As a fairly new CS player who doesn't really know a lot out 1.6 and source, i love seeing these reflection episodes, and i feel that it is really good for myself to learn so much about how the mindset and gamerules! Keep em' coming!
I started with Potti, then elemeNt, now vesslan. Each interview just gets better and better. It's such a treat getting to hear from the individuals who paved the way to the beautiful game we have today. Big ups to you Thorin!
I love the fact that you do these videos thorin, acquiring very good interviews and getting first hand perspectives from pros, such a good esports history lessons for those who were first introduced to big tournaments and pros through twitch and missed out on the good old days
Team9 was 2nd tier in terms of raw skills. It was their tactics, teamwork and ability to adapt that set them apart. Also the round timer was 3 minutes back then, this allowed a lot of very complex strats and a lot of complicated setups, rather than rely on rushing and aim. The eventual change to 1.6 coming from 1.5 that fixed the money system + lowering round time to 1:30 minutes made the strategies more rush oriented but also less complex.
Vesslan was the guy who inspired my entire play style in cs. Obviously I was never even close to the same level as he was but I have to thank him for the many wonderful years and memories I had with CS back in the day. And he is absolutely right about chargers only. That format was so incredible to watch.
These interviews are a treasure and surely will help preserve the history of the game, its actually quite hard to find information about the early days of cs, except liquipedia
I was watching this the other day and an idea popped into my head. It would be really cool if you could somehow gather some pictures, of player you're doing a reflections interview with, when they were back in their prime attending lans. It would be a cool nostalgia type thing and I think would compliment the interviews well. Obviously this would be harder for some players than others but I assume most players would have some kind of picture of them from the days of attending lans.
I will always remember one legendary frag movie: Frag or Die. Vesslan was in it! So cool. And this video also grabs the topic of this Chargers vs MaxRounds which I also think sounds very good! I really want to see tournament with that format! GIVE IT!
Frag Or Die, best frag movie ever. Now that is real deal old school. Beta 6 player here. TSO was my favorite NA team back then before Moto became a dick.
One of the best interviews you've done. Vesslan great guy. I even remember him doing some showmatch back in 2009 in Inferno Online League Season 2 with the roster: XeqtR Vesslan Fisker quick ahl They managed to do some upsets despite several years of being inactive. went out against a f0rest mix team 16-5 later on in the tournament which consisted mostly of semi-pro and some pro-mix teams He is also one of the legends in counter-strike that had the privilege to be featured in bds' cs movie Frag or Die. That movie alone gave me inspiration to play this game more serious.
i dont follow csgo, but vesslan's explanation as to why chargers only is better than max rounds doesnt make sense. On max rounds, it's perfectly fair regardless which side you start on. If you want to factor in morale, go ahead, but at the end of the day both teams get a fair shot at flawlessly sweeping 15 rounds.
+fulco lumbarbie You're wrong about getting a 'fair shot' at sweeping 15 rounds. Lets imagine a map is 90% CT sided. The team starting CT first goes to a half time score of f.e. 14-1. The teams proceed to switch and now the pistol round is 100% game deciding. The team which is trailing 1-14 won't ever get a fair shot of showing who the better defensive side on the map is when they lose the 2nd single pistol round. The economy in CS prevents it, a simple solution for this would be to start each round with maximum money, but that would make the game less appealing. Charges only has none of these problems, both teams get to play equal amount of time on each side of the map. How they plan to use that time (quick rushes or slow coordinated tactics) is entirely up to the team.
I don't agree at all with vesslan's views on CO vs. MR. Playing MR means teams can showcase their prowess both CT and T side on maps. If a team is good, they will comeback regardless of whether which side they start on. Having a time based half in CO feels more unstable as teams may not always play the exact same number of rounds.
vesslan did not start MAFIA, the team was created by Robbz and Code 187 in early 2000. This team later merged with CKD21 (where vesslan played) in mid-2000 to form AFI. When AFI was disbanded just a few months after, vesslan teamed up with some new players and recreated MAFIA at the end of 2000. Just some CS history from someone that played in these teams :)
Acctually MAFIA was me, noyah, iTz, zal and two other guys i dont remember the name. We had played for 1 year when vesslan joined us, because someone in AFI was caught using wallhack. /trance
+Pär Viktorsson Thank you for correcting me trance. It was actually only me and Legion that left MAFIA and went to form AFI/A-laget with vesslan in mid 2000, and you and the other guys continued onward with MAFIA. I do remember playing with you, Noyah and Zal. Perhaps you are referring to FuZZ and Bloody as the other two guys? whejl, Hagge, hugo, puny, Robbz, Olph, r3d, Samadhi was also on and off the team during the first half-year of 2000. And yes, it was the clan leader Leon in AFI that was caught using wallhack in one of our matches and the team disbanded because of this as also vesslan (the second ranking leader) left.
+lamortee i remember you and legion now.I remember noyah contacting me when i played in a clan called wild gunmen. And we merged with MAFIA. And in the end it was only me from wild gunmen left, everyone else got kicked out
+Pär Viktorsson Yeah, you guys were on a different level and by my long list of players that was playing for MAFIA at that time, kicking most of them seemed natural :)
+sc2jolt JW misses like 15 100% chances per match now. It's getting ridiculous. I think their confidence might be gone because olof has also been bottomfragging incredibly often for the past few weeks.
I played some against vesslan. At a server called znitz. That was a clan to. All casual. But casual was a big thing back then. Now its not unfortunately.
why do people feel like there's a need to make cs:go mainstream ?!? i love it the way it is... pls don't try to fix something that isn't broken or you are going to break it
+Schnupfndrache7 lol dont fix what isnt broken??? first off they make very valid points for why chargers only would be better. second in general csgo is a very shitty game, the fact that you NEED cevo and esea to have fun speaks for itself. the community is shit and toxic it revolves around trolling deranking scamming children and thrives off a betting economy. As a player who came from 1.6 the game is disgusting from a community point of view, skill wise im GE without trying and only have fun in ESEA 98% of the community shouldnt even be considered human based off of the decisions they make in game adding a second game mode only improves a game, notice i said second game mode you fucking pleb
You can't change a game type that 500k people are playing at any time of the day, with out alienating a lot of them. This is CSGO, not 1.6 too many thing need to be changed and it will split the player base. And you are very biased and don't see how it will destroy many fun thing about this game, not 1.6.

Vesslan was amazing in game leader

thorin, we need a reflections with element, the most interesting dude around back in the day
edit: your best reflections yet
+Diogo Marques love to see element being interviewed.
Vesslan such a smart guy. Very solid arguments.

it's like stepping into a cs time machine, thank you thooorin

Good interview. I really like this guy. Especially the ending
I love this guys thoughts on charges only.

OMG nostalgia. I remember my heart dropping when I heard vesslan quit the game. I'm not sure why but he was my favorite player back then.
Potti was indeed the most clutch. In summer 2004 cpl against rival they won the ct pistol by one hp, potti was destined to win
Oh man! Det var längesedan man såg dig! Kul att se dig igen!
Oh man! Long time noo see! Nice to see you again man!
realy great interview with a true legend from early days keep em coming.

actually i think he just enjoys it more

@@Nevirus87 yes. which makes knife round in de_train for which sides sooo crucial lmfaooo
The part about chargers only really opened up my eyes. Sounds like a fun thing to try in MM actually.

We need a Reflections with Mangiacapra (or Liquid). One of the best 1.6 players from the UK as well :)
Hey Thooorin, really love your videos! Still planning on continuing the Summoner's Insight with Monte?
what an amazing guy and interview thanks thorin
Damn, vesslan was sooo good back in the days, sure miss 1.6 =)
+Yousei85 you mean 1.5 :)
Even before that, quite drunk atm, sorry :p
+Yousei85 damn right, nostalgia hits too hard :(
If im not mistaken vesslan was actually from the beta days
fangske2 He was. What I meant was more in the lines of I miss the old CS (which most would refer to as 1.6) over Source and Global Offensive.
What a heartwarming ending
0 - 12 never forget!
Very interesting content. Appreciate your work Thorin.

"Hi! I resereached 20hrs before this interview. I couldnt even manage to stay on octopshape as a salesmen."
great reflections :)
Interview element or xeqtr, I think xeqtr still plays csgo.
He did one about element ^^
Tack så mycket :)
Thank you very much
JW could really use some to spend some time in Vesslans school of how to use the awp would make him a so much better player.
+sc2jolt JW misses like 15 100% chances per match now. It's getting ridiculous. I think their confidence might be gone because olof has also been bottomfragging incredibly often for the past few weeks.
Paulo Veloso the real MVP
I played some against vesslan. At a server called znitz. That was a clan to.
All casual. But casual was a big thing back then. Now its not unfortunately.
Such a nice dude !!
Why has no one hired vesslan as a coach or player advisor/analyst/coordinator ?
I've learned how to shoot rifles thanks to his tutorials, long time ago that was.
Can you do an interview with RobbaN? He's now a full time streamer on twitch.
why do people feel like there's a need to make cs:go mainstream ?!? i love it the way it is...
pls don't try to fix something that isn't broken or you are going to break it
+Schnupfndrache7 How is this relevant to the video?
Intex
chargers instead of maxrounds
+Schnupfndrache7 lol dont fix what isnt broken??? first off they make very valid points for why chargers only would be better. second in general csgo is a very shitty game, the fact that you NEED cevo and esea to have fun speaks for itself. the community is shit and toxic it revolves around trolling deranking scamming children and thrives off a betting economy.
