If your grandfather saved someone from starving during the siege of Leningrad, he was an amazing man. If he did that and survived himself, he was genuinely incredible!

That’s what I’m saying!!! Absolutely stunning! I would love to sit down and listen to the story as it would make a wonderful film/documentary. We don’t get to hear a lot about other countries’ struggles during the Great War. And this would be a first hand account. An account from one of the largest and most brutal sieges in human history!!
So crazy. How blessed he & his family is!

I lost relatives during the siege of Leningrad. My grandmother almost died during the Revolution in Petrograd. The only available food was in the country, Tsarist ruple was worthless so she & grandpa made things she could barter for food with in the country. She caught typhus from returning troops on the luggage racks. The lice were coming down like snow. Both side of my immediate family came to the states in 1924 steerage with 1 suitcase each. My brother has my grandpa's machinist tools from the 1920s.

My grandfather had a large wooden handled screw driver, which had a broken handle, so I turned a new handle for it. Now that he has passed away I keep that screw driver in my car, and every time I see it I think of him. I also have my grand mother's spatula, which has an honored place in our home. You do not need to inherit great wealth to honor your family.

Great message! I have a WWI German Army Helmet that was made into a mini bar that I inherited from my grandfather. The top half of the helmet flips backwards to open and there are 4 shot glasses and a glass flask on this inside. I remember seeing this on my grandparents bar in their basement as a little kid. I would always follow my grandfather downstairs when I would fly back to visit there during the summer time and he would make himself a drink after he finished work. He would always tell me stories about him and my grandmother when they traveled the world because they also had many keepsakes from all over the globe 🌎 that decorated the bar area of the basement. More so, my grandfather would always be passing on wisdom/ life lessons that he learned young and important things to know and to be aware of as I got older. Obviously he’s passed on now, but the helmet bar which I have here in my house, reminds me of his knowledge, wisdom and conversations that he passed on to me that I still remember at 53 years of age.
