I think the reason why so many died even after 24 bunkers were destroyed was because of target deconfliction. I imagine that with 31 bunkers, a lot of soldiers were being targetted by multiple bunkers at the same time, reducing their kill rate efficiency. But with only 7 bunkers left after the bombing, they probably did not share targets often, thus improving their kill rate efficiency.

@@grimreapers I also think the bunkers remaining were spread out, so each bunker could still rain fire on a large section of beach. Figure that the Germans designed the defenses with a certain amount of attrition in mind, expecting counterfire. With a target rich environment and full auto fire, that's a lot of damage.
In essence, one would have to punch a hole through multiple, adjoining bunkers to have a section of beach free from enemy fire.
Yeah, it looked like in the 31 bunker version, many of them were focused on a single soldier at one time. If this was not the case, I would suspect almost all the soldiers would have been wiped out.
@@pilotalan I noticed the same. If the planners knew the B-1 was coming, they wouldn’t have sent the landing craft scattered up and down the defenses, thus diluting their fire. The targeted bunkers would’ve been capitalized upon by creating dead zones, where all defenders have joined the choir eternal… or at least are minimized, and funneling the attack(s) into those points. Further, the offshore counter battery fire would target the bunkers which survived the “bone zone”.
When planning a breaching type attack, you would normally try to take out as many targets together. In this scenario, the remaining bunkers were almost evenly spaced along the beach. This still put most of the beach covered by the remaining bunkers
You could get that down even further. Have the B1 hit consecutive targets so all of the remaining bunkers are to 1 extreme side of the beach. Then just drive all of the Higgins boats to the other side.
Marines were primarily used in the Pacific Campaign.
There were no marines in the Normandy assaults. All six divisions were in the Pacific.
Iirc there were about 100-200 mission specialists aiding the army. Mostly training, but also a few from recon, sniper, naval artillery observers, ship security and whatnot.
@@VikingTeddy , There was a company of Marines aboard the USS Texas. They were prepared to land on the beach and help the Rangers at Pont Du Hoc. However, Ike wouldn't allow it. He said he couldn't allow the newspapers in the US to say, "Marines Rescue Rangers In France"

@@Jdsofar Marines and Army are two different military branches.
Marines (as the name implies) were a seaborne force. Nowadays they're much more diverse, but they started out as soldiers specifically trained for Navy operations.
There's always been fighters on ships, but colonial powers required a dedicated and flexible force that could ride with the Navy. Redcoats on sailships slowly grew in to what they are today.
The island hopping during ww,2 was exactly what the Marines were trained for.

All other allied landing beaches were depth sounded and mapped by the fledgling SBS and canoe raiders so that the landing craft commanders had a good knowledge of how far in they could safely go and where any underwater obstacles were. The Americans refused this service and as a result many men drowned. Damien Lewis covers the role special forces played prior to and during the landings. It's a remarkable story, and a little known one.
Cap, assuming this scenario involves a B-1 traveling back in time, JDAMs wouldn’t work as there were no GPS sats back then. You’d have to use Paveways with a targeting pod for accuacy
Cap: you should visit. There's lots still to see. Bunkers are still there. Pegasus bridge is still standing. Ouistreham ferry terminal (for Caen) is literally in the middle of it all. Go overnight from Portsmouth👌. Further south towards the Trun gap there's still the odd Sherman by a roadside in the forest. The main D Day museum is huge, and most countryside churchyards no matter how small have an allied trooper buried in them, not to mention the huge fields full of mass allied graves. When you've stood there on the dunes and looked down at the sea, or worse, walked back up the couple of hundred metres from the breakers to the bunker lines it makes you realise that Saving Private Ryan only does half the job of portraying the utter horror and insanity of what those guys had to face.

Nice video, GR. Speaking of bombing the beach defenses, one of the results of the real thing was that far too much ordnance went inland during the various bombing runs, both ships and aircraft seemed afraid to hit the beach front defenses even before troops started landing. I have always wondered why the bombing runs were executed perpendicular to the beach front rather than parallel. Want to run it both ways to compare effectiveness? Fighter sweep ahead to engage the Luftwaffe and keep them off the bombers (Germans try to break through and disrupt), Mosquitos and other period bombers make the run. Perhaps add some artillery support sites further inland also, and of course, 88mm. Sound like fun?

Missing a lot to be slightly critical. Artilery, MASSIVE seawall they had to scale, land mines, and much more that I didn't post. Really would like to see this more realistic. Love what you do. Thanks!
I went to The Beaches a few years ago (24 year Royal Navy Veteran). I sat on the stones and looked out to sea. It was emotional.

I know it's not meant to be accurate, so I thought I would share a bit of history. The bombing run that was supposed to drop on Omaha actually missed due to an overcast which is part of why the casualties were so high. The army divisions also had to run up a literal mile of beach.
The tide was low which is why it was so long.
And the swiming shermans didnt manage to got to the beach

There is also the psychological effects on the Germans of suddenly losing 24 bunkers to a super weapon, and further damage the overpressure blast wave would have on the bunker network. Possibly enough to detonate the underground magazines?
My grandpa was Normandy and all the way thru France to Germany , army .. during the war he teared up at saving private Ryan remembering landing in the beach and the friends he knew who were Kia
I am not normally a wargames type person, but I did find these "what-if's" quite fascinating.
As far as the high number of casualties after the B1 bombings, I would think that if something like this happened, the men storming the beach would change course and hit the beach where most of the B1 damage was inflicted. No sense storming an area where the German defenses are still operational when there are much less dangerous areas to select for ingress.
again... I am totally not a war historian, or wargames type person. Just a casual observation from someone who just happened upon you very interesting UA-cam video.

Less bunkers equals a more target rich environment when they open fire. They don't have to worry about another bunker taking their shot. Also it was uneven on how they were taken out. In some sectors you could see there was still some convergence.
Awesome, when did JDAM-ER make it into DCS? My last job before medical retirement was certifying ER on Classic Hornet (RAAF).

I spent a week there, plenty to see, loads of bunkers, case mates, guns still in situ etc. Point du Hoc especially so. Massive craters and all German fortifications intact, complete with barbed wire! Really worth a visit. 😎
The men that assaulted Omaha beach were not USMC they were US Army Rangers from the 1st and 29th infantry divisions... Other than providing security details on USN ships the USMC was dedicated to the Pacific campaign...

I'm thinking Call of Duty/DCS here and modern AI. Can you imagine the processing power that would be needed to accurately portray this event where the AI tries to accurately work out all the decision making the individual soldiers on both sides had to make so we could switch between pilot, Allied and German soldier, or God view?
You would need a top Super Computer and even then i think it might struggle a bit.

I recommend visiting the beaches. There are a ton of bunkers still there and you can still see the concrete barges they setup to unload the big ships. Very cool! Highly recommend visiting there @cap
We need those JDAM-ERs in core DCS, for long range DEAD missions.
One thing that all of your scenarios are missing is civilian air traffic. Obviously in a war there'd be significant no-fly zones but for a surprise attack or coup attempt or other conflict in a small country, civilian airlines would be operating nearby. For example, I assume there are still flights into Cyprus and Turkey in spite of there being ongoing conflict in Syria. I'd be curious to see how civilian air traffic would impact strike operations and air defence in congested areas and how they could be exploited tactically?

another issue they had with the invasion troops was, they were highly trained for the job, but someone made an oversight. once the beachhead was established i recall reading a us general or colonel came across troops around a german occupied house that was stalling their advance. the issue, he discovered, was none of the troops had been trained how to take a house or other strongpoint. so he had to show them how, but it indicated maybe the extremely high casualties expected of the actual invasion combat troops? or maybe they just did basic then immediately trained for d-day but not the normandy hedgerows, which was another reason they got bogged down past the beaches.

People had heard somthing akin to sonic booms before, thunder claps are basically the same to the untrained ear. Of course, whip cracks are also snonic booms.
I read an account from a German survivor of the invasion about how he and many other gunners used their MGs. He said that he would fire the MG long enough to get the US soldiers to hit the ground and take cover, then he would pick up his rifle and and make accurate plunging shots to those soldiers frozen on the ground. Another recounted that he was quite shocked at how angry the Allied soldiers were. The Nazi propaganda apparatus was highly effective on its own troops, and many truly believed they were protecting Europe I highly recommend going to the Atlantic Wall Museum near Ostend Belgium if you ever have a chance. Actually being able to get in the bunkers and look out gives a creepy sense of perspective.
Loved the video @grimreapers! Can't wait for the next video man! I think from a Technical Standpoint with the Frames, you might've been able to Go easy on them if you had a chance to have each LCVP Land 36 Troops and then Despawn after like say 5 or 10 seconds.
As for the Marines, they were all in the Pacific. There was one company at Normandy and I'm not sure if they were ever landed on the Beaches.
As for the Details of "Operation Taxman", the Landings on the Island of Donkk, in the Stormworks: Build and Rescue Community, I'm trying to get the Force reestablished so you can try things out in DCS. The Closest I can find to Donkk is Cyprus on the Sinai Peninsula Map even though the Distances and Sizes are Massively Enlarged compared to the Actual Map of Stormworks. However, I have Prepared a List of Areas of Importance for you to look over as I try and get the Finalized Details ready.
• Paphos Airport (Dreimor Airstrip) and Nearby Paphos (Dreimor). The Airstrip is to the Southeast of Dreimor and on the Southeastern Tip of Donkk, about a few seconds run from the Beaches in that area.
• Port of Limassol (Terminal Spycakes). Terminal Spycakes, Named after Community Content Creator @Spycakes, Has a Cargo Container Terminal and a Railway Terminal on it. Usually an AI Forces Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Tank is Stationed either by the Cargo Container Terminal or the Rail Terminal, smack in the Middle in either case.
• The Troodos Mountain Range, Home to Mount Olympus. Above Terminal Spycakes is a Mountain where Players can Conduct Mineral Mining Operations, Mainly Coal Mining. The Entrance to the Mine is above Spycakes and can be accessed by a Winding, Narrowing Road. In some Cases, the AI Forces will have another Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Tank Stationed Here as well as the One by Spycakes.
• Larnaca (Chemical Factory). The Chemical Factory is on a Small Island in the Chain Stretching East towards Terminal Camodo. Usually the AI Forces will have a Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Tank Stationed in the Parking Lot.
• Cape Graiko (Lighthouse O.B.). The Lighthouse O.B., Named for Community Content Creator @Beautiful O.B., is on it's own island in the Chain Stretching East towards Terminal Camodo. This area is usually the Worst of the Road and Rail Bridges that Connect the Island of Donnk to Terminal Camodo because it is a Bit of a Chokepoint as there aren't any Barriers to Possibly block the Shots of the Guns on the Fast Attack Boats and Destroyers of the AI Navy. There are also Trees around the Island and if you were to try to get off the road, you'd likely run into a Tree which (aside from an impromptu act of Deforestation) wouldn't be great for your Vehicle as they'd be Damaged in the Process.
• Port of Famagusta (Terminal Camodo). All the way at the Easternmost End of the Chain of Islands from the Island of Donkk is Terminal Camodo, Named after Community Content Creator @Camodo Gaming. Terminal Camodo has a Cargo Container Terminal and a Railway Terminal next to each other as that is how small The island is.
The Island of Donkk is actually on the Western Side of the Map in Stormworks: Build and Rescue, Direction of North-Northwest Heading of about 330/340 Degrees and about 32 Kilometers from the Meier's Islands of the Industrial Frontier Expansion DLC. To represent the Meier's Islands, you'll be using Egypt with the Ports of Alexandria and Port Said as the Uran Wind Power Plant Docks and the FJ Warner Drydocks, Respectively. Both Locations on the Meier's Islands named after local Community Content Creator and Big Names in the Steam Workshop Community Uran Wind and FJ Warner.
What I can say about the Forces assigned for Operation Taxman is that the Force will have The USS Bayfield (APA-33) of the Bayfield-class Attack Transport Ships, the USS Iowa (BB-61) of the Iowa-class Battleships, the USS Cleveland (CL-55) of the Cleveland-class Light Cruisers, the Fletcher-class Destroyers USS Taylor (DD-468) and USS Kidd (DD-661) and the USS Laffey (DD-724) of the Allen M. Sumner-class Destroyers at varying points along the Planning for the Operation. The other Ships are Various Transport Ships like Liberty Ships, Victory Ships, LST(2)'s and LCT Mark 5's or LCT Mark 6's.
Let me know what you guys think about the Operation and I'll catch you in your next video! Sorry for not being able to find something a bit closer to what's in Stormworks, but it's the closest I could get to it, even with all the Maps that are Currently available for DCS.
Speaking of those D-Day German defenses, my ex wife's father, Lt Col. Garland Alvin York flew the F-5 (Photo Joe), a photo reconnaissance variant of the P-38 for the 34th Photo Recon Squadron, flying low level "dicing missions" over Omaha Beach in preparation for the D Day invasion, which earned him the nickname "The Omaha Kid." He started his 30 year career piloting P-38's in WWII, graduated to flying Jolly Greens for SAR during Vietnam and ended it in B-52's for SAC. He was named after his 2nd cousin, Sgt. Alvin York, who I hear was quite famous for his service during WWI.

I would like to see a different match-up. WW2 theater Pacific and/or European. Aircraft to be used - A4 Skyhawks each with 5 1000 lb JDAMs. Of particular interest the Battle of Midway, Iwojima, and Battle of Coral Sea in the Pacific. Rommel's African Corps, D-day Omaha Beach, and the U- boat pens.
Someone may have already said this, but the spacing the 7 remaining bunkers was such that they were able to target with interlocking fire most of tthe beach. So you still had GIs running thru a cross firre tho less intense..
The thought of being one of those boats makes me shudder as I imagine anyone else who has seen Saving Private Ryan does.

How do you setup the boat and troop assets?
Not only were the US divisions being send onto the beaches at Normandy army divisions, the divisions selected were relatively young and green. Well trained, yes, but unfamiliar with the carnage of war and still convinced of their own immortality. It was hoped that this would lend them the needed aggression to get past the ferocious fire instead of getting pinned down. Many among the first handful of waves were cut down, IIRC the first wave at Omaha took something like 90% casualties on the beach, but this dropped fairly quickly.
Although it's tempting to attribute this solely to the machine gun nests and bunkers being destroyed, and certainly the destruction of those was part of it, the bulk of it was that the beach defenses were never meant to stall an attack on the beach, the machine guns used had high rates of fire and thus consumed plenty of munition, while the bunkers themselves had rather shallow ammo reserves. Enough for 20 to 30 minutes of judicious use of the guns, certainly, but not for hours on end. The planning was that the bunkers would slow down an attack, and by the time they started being overrun the reinforcements would be rolling in to drive the assault back into the sea.

In 2018 the USA offered to transfer two oliver perry class frigates to ukraine. Wiki (yes I know) says that the US have six ships "on hold for foreign military sale" and one "on hold for donation". Say Ukraine gets all seven (possible modernized with VLS cells) plus the two Ada class (maybe throw in the Hetman Sahaydachniy or the unfinish slava class cruiser they have for fun) and see what they can do.
VLS cells aren’t really a retrofit item, they take up huge internal volume and so ships are pretty much designed around them. OHPs probably would just be too small to make it work.

The problem with the bombing effectiveness was precautions.
The planners didn't want bombers dropping loads on the troops so the added a couple hundred yards to their target.

Consequently, they bombed the shit out of fields filled with cattle and very little fell on the intended targets.
Something interesting, is that "hardened concrete" back then is not the same as it is today, there's been significant research into improving the strength and toughness of concrete. Not least of which is fiber-impregnated concrete. Modern bunker busters are designed to defeat the kind of modern concrete used in bunkers, they would make easy work out of WWII era bunkers.
The gaming community along with pro devs need to combine Arma and dcs one day.
What's the software used for the sim?
Does DCS have mods for sailing warships like the HMS Victory or USS Constitution? Would love to see something like a flight of A-10s or Apaches going ham on the Spanish Armada, or how a single modern destroyer would perform if facing off with the 18th century Royal Navy
When I visited Normandy in 1974, the remains of several of the bunkers were still there (don't know about now). The thickness of the concrete was amazing.
Having been in a bunker (working the "moving tank" and "moving truck" targets) when TPT rounds were being fired, I can't imagine what it would have been like when HE rounds were hitting the bunkers at Normandy. Those training rounds landing nearby were wild enough for me.
When you mentioned Saving Private Ryan, I watched the first 5 minutes of that scene. And it felt really really weird to hear you say: "Good news is, now there is 700 men down, I got a frames per seconds, which is nice."

It's been awhile since you dusted off & polished the old B-1R. This would have been a good opportunity to get it out and give it a good throttling, so we can all have a good look at it in all it's glory
This just made me think of something. What if naval dive bombers ie the Dauntless where deployed with bunker busters agains the German hard points
God that thing is a beast
One thing you have to remember, the Germans were not dumb, they had good generals too - perhaps even better than the Allied generals.
In the real attack, while the Allied bombers and battleships were pounding the beaches, the Germans simply pulled their men and guns back and into underground bomb-proof shelters. When the barrage lifted, they rushed out and redeployed their guns. Thats why the defenders were relatively unharmed by the bombardment, and a few J-DAMS would not have changed that. All they were doing was striking unmanned pillboxes and killing many rabbits and worms.
That may be true to a certain point, but here is the problem, the ammunition and the pre sighted machine guns and artillery were inside the pillboxes. With all the pillboxes destroyed by the theoretical JDams, the German infantry will be vulnerable to naval gunfire as well as infantry fire since they will be out in the open. Kinda hard to defend Omaha beach in the trenches with the destroyers aiming point blank at your position. Would there be Allied casualties at Omaha, of course, but with those pillboxes destroyed by 21st century guided bombs, the vast majority of the Bedford boys and Company A and the rest would still be around at the end of D-Day instead of being corpses laying on the beach.
Now if a theoretical flight of B-1 bombers used the GBU-72 against the German bunker complex at Omaha Beach during D-Day, those underground bomb proof shelters would be the final resting place of the vast majority of the German defenders and any survivors would had been so concussed and out of it that the 29th Division and the Big Red One would had been able to meet some or more of their objectives on D-Day with far fewer casualties.

Loving the content, but I would love it if you could run a simulation of this hypothetical scenario. 90s Royal Navy carrier group vs 2020s Royal Navy group. I have always wondered how far we have advanced with technology. I know theoretically the stealth f35 should be the victor in a battle with a Harrier, so maybe you could only have the humans in a Harrier to give it an advantage.

I can't recall, so I'll apologize in advance if you have, but have you ever considered trying this with the Luftwaffe able to actually intervene? More than just Pips and his wingman flying one strafing pass that is LOL I'd be very curious to see actual units in range do what they could had they been able to.
The problem is the lag, AI planes just freeze up and stop working pretty much. There are just so many units in the DDay sims we do.

You know what I just thought about? Why didn't the allies drop huge canisters of smoke on the beaches on D-day, and give each man a lightly compressed can of of air for 15 minutes of air to get through the smoke? Wonder what the effect would've been instead of leaving 5 bunkers up sporadically along the beach if you'd just taken out the first 24 and left the last 7, would it have been less casualties overall or the same.
Just wanted to point out it was not marines that touched down on the beach. It was the Army, and mostly infantry. Various army taskforces comprised of both national guard and active duty units.
An AC-130 giving some pre-dawn love to the Germans prior to the invasion would be neat to see. NV and Thermal changes everything.
I’m pretty confident I’ve watched all your ww2 videos… are we missing the Atlantic side naval surface fleet action? Sinking of the hood? Bismarck? Italian fleet in the Mediterranean? ie even though subs were a big part in much of the Atlantic, some engagements didn’t have a huge contribution from subs… Also not sure if the latest updates have the Pacific theater Hellcats? If they do, (after the latest updates) Hellcats vs Japanese lower-than-ace-skill pilots in a reenactment of the marianias turkey shoot…?!?
Utah Beach got bombed from 10,000' by B-26 Marauders. German defenses were an absolute mess afterward and our invading troops nearly walked ashore standing up.
Another reason why DCS needs a good B-26 Marauder model.
I once went on a family holiday to a little village near Utah beach, during which we visited the huge war cemetery and the town of Saint-Mere-Eglise with a dummy paratrooper hanging by his chute over the church steeple because a real one got stuck there and just played dead until nightfall when he managed to escape.
The week before, President George W Bush was at the same cemetery for some kind of commemoration, so that should give you an idea of how long ago this was!

Imagine you are 1 of the people in those remaining 7 bunkers as the others all just start exploding like that. Do you risk staying in case more is coming or do you run or surrender?

If JDAM bombs use GPS then they would not work on D-Day because there were no satellites... I realize that is not the point of the videos, but it would be interesting to see how the modern weapons would have worked in these battles without supporting satellite systems... as if just he weapons and armies were magically teleported there.
It would also be cool to simulate an EMP or EMP satellite attack and have smart weapons be fought in dumb ways.
