Excellent footage with great tunes! My uncle flew many missions in the F-105 over Vietnam out of Takhli AB. On one particular bombing mission over North Vietnam, he was flying with two other F-105's, they were the only planes in the area at the time. Suddenly, he heard over his headset, "PAT!!! BREAK LEFT!!!" Just as he did, a SAM exploded exactly where he had previously been in the formation. Later, when he and the other two pilots returned to base, my uncle asked which one of them warned him about the SAM. They both told them that they didn't warn him. Besides, pilots only use their call sign on the radio instead of their names. He later wrote in a newspaper article how the Lord spared his life that day over North Vietnam.

Hello Lawrence....read your note, brings back fond memories...When in bound to the target getting off the tanker, we'd listen Paint it Black and Gimme Shelter. Flew F-4's from 68-74, three tours of running and gunning with MiG's, AAA and SAMs and the like...When we avoided SAM's, they'd get close enough so I'd see the Soviet Star on the SAM and see the control surfaces flipping back and forth...then a large explosion...Remember rolling in on Bomb Runs seconds after the 105's rolled in...a 4 ship, each carrying 6 750's...we'd call for pods on...great time for a young guy. I'll bet was on the tanker or bombing missions with your Uncle. The Lord spared lots of our lives...I'm convinced of that. Ask your uncle if he's checkin six lately

One of the bigging shots, showing a two-seater F or G model, with the ZB fin markings, that was from the 6010th Wild Weasel Squadron, I was assigned in September of 1971 to the 388th Fighter Wing, the 388th Combat Support Group, in the Avionics Squadron, fixing the Doppler system on the 105s. I worked on that aircraft from time to time. Brings back some not so fond memories, but still memories of my youth.

I have seen a lot of close in airstrikes out in the bush and hill top LZ's where fired our 105mm howitzers for close Marine grunt support. Mostly F104 Phantoms out of Danang. Wow, really fast and always two aircraft in a flight. Napalm and lots of bombs. Those planes were loaded for bear on every mission. Oh, rockets too, fired in salvos. This music really fit the footage in a rock and roll kinda way. One has to experience a bunch of air strikes and learn later the Marines and Army personnel that were saved that day. You could get Tactical Air in 10 minutes or less anywhere in Vietnam. I was told that. The planes are always refueled and rearmed and ready to fly at a moments notice.

The Vietnam War was, so to speak, a limited war. Each strategy had its own limitations. It was a war where people shook hands with one hand and punched with the other. This way, even the battles that can be won cannot be won. I don't think America lost the Vietnam War. 58,000 Americans died. There are still MIA people in Vietnam. I hope you can return to America soon. Thank you to all the military personnel who served in Vietnam. god bless

I read "Thud Ridge" written by a F-105 pilot. Because of political and military restrictions, the VC knew exactly what flight path the F-105's were forced to fly to their target, and lined the path with AA thick as trees in a forest. This and other tying the hands of the pilots negated their technology and tactics to the advantage of the enemy. I wish those who made such restrictions could have flown those missions under constant fire. I bet then they would understand what the "Pucker factor" meant.

@@millicentsquirrelhole582 Agreed that "Thud Ridge" is a great book. Written by Col. Broughton in 1969 as a critique of the rules of engagement. My father flew with him in the 355th out of Takhli. The story about Col. Broughton strafing the Soviet "trawler" unloading SAMs while the Shell Oil tanker was taking on oil in Haiphong Harbor got him big trouble. My father came back to the states during Christmas after a year in Thailand in 1967. Frustrating mess of a conflict for sure with courage and fear all over the place. The Weasels would fly a 4 ship formation and attract SAM fire and then roll in on it with anti-radiation missiles. Unfortunately, a bunch of them got shot down also. Dad prevailed and I went on to be a Naval Flight Officer in the F-14 and P-3.

The requirements was that to keep costs down everything had to be off the shelf and the engine was a commercial airliner but had a afterburner. I seen one up close and it looked like a huge engine with a aircraft wrapped around it. Not knocking it because it was a outstanding aircraft and if it was what I heard about it true makes it even more!

Lost so many F105s over Vietnam that it essentially finished them as an operational type I read once.
Not sure how exactly true that is but its staggering to think that it could even be claimed.

War is big business with soldiers and ordinary civilians paying the price. I’m a Vietnamese American who left when i was three. I’m completely overcome with emotion watching this video. Seeing my country get bombed and the thankless American soldiers having to do a job ordered by American policiticians.

    Lyrics:
    Ooh, a storm is threatening
    My very life today
If I don't get some shelter
Ooh yeah, I'm gonna fade away
War, children, it's just a shot away
    It's just a shot away
War, children, it's just a shot away
    It's just a shot away
Ooh, see the fire is sweepin'
    Our very street today
Burns like a red coal carpet
    Mad bull lost your way
War, children, it's just a shot away
    It's just a shot away
War, children, it's just a shot away
    It's just a shot away
    Rape, murder
    It's just a shot away
    It's just a shot away
    Rape, murder yeah
    It's just a shot away
    It's just a shot away
    Rape, murder
    It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away, yeah
    The floods is threatening
    My very life today
    Gimme, gimme shelter
    Or I'm gonna fade away
War, children, it's just a shot away
    It's just a shot away
    It's just a shot away
    It's just a shot away
    It's just a shot away
I tell you love, sister, it's just a kiss away
    It's just a kiss away
    It's just a kiss away
    It's just a kiss away
    It's just a kiss away
    Kiss away, kiss away

A six pack of Napalm and high drag 500 lb-ers worked great on zip tunnels...We'd listen to Mick and company coming off the tanker inbound to targets in RP V and IV, gimme shelter, paint in black...never got tired of the music and never got tired of engaging MiGs, taking out AAA and SAM sites...total young boys game....at the end of a mission....here Billy take pull as the back seater passed the flask up...
