Here in Australia we don't even let residents vote. Not even New Zealanders who have been here for 30 years and WE HAVE an open border with them because we very nearly became one country. We have people go thru a registery process and have at each polling station a HUGE book of everyone registered in the area, they don't find you in the book, you don't get to vote. If you are out of your area, they have to look you up on a database on a laptop, and if you aren't found, no vote. There's literally MILLIONS of people in this country of 26 million who can't vote because so many get permanent residency and gi no further. It's 5 years of permanent residency and ANOTHER process to get citizenship. No cops or military or I think even ANY government jobs unless you're a citizen. Once you're a citizen, you are eligible to be in the army, cops, prison guards, etc.

@@christiedunlap6214I just read someone else's post about this. Non-citizens can't vote in Federal elections. There's some select local ones that they can vote in if they've been longtime residents.

Back when the serfs were the _property_ of the land owner (the local noble) they said, "if you can escape and get into a city and stay there for a year and a day you are then a citizen of the city and your noble can't have you back." Of course, they didn't have the right to vote because none of the commoners did. Obviously that has its own set of issues, too.
The real problem is that immigration is, to some extent, what made this nation and, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. But we need controlled immigration like most other countries have. Hell, you can't just move to Mexico and get citizenship as if you'd been born there. As I understand it, you can't really own property there or vote if you're just an immigrant. (Not sure how true that is, though. Some US ex-pats certainly seem to own property there.)
Maybe the humane thing to do is to announce that, "after this date you will be arrested and deported without trial if you attempt to cross the border outside of a designated crossing point." Set the date far enough in the future that people who have already survived to cross the Darien gap can maybe get in? Maybe force them to try to make themselves a home where they are now, though. You better believe that no one is S. America wants all of those people. That's why they just pass them right through on their way north. I will say that I don't want to see people who have paid $10,000 for the hope of living in this country dying in misery because someone just figured it would be a good plan to make themselves look, "tough on illegal immigration," for votes from idiots who don't really think things all the way through.
A really big part of the problem is that crossing legally means you'd better have thousands of dollars to pay a lawyer to fight for citizenship because the damned bureaucrats run this country. That whole process ought to be far more transparent. There are people who have been working and paying taxes and behaving as law-abiding citizens for DECADES who are STILL fighting for citizenship. That's ridiculous.
Another part of the problem is that there are industries in this country (the meat-packing industry is a perfect example) that everyone is perfectly well aware are knowingly hiring illegal immigrants so that they can have, in essence, slaves who cannot complain about inhumane working conditions. Right here. In the USA. We have de facto slavery. Is that what we want? No. Enact REAL punishment for people who knowing hire hundreds of illegals so that they can enslave them. I'm not talking about the guy that goes to Home Depot and hires a couple of guys who are hanging around in front of the store looking to put in a hard day of work for some cash so he can get a job done on his home. I'm talking about the giant corporations that follow the letter of the law (that they have paid politicians to make) that allows them to pretend that they didn't know that the guy they hired who speaks no English at all and has an obviously phony ID is an illegal.

Nah he's not the answer. Trump's immigration policy didn't even make a dent and in some ways made things worse. He deported less people than obama. He only set up quotas for immigration judges, yet immigration courts have been underfunded and understaffed before, during, and after his administration. In his first two years his policies caused a 10 year high for cases to be completed. Border patrol recorded a 41% increase of successful illegal crossings in 2019 from 2016. Title 42 was a disaster. It only impacted single adults and it failed to act as a deterrent. Both crossings and evasions significantly increased after it was invoked. It is Congress that has to make the move. Only they can grant the funding the DOJ needs to expand the immigration judicial system. The numbers we are seeing are the result of decades of bad policy, apathy, congressional deadlocks, and hidden agendas by BOTH parties. You can find all this information from unbiased sources btw. Both he and Biden are terrible options.
