Its all about the effects. Its kinda a simple sampler, but it pushes you to be creative. I used to bring it to a office job when it first came out and a co-worker actually thought it was a calculator. Its fun, but my mpc is the one! I love pairing the two together
Before you buy a second 707 make sure you look at the or tr8s because that would give you another 11 sliders for your drums and you can probably use one track on the 707 for your movie samples
I love the ko2, but after getting into it (being my first hardware sampler) I’m already looking at getting an sp404 mk2. Because I know I’m going to want to do more things that I know the ko2 probably will never be able to do. But as far as fun factor goes, the ko2 is a blast and has actually got me out of a creative slump.
Congrats Todd. Been watching your channel for a while and this seems like a good fit for what you do. 👍 can’t wait to see what you do with it. Bounce some nice pads to the MKII to free up tracks as well.
The most amazing way to use the SP with hardeare is Off-the-grid electronic phase looping (different random lengths of loops). It creates astonishing results with very little wirk and its fun to make (spontaneous/improvisatiobal). Its also a good way to escape the strict repetitive structure that creates the trapped in a loop feeling.
I think you should have bought the MPC One. I have the MPC and the SP and waiting for the EP133 but I think MPC is more straight forward and porwerful for midi than the SP. Also have the 707, the MPC is more powerfull too.
I like the 707 much better than MPC, to each their own on that one. I only need simple midi for my analog synths. In the end options are endless. I'd love two 707's but figured give this a shot first.
@@toddsmithmusic3172 I enjoy the 707 a lot too, but midi capabilities was what I was talking about, 707 Synth is a must have for me thou, nothing near in any gr0ovebox or sampler I owned.
They both can send midi out and 404 has a TR grid and live recording mode. Each can go to 99 measures. So pretty similar on that level. I think TE does has a few more midi out tracks
Not enough projects or sample time, 9 tracks is way to limiting for me. Great piece tho. If this doesn't work out I'll get another 707 used or something else
Teenage Engineering hasn't made anything I'd buy. They've made a few trinkets, a few super expensive toys, an outrageously expensive crappy desk, and while cool looking, a cheap sampler that looks like it won't last long. I mostly consider them a joke to be honest, also a rip off, so far anyways. I too would have chose the Roland SP-404MKII over the TE KO. That said, in the realm of sampling, unless you're going for character samplers from the 80s/90s (for their unique sounds, I have most of them and use them for that purpose extensively) software samplers is where it's at imo. My go to is Bitwig's sampler, in and out of The Grid. It's mind blowing what I can do in there, and it's super easy. Memory is not even something I think about and I can use a thousand of them if I need to. I pair it with my Akai controller (with keys and pads of course) and Bitwig's remotes/custom script and I don't have to touch the mouse if I don't want to. It rules. Anyways, congrats.
Software is honestly just had good if not better than hardware is many situations today. Hardware is a choice at this point in my opinion. Which is awesome, we’re open to so many possibilities of creation and almost any budget can get some kind of workflow that can give great results
No you definitely made the right choice, I have both and the 404 is way better built and the pads are much better of course. The only thing I got the KO II for was the punch in effects which is cool but not worth the price just for that
I'm looking forward to what you can do with the 404. I really need a proper sampler, the volca that I have can't even sample and the memory is lackluster.
It's a fun little unit but limiting like all the Volca for sure. I hear rumors of a new SP hitting next year but obviously I'm not well connected or anything so ... who knows.
Very interested in how you get along with this! The features are incredible at the price point, but the key-combos are so daunting that I never use mine. IMO this interface is much better suited to the simpler 404-SX.
I learned in 5 minutes this won’t support the midi I need purely because of how the machine works. It only sends out one midi channel during playback. At the same time I was realizing that it could open new doors too. Not only will it give a alternative workflow to the midi / groove box setup. It can take advantage of all my gear without the need of it all being hooked up at once. Which is really awesome. It’s going to take time but I can build up a collection of samples for all my gear and have it all on one machine. I think that’s pretty dope and could be a fun way to explore my gear in the future.

Yeah the mk2 is a clear winner over the TE ko2 imo. I don't trust TE either in build quality, especially with the issues in the OPZ and lesser but still present in the OP1 too. At least the price is relatively fair for the ko2. - I want a mk2. But with my octatrack I cannot justify it.
Definitely agree it's over-hyped right now, but I also have to commend TE on making yet again the most portable device of it's kind on the market. While the SP404 MkII is undoubtedly more capable and likely better for live performances, it just feels like a semi-portable device with its size and low battery life. I hope the EP-133 results in the rest of the manufacturers prioritizing portability on their future designs, though.
Part of the overhype ( still a good product) is the fact so many other products have been either high priced audio stuff or non related synth stuff like tables for over a year now. This is the first piece that is market friendly since OP-Z. Which did great but suffered from long term build issues.
I think you made the right call there? You’ll have so much more bang for your buck, and it will be so less limiting in terms of overall function. For me it would be whether I got the SP404 MKII or the Digitakt …I’d likely get the Digitakt as I’m a real fan of Elektron’s sequencer and workflow, I have the Model: Samples and the Syntakt so it would likely make more sense for me.
The Sp404mk2 is vastly more powerful than the EP-133 KO. I bought both. 😂 Honestly I’m mostly an “in the box” kind of guy when it comes down to actually finishing music. I’ve bought just about every one of these sampler groovebox type devices that’s come out in recent years. The two which have clicked the best for me are the Polyend Tracker and the Ableton Push 3 Standalone. I think the 404mk2 is a great box, but I kind of hate how much Shift- functionality it has, a lot of which was shoehorned in after initial release. In the end, I use all of these in a similar way- making a few samples, sequencing some patterns, and eventually dumping them into Ableton to arrange into a proper song.
Why not both ;) The TE product is more playful, the 404 has a much steeper leaning curve. I am shocked you can’t record the punch in effects, even the pocket operators record them.
I think Sp clearly winning overall but TE is nice piece of gear . Very light and accessible. I think is great device . And at this price point is even greater. They could easily charge et least twice and sell ot out in one day .
Weight absolutely matters. You would not want to have to carry a two lbs sampler because you already had to carry approx. 400lbs of stage gear like your speakers, amps, the mixing console and the piano. No way you are going to add a heavy sampler to that. ;-)
iPAD is great but I pushed mine so hard the battery became crapped out and it's pretty much useless. I'd have to pay for a replacement. I might get a new cheaper air at some point
The 404 is a far better deal especially when bought used, can't get the teenage engineering used. Also the 404 can easily be dressed up, lots of replacement knobs and skins, etc. Not sure how the KO feels but the 404 feels a bit plasticy, cheap, and not that sturdy.
Didn't get my ko ii yet, but I didn't want a sp because tutorials turned me away. 404's workflow looks like madness and probably is amazing once one's muscle memory develops.
I wanna love my sp404 but it’s difficult to work with I find myself putting it away and using digitakt. It’s just too many steps to do anything. Regardless Ima have to get the ep as well 😂 cheers man!
Imo if it isn’t working for you as a beat maker… try it as an effects box on individual tracks or whole songs, as straight sampler / resampler or as a loop maker. I love my Digitakt… they play nice together… Digitakt on drums and Sp on samples via midi.
They ain’t that far in price. 200$ isn’t massive. Still relatively in the same range of price compared to other gear. Either way, I’m not trying to say it’s better or crap on the new TE. Just stating why I went with the Roland. I do feel it was overhyped a bit and that is starting to hit reality stage.
Tooooodd! Nice pieces in a few days. Can't wait to hear what you're going to bring to the table now. You might need a 16 track mixer now, at minimum, to have more control of your sound. Enjoy. 👍👍👍👍👍
Todd, a lot of people already have the 404Mk2. LOL. You're just late to the party. You also paid $550+ for it. Also, the new 404 replacement is coming out in 2024. It hasn't been officially announced, but if you're in the know, then you know. I'm not in the know, but my friend, who works for Akai and lives in Japan, has head several rumors about the new 404 coming out. These devices are two different things. Not sure why you would associate the two. Doesn't make sense.
I didn't pay full price. I'm never trying to be new to the party. Many people compare these two. This comment makes no sense to me but you have a good day
it is a good audio interface too. Once you set up pad sensitivity exactly as you see fit, and figure out a plan for how you will layout projects , I have a key list of project names and descriptions on the side so I need not remember. I also have a notebook of detailed descriptions of what and where stuff is. The mark button with that 45sec recall is a game changer.
Teenage Engineering have killed it with the design, somewhere between 1980s cash register and a device from TVA in Loki. For people who got the old KO it’ll be dream come true. They’ve all got their limits, you gotta go with what suits you and the flow most of all that suits. I reckon you’ll have two 707s before the end of next year man, you know it inside out. Can’t wait to see you do midi out from the 404 though 👍 interesting.
Well Todd.... Ya should have picked up the KO! 404 is dated! The love for the KO is real! Sp404 is LIMITED. Im an MPC live2/ ensoniq eps 16+/ and an sp404. The sp404 has is boring! Not inspired by it at all. I will keep it with the hope that roland will update it to eventually be.... GOOD!

I guess. Ummm, it’s out and I had the option between both. Either way hope you have a amazing day
Yeah the mk2 is a clear winner over the TE ko2 imo. I don't trust TE either in build quality, especially with the issues in the OPZ and lesser but still present in the OP1 too. At least the price is relatively fair for the ko2. - I want a mk2. But with my octatrack I cannot justify it.
Yea, Octa is nice !~
I do feel this could be the start of a complete line of units looking like this EP. Like like larger PO’s
I think you made the right call there? You’ll have so much more bang for your buck, and it will be so less limiting in terms of overall function.
For me it would be whether I got the SP404 MKII or the Digitakt
…I’d likely get the Digitakt as I’m a real fan of Elektron’s sequencer and workflow, I have the Model: Samples and the Syntakt so it would likely make more sense for me.
Digitakt is a great device !
Both ? Damn , well. You’re going to know for sure.
Why not both ;) The TE product is more playful, the 404 has a much steeper leaning curve. I am shocked you can’t record the punch in effects, even the pocket operators record them.
😂😂😂 facts
I think Sp clearly winning overall but TE is nice piece of gear . Very light and accessible. I think is great device . And at this price point is even greater. They could easily charge et least twice and sell ot out in one day .
Weight absolutely matters. You would not want to have to carry a two lbs sampler because you already had to carry approx. 400lbs of stage gear like your speakers, amps, the mixing console and the piano. No way you are going to add a heavy sampler to that. ;-)
Great choice! But you never tried Koala sampler on your ipad? It's awesome too 😊
iPAD is great but I pushed mine so hard the battery became crapped out and it's pretty much useless.
404mk2 holds its value extremely well. Ive been lurking to buy one used and after shipping I'm not really seeing anything under 410.
It has held value very well for sure.
Life is rough bro !! lol
Imo if it isn’t working for you as a beat maker… try it as an effects box on individual tracks or whole songs, as straight sampler / resampler or as a loop maker. I love my Digitakt… they play nice together… Digitakt on drums and Sp on samples via midi.
We are talking about two different price ranges, I believe everyone’s expectations were too high of course the 404 is better than KO.
@@toddsmithmusic3172 Nah I agree 100%
Tooooodd! Nice pieces in a few days. Can't wait to hear what you're going to bring to the table now. You might need a 16 track mixer now, at minimum, to have more control of your sound. Enjoy. 👍👍👍👍👍
It will allow TONS of long samples to my tracks. Will be fun
At the price points of the machines, why not just get both. lol
Could still snag a TE used later on. Never know.
This comment makes no sense to me but you have a good day
Listen to me i have a mk2 and it randomly fried itself send it back and get the ko 2 already ordered mine 😊
Cool , hope you enjoy it
@@toddsmithmusic3172 I hope your mk2 dosent randomly fry like mine did I’ll post a bud about mine soon
@@natemakesbeats2138 Every company will have random failures. My friend has a moog with a bad filter knob. Sucks when anything like that happens
separated tape layers :)
Bro , that’s like matrix ?
Al from Ministry ,so yeah true. @@toddsmithmusic3172
shoulda got m8
I’m 100% happy with my purchases, thank you
SP404mk2 = less talk more knock.
it is a good audio interface too.
Nice ! Good to know
Teenage Engineering have killed it with the design, somewhere between 1980s cash register and a device from TVA in Loki.
Design wise they win. They are designers first and synth heads second.
A second used 707 could definitely happen at some point.
I can only comment with my eyes and wallet bro, never owned any TE gear.
@@TheSemtexCow I owned a few PO’s and OP-1
And I’ve had my eye on the 707 for months.
I think it’s how I found your channel.
Gotta love those Roland sounds.
GOOD!
I’m 100% happy with my choice. It’s a great piece so far and stronger than KO. KO does have strong points tho. You have options for a reason. I made the correct voice for me. KO is more limited than 404 in many ways.
Everyone has different experiences my friend. Hope KO offers you what you need !
Many are experiencing fader issues with the EP-133 KO
