    Nice work! I know scrapers get a bad name because of the end grain roughness. But I remember what hardwood and ivory turner, Bill Jones said... tools don't scrape, turners do! Your are actually cutting with your scrapers! Even the card scraper is producing feathery cuts! I hope your UA-cam journey is increasing your income! Your skills are too good to be paid as a mere treenware maker!

    I was working with some elm last week that I got from a neighbor, and I could only get one or two passes before having to hit the grinder. When i looked closely at the wood to figure out what was going on, there were little white specks of minerals in the pores. The wood looks the same as what you were working. Here they call it Chinese elm. The really annoying part was when I polyurethaned the vase, it would dry to a gummy finish. The wood is beautiful, but a hassle to work. As always great video.

      Exactly what we get here in PNW! I love turning it but I spend 5x the time sharpening as I do with other hard woods.

    Turning wood is pretty much my favorite thing to do. A close second is cooking. There is a UA-cam chef who says "Never Let the Food Win", meaning that it may take unorthodox/creative methods to get to the desired result. "Mom's" tried and true ways sometimes just don't cut it.
    Here, you had some cards up your sleeve and didn't let the wood win. Keeps life interesting, no?
    Another great video, Sir!

    I’m from Canada and turn American Elm. The grain and color of your bowl is very similar to American Elm wood. It is a very hard heavy wood that is difficult to achieve a nice finish.

    Im only 1 minute into the video but need to write this comment now! I once had a rough turned and dry beech bowl that had something in it as well that made the tool become dull really quickly! I even tried a PM steel on it. To my amazement the edge it lasted for literally 1 second until it was dull at the point of contact with the wood. I don’t know what it was, the timber came from an old beech tree, really big, around 130 years old and had no visible signs of being such a character. What could have causes this “character”? :D

      There is minerals in those kind of elm, well at least here in Croatia that dulls the tools so fast , its like silica that can be in timbers...

    Finally struck up the courage to try hand grinding an asymetric bowl gauge as in an earlier presentation you did. I think it's a bout 4 or 5 mill shorter now😂 but finally got it very much as you showed, cracked it ! cuts a treat, still wary of taking too big a cut but cuts really well, thank you for that👍regards, Tony (UK).

    That's the kind of timber I most often turn. Not full of grit, but dry and hard. My selection is getting wider. But I still have quite a bit of that good free stuff that really builds my skill rapidly.
    I had one piece of elm from a tree that grew beside a beach at a Lake. the 1 side was just fine, but the other side was full of grit from the wind, whipping up sand and it growing into the tree as the tree matured. It was quite an interesting phenomenon.
    It was good to see you use all of the tools in your box to find the solution to that difficult grain.

    This looks very like Wych Elm, Ulmus Glabra, often containing mineral deposits, which (😂) do indeed dull even the hardest tool edges. I have turned many such pieces and as you point out, it doesn't move very much in the drying process. 👍👍

    Never seen the card scraper technique before, so big thankyou. Is it possible to card scrap the inside of a bowl (this is whereI tend to get the most stubborn tearout).

    • @scottnewsom7572
      @scottnewsom7572 8 місяців тому

      You would need a curved scraper, but even with that, having your hand inside a bowl with a metal scraper would be dangerous business.

    • @tomislavtomasicwoodturning
      @tomislavtomasicwoodturning  8 місяців тому +1

      I have video on thar but I dont like using it on inside.... ofcourse this method is not the safest so each is responsible for own safety,but what I found on inside is that with gouge and scrapers I get the best surface possible....so on inside no need for card scraper.....

    • @greggerstner5599
      @greggerstner5599 8 місяців тому +1

      You can use a card scraper on the interior. Sinply turn off the lathe. There are curved scrapers out there or you can shape your own. Also vary thin and flexible scrapers. I know of at least one production bowl turner who does this. Sometimes the grain just fights you and a little time with the scraper will save a lot of coarse grit sanding.
      Wonderful video. As usual. Elm is a favorite. Not always as spectacular as this,but a wonderful texture for bowls.
