Yes, I’m aware I misspoke about how long ago GEC has been using the Beavertail shield. GEC. Has only been around 13 years so they couldn’t have been using the shield for 20 years!
Thanks. They aren’t for everyone, I get that but they are worth what you pay. This one has convinced me that I need to slow down on lower cost knives and save my pennies for more GECs. The wait will be worth it.
I Bought one of these very recently and couldn’t believe I found one for sale. I’m new to collecting traditional knives and I agree with your review 100%! This is such a beautiful knife. Thanks for reviewing it!
Congrats on another GEC! Excellent choice- that is a beautiful knife! I think the jigged cherry is gorgeous and the blade is great. I had a chance to handle a GEC Allegheny in ebony at the Blade Show last summer. They are impeccable knives. Heirloom quality!
Heirloom Quality! That definitely describes Great Eastern Knives! I love these large Swell Center Hunters. Alas they just aren't as popular as they used to be! Thanks for watching!
Great get Tobias! I have the #85 pattern Beavertail from 2018...It is also in a Jigged Brazilian Cherry & has the same Beavertail shield/etch. I'm glad they brought that theme back. You have a beauty there my friend! Cheers👍
My first purchased GEC is the #971119 Tidioute Allegheny Autumn bone jigged PPP, but it didn't have the great bevertail shield. Yes, I'm hooked on GEC's already. I was doing a bn pretty good job resisting buying them, and then a friend gave me a #715118 Bullnose. I Have another GEC incoming next week if the post office gets it's 💩 together. Tubes are cool. Even the button & wax paper is part of the experience for me.
I am at the point you were 7 months ago. They are at the upper limit of my knife purchase ability. I say I won't get crazy with them, and then find a few available. By the time you decide to purchase it, it's gone. Then you see them on the secondary market at a highly inflated price. By once, cry once. They are like a drug, and the equivalent would be a hard drug. You think you can resist, but resistance is futile. 😂
I don't carry this one often but when I do I carry it in a 6" comb sleeve used as a pocket slip, usually in camp. It would be cool to see your favorite knife boxes.
I orderd one of these the second i saw the shield, also recently found this channel and have to say you may or may not have really sparked my traditional interest. cant wait till wensday when it gets here
Real nice. You just woke me up to something. It's called the snooze you lose phenomena. Up here in Canada I had ordered a few Rough Rider knives and there were two more I really wanted to get but I was going to put it off. I sent an email thanking the seller but an automatic response came back that their partner was having problems medically and I think it may have to do with the Coronavirus. So I place my order right away before this world goes crazy. These knife videos relaxing compared to the press secretary
You got that right! And until I bought one I really thought they were over-priced for what you get. It is quality and it is hand made. There is quite a bit of attention to detail. You are paying for the craftsmanship and quality control.
Very True. What I found interesting is that the folks at GEC actually bought tooling from numerous defunct American knife companies. and repaired and retooled them to bring back several classic patterns. For such a young company they definitely have a long rich history.
Every day a schoolday! I never knew that it was only the Tidioutes which get the PPP. That explains why my Northfield version of this knife (got it last week - Sambar Stag, a real beauty) hasn't got it while your Beaver Tail has. Another difference between our versions is that mine gets the number 976119, because the clip blade has a sabre grind in the Northfield versions of this knife - now there's an interesting little factoid for you!
Great looking knife. I'm in the Rough Ryder range of traditionals, however GEC is where I would go for a more expensive traditional. I would hate to spend 60 bucks on a Case, and get fit & finish less than a Rough Ryder. I'd rather spend a little more with a GEC & not have to worry about fit & finish for the most part.
The 97 is A favorite of mine, however the overly light spring is a large negative. I’m wondering if it’s possible to convert it to a lockback, or change the spring.
I'm okay with the light spring. I see how some could have issues with it but when used properly I feel safe using it. But I can see why many would want something heavier.
Thanks Tobias for an excellent and very convincing review, your enthusiasm on this GEC was so contagious (any influence from the current situation?) that I ordered mine right away! (it's still available at DLT Trading) Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge on traditional pocket knives
Freddy Lamberti, glad it was still available. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy this one. They have a beaver tail trapper coming out in 2020. Looks nothing like a Case Trapper. I’ve already set money aside for it. So much for “anything but a Trapper!”
I have the same knife and just love it but rarely carry it. It's a bit big for a secondary. I have a clip slip for it and it carries well that way. The big ol' #23 is next up. Start saving your pennies.
Tobias, where do you prefer to purchase your GEC knives? Haven't ever bought one yet, but definitely plan on it sometime. Their quality control is definitely league's above Case! Great video
A lotta folks don't like the soft pull on the 97. Why you think that is, because I love it? It's hands down my favorite GEC. I own 3. Do you think people mistake it as a lesser quality? Are they afraid of it?
I think the pull is just about perfect. I think the reason it is easier is simple mechanics. The blade is longer so you have more leverage! Blade lock is nice and tight!
@@KnifeChatswithTobias It's a very common compliant with that model. It's why 3 of the 5 original versions are still available, but I'm with you. I think it's perfect. One, GEC designed it that way. And two, who wants a nail breaker? 👍😁🤙
How was the edge on hours from the factory . My easy pocket needed help right away . Didn't have any impact on my love for it though . It's a razor now .
It was sharp enough for my needs. But I’m not as picky as many folks. I like the 1095 used by GEC. I’ve only got three but they’ve been consistent and sharp! Thanks for watching.
Always man ! Love your content . As far a traditional knives go we have similar tastes . Although I also have the modern folder addiction . Just picked up a zt 0562 ti . I think I'm going to either get the toothpick or the other one on DLT trading . Don't remember the pattern number . But it's similar to the toothpick without the horn of the powder horn . Ill look and reply again .
Both! I've been carrying the toothpick as part of my EDC rotation, as of late. Icarry the other two on special occasions so they get pocket time but no significant use. I'm trying hard not to turn into Smeagol (the Gollum) from the Hobbit.
I have used the occasional pull through but most often I use a wetstone and/or sandpaper. To be honest, Paddy's Potato Peelers is the place to go for sharpening tips. ( ua-cam.com/video/xkH1ETDpSPg/v-deo.html ) Tell him Tobias Sent you!
i just can't bring myself to get a GEC or even Case, when I start to calculate how many patterns i could get in Rough Ryder. like literally buy half a dozen rough ryders for the price of just one GEC lol
Charles Cha, I know exactly where you are coming from. I have over 100 Rough Ryders and I have often commented on just how good they are for the price you pay. I even mention in this video that I know that GEC is not going to be for everybody! A Rough Ryder Coke Bottle is going to cost $13 at SMKW. The pattern is a different style than GEC but you’re talking a difference in price of about 9 to one. A case coke bottle is a different story. They are not currently in production and often go for over a $100. (The Rough Ryder copies the most common Case Coke Bottle.) But I know exactly where you’re coming from. I even talk about it at the end of the video.
premiere pattern production should be grammatically more correct since Première means first...would you say "First pattern production" or "Pattern production first"?
I tend to agree with you. I've just seen it both ways. I asked Great Eastern but did not hear back from them by the time I did the video. I went with the way DLT had it listed. Thanks for watching. Appreciate the feedback!
Yes, I’m aware I misspoke about how long ago GEC has been using the Beavertail shield. GEC. Has only been around 13 years so they couldn’t have been using the shield for 20 years!
What do you use to protect the blade from rust, etc. ?
Wow! How lucky to come upon that! It really is like an end capped Barlow
That is a gorgeous knife Tobias! The Brazilian Cherry, the beaver shield, the jigging...all absolutely gorgeous! Thanks for sharing this beauty!!
Thanks. They aren’t for everyone, I get that but they are worth what you pay. This one has convinced me that I need to slow down on lower cost knives and save my pennies for more GECs. The wait will be worth it.

That is awesome, the wood, the size, thanks for the chat
Drooling is generally considered an uncouth activity, but my goodness it's cheap. Oh what a beautiful knife!
That thing is stunning. I'm actually a little bit freaked out over how much I like it. Thanks so much for the video!
You and me both! Thanks for watching!
That's one fine looking knife. Has to be one of the most through reviews I may have ever seen.
Who doesn't enjoy a fine beaver in their collection!
Great get Tobias!

Nice score buddy, GEC's are expensive but the quality is hard to beat. Thanks for sharing 👍

Pocketknive perfection! Great tube too
Maybe my favorite, along with the 36 and the whaler.
I really really like this knife, I like everything about it.
Same here! Its truly a fantastic knife. I still can’t get over it!
Wow, great little knife
I'm on my third also. A lot of the guys at GEC used to work for Queen, which explains why they look so similar to the Schatt & Morgan knives.
Very True. What I found interesting is that the folks at GEC actually bought tooling from numerous defunct American knife companies. and repaired and retooled them to bring back several classic patterns. For such a young company they definitely have a long rich history.
That future video idea sounds cool! I definitely think you should do it!
Thanks Tobias.i just brought the 97 coke bottle with the Maroon Micarta handle scales.its beautiful. My first GEC.
This was just my Third. They are quite addictive. Trying to control my spending! Hope you like the Maroon Micarta!
What a great looking knife, :)
Great video as always. I have the exact same one and I feel the same way about it you do. Lol.
I really look forward to the "Top Box Collection " video. Boxes are interesting., sometimes.
Tobias now your hooked my friend I have 40 of them my friend now you have the taste....... lol enjoy it!!!!!!
The other comment was funny but I had to remove it. Hopefully i can control myself with my GEC purchases. I don't want to take out a second mortgage!
Tobias Gibson no Tobias no removing comments!!!!!!!! This is mans stuff my friend!!!!!!

Have you handled a Taylor's Eye Witness ? Their barlows look amazing
I’ve only been able to drool over the ones I’ve seen on SlickSlicers you tube channel. They are stunning!
Yeah . That Rams horn is really special . And the pearl . Even the lower end ones are real nice
Which company makes Taylor's Eye Witness? I like the name.
Does anyone know what the original retail price was from DLT retailer?
