I've heard that some people are experiencing hotter and louder 14" Macbooks with the M4 Max and have returned them for a replacement. I bought the 14" M4 Max and ran my benchmarks, as I always do with a new computer, and I have had no issues with it being loud. I played some games on it with uncapped frame rates and handled it well, and quietly.
@@trevorhanson3489 great video, your 16 and 14 are swapped for Diablo 4 in the video. So one thing I thought was strange was that for the 14 inch M4 Max, when running in low power mode compared to the M3 Max in low power mode the M3 Max is faster. The M3 max and M4 max have the same amount of battery life even in low power mode but Apple clocks the M4 max lower in low power mode…
@ apologies, I honestly didn’t test low powered mode because I just want all the juice at all times, especially being a power user. But that is interesting, I wonder why they did that?
And great video by the way. One small suggestion. Reduce the black screen pauses by a lot. Especially the long ones like the one at 8:51. Keep these videos coming.
Hey Trevor, I’m looking to buy a MacBook Pro with either the higher end Pro M4 Chip or lower end Max M4 chip. I do play occasional games such as League of Legends. Would the Max be much better than the Pro performance wise for gaming or would the performance difference be minimal? What are your recommendations? 😊
I personally think the M4 Pro chip will be your best bet, you’re going to get a ton more battery life, lower temps, and league is an easy game to play. Please don’t buy a Mac solely for gaming, it’s not worth it at the moment. It gets the job done but there are better solutions
Did you test how long does the 14 inch battery last? And how does the low power mode perform for tasks such as watching youtube? I am really between 14 inch pro 24GB or this max model
Not watching UA-cam per se, really only gaming and some stress testing. But the battery dies significantly faster on the 14 inch max chip. 14” m4 pro should work wonders for years.
Thank you for your review! I need a new computer asap and have been considering a MBP 16” M4 Max for work, photography/video, PS, LR, Wacom Tablet and possibly a CAD program like sketchup or autoCAD to replace my 2010 27” iMac (3TB/16Gb due to upgrade). Huge leap I know! I can’t wait much longer. I have an old iPad Air 2 for portability which needs to go as well. My question is since it’s so pricey to get a laptop for portability, should I consider getting an iPad Pro for now, which is pricey for specs I considered est > 2k, then later get a Mac mini + monitor or go with MBP M4 Max est 4k and buy a 27-32” desktop monitor on down the road?
Are you asking if you should get an iPad Pro before the MacBook? If so, then no, there’s a ton of things you can’t do on the iPad. If you’re thinking of pairing an iPad Pro with your MacBook, then perhaps grab a 14” and an iPad and use it as a second display when on the go.
@ That answered my question as I really need a computer now, can’t afford iPad and laptop at the same time and don’t think I’d like the Mac mini. I prefer the 16” MBP and having a hard time with specs and price to accommodate above mentioned apps and I feel like 1 TB won’t be enough as I’ve almost used 3TB on iMac. M4 Max or M4 Pro? Any external hard drives you’d recommend?
@ I 100% would recommend the m4 pro, especially if you already do everything on your current setup the m4 pro would work wonders. Typically any these days in terms of SSDs, don’t bother with an HDD. There are a bunch of “Black Friday” deals for 4TB ssd. Can’t go wrong with Samsung or crucial.
You mention Diablo 4, which is not a Mac native game. The battery needs to power a translation then another translation before it runs. Try timing a native Metal 4 game.

I assume it may vary from person to person, but it definitely or hot on me within seconds of opening certain applications.
@@trevorhanson3489 If it seems out of the ordinary, I would contact Apple.
Your gaming gps chart is switched up. I guess the 16 inch has higher frame rates than then 14 inch.
Uh the 16 inch has the higher binned chip

The fake out of focus is not doing a great job…

@@trevorhanson3489 Really appreciate your advice. I’ll do a little more research as this purchase will need to last me for 3-4 years minimum.
@ No problem, I’m still looking at my options as well, currently testing 24gb of ram vs 48gb of ram on the M4 Pro.

Thanks for giving real world battery numbers under heavy loads
No problem, really is a huge factor for most, thanks for watching.

Torn between the convenience of traveling with the 14" vs the better temp management of the 16"
Hmm I’m biased bc I love the extra screen. On the go I’m completely comfortable using only the 16 inch when doing things.
