a way out before it's too late, man.
