  • Find yourself lurking on social media repeatedly? Find yourself constantly logging in to check notifications? This TEDx talk, from a millennial who has grown up with it and is now an adult in their 30s, questions the bigger picture on what this is doing to our natural, instinctive human self and the re-conditioning it is causing.
This talk steps away from the subjects of social media and mental health, addiction, anxiety, depression, income generation and connection, and invites you to look at it in a fresh, exciting and inspiring way.
Kizzie Nicholson is a multi award-winning marketing communications consultant, with a first-class honours degree in marketing and communication. She is the founder of Social Fireworks Ltd, a social media marketing agency, having previously worked at the global advertising agency Publicis and Microsoft. In the past 15 years she has spent more than 20,000 hours finding patterns, behaviours and repeated habits from humans on social media, despite the change in trends. Kizzie’s knowledge, passion and creative thinking shines in this thought-provoking talk. With a personal interest in psychology and who we present ourselves offline vs online Kizzie shares her insights, wisdom and one pattern that isn’t going away.

About TEDx: In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized

Very true words Kizzie. I have seen the rise of negativity and can now see now how those making controversial comments are the ones that get me to respond - which is exactly what they want and what they are rewarded for!!

I believe strong self-esteem is the foundation for a healthy social media presence and being ourselves online. But that is hard to come by, as the opinions of others online do what they can to try and mould us into being something other than who we are through fear. Fantastic talk Kizzie, im in awe. :)

Made me think about the time I’m spending on social media and how I’m using it

She’s right. Imagine what it would be like for people who are taken away from all that they are and all others truly are. Imagine what a horrible struggle that would be internally and imagine how many people no matter how they are connected or how much money or how many likes they are effected and to what degree. People have written about this dissociative dystopia for ages (I have no mouth and I must scream) but we have solved nothing. My opinion is that this media can’t exist without being reinforced by reality and if it doesn’t work symbiotically it cannot survive off a parasitic relationship as it counts on the wellbeing of the people it feeds on. Don’t forget this is all programming. It doesn’t have to work that way, but it is made to, which is called exploitation.

    That was amazing Kizzie!
The negative interations point has me thinking about the appeal now on tik tok to bring haters to your channel.
If someone is more likely to interact because they view what you're saying negatively, then being controversial drives up your views.
So you can capitalise on the discourse they bring. Is that really a good thing?

I found this talk very thought provoking and it rang alarm bells with me. That someone who works in Social Media who is not on the hate wagon has concerns and is voicing them so eloquently. Great work, thank you.

I'm lucky i quit my Instagram 2 years ago. Best decision ever... I feel free of it, no pressure to post or to like something.
No Trips only for the pictures on Instagram, only Trips for myself and my family to make memories in our heads.
