From what I know the Testudo formation usually has the sides covered as well. Would make sense in this situation, they had it in the first Rome Total War. I don't know why they didn't add it in the second. It seems to be rather useless since all it does is add a few seconds of survival but they die quite quickly anyway. It would be interesting to make a comparison with less archers firing at them with and without the Testudo.
Some one already did it barely makes a difference, buys you ten or so seconds at most, useless and unrealistic, really takes out strategy because it dosent force you or allow you to force your opponent to flank. Archers and horse archers are far too over powered, they should only be able to harass and pin down units not kill entire units or even a third of them, they shouldn't be able to inflict anywhere near significant casualties
Says something about a series when a Testudo turns from viable anti-ranged tactic; to barely works with a patchwork solution; to alright but not great making it situational than the answer to everything; and finally broke ass Turtle-formation why is it just a number boost I can clearly see that the unit isn't in formation and they're already invinvible.
From my point of view it’s not so important. I’ve read somewhere that testudo was used most in sieges, where it makes sense to raise the shield in such a manner but not relevant at all to cover the sides. On an other side note, do the soldiers on the right side hold the shield with their right hand?? In the front corners do 3 people cramp together to protect left (or right) top and front?? It seems awkward anyway.
No the test is fair because a real testudo would have shields covering the sides but CA are trash developers who can't do shit right for their overpriced garbage.

Would be accurate if it were the romans vs parthian cataphracts The arrows werent a threat they just pinned the romans down in the place and disrupted their formations, what really defeated the romans in carrhae were the devastating charges by the cataphracts Just like the mongols and huns unlike many people wrongly believe the horse archers werent a threat but their heavy cavalry was, the archers had a secondary role like aforementioned, the real strength of all the forces and winning battles was the cataphracts, which the mongols, huns, parthians and sassanids both had as a third or more of their forces. Battle of carrhae? Horse archers had a large a loud amount of ammunition and peppered down the Roman units with a constant fire. Just because other romans learned to fight them doesn’t mean that they weren’t effective againsed earlier campaigns into the east
It's good, but to be fair the testudo formation was designed to repel any infantry or cavalry, and resist arrows. However, as it’s so well demonstrated in this video, testudo was exposed in the rear and (sometimes) on the flanks. Also, they’re ridiculously outnumbered here. Sooooooooo yeah… of course they’re going to die.
With hours of testing i found that the armor values on shields are inaccurate because i noticed that units die easily even with an enormous shield with enormous armour value because when a arrow hits the damage is mitigated but not negated so i fixed it and made it more realistic deleting the values of armor and instead replacing them with the % block chance, so for example a shield like scutum has a 80% of covering that means that any arrow that is blocked the damage is completely negated and when a arrow manage to hit a soldier the armor of the soldier comes to play at mitigating the damage.. This way is far more realistic and a formation like scutum works as intended.
