My first big european night at Old Trafford,I was 13yrs at the time. The following Wednesday we had Newcastle back here in the league cup and we hammered them 7-2. We used to rush home at the final whistle to watch the highlights on Sportsnight. Happy days!
my second European night too - after the Ajax 2-0 1st round 2nd leg win :) what a fantastic atmosphere that night !! ..... and the Newcastle 7-2 League Cup thrashing too !! But then typical United, we threw away 2-0 half time lead to Norwich, and lost 0-1 to Ipswich - and all 4 games were at Old T in 14 days .. !
Didn't realize just how many great players Juventus had. It was virtually Man Utd v Italy - Zoff, Tardelli, Scirea, Bettega, Causio, Gentile, Boninsegna...
You guys are really lucky to see your old players and matches, for example Fenerbahçe had golden years in 60's and 70's and there's only a few broadcasts of the matches to see old legends..
3:00 ...terrible mistake by Dino Zoff. Thanks a lot of this clip sending clip. We can sense the great atmosphere of good old Wednesday evening European match when UEFA Cup was still appreciated competition. This is much better to watch than any of these bubbles of champions league corporate brand.
After winning the european cup in 68 united went on the slide ending up in the 2nd division, but less than 2 years later were playing brilliant football again, great to watch the reds around this time, i was in the crowd that night singing Animals at the end, those two fullbacks Gentile and Cucceredo were real tough bastards.
United started well that season and were top of the league in early October. Then Buchan got injured and they couldn't function without him. He came back in mid-December and, of the 21 league and cup matches between Christmas and mid-April, United W 16 D 3 L 2. By then they were in the FA Cup semis and they threw three or four of the remaining league matches before winning at Wembley.
Great classical Juve shirts: it's been at least 15 years that Nike and Adidas are not able to do that kind of shirts, despite all their supposed design "experts" Juve then won the 2nd leg and went through and won the Cup
Mervyn, agree with you. On paper definitely the best, on the pitch unfortunately came second in the league and lost to an obviously inferior Hamburg team in Athens. I was at the Villa Park game and were superb over the two legs. The side was effectively the same as the 76-78 team, with the addition of Rossi, Platini and Boniek.
This was Juventus's second visit to Manchester in the EUFA Cup that year. In the previous round, they had lost at City 0-1 as well (I was there) only to win 2-0 in the return leg in Turinn with Tueart hitting the post with a few minutes to spare. Juventus went on to win the EUFA cup and formed the backbone of the Italian team that went to Argentina for the 1978 World Cup including beating the eventual winners (Argentina ) 0-1 during the qualifying round before being undone by an outstanding goal by Haan o the Netherlands during the "knock-out" round. Italy also accounted for England failing to qualify for Argentinian World Cup although that was more due to their poor performance in qualifying against "lesser" teams as they failed to qualify on goal difference.
Kiddo header for City in the first round at Maine Road - 8 years after scoring for United in the ECF !! How many players have scored in Europe for both United and City ??
Juve were negative away with Trap but outplayed United at home. Arguably the best Juve team ever 76-78 with no foreign players and the backbone of the Italy team in the great 78 and 82 world cups. No al calcio moderno!
imo the best juve team was that of 1982/83 which was basically the 1982 italy team that won the world cup (scirea, rossi, bettega, tardelli, gentile etc.) and on top of that included the best two players in europe at the time Platini & Boniek. They were awesome in beating the Euro Champs Aston Villa 2-1 at Villa Park in March 1983.
That was a really memorable United team stacked with young talent, they should have gone on to dominate English football like their successors did in the 1990s. Man for man they were their equals. And yet all they won was an FA Cup. Sacking Docherty was a dreadful mistake.
Probably the best Juve team ever, back when the UEFA cup was arguably harder to win than the Champions Cup. Man Utd were on the slide in the seventies but on their day could still mix it with the big clubs. Seventies football is overlooked nowadays but teams all over europe played the ball forward and NOT sideways !
The slide was over by the time of this match mate- Tommy Doc created a young, exciting team. They could have achieved so much more had he kept his trousers on.
I've always remembered this particular man utd team.. Maybe young man utd did not familiar with the name.. Gordon Hill(my man utd first favourite player).. Gary Daly(maybe man utd best penalty taker of all time).. 1977 this man utd beat Liverpool in fa Cup final.. Daly was not in the team any more, S Houston was injured and young lad called Arthur Albiston was taking his position.. Since then, I knew this my team...
I'm from Russia and before I could only read about these matches in reference books. which my father bought, but I compare these matches with today's ones and I like the matches of the 70s more, because there were different styles: the British played mostly in the English team, and the Italians in the Italian team, and there seemed to be more passion than money
i was in the scoreboard end, right behind hills wonder volley, we we all over juve but they were dirty fuckers, ironically gentile was the worst, then they played us off the pitch 0-3 away,
So beautiful watching english teams made of english players and italian teams of italians, different ways of playing football....now its an awful mess of races/nationalities a babelic mix of styles of playing. But forget what I'm writing....nowadays its called RACISM.
You' re right. But this is what we' ve got today. I' ve a question for you : the stand behind the goal in the right was complete and crowded. Now ? What is happened to the old Old Trafford ???
Excellent images. It looks like a game played a month ago.
Have a nice day. Thank you so much for the superb video. Enjoted and of course liked. Greetings from country Azerbaijan
Not my favourite team but I appreciate all things 70's and British! Thank you for this video! Such memories!

Martin Buchan was a classy player, I used to love watching him play especially along with Jim Holton.

C'est pour moi, la meilleure équipe de la juve.
Causio et bettega devant
Cabrini, scirea et gentile (le poète) derrière
L'équipe d'italie de 78 à 80%
i see Causio -Bettega a lot of time at that time .....fantastic players for a lot of years :)) Causio was a "brazilian" kind of player
Je suis d'accord avec toi, et n'oublie pas le magnifique Romeo Benetti.

My friend, you'd better rewatch the game at Athens. Juve could have been glad losing only 1-0

This team had only italian players, the team 83/85 was good because Platini and Boniek.
We should have at least 5 champions league
So many great players we had in the late 70's and beginning of 80's
Not a space on the terraces loved Old Trafford then best ground in England and supporters then .!!!!

That would be seen as great result today.
Gordon Hill. A winger who get you 15 to 20 goals a season. And they go on about Wilfred Zaha . Would score that amount over 3 seasons.
Sexton was a fool to sell him ...
