The tests are usually applied to the solid alkaloids and not to their solutions as these reagents usually contain conc. H2SO4 acid as the main constituent. We can pour strong acid in water(solutions) but the water vessel should be relatively deep to allow distribution of the heat over a greater height. However, in chemical tests, we work with small amount of samples in small test tubes so the vessel depth becomes a limiting factor.
