    So here's how to make it work (after a few hours of trial and error) in luscious stereo! A) Add/instantiate a "FX Loop" Pedal to your rig and insert a cable to the FX send and B) patch to an external stereo pedal's mono/guitar input (in my case a Strymon Timeline). C) this is important: Go into the Gigboard's FX Loop pedal settings and turn down the send level (more on this later). D) Route the stereo outs of your stereo/external pedal using a "stereo 1/4 inch Left/Right mono to stereo mini" adapter cable-- that you can now plug into the aux in (stereo mini) input of the Gigboard... Some additional notes: The return level of the FX Loop pedal becomes irrelevant (since you are not "returning" to the (mono) FX return--you can turn that return level down or not ...doesn't matter... it is "out of the loop"). Also there are no aux-in "levels" in Gigboard (Headrush assumes you will use the volume out of your AUX IN intended device--mp3 player, iphone/ipad whatever you might use to "play along with" ) ... which is why they have an aux-in in the first place... and that aux in is pretty much set (loud) at unity gain. SO, this is why you need is to actually use the "SEND LEVEL" of the Rig's FX Loop pedal to get your external pedal to mix/sit well with the other rig pedals in the chain... and LASTLY this is super important and totally non-intuitive: turn the FX Loop pedal OFF when you are back into your Gigboard rig page. Why? Because when its "on" it really messes with the overall signal chain, since remember you turned it down to get a good mix level out to your external pedal!) and so, (when on) it unnecessarily alters the level of the rig chain as well as messes with the stereo of any pedals that might be in "front" of it... being a mono loop... aye aye aye. Talk about gotchas...Basically it just adds a level of complication, that when it's off it (thankfully) it still "sends" a "nice" signal (you control) to your external stereo pedal(s). Anyway.. hope you got all that ... So whoever (like me and or review-meister here) was thinking to either not get it, send it back, or upgrade to the 16 lb. monster because of that (cheapscape marketing ruse IMHO... c'mon a mono FX Loop in a stereo device??? wtf)... well, this albeit, somewhat clunky workaround, can get you that luscious stereo after all. Hey! Great review nevertheless!

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  5 років тому +1

      That is a very creative solution. I do hope however, that HR will add a real stereo effects loop to the GB. In the meantime, I returned this and got the 16 lb monster and love it!

  • @Skylabz604
    @Skylabz604 3 роки тому +7

    I think I know why it lacks a stereo Fx loop. For live applications nobody uses stereo in venues etc. all stereo inputs get summed to mono in the PA otherwise there would be major phase issues. As far as for recording you typically record mono in your DAW and add your stereo effects inside the DAW for post production. So in essence having a stereo FX loop on your pedal board would be useless.

    • @constantinosmavroyannis9409
      @constantinosmavroyannis9409 2 роки тому +4

      also the stereo effects loop only makes sense if you are going to use two amps or at least two cabs. otherwise you can just put your stereo effects after the gigboard as studio gear. i only put them there anyway in my axe fx for example

I've got a fishman platinum di now and a L6 M9 for effects. Could this Gigboard replace both? I'm also really worried about this like feedback which can totally ruin things when going LIVE. Does this have anything like a Notch or Phase switch? Thank you for all ur vids. They r really helpful.

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  5 років тому

      I sent my Gigboard back so can't experiment, but I would think you could create a stereo rig. Set up the left side with amp but no cab. That output goes to your power amp/cab. Set the right side up with amp and cab. That goes to the sound guy.

    Great review! Question:
    So, for example; even though you can output a stereo ping-pong delay, if you have for instance a stereo chorus pedal in the loop, that chorus signal will just ride in mono over the delay effect? Is that true?

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  5 років тому

      The effects loop is mono, so if you want a stereo effect, you will need to put the chorus before the loop to preserve the stereo image.

  • @BillKeilt
    @BillKeilt 5 років тому +38

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  5 років тому +3

      Dang - you gave it away Bill! :-) I actually think that there is something more to this omission. I discovered that more than one retailer has it listed as having a stereo effects loop. I contacted HR tech support and they confirmed that it is mono. Wonder if that was the original plan, and then it changed at the last minute?

    • @BillKeilt
      @BillKeilt 5 років тому +4

      @@chordsoforion Good point about the last minute change. The Headrush seems to have more functionality than the Line 6, and yet the price points are about the same (the Headrush is $50 more.) Maybe they realized the stereo circuitry and interface was going to push them out of the price point they needed to hit.

      It has stereo effects when adjusting your signal chain to split mode. This is only possible in the virtual effects. Seems like the complaint is the external effects Loop, but at this price point and its intended purpose seems reasonable. As for me, if I what through the expense of having stereo external effects to use in the first place I probably wouldn't be purchasing this pedal anyways. I think the idea with these Advanced Digital modelers is to replace analog and simplify your overall rigged. Or for someone that likes to Noodle giving quick access to change of sounds. If you don't plan on using the internal effects and amps this would be a big waste of money.

    Glad I picked this (well the bigger one). I have a lot of trust in this because I love what InMusic has done with the same CPU and touchscreen in their MPC Live and Denon DJ Prime products. They can keep adding features. Touchscreen interface is the way to go for a good amount of future proofing. The Lynx Hilo audio converter has a small touchscreen also and because of that, they’ve been able to put out some really interesting firmware updates. Always the possibility for any controls needed on screen. MPC as done the same, beautiful fx interfaces now onboard, vs their original utilitarian value and slider design. I believe in Kemper too because their Virus synth is excellent coding... but I don’t need to model amps myself and the price is just too up there anyway, plus looks more difficult to use. Had an expensive Line6 amp a decade ago and it was junk, never gigged it and the main encoder knob went out within months of very little usage, sound was always too thick and dull, uggh.

    I’m looking for some type of modeler to record at home, play live as an amp and effects and one complete solution going to FOH. If money were no object I would buy a AxeFx. I also tried an elev. rack and loved it. I may buy one of them used, but want to study some more. Did the gig board sound as good and feel as good with the amps since you’ve used it more after this vid? I play blues rock and hard rock. I don’t use many effects except a little delay and reverb and way from time to time. Some cover songs require some flange or phaser.

      I actually sent the Giogboard back shortly after this video posted because of the mono effects loop issue. I replaced it with the full Headrush Pedalboard. Although I use several other amp modelers, the Pedalboard is the core of my live rig (which includes 2 Headrush FRFR cabs). The amp models and effects in the Giugboard are the same as the Pedalboard and they all sound great for my use in ambient guitar. As far as your sound goes, only you can be the judge of whether or not they work for you.

      But, hold on. I have very limited experience in these tech matters, but, based on this awesome review I read the comparison charts available on a “large retailer site with a 45 day return policy.” The following is from the HeadRush manual.
      8. FX Send Output (1/4”/6.35 mm, TRS): Connect these outputs to the inputs of another effects module, an
      effect pedal, or the effects loop return of an amplifier.
      9. FX Return Input (1/4”/6.35 mm, TRS): Connect these inputs to the outputs of another effects module, an effect pedal, or the effects loop send of an amplifier.
      So, isn’t a trs cable stereo? Using a “y” cable into a trs in fact creates a stereo effects loop. Does it not.
      Last, there is this, again from the manual.
      Stereo vs. Mono
      The outgoing signal from the HeadRush Gigboard can be mono or stereo, depending on the models in your rig, the signal path, and which outputs you are using. An indicator near the end of the signal path indicates the current configuration.
      The signal will be stereo if you do any one of the following:
      • Use any stereo effect model in your signal chain. Even if you have placed mono effect models after it.
      (This is possible because the mono effect is simply applied identically to both channels and not summed).
      • Use a split signal path, even if the split paths rejoin before the output.
      • Use a double-amp and/or double-cab configuration (i.e., if 2X is on).
      The signal will be mono if you do all of the following:
      • Use no stereo effect models in your signal chain.
      • Use the linear (not split) signal path.
      • Use only single-amp and single-cab configurations, if you use an amp or cab model at all.
      Alternatively, the signal will be mono if you do any one of the following:
      • Use only the L/Mono output (of a stereo pair) on the rear panel.
      • Reduce the Rig Width output setting to 0%.
      To adjust the width of the stereo field, tap the Out icon at the end of your signal path, and turn the third parameter knob to adjust the Rig Width output setting. This affects stereo signals only, not mono signals. 100% uses the full stereo field, while 0% produces a mono signal.
      So, it seems that the internal effects are working in stereo and processes the sound as such.
      Just wanted to add this for discussion. If I’m incorrect, so be it. I learned something!

    I had the full blown Headrush, but sold it because it did not have the auto wah envelope filter...you know, the kind of deal that the guitarist from the New Bohemians used on What I Am...you can adjust it's sensitivity to do the wah thing triggered by how intense you pick...I called them because I thought maybe I was just overlooking it, and the rep I talked to said they didn't have one in there. It's in Helix, it's in the inexpensive BOSS GP10. It was a deal breaker for me, because I use that effect on more than one cover songs in one of the bands I'm in...here's just a couple examples: Summertime from Kenny Chesney, intro of Tattoos On This Town from Jason Aldean...just saying...they may have it in there now, because this was a while back...

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  5 років тому

      To me the lack of a stereo effects loop is definitely a non-starter for live, as I run a stereo rig. For recording, it could be worked around by placing the stereo effects after the Gigboard's main outputs on the way into the audio interface. This is limiting however, as there is no flexibility place those effects earlier in the chain to combine with the Gigboard's internal effects. Say for instance, I wanted to use the Strymon Timeline, but still wanted to use the Gigboard's stereo reverb options. Typically I would place the delay before the reverb. Can't do it without a stereo effects loop.

    The Headrush "Pedalboard" has the stereo effects loop. The "Gigboard" does not. The expression pedal, extra foot switches, and the stereo FX loop are well worth the extra money for the "Pedalboard." I love mine.

    Can't wait to see the A/B between the Headrush and the HX Stomp! Out of curiosity, do either of them take external distortion pedals well? Amp modelers have done a great job closing the gap on clean tones, but they haven't gotten quite as realistic when it comes to dirty tones. Would either of them take well to having an OCD or a Soul Food running into them for overdrive, or a Big Muff for fuzz?

    Im mostly interested in how it is doing the heavy tones. I have GT-100 and I can get a good heavy tone from it, but im not fully satisfied. There is so much background noise when driving high gain, I can hear it even when using 2 gates in the chain. Also I noticed that there is only one distortion and only few amps that I like the sound of, the rest is crunchy or clean. Even the amp sim called Core Metal is too soft. It just sound like ass when chugging. Most modelling units sound great in the clean and crunch channel, but they tend to get in trouble when dialing these heavy tones.

      Hey Jack - I saw your other comment about chugging too. I don't go for a lot of heavy tones here on this channel am not very well versed in playing heavier genres. That being said, I find that the the Gigboard (and the HR Pedalboard) is easier to set up for amp sim tones VS. the GT-1000. The HX-Stomp is a little more "fiddly" to work with IMO, but also gets some good tones.

      @zwavelbron 5 років тому

      I tried this out because it seemed like something that should work. However the answer is no, at least not on the Gigboard (I guess it's the same for the Pedalboard). You can combine one of the built-in cab sims with an IR though. But the option to add an IR is greyed out if you already have an IR in that series, same for cab, amp, and some of the effects.

      @@zwavelbron Thank you! Good to know. I wonder why none of the reviews mentions such limitations. Its just like no other review I saw mentioned that the fx loop is mono. Can you tell us, what other effects can be used only once in a rig? What about stucking delays?

    • @zwavelbron
      @zwavelbron 5 років тому

      @@schniggedagges74 For the effects other than amp/cab/IR (which you can use multiple of but only in parallel it seems), it varies depending on what effects are used. So that's a bit hard to say. For example, I noticed that most types of distortion pedal were greyed out when there was already a distortion pedal + 2 types of EQ. Removing one of the EQs made all distortion pedals available again. In a clean rig (just amp + cab), I managed to add 5 reverbs AND 4 delays into the rig and reached the maximum of 11 slots. The first one to be greyed out was the DYN DELAY, followed by the AIR REVERB. The rest was still available when selecting the last effect. So it looks like stacking delays/reverbs should work. And it sounds pretty cool actually, so I saved that random test preset I made :P

    Hy a newbie with the gigboard,
    I just need to know how to use the Gigboard with my amp!?
    I would like to use the Gb. as a multi-effects device in conjunction with my amplifier!
    So I have an ENGL Extreme Aggression Amp and I want to use an overdrive effect of the Gb. infront of my Amp, and the modulation after the preamp in the FX loop of my amp,
    is that even possible?
    And I would also like to use the ext.amp to switch my amp from ch.1 to ch.2
    If all of my requirements are possible, how do I switch and wire this to the GB?
    Is it possible for you to do a video about it?

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  3 роки тому

      I would suggest reading up on the "4 cable" method. Basically what you will do is: 1: plug your guitar into the GB input, 2: set up a patch with the effects loop block right after the overdrive effect and the modulation after the effects loop, 2: Plug the effects send from the GB into the input of your amp, 3: take the effects send from your AMP and plug it into the effects return of the GB, 4: take the main output of the GB and plug it into the effects return of your amp. This will allow the distortion to be placed before your amp input and the modulation to be in the amp effects loop. I can't do a demo as I send the Gigboard back right after I shot this video due to the lack of a stereo effects loop.

      This device does have stereo. Listen with headphones and you'll hear the effects he's playing many are in Stereo. You can also create two separate chains and then use the settings the pan one of them left and one of them right.

    The Headrush Gigboard product description does state "mono FX loop" as you stated and only has one FX send and 1 FX return, unlike the Pedalboard that has 2 of each, it may not actually be mono. The 1 FX send and 1 FX return connectors are stated in the Gigboard User Manual specs as both being 1/4" TRS connectors. TRS connectors have two signal connections, and one ground connection. So why would HR put balanced TRS connectors in an effects loop where most effects devices are unbalanced TS connectors? It could be that if you have an external stereo chorus effects box that uses a TRS stereo connector for its input and output then you would get stereo out and take stereo back in IF you have inserted a stereo effect in the Gigboard signal chain or a 2 amp split chain (which makes the it output stereo on the guitar amp outputs). If you have a stereo chorus that has one TS input and 2 TS outputs, 1 left and 1 right, then you can't run them both back into the Gigboard, but if your effect box has one TRS stereo in connector and 1 TRS stereo output connector (with 2 signals one for left and one for right), then maybe that will give stereo coming out the guitar or line outputs. Did you actually try using a stereo effects box with stereo effects in the GB signal chain? Just a thought and I may be wrong. The Gigboard User manual specs don't state mono for the effects loop connectors and it does not so on the rear panel as it does on the Pedalboard's rear panel when using just one of the 2 loops.

      Yes - I tried TRS stereo splitter cables and verified that it does not work. That was before I contacted Headrush technical support and they verified that the effects loop is mono. Their web page AND the company I bought the device from all stated "Stereo effects loop". Because of my call, they corrected the statements. If you read through the comments, you will see more discussion on this. In addition, someone recently posted that they thought HR is preparing a firmware upgrade to create a stereo loop from the existing TRS jacks.

    @14:50 It does say that on the product page, but the quick-start manual
    says the FX send is TRS. and the return is TRS. Also "Connect these outputs(s) to the inpute(s) on another Fx unit", + You can set the return Input to rack or stomp level. www.headrushfx.com/downloads
    Then again, on the board comparison page It says _
    Inputs:
    1 x 1/4" (instrument), 1 x 1/8" (aux in), 2 x 1/4" (stereo return)
    Outputs:
    2 x 1/4" (L/R, mono), 1 x 1/4" (external amp out), 1 x 1/4" (FX send)

      Not sure what happened to my original comment on this. Sounds like you might be implying that the FX loop is actually stereo because the connectors are TRS? Well, I can assure you that at present, the loop is mono, just as the product page says. Before I sent the Gigboard back, I tried running stereo effects in the FX loop using TRS to TS splitter cables and all it does is phase cancel the effect. I then contacted Headrush tech support directly about the matter and they confirmed to me that the FX loop is indeed mono. I even made a request for a product upgrade to a stereo FX loop. And shortly after I contacted Headrush about this, all mention of stereo FX loops were removed from places like Musician's Friend and Sweetwater.

      @@chordsoforion Wasn't "implying" anything - Just taking your "grain of salt advise", wondering why it says what it says on the 'board comparison page' (2 x 1/4" stereo return), and foolishly hoping it was true . Too bad it's not _(- _ - )__bc your playing with the Gigboard seemed even more fluid than w the Line 6. I was looking to replace my HX Effects which is at an authorized service center for a back-ordered joystick/encoder + It's been 12 weeks already. Thanks for going the extra mile by checking it out with the insert cable, and contacting their tech support !
