In today's episode, the Dual Marathon truly kicks off with the start of the Resident Evil franchise! There's a lot of games to cover in the mainline alone, so let's not waste anytime and get going with the original on the Playstation! But let's also take some time to look at the inspiration for the first game, Sweet Home for the Famicom!

Shinji Mikami actually hates scary things and gets scared easily, but that's exactly why he was tasked with directing the Resident Evil series. Capcom thought that because Mikami was such a scaredy cat, that he would know exactly what makes people scared, which is what they wanted.
Is that why he hates being referred to as "The Father of Resident Evil?" I get that it also takes away from the collaborative effort it takes to make a game and pins it all on one person, but it was probably because horror isn't Mikami's expertise, the same applies to Hideki Kamiya too.

The true reason for why Johnny is doing a Resident Evil Marathon at the same time as a Kirby marathon is because he’s doing literally everything in his power to avoid playing Kirby for as long as possible.

Fun fact: the Chris on the cover isn't actually Chris, but rather a modified shot of a tie-in comic cover at the time following one of the Bravo Team members if I remember right.

Apparently it's neither Chris nor Richard, but just some random design. From what I remember, the artist said there weren't any designs for characters set in stone when he drew it, so he just drew a character that wasn't actually in the game.
Actually Chris not being able to read music is explained in RE2. You see a guitar in his office at the police station. No guitar player can read music.

My favorite funny moment from Resident Evil was when Chris laughs at Wesker and Wesker whines "Stop it." I laugh at that everytime.
I love how the marathons are two polar opposites of eachother:
One is where you fight against some sort of wicked evil incarnation of Satan with the weapons at your disposal, and the other one is Resident Evil

Remember years back when SSFF, formerly the HVGN, reviewed Sweet Home and really brought a solid bit of attention to it. Another victim of non-localization, but at least it’s gotten some attention over the past decade.
That's where I got into the game and enjoyed the ever loving hell out of it!

Man Kirby took a dark turn after the first game.
I'd also like to point out that the movie Sweet Home is a very difficult movie to own b/c it's only been released on VHS & copies for that go upwards of $50. Luckily for every one here it's not that difficult to watch the movie itself b/c it's been uploaded to UA-cam, but do keep in mind that it's not the best quality b/c it's a rip of the VHS release. Resident Evil was pretty good but I feel like the fat penguin with a hammer at the very end could have used a little bit more screen time.

Fun Fact:
Shinji Mikami originally turned down the directors chair for Resident Evil because he hates being scared. He was recommended back to the project by higher ups specifically because he knew what would actually be scary.
Sweet Home actually had some impressive graphics and effects for its time.
The best way to start my Saturday morning is with a Jill sandwich.
I'd love to have Sweet Home remade. It doesn't need to be the best graphics, just touch things up a bit. I think having that low-quality art style actually adds a bit to the horror. I just think the game is very archaic, much like a lot of the NES RPGs were at the time. It needs some quality-of-life improvements, kind of like how FF1 had with Dawn of Souls on the GBA. Keep the perma-death, because that's actually part of the charm. It's real life, there's no reviving the dead.

Discovered this channel today, watching episodes in no particular order. Last one before this was the Dark Souls one where Selene was introduced. She looked so frail and tiny that I was afraid she wouldn't make it, so seeing her in the intro to this one was incredibly sweet.

Johnny might go crazy from having to explain all the differences between the various Resident Evil 2 re-releases. Oh my god there's a LOT to cover, and that's not gonna be fun. For those wondering, check out The Lotus Prince's video on it. It's astounding really but a pretty good watch nonetheless.
Also can confirm that tank controls got me comboed a few times and on a limited save/A -rank no less on RE2. That's probably the worst aspect of them to be honest, how easy it can be to mess up.

IMHO the best port of Resi 1 is still the DS port called Resident Evil: Deadly Silence. A version which has a quick knife and your map all the time open on the second screen. What can you wish more for?!! Highly recommend it plus I recommend also to get a NES emulator for that system and play also Sweet Home on the go! ♥ :D
It also has the 180 quick turn.
Home sweet home might have been the ancestor to Resident Evil, but you can't forget 'alone in the dark' which was pretty much a Resident Evil game mechanically complete with tank controls 4 years earlier.

@SomecallmeJohnny the Bravo Team member killed by that first zombie is still named Kenneth in all versions of the game, Kevin was their pilot who we see his corpse in the remake's intro
Technically, Kevin isn't part of either Bravo or Alpha Team, he wasn't even an official member of S.T.A.R.S. He was part of the R.P.D., and he was ordered by his superiors to give assistance and serve as main pilot instead of Edward Dewey, who was the Rear Security member of Bravo Team, and while Edward is normally Bravo Team's pilot, he gave the controls to Kevin Dooley(the one who gets killed by the pack of cerberus dogs), and then; his body gets discovered by Joseph Frost; the Alpha Team's Omni Man, who gets killed by those same dogs, and kicks off the plot.
But some info about the S.T.A.R.S. member who got killed first(besides Joseph Frost, the weapons mechanic), Kenneth J. Sullivan, was the oldest member of S.T.A.R.S., (along with Enrico Marini, Bravo Team's captain); and also, Kenneth was very passionate about landscape gardening, and was Point Man of Bravo Team.

To be fair, people say it's both Richard or Chris. The dude on the cover looks more like Chris than Richard Aiken.
All I can think about after seeing this is remembering the voice of Chris also voiced Richter in SotN.
Just wanted to leave 3 thoughts on this
1) You'll see more Sweet Home influences in RE:Zero with having to drop items on the floor, and having 2 characters at the same time who often have to split up in order to get stuff done.
2) The N64 version of RE2 gives you a way to turn of tank controls through control types. 2 of these types are called "First person" which is strange because it doesn't make the game first person, but rather gives you the ability to move in the direction you push the analog stick in. This control option wouldn't return to the series until the HD versions of the RE remake and RE:Zero
3) I'm just now realizing that the plot for the rather infamous Other M is basically a Resident Evil plot. Secret government Bio weapons, an elite military team sent in with a traitor planted in said team who seems more responsible for the death of other team member then the monsters, and a sidekick character that you meet up with ever so often. I'm not interested in getting into an argument over that game's quality, just pointing put plot similarities.

limited inventory like that makes me think of when i played the first Shining Force. if i remember correctly, each character in your party can hold up to 4 items, period. i don't remember if armor was a thing in that game (it's been decades since i played it).
but i remember going to the shops and buying/selling items for each party member one at a time, and the stupid ass dialog of selling a healing item to the weapon shop (and vice-versa) of "i don't sell this, but i know someone who does"

The stun effect is actually a grapple effect where a party member is shock in horror that they got grapple and used as a shield for the enemy
I’ve been playing the Resident Evil series for the first time since the beginning of 2019 starting with RE2 Remake, but ironically, RE1 ended up being my favorite. Sure, aspects of the game like the tank controls are archaic but it didn’t take me long to get used to them.
This game just has a unique combination of silly charm with its voice acting/cutscenes and tense moments, especially on your first playthrough and that’s why I love it so much. The original soundtrack is great too. While REmake is objectively a better game, I don’t think that means the original is pointless to play. If anything, playing the original RE1 first will enhance your experience of the remake.
I started with Resi 4 since that was the big one everyone loves, also played it for the first time this year. And found out it ALSO has tank controls. Bit strange and hard to get used to but once you're good at aiming it's a perfect balance of tension and fun really. It reminds me so much of Devil May Cry which I loved back in the day, and that makes sense seeing as how that started off as a resident evil game, it's all the little things like how when you go through the door it has that blurry zooming in effect. I have started Resi 1 but I keel getting stuck because I'm going round every room and there's no way to progress. I will probably need a guide I guess, I'm pretty dumb

The difference between these two series is that one has its main character fight a monstrous abomination and the other is resident evil
25:14 If any newcomers to OG RE1 want to play it, I highly recommend the DS version. Skippable door animations/areas load just about instantly, you have your knife on you at all times with the L button, a new Rebirth game mode, which is a remix of the original scenarios, with new touchscreen puzzles, then there's the first person knifing minigame that occasionally pops up, and defeated enemies from a knife encounter can even potentially drop a bit of ammo.
I really wish they polished up some enemy behavior & hitbox timings/Iframes. For example, hunters are still frustrating to fight for the wrong reasons. You literally can't shoot them down when they're leaping midair, even know you should totally be able to.
DS version is more or less the best version of original/non-remake RE1.
Hey Johnny. I need your advice with something.
I’m currently working on my final college project for the semester, and not to long ago, a game a really want to play, Star Wars: Fallen Order came out, and I knew if I bought it I would play it to much and it would distract me from my work. I put it on my Christmas list along with Sonic Colors DS (because why not?). And I’m doing my best to avoid spoilers for the game.
Did you go through this problem when you were in college? And if you did, how did you avoid spoilers for the game so you can have an unspoiled experience when you game?
I'm not Johnny but best way to do so is to stop any online activity. There's always a chance to see a spoiler especially on UA-cam with the recommended system. If you can't do that, then I'd say try your best to avoid anything Star Wars related.
Not to worry. Star wars jedi fallen order is short. Like REALLY short. If you are worried about it taking over your life, don't be.

The boxes storage being linked means they have a huge network of baggage conveyer belts below them which lead to the other boxes. (If you wanted to make a magic storage box work irl anyway.)
The melting scene in Sweet Home was awesome in the movie.

@@keelanbarron928 I'm referencing something that happened on twitter a while ago. Ted went on a huge rant defending Nintendo blocking a certain rom website and how awful emulation is. Refusing to listen to everyone when they gave him legit reasons why emulation and roms are useful/necessary and just kept saying 'just buy the thing' even when the thing being discussed would cost like over $1000, Ted's response was "if you cant afford it, cant play it'. Pretty much everyone, John, Brainscratch, HFC, SGB, FTCR were telling him he needs to stop and shut up. He eventually deleted his Twitter but came back, apologised and didn't bring it up again.
I found the whole situation pretty funny tbh.
