  • If you've taken a career break and are now looking to return to the workforce, would you consider taking an internship? Career reentry expert Carol Fishman Cohen thinks you should. In this talk, hear about Cohen's own experience as a 40-year-old intern, her work championing the success of "relaunchers" and how employers are changing how they engage with return-to-work talent.

Big companies in the developing nations should consider this as well, break from career could be due to various reasons and if the person is returning to work, it only means that he/she has come out as a stronger individual with better EQ & IQ and against all odds. I enjoyed watching every bit of this talk. Thank you.

only if employers think the same way... but also i guess competition is strong. I mean if two people have about the same resume and education, and one has a career break, the employer is sure to favor the one without. So... it's understandable and frustrating at the same time.

I've personally been on a 3 year hiatus from the workforce. I was dealing with a lot of personal issues that hindered me from doing anything with a clear head. I actually JUST got back into it as a intern in fact. Interesting to see this video at this time in my life. Stay up yall. Nothing is permanent.

I’ve been in career break for about 7 years (maternity leave). And started to plan the ways I could get what I want. I got TESOL (from ASU), won a scholarship (fully granted) Ph.D in management studies. I still have loads of things/obstacles/hardships cuz I m out of my comfort zone I had. Morally draining,at times frustrating, but believing in myself. It is really hard to manage your family life and research studies (due to high demands)

A change in career path meant a 5 year absence from full time work. Ive earned a second degree in a field far removed from my original education... and while I look forward to a 3 month placement, I'm not looking forward to the corporate wall I hit trying to get back in. Old, traditional, conservative managers and executive are still breathing and choking the life from the new face of the work force. So... I hope more companies see this and learn from it.

I quit my software job to write as it has been my passion since I was 7. I am 25 now. I spent the last 17 months in the process with no results. My writing is not going well. Some really depressing things happened over the last year and hindered my writing even more. I went through depression, took therapy, experienced anxiety, and felt out of place almost every day. But I am still pursuing my writing. I have set up a deadline for myself and if my writing isn't over by the deadline, I am planning to apply for software jobs again. Trying to keep it together despite constant self-doubts and fear of failure. I never thought I would be this demotivated to post on a UA-cam video for reassurance. Any other writer who could relate to me? Any comment is appreciated.

Why can't I find any information about people who need to return to the workforce without having had a highly focused and successful career beforehand? I have been at home raising my kids for nearly 9 years and the jobs I had before were minimum wage and part time so that I could also finish my degree. I have never had a job in what I got my degree in and the jobs I had while finishing school were ones any high school kid could get and frankly ones I'd never want to return to. Every UA-cam video and article I find about "relaunchers" refer to highly focused career professionals, like social workers, Wall Street people and freaking rocket scientists. Many of us are not in that category-- not even close. I was in my 20s when I married and made the decision to have and raise children at home before tackling a career. Where can I find information and guidance for people like me? I'm not a lawyer, account, neuroscientist etc., etc.-- I worked at the YMCA while I completed a degree in English and I've taken care of my family for almost a decade. I return to the workforce in 5 months. I am fully prepared for entry level employment but it would be great to find resources reaching out to my specific demographic. There are a lot of us out there.

+Jonathan Green I think she's referring to a state of unemployment in-between-jobs in general, whether by choice or by circumstance. An all-encompassing "How to get back into the workforce if you've been out of the loop" so to speak. In which case I'm assuming the term "break" is being used here since taking a break sounds like a thing that you don't need to be ashamed of, and is something that people should be able to do in any sane environment.
Whereas for some unholy reason society tends to treat the word "jobless" as some sort of symbol of willing laziness and thus therefore a sin, while said stigma tends to make people beat themselves up for not having a job more than they're already doing.Buuuut I might just be trying to find a silver lining here. Tbh the video's word choices and tone DOES sound like some sort of cheap, stuck-up, feel-good motivational speech coming from a successful upper middle class person out of touch with reality
That having been said, I'm sorry to hear you're in such a bad situation. Hope things get better for you.

I'm saying achieving dreams and realizing ideas need continuous effort. It's like riding a bicycle - you gotta keep pedaling if you want to move forward. If you stop pedaling, the bicycle loses speed. If you take your hands off, the bicycle loses direction and crashes.

    I came home from work.
Was tired. Sat down on the sofa. Put my feet up.
Wife brought me a glass of water. Son gave me a sheet of paper 📄
    English. 17 /100
    BM. 35/100
    Maths. 40 /100
    Physics 37/100
    Chemistry 42/100
    I lost my temper
    😤😤😤😡😡😡
    "What is this?
All the time on phone and TV.
How dare you show me such marks?"
    😡😡😡
    Wife said: "Be patient. Listen...."
    I told her:
"Shut up. It's your love and pampering that has spoilt him. He is no good."
    Wife said: "Oh. Really?"
    I said:
"No one in our family has performed so badly ever."
    Son said:
"Dad. I was cleaning the old cupboard and I found this."
"This is your old school report card."

career breaks are for the privileged. Career breaks to us lower class people is called unemployment & it means you get less breaks or you're gonna be homeless if you don't keep going. We need a TEDtalk from somebody we can relate to more, not these upper & middle class people. We are on the cusp of class based warfare & we need start connecting people, use a platform like TEDtalk to branch to the lowest class or they will continue to feel alone.

Call it a career break either way by choice or not.. It's still being UNEMPLOYED. Its all about your perspective. Your as low as you feel. Maybe that's why some people that want jobs are unemployed...it starts with your mental state. Be optimistic and stop thinking that you are your income!

3,5 years ago I was incapacitated due to a life crisis... I felt miserable and ashamed, as if I had failed in life... Guilt....
I left work without saying a word to anyone... Stopped going to facebook.. Isolated myself at home, locked my door and turned off my phone... This lasted for basically 3 months...
Before I got picked up by.... pffft... Family protection agency... And from there I have spent the past 3 years working with myself internally to somehow find happiness and passion towards life again... To be honest... I am really struggling... I recently turned 28.... And I feel as if I have blown my chances and that the train has left the station a long time ago....

+Alexander Maxhall - There are 7 billion people in the world. What you don't know is how many people are where you are, or have been where you are. There will be hundreds of thousands of them. You just don't know any of them. You think your alone...but your not. Please take the time to find WishCraft book on the web, I got mine as a free PDF download, and see Byron Katies work - which is also free. These two resources were what most helped me. I'd like to suggest you go to a train station near you, grab a coffee and sit there and watch. You'll see after one train comes another. And another, then another. Go watch James Marshall at the 21 Studio on UA-cam, and Tea time with Teal. When your ready, life is out there waiting for you to turn up and life will love you all the more for having been through what you've gone through and left behind, but not forgotten. You have so much to give the world and people around you.

+Alexander Maxhall It's good that you are really struggling. That means you haven't given up. The average age of success in business is 55. Winston Churchill lived with his mother until he was 30 and never got a job, then suddenly became one of the most influential politicians in history. The only thing any of us can ever do to ensure success is to keep trying. If you never stop trying and never give up, someday you will find that break you need, you'll get lucky, you'll figure it out, and everything will fall into place.

+Z-Dine Studio Also Adolf Hitler was homeless for years & a failed Artist. He went on to become one of the most famous men in history. Van gogh was a drifter for most of his life & his paintings only became famous in the last 2 years of his life at the age of 37. JK Rowling lived on welfare for years before writing the Harry Potter books. History is full of examples. Its very true. I believe that many of the people who struggle in early life become very successful later on. If they dont give up that is.

Highway Phantom Lol. Interesting list. I found out the other day that 30% of America's billionaires came from impoverished families and a good number of them have been homeless. It's never quite a straight path to success in life. I think people get stuck on that a lot. It's so very normal to fail, to suffer and to break down. Happens to the best of us.

A bit of disconnect. She says the benefit of relaunchers are that they have settled, that they know what they want. And then go on to contradict it by saying it's the relaunchers responsibility to figure out if they still have the passion for particular position or skill. Seems like employers are not unfounded in their worries, according to her.
Also, title is misleading. It's not how to get back after break, it's more like a history of and what employers are currently doing to attract relaunchers.

I know this is 3 years later, but the content creators doesn’t have any control over what commercials google shows us. They know so much about us and they tend to us that against us as a way to mark relative products. Mark the commercial as a thumbs down and click that you no longer want to see it anymore. That should work just fine.
