Captain Stormalong | New England's Giant Sailor
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- While stories of Paul Bunyan circulated throughout American timber sites, stories of another American giant made rounds in harbors and sea towns of New England: Captain Alfred Bulltop Stormalong! Already 3 fathoms tall as a newborn, Stormalong made his way to Boston at age 12 and soon became the captain of his own ship, a clipper so huge it had to be coated with soap to make it through the English Channel. Hear the story of a giant made famous by sea shanties, and how he shaped coastlines and battled sea monsters!

Oh yeah! Celebrate America's Birthday with Captain Stormalong, the mightiest sailor in American Mythology! 🇺🇸❤️🤍💙🇺🇸❤️🤍💙🇺🇸❤️🤍💙🇺🇸❤️🤍💙
Please do Davy Jones next! His lore has always been so obscure yet ubiquitous in pop culture and I'd love your take.
I live in Connecticut, and yet somehow, I’ve never heard of this guy! (Also, I still think his name served as inspiration for the name of Stormalong Harbor from the Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack.)
I live in Connecticut, 2.
Im from CT as well and never heard of this
Cool, another person who also lives in Connecticut.
In your defense, the myth has stronger roots in Massachusetts than it does in Connecticut! (We're based in Connecticut also!)
@@MythologyUnleashed no kidding? If you don’t mind me asking, where?
I enjoy stories like this. They are very handy for d&d worldbuilding and adventure planning. Thanks for the great content!
That's so cool.
I wonder why captain Stormalong isn't as popular as Paul Bunyan, his archenemy was the infamous Kraken!
I love your videos on Paul Bunyan, John Henry and of course Stormalong, but can you please do videos on other American tall tales like Joe Magarac, Pecos Bill, Febold Feboldson, Calamity Jane, and Annie Oakley?
Yes!
I remember reading about Stormalong back in elementary school, but ever since, I'd never heard any mention of him in any other media. Eventually I forgot his name and worried that it was just some weird aberration my kid brain made up. Thanks for keeping these stories alive and proving I'm not crazy.
I love these tall tales, thank you for making this video!
So cool, didn't realize how much mythology existed in the world
Such interesting giants in America I want to learn more
New England represent! 🇺🇸❤️🤍💙🇺🇸❤️🤍💙🇺🇸❤️🤍💙🇺🇸❤️🤍💙
I hadn't heard of Captain Stormalong before. Very interesting!
I absolutely adore this channel. Keep up the amazing work.... I particularly love the monstrous myths and legends such as Spring-Heeled Jack.
Please make a video about the mythology of Davy Jones please
❤ all your video's mate 👍.
Yep! Great video! I'm such a patriotic person that I knew I'd get into this one! 🌹💜🌍
Please make a video about Johnny Appleseed.
Can't wait for the Pecos bill stories
Yaaaaaargh mighties !!! let's storm the sees with these giant and muscular muscles of the Captain Stormalong !!!
A sailor giant how cool is that?
I loved this video.
Perhaps do one on the Leviathan
I found this after researching about General Taylor. He is often referred to as “Stormy” or “Stormalong”.
Hmm...
Charybdis and Scylla should be next in line. Maybe Charybdis first and then Scylla, or perhaps do both in the same video.
Have you considered doing a story about Bill, the giant bull snake? A friend of Paul Bunyan. Unfortunately, I have only ever found one collection of stories about him, and that was when I was a teenager in the 70s. I have not been able to find that book ever again.
Do the myth behind the Kraken and Davy Jones and the Leviathan
I can imagine Capt. Stormalong as Popeye the Sailor's first captain he served under.
I read these "tall tales" in a book or some books in school, like random library books, but like...idk where they came from. I feel like i recall another story of a sailor who was tiny for some reason that was in these random books, but i don't remember his name. It wasn't Gulliver, it was someone else. Tom thumb?
For some reason I feel like watching The Misadventures of Flapjack.
Oddly, I heard the white ciffs of dover story in reference to Paul Bunyan traveling.
Please do a video on Pecos Bill
You should really do a video on vampires!
Links to the music in the video please?
Can you please keep the American folklore element going by doing Pecos Bill? I'd love to see since I live in Texas.
All I can think about is flapjack hearing that name.
Is Stormalong related to American General Taylor in any way? He is also often referred to as “Stormy” or “Stormalong”...
I believe he went to jotinheim from Norse mythology
I absolutely loved this story ty for sharing such a marvelous tale heart warming indeed 💙
I never heard of this myth before.
Old Stormalong was John Jock Willis Sr. no?
I wonder if the main setting from The Misadventures of Flapjack, Stormalong Harbor, was named after him.
Definitely intentional, as the entire show has a 19th century and early 20th century nautical theme.
One wonders if perhaps Captain Stormalong wasn't at least part of the inspiration for Popeye the Sailor Man.
does anyone remember a series of american folktaled done by I think nelvana, they did animated stories of Paul Bunyan, captain stormalong, and one story about a fireman in New York City and stories about Pecos Bill of Texas, there was one live action version about it and damn me it was hilarious
Im not just thinking about Johny Cash's song about John Henry
Wow
I have a book of Tall tales in American I wonder if he’s in it
Who’s better Paul Bunyan or Caption Stormalong
What about Pecos Bill? World's greatest Cowboy!!!
Oh yeah, I love to see Pecos Bill! IDK, if Mythology Unleashed covered it or not. I'll go check it out.
There are many sea shanties about him.
i never know of this american folklore before
The common thread of of American folk heroes just dying or just disappearing/going away once civilization no longer needs them is actually kind of depressing personally. In some ways makes one wonder why work to be a hero at all in a way.
In some of them it's simply a case that the world has moved on and their way of life isn't needed anymore. In one version of the Paul Bunyan story he's put out of work by the invention of powered saws and one version of John Henry's tale has him survive his famous contest with technology, but he willingly retires when he comes to realise that, since he's getting older and the machines will keep improving, a rematch would likely have him lose.
A lot of american folklore is inspired by european folklore. Giants were figures in germanic and celtic mythology and it was brought to america
Stormalong fought in the Second World War in the Pacific
Never heard of him.
This makes me think what his biological parents are like.
Can we just get rid of the New England name already this is America
The northeastern region is called New England you dunce.
It’s here to stay
