This is a subscriber requested video. Thank you so much to Jackie Reinstedler 💐 for prompting this video with one of her very interesting questions! Jackie asked me what I thought of these two fragrances, there was a lot to say... I've been trying these perfumes out for a few months now. I still found making this video very difficult though, big respect to people who make comparison videos, this is my first one and I found organising the information in a logical order really hard!
Narciso Rodriguez for Her and Sarah Jessica Parker’s first fragrance Lovely are widely regarded to be dupes of each other.
At the time of writing, Fragrantica scores 1638 thumbs up for similarity and 326 thumbs down for disagreement. Of interest is that Narciso Rodriguez for Her contains musk, which is a note that has huge variation in how it is perceived between different people and is made synthetically using a wide variety of different aroma chemicals. Some people can smell some of these very intensely, others not.* This might explain the widely varying views on these fragrances.
The EDP and EDT of Narciso Rodriguez for Her seem to have quite different notes, so in reality, is it the EDT that is actually the closer fragrance to Lovely? Was the duping intentional? Which do you prefer? Do you entirely disagree? Does the price difference affect your judgement of these two? Please let me know your thoughts. Lovely is my signature scent !! Being a health care worker I have to be careful with scents, so I used Elizabeth Arden's White Tea for years.
Then someone suggested 'Lovely' to me,, so I watched a few reviews and blindbought it. Best decision I ever made !! I get HOARDS of compliments and cheerful feedback ..... it's the Lavender, it's just Gorgeous 😁😎❤

I hear every party of this video. While I found the EDP (and EDT) pretty, something just didn't work for me. And I sincerely WANTED to love both. The bottles are gorgeous. I can imagine they smell amazing on others.
Oh thank goodness Veronica! There are at least two of us! 🤣 Yes I just didn't jam with it. Like you, I kept trying it, over about 4 weeks, wanting to love it but it was a no and I just don't get it... I've spent years wanting to try it and thinking I would love it from descriptions in videos 😳 it's such a shame.
Lovely is my all time favorite. I have Narciso Rodriguez For Her EDT and I do like it. Its the most similar to Lovely or visa versa. I still prefer Lovely, as I adore lavender. Thank you for all the great content Claire!

It is a really versatile and distinctive perfume and actually really good value too. I think if you overspray it might project a bit more too. @@dr.claire.perfume I definitely overspray Lovely and it lasts all day. The Lovely lotion is excellent as well. I have Ariana Grande Cloud and Jo Malone Myrrh and Tonka which are both heavy on lavender.

This was a very good review. Your description of Lovely is spot on. I just picked up Lovely recently and I thought the same about it as you. It smells clean and fresh and soft and calming. Almost like after the rain scent in spring. I don’t get any warm or woody notes, nothing heavy.

I love both of these fragrances. The NR was a signature for a time. But you are totally right . I've never understood the "powdery" descriptions. Yes, it is a tad powdery but to me it is predominantly a rose. A musky, rose.

Oh thank goodness 😂 I am sure I would enjoy for her without the peach... I've clearly got issues with peach... I really wanted to love for her 😭 and I was so confused by the powdery description 🤨 lovely is pretty! I can definitely see why so many people love it and it's survived 17 years on the celebrity fragrance market, which is saying something!
When Lovely first came out it reminded me so much of Victorias Secret Bare Instinct ( they were almost identical) I do feel that NR smells much more elevated.

I held off buying Lovey until early 2023. But I saw it on clearance and grabbed it (that bottle is about the most beautiful). This has become one of my absolute favorites, and I’ll be buying all of the flankers.
Yes! Me too! I bought Lovely in the end and I flew through a whole bottle in about a year. I ended up wearing it to bed a lot. It's enveloping and relaxing. It makes me think of hotel duvets. I prefer the Narciso Rodriguez (EDT). Like you said the NR is deeper, stronger, complex and that fits more my style. I also think I'm more familiar with the NR since I've been wearing it and was my signature scent for years. I gifted Lovely to a friend who enjoys it more than I ever would. This was a great comparison 🙋♀️😘

Hi Claire, I have been purchasing sample sets lately. I am looking for a new fragrance. I hate doing blind buys but as I have mentioned - you describe fragrances so well, I feel like it would not be such a blind buy. I love lavender, a light amber is nice too. I am going to try and look for this. I like an everyday fragrance more than the exciting ones. I have a couple of unique ones but they will last a long time. I often do not get along with scents that are super popular with many, many others. I often wonder why that is. I must be pretty particular. I do not want a lot of musk. I am not sure that I really want anything more than a touch. I think we are all different and fragrance is personal. You are good to be honest. I am opening the door for yo and freeing you to only reach fragrances that "are you". I would always prefer to be unique, that is why I rarely purchase bug name brand clothing items or purses. I do not want to be "en mass" or on trend with everyone else lol.
It's good to be particular with fragrance. You will find one you love and stick with it. It's a good way to be. 👍
Yes girl they're identical! and you know which one reminds me these two too??? Idylle by Guerlain, since Idye has such a poor performance on my skin, i decided keep it for the bottle but the vibe is soo alike!! Great vid.
Oh really, so idylle is like both of these... I didn't find them that similar 😂 I hate non fresh peach combined with patchouli and amber though, so that would probably be why 😂

@@EloisaMontesdeOcaTV they smelt identical from the nozzle and I never get to the drydown of for her because it fades so much, so maybe if I overspray, I might see the similarity! I never tried idylle. I will see if I can find it In a shop to spray, but maybe it is discontinued?
Ahhhhh Lovely is amazing. By suggestion I got the anniversary edition and it is stronger and longer lasting. I have Narciso Edt and I’m not wowed. Like you I thought if I like Lovely then this would be even better. I’ve been in such a musk mood lately. The
Pure Musk is very nice. Noa by Cacharel is my favorite!!!!! If you haven’t tried it I suggest you do!!

I was definitely in some kind of spell with Lovely when I bought Narciso EDP 😂 I have seen the anniversary version of Lovely and didn't realise they were different 🤯 I was looking at lovely sheer, which I think is meant to be pretty different to Lovely, did you try that one? I tried some of the Narciso Rodriguez perfumes for the first time today and I must say I didn’t know what I was missing so I will be purchasing some or all of them as well as all of the all of the mugler perfumes that I’ve tried so far.
I really like Narciso Poudrée, Fleur Musc, Pure Musc, Musc Noir Rose and For Her EDT but I really don't think I've tried everything. I think perhaps some of those are discontinued now. Which ones did you enjoy? 🥰

Don't feel bad. I can't stand the EDP version of NR For Her, I don't know anyone who does like it. On the other hand, the EDT is in my top 5 fragrances for life and I rarely wear EDT's because performance is usually so lacking I don't bother.
The EDT of For Her is my favorite musk I've ever found in any fragrance and I was actually watching this video to inquire as to whether the must in lovely is the same beautiful, sweet, "animalic" skin musk that's in the EDT. (I'm told it is but I wanted your take.)
If you haven't tried the EDT, I really think you'd like it very much, from what I know about your perfumery preferences.
I'm going to cross my fingers and search for a NR for Her EDT video on your channel as soon as I'm done typing this.
I recently read a book 'The Perfect Scent: A Year Inside the Perfume Industry in Paris and New York.' It was extremely interesting to me.
Half of the book was SJP and Coty's processes for creating Lovely and the rest of her fragrance line. The other half was about Hermes creating In Jardin Sur Le Nil which is apparently some "masterpiece" (😳?) and I was very interested in the information regarding musks. I think Musk might be my favorite note but only a certain kind. But why does every layperson just call every different musk "musk" and sometimes they'll say "white musk" for a particularly soapy, laundry musk but I want to be able to go on Fragrantica and see all the different musks. I want to be able to know which fragrances have that sexy, warm, almost ambery or cashmeran scented musk...the warm fluffy kind from the NR for Her EDT....
Can you help a sister out??

I was asked the question which musk is in NR for Her before and here is my answer:
As far as I know, NR for her EDT was a mix of galaxolide and a bit of ambrettolide, but that's from reading not from me being able to pick out particular musks. Although galaxolide when used excessively, is something that I do think is pretty distinctive, e.g. the vintage Trésor. But I know galaxolide is in the process of being banned (or may have been banned now, I'm not sure).
I am not sure which fragrances would have ethylene brassylate, but I know that that musk is used sometimes to mimic galaxolide as LVMH did stop using galaxolide quite early on. Ethylene brassylate is also known as Musk T (Takasago), it's a round soft feminine skin musk. It can smell a little ambery or vanillic, but is usually used in combinations with other musks. It may be that NR for Her EDT has been reformulated to include Ethylene brassylate as a replacement for galaxolide over its 21 year history. Sorry but I'm not a perfumer so I have just read a lot about this! Asking an actual perfumer might yield a more accurate answer.
I think probably searching for recipe lists from people who make fragrance clones using gas chromatography gcms information (they are even people on insta who post formulations and YT content too on how to make things) this may help you to find which fragrances share these musks and to confirm which musks NR for her EDT uses. That's the only way I can think to do it. I think it's hard to tell which musk is which sometimes because in general mixtures are used in fragrances, not just one. I would assume that a perfumer or someone more expert than me might be better able to tell you which fragrances might have what you are looking for. If you are interested, it's here:

i smelled that pink Narciso Rodriguez from my best friend.. and when I smelled it, I immediately thought of Lovely... but I don't know how NR was in the drydown... I agree that Lovely is a very good every day perfume... and the price is a big BONUS ! Before you even talked about the peach and I saw it in the note breakdown, I got a slight uh-oh feeling, coz I remembered when you talked about the peach note....
I agree, because when I smelt them from the nozzle, they smelt identical, so that would be the dry down. I just never got to the stage where the I could adequately smell the perfume on my skin at that stage, it faded 😔 yep it was the peach... Lovely is actually lovely it's cringe but true 😅

I didn't tried lovely neither narciso edt. However I Owen the edp pink bottle for over five years. It is such challenging scent. Every time I wear it I had a headache, may be due to the sharpness of the musk. On my skin it is all about roses and musk.
Normally I reach for it in the summer. I revisited it in this late fall and found it more wearable then it used to be..lovely soft powdery roses smell with prominent musk. But it still not a love for me.

I wish I got more rose! For most of the life of it, I get a lot of peach, it only get rosier after an hour or so. I didn't realise that so many people have such a problem with this one 🤯 I am really shocked! Thank you for watching 😘
the black bottle EDT is much better i thought lovely was a comparator for chan fragrances liked by people who like coco mademoiselle
Ohh I am 100% with you, I don't get on with the Narciso EDP either. I can't really pinpoint why, maybe it IS the peach? But it just smells wrong to me. 🥴 It's been my sister-in-law's signature for years now so unfortunately it's seared into my subconscious. 😬 😂 I haven't smelled Lovely in years, but I remember really enjoying it, curious to give her a sniff again! ❤️
Sometimes scents smell different on other people, I am guessing that's not the case here?
For me, it's the peach with the patchouli and possibly also the amber that makes it a no. That trinity of notes is something I can really struggle with.
Lovely shocked me with, sorry to do this, but it's true, how "lovely" it was. It's not exciting, but it's a good celebrity scent for sure.

When you mentioned that you do not feel right to choose lovely over NR EDP, I relate to this situation when I decided to declutter MFK BR540 (I get guaze smell) and keep Lattafa Ana Abyadh Rouge...these are identical but Lattafa eliminated the clinical smell.
Same! I love ana abiyedh rouge! Someone sent me a sample of it, it's definitely my favourite dupe, but I've not tried BR540, only the extrait which is not for me.
This was excellent, I am embarrassed to say that I have not tried the EDP version of Narciso Rodriguez for her and now I’m super curious and will have to get my hands on it. I do love the EDT in the black bottle though - that’s for sure and I agree with you that Lovely is a really nice one that lives up to its name. Great video Claire!❌⭕️❌⭕️

It felt like for her was a very different perfume to Lovely. I don't think it is guaranteed that you won't enjoy it based on not liking lovely. Depends whether you like peach or not... You like Gucci Rush, so you might really like it 🤔

I had a few years ago NR for her EDP. I smelled it in an airport and i bought it on spot. Bad mistake. I could not tolerate it. I gave it to my MIL. The rose was awfull for me. For years after i did not smell any other NR. But i kept seeing them being shown on UA-cam and hyped up so i bought late last year the EDT and i love it. Completely different perfume. Softer, sweeter, no rose. I love it. I started to like NR. Yesterday i received NR Narciso Poudree and i wore it all day long. It is a love for me. To be honest i do not have the courage to try again For Her EDP. I will stick with the one i love.

I love poudrée and, other than the ambree, I am not tempted by any of the others, but if I get the opportunity to try them, I will! 😊
I have not tried Lovely. I kept adding it and removing it from my online cart. I have to blind buy it because i do not have where to test it. But try NR For her EDT. It is a completely different fragrance. No rose and as far as i know has some osmanthus. For me the rose seems to be a no.

I really want to try the EDT. I think the story might be different for me compared with the EDP. Lovely is a very simple perfume that doesn't really move along or develop much.

I have both of these and sometimes layer them. Narciso For Her EDP is in my top 3 fave perfumes. On me it is a beast, it lasts all day, and I find it recognizable when I smell it on others. I agree that For Her is linear. It pretty much smells the same to me throughout the day.
Layering would be good with these I think. I couldn't get on board with for her EDP and I resold my bottle. I do now have Narciso ambrée as well as poudrée.
I enjoyed this video on the Lovely comparison. I get the same as you with D&G The One. I felt like I was missing out on what others were enjoying as an amazing top 5 scent. Gucci Rush too. The design was so sleek and the notes sounded beautiful and I got something that felt unwearable to me. Now I know what it was!
Maybe we just don't love peach and patchouli or peach and amber or generally non-fresh leach notes? I have quite figured it out yet 😂 I might check the ingredients and see whether I can see anything in common. 🤔
Gucci Rush, I had two bottles of at one point. I found one to be extremely plasticky. The other was sweeter and with more vanilla. I was using the plasticky one because I thought both bottles would smell the same and then one day, I tried the other and I was so shocked! I decluttered the plasticky one and I'm currently trying to decide whether I want to keep the other bottle or not. I have the same exact problem with peach (and apricot) notes! I find them almost nauseating when strong. I also find BR 540 to smell like a dentist's office, while my husband finds it irresistibly sweet and sexy. My son seems to share my nose and my daughter seem to share her dad's. Perfumes also smell very differently on our skins. I find it all very fascinating, as it explains why we have such different tastes when it comes to fragrances!

Hi Claire 👋 i really like Lovely, youre right its a clean fragrance, reminds me of a clean laundry too which i like smelling. Surprising because i dont like lavender. I had a sample of Narcisso Rodriguez for her, and i find them similar, reason i didnt buy it yet as there is a big price difference LoL ill settle for SJP for now
I was really pleasantly surprised by Lovely! I think the lavender there is light and airy, not like soap lavender or lavender oils or aromatherapy, so that might be why you like it when you don't normally like lavender.
Did you try both the EDT and the EDP of for her? I was really confused because I didn't find them similar apart from in the really far drydown. At that point, for her was really faint.

I wear both and love them..NR is a stronger lovely smell but SJP is a lovely similar but poor relation..NR lasts all day and SJP few hours

I'm not a fan of Lovely. I bought Tocca's Cleopatra because I love the hand lotion. The perfume smells like Lovely and not the hand lotion I had. I guess I'll skip this Narciso too😕
Oh that is disappointing. I hate when the lotion and the perfume don't smell similar... I don't think Narciso for her smells like lovely, at least not for the first 2-3 hours...

Well I've tried neither but it is a good comparison. Musks are such an individual thing aren't they. Generally my catnip. And I completely think ur opinion is valid, a celeb cheapy can be and often is better than expensive designers.
I do think it's psychological too, if something costs more maybe we force ourselves to say its better? Not always, sometimes they are better but yea

I don't think price influences me much, although I think I generally judge more expensive things more harshly. I think I am pretty open minded with which price point I choose E.g. chocolate, I love everything from Sainsbury's basics, or whatever it's called now, cheapest dark bar to dairy milk to hotel Chocolat. There are good ones and bad ones at every price point. M&S is a chocolate low point for me from what I've tried, although they can do chocolate biscuits, definitely not marshmallow teacakes though.... I wrote to them about those... That was a tangent no one wanted, back to the point... I think other people's views had certainly given me preconceptions with these though. I was surprised when they didn't turn out to be what I smelt and felt. 🤷♀️

I love Aldis cheap choc, their white chocolate is some of the best ive ever tasted.
And you know what. You're so right the more expensive something is the more likely I'm less polite about it when it's just generic or not very good.

I remember a friend going vegan at school and me being very perplexed that smokey bacon crisps were vegan 🤔 maybe there are some veg extracts or yeast extracts that taste meaty like marmite maybe? I'm not sure. Anyway they shouldn't ignore you. They were nicer to me and refunded me in vouchers. I think it was something like £1.20 😂 their marshmallow teacakes were not even on the same planet as Tunnocks. I love those! What exactly is a layer of jam doing in there? Plus the marshmallow was like a sheet of bubble wrap that came away from the biscuit as soon as I bit it. Ok I should calm down. Bad confectionery is clearly my politics.

The few times I've stayed in pricey hotels I think I've had a similar feeling and judginess, it's been either "this is amazing and worth it" or "no, this is a rip off". Nothing was just alright. 😂
Wore siren and sailors today cos I had a super scary meeting. All I did was nod 🤦♀️ Very comforting anyway! You won't agree I don't think, but today it reminded me of intense café, just cleaner, less foggy, nicer and boozier.

I think Choceur and Moser Roth are also Aldi brands but I will check for it! I haven't tried much choc from there. Seb said they had 9p Lindt style choc reindeers last Sunday and he didn't get any 🤦♀️ not sure how good they are.
Conversely I think things like vegan sausage or vegan bacon are for people who are being vegan for health reasons rather than ethical ones. I don't think I could manage veganism. I could probably just about manage being vegetarian though.
I prefer For her EDP over the EDT.... The latest brings sadness to me, i don't know why. The EDP on my skin is totally a powdery rose, with some fruits and a musky rose.
I decluttered the EDP, but I didn't buy the EDT. I get what you mean with the EDT. I actually don't think either were for me... I wish I got to the powdery rose with the EDP 😂 I love powdery rose! The peach and patchouli sadly took over for me... I know for sure that there are many other people who do just get powdery rose though, there must be some huge difference in olfactory receptors between different people! I would love to know what is causing people to perceive the same fragrance so so differently, it would be so interesting to find out. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it!
I met a friend for coffee one day and she was wearing Modern Muse - it smelt a lot like Lovely.
I've not tried that one, but I heard it's quite powdery so I guess that might be why?
I owned that SJP at some point and remember being on the fence about it. Since then, I have acquired a few NR such as the red cube, Poudrée., Pure Musc and Fleur Musc that I’m wearing today but I feel like I’m starting to distance myself from the brand… Besides Pure Musc, I have to admit that I’m forcing myself to wear them unfortunately. I don’t know exactly what have changed but there is something that is not agreeing with my nose anymore. All that to say that I might buy SJP to try it again as I can easily find it for 20$ but I’m not sure if I’ll buy another NR in a near future. 🙂
I am only curious about the ambree cube now I think... For her has killed my enthusiasm somewhat 😂 Julie honestly, I don't think I've ever felt so disappointed. I thought it was a guaranteed win 😂
I think I've hammered poudrée. I wore that quite a bit when I got it and in the month or two after and actually, I find it doesn't last beyond mid afternoon but I do really enjoy it when I'm in that kind of mood. I might go sniff pure musc if I can find it if you think that one is good.
I found Lovely to be nicer than I remembered... I hadn't smelt it for years though so I could have misremembered. I have been wearing the rest of the sample and I find myself reaching for it for work. It's simple, elegant and clean but also a bit dull for much fun 😉
@@dr.claire.perfume pure musc is purely musc which some people don’t appreciate. The body shop had a pure musc sent too at some point but it’s different… I suggest you try it before purchasing. It’s my night on the couch in flannel pajamas scent but not for every one! ⛄️

I put Lovely by SJP in my cart to check out so many times but never did. I'm not a huge fan of celebrity scents. There are a few good ones, but most of them are a waste of money. They don't perform well. I love M by Mariah Carey and a few of JLo's perfumes and Sophia Vergara's perfumes but that about it. 😊
Lovely is close to skin but it does last. I agree there are a lot of perfumes to avoid out there though! I would love to try M. ❤️

Nice comparison! I own lovely. I'm not reaching for it much but I do like it. I think I like the Narciso cubes better but I haven't tried all of the perfumes. It's sad none of the department stores around me carry more than a few of these. Overall though I do really like Narciso. The rouge cube gets a lot of love. Wish I could test that one. Ty 💜
Not being able to test stuff is really annoying... I only have poudrée. I want to try the ambree (peachy orange colour one). I can imagine lovely being something I would only wear to work when I had to be sensible, like a conference or a meeting with someone I don't know. @@dr.claire.perfume I did spray that last summer and it seemed to disappear so fast. Like less than an hour. I think there's a place for light perfumes, but that was very very light! I need to try it again! I'm leaning towards finding a nice raspberry. Like absolutely blooming. That might be my next one 😁
@@Tina-wi7we ambree or poudrée or rouge? 😂 Assuming rouge? I find poudrée doesn't last that long, maybe 4-5 hours, it does fade... I have quite a few raspberry scents, most of them really sweet though. I've not tried absolutely blooming.

Never tried SJP Lovely, I don’t think that’s sold here. My mom wears NR EDP, and it’s amazing for local weather. The clean almost powdery musk works well for the humidity. It’s a comforting scent to me because it smells like Mom 😅
I really like Lovely. It's a versatile everyday perfume. Great value too.

I don't like Lovely to me it smell more like Mon Guerlain which I don't like either (although I actually like Lavender scent but in other body care product and usually not in perfume)
On the other hand I LOVE Narciso EDP I'm a Patchouli lover and on me it weirdly stay a long time and I get a nice Rose.
And I totally agree it is a "work" scent or "I don't know what to choose" scent 🧡🧡🧡
I've tried Mon Guerlain a few times and I've never been too enthusiastic. I'm on the fence though. I think it's only the peach, amber patchouli combination that I don't enjoy in for her. If I could just have the rose patchouli musk that would be fine 😂

NR edp gets too much. Haven’t reached out for my bottle in a long time. I like Lovely for its wearability, it’s unlikely to offend even those sensitive to scents. It’s also calming whereas NR gets into shouty territory, they’re for 2 different moods. Another fragrance I used to have that smells similar is Lanvin rumeur (which is deceptively strong).
Yes I agree, lovely is very relaxing to me. It would make a good one to wear in a public facing role. I've not tried rumeur. I will look out for it. I've seen it in TKMaxx occasionally. ☺️

this is a super old video but i thought i would let you know that i make fragrances for myself and i bought aldehyde c14, which is a common peach aromachemical, and it has a very distinct waxy smell. thought i was crazy until i looked it up and others agree. i think thats why peach in fragrances smells plastic-y to you. its a horrible off note that will probably limit how much i use it
That's really interesting, I think you might be right. For me it's not all fragrances with peach that I dislike either, the fresher ones are generally better than the powdery vanilla / patchouli / amber ones.
@@dr.claire.perfume i think that there may be other, more sophisticated blends that mimic a peach scent, but i'm still very much a novice so I'm not familiar with them. my guess would be that those are the ones you don't dislike. when i put c14 on a scent strip to start learning it, the first thing i got was a very harsh peach, like a peach gummy candy, and the waxiness became apparent after about 10 minutes and did not go away for entire life of the scent.
apparently aldehyde c14 isnt even an aldehyde, but a lactone. maybe that means more to you than it does to me, since you have much more knowledge of organic chemistry than i do (nearly none lol)
Ooh yes I think there are some decalactones that smell like peach if I remember? I think that's what's in Gucci Rush, another fragrance that I really do struggle with, especially the vintage formulation.
@@dr.claire.perfume the perfumery supplier Pell Wall does note gamma decalactone, gamma dodecalactone, and delta decalactone as other peach materials. maybe lactones just have some off notes that require skill to work around

Narciso R.Edp is my biggest blind buy fail. All I smell is dusty, almost pencil shavings smelling rose and plasticky musk. The bottle is misleading
Wow! I think this video has proven to me that I am totally not alone with this! Before I made this video, I felt like I was the only one in the world who didn't like NR for her EDP 🤷♀️
Sometimes I like to watch videos where people share which perfumes they don't like, it can be helpful.
I hate peach note in perfumes (i.e Heat by Beyonce) so plasticy and smell like sweat 🤷♀️
