Traditionally the whole region of Italy surrounding San Marino has always shown a preference for socialist ideals, I know it because I'm from Rimini, the city next to the border. Culturally San Marino can be considered as a part of Romagna, as we share the same regional language, Italian accent, food and culture. They just have their own weird government and politics, for which many Italians make fun of them. The border is always open, sometimes you cross it without even noticing. Lots of San Marino citizens live in Rimini and you can only recognize them because their cars have different license plates, you can find one parked under most block of flats here.
