Some people have asked why I filmed and didn't help the baby koala...I certainly did. I was on the phone with the local WILVO [wildlife rescue association] and also Australia Zoo animal rescue and was guided by them on what steps to take. At 0:28 you'll notice my jacket on the ground near the baby. I had to wait for the mother to move away before I could get close and assist as these are wild animals. the video is has jumps in it because I was helping untangle the baby at those moments and not filming. By the time the wildlife rescue arrived the baby was free and back with her mother. I was so relieved the baby was OK. I hope that answers some of the questions people had. That was so sad and cute. I like how the baby communicated by slapping its mother in the face and then shaking her hand. These koalas are so sweet and precious and must be saved and repopulated. They are much smarter than their skeptics give them credit for, too.

That's a great question asphyxiafeeling and a real problem. This area is semi rural and almost all farms have barbed wire that was put in many years ago. In newer areas farmers are not using it as much and some older farms have repaired sections of fencing with non barbed wire but in general it is still being used and is such a problem for wildlife. hopefully there will be a change in attitudes or rules to make it safer for the wildlife to move across the land
Unfortunately farmers use barbed wire for keeping cattle in their properties but hopefully they can replace the barbed wire with straight wire and cause less harm to wildlife.
I see a lot of videos of Australian wildlife caught in barbed wire. Is there a petition to sign to get rid of the stuff? I see sheep in my own country caught too. Nasty stuff. Been caught in it myself. It's impossible to get out of without great manipulation and effort.
Hi natashahoneypot yes you're right it's terrible stuff. There are a lot of groups in Australia that are working towards raising awareness of the issue and there is now wildlife friendly fencing recommendations. To get rid of existing barbed wire fences is a huge undertaking in rural Australia but it needs to happen. I'm not aware of any current petition there have been state ones at different times but nothing nationally. I have to disagree about no need to film, it depends on the situation. There is a spare time while he wait more qualified help to arrive, and to film it is a good move.

Unfortunately barbed wire is used by farmers and it's a huge problem for native wildlife. Hopefully this can change so wildlife has a better chance

I know this is from 2017, so hopefully things have changed, but my first thought was WHY is barb wire fence like this permitted in koala habitats!?
