First Intercity | NIMBY Rails episode 3

- After no small amount of time waiting to earn some cash I might just have enough to build an intercity line to see if there's more money to be had in longer routes. This is NIMBY Rails gameplay let's play series, and the third part of it at that.
***********
Once in a while I post something of value in here.
No, that isn't true except for in the super-secret secret message section right at the very end of the description. To get to that point you'll have to scroll past a big lump of links and nonsense all of which will enrich your life... if you let them.
How would you like to seize control of the bombastic outro? As a performing video monkey I'm now offering you the opportunity to do just that. Within reason. Obviously, I won't tell you where the line of "within reason" resides, but you can try it and find out. Swing by my Wisio and I'll see what I can do : www.wisio.com/...
Right, this is how you can get the very best out of this channel, and lend a significant chunk of help toward its future success. If you have $1 per month you can gain access to exclusive videos, the magical Discord channel, and consider yourself a member of Fail Brigade:
Option 1 (several different tiers available): Patreon - / colonelfailure
Option 2 (one size-fits all): UA-cam - www.youtube.co...
All new merchandise everybody! That's what you want. Forget paying the rent! Buy a tshirt instead : colonelfailure.com
Do you want to follow a Twitter account that is actually cheerful? Not in the kind of way that offers life-affirming, inspirational text with a waterfall in the background, but in a jolly, acerbic kind of way? Follow me on Twitter. That's what I do. / cnlfailure
Do you want to know what videos are coming up each week? A few people do. I don't always get around to publishing the schedule, but when I do, I do it on Facebook. Not sure why I chose Facebook, but there you are. / cnlfailure
That's all for now. You can go about your business.
(*) - Today's secret: Ho boy. Do not link your super-expensive intercity line to your cheap-as-chips tram routes. They do not like that AT ALL. - Ігри
80 percent of passangers used "transfer", so you DO need trams on both ends of the line. It`s like Transport Fever - trams/buses in the city never make significant profits, but they feed your train lines.
instablaster.
Finally, a naming scheme that just makes sense: #1, part 2, episode 3 :)
Followd up by IV
We have followed it up with a #4 and a #5...
We may yet have Nimby Rails video VI...
The "refused high fare" thing happens at their DESTINATION, it's not them getting a refund before boarding. They are on your train and get a free ride. It was a recent patch that did this, so that you couldn't cheese the fares.
noice vid, btw expanding the trams in mexico city is worth it, youve got a lot of the center of the city to cover, an extra line wouldnt hurt
we are still hoping for a long series of this!!
please keep making them and we keep watching them.
"Spare me, today was going to be a banner day!"
Classic, I'm stealing that quote!
Thank you for putting in the extra time between recordings. Looking forward to the next episode!
It's like Cities in Motion, where you need feeder lines to the long intercity lines...
Nice vid, good progress on the intercity. I think the trams are vital to feed the intercity lines although making little money themselves. Maybe setting up a star pattern feeding system rather than loops might be an option, not sure but maybe worth a try. Looking forward to see more of this
Just one hour until I can finally also tinker with it, I really can't wait. Haven't been this exited for a game in a while (let alone one in a very rough early access state).
Super excited for the release of this game! But thinking I'm gonna play with unlimited cash until a few patches are out lol
Ah Mazatlan.. Part of the Mexican Riviera (along with Cabo San Lucas and Puerta Vallarta) ports of call for the Love Boat. Lovely drinking destination when I visited courtesy of the US Navy back in the 80s.
I say it again, point to point to little towns along your trans route = more passengers = more money :)
You could do one train "express" after building these slow point to point each district.
Colonel! I noticed during this video that the time adjusts based on the country you're looking at. It says under the seconds what offset from UTC you're on.
Can't wait for tomorrow to get the game! I think I will start with New York and the North Eastern corridor. I wonder if you can use existing right of way to minimize costs. I guess I'll find out tomorrow.
the colonel learns about network effects, yummy
start with cheaper trains and then upgrade them to the faster ones, once you connect Mexico City with the current train line that line will make upwards of 20mill a day easy with the faster trains
0:23 thought I’d just woken from a coma for a minute there
Loving it Colonel. Keep the eps going!
great work keep it goin i hope u get the tracks from top to bottom
Tehuacan to Puebla by road on Google Maps is 133kms. So your 113kms is not halved because of the double tracking, it remains 113kms in total.
Tehuacan having an h makes no sense?
Te-hoo-a-can
te-wah-cahn in fact
can you replace the trams with heavy rail or do you have to remove all the tracks? (It's too small to see on my phone)
I wonder if a modder could turn the map into a satellite view?
Or just export the data to Google Earth :-)
Have you ever played Command: Modern Operations? Look it up. Uses satellite view on a "game" set across the world.
@@petrhajduk9955That would be pointless, can't play the game on Google Earth.
@@excitableboy7031 Cool, not my type of game. Hopefully, someone will make it.
It's a bit of a bummer that height means absolutely nothing, to be honest. It might make things simpler to build, but it's unrealistic, plus it limits the complexity of the network you can build (no overpasses between different level of tracks, for example)
Totally agree
Good gameplay and enlightenment by the Colonel but still on the fence though if I'll be buying it. If I do, might have to go with unlimited money but try to still maintain realistic expectations (i.e. not build coast-to-coast or transcontinental routes in the first 5 minutes). Having it tick through the days like that seems a bit slow.
Watch the other streamers, unlimited cash is the way to go.
You need to connect your city center to the IC train network dude
When pronouncing places with Hs in them, the H is silent, like Hola sounds like OLA
Ya, minimal trams to deliver passengers to your main lines.
Notification Squad, ASSEMBLE!
'Reporting for duty sir!'
Can't sleep squad reporting in!
Loving it!
It does look like the ideal speed of the line ensures that the train doesn't go any faster, even though it could. Can anyone confirm this?
I thought the same thing but it didn't hold up in testing. Ideal line speed only affects the timing estimates.
Los Angeles would be a good ending point, no?
Yes trains are strated to run
This is starting to get very technical and if i half understand any of what colonel failure is babbling about i could proberly get a job with northen rail as a director
Head up to Oregon, along the coast, to Tillamook.
why?
There's an H in there that doesn't make any sense, lol, pronounce Sḵwx̱wú7mesh. Yes there is a 7 in the middle of that name.
Yay, more of this!
People are paying 950 for a 50 Kilometer trip @200 Kilometer per hour? Just how bad is a taxi trip?
Oh it all looked so good up until the point that it didn't. I wonder if either they'll fix the problem with spacing on the tram lines like was happening here or if it was simply that there were too many trams running on it. These and other questions will keep me awake for days, I'm sure.
You set up a timetable with intervals. Easy.
Man, it's PRE-Alpha, even not Early-Access yet! Really should get, what Early Access is meant to be, although it's highly self explaining anyway.
@@NipapornP Oh yeah, I understand that. I was just wondering if it was the fault of the game or the Colonel just being over zealous with the number of trams on the line.
@@natgrant1364 Everything's fine. Just let us slow down the hype and accompany the devs in developing this promising game. ;)
BTW: There are some known bugs with the "travel time happiness" of the PAX. The dev is working on it already.
Keep recording CF, please!!
You sound pissed off
If only passenger rail really made money in the real world. Transportation in almost every country except for Japan is highly subsidized by the government since they don't make money. Now Japan's rail system will some day make money if they stop spending about 5 billion on new high speed rail routes. Doesn't mean I don't like trains I like them better than flying.
A lot of passenger trains make money in the real world. Amtrak's North East Regional makes a lot of money. Hong Kong's government is funded mainly by it's rail system. UK intercity routes normally make a decent amount.
Lots of lines don't make money, but many lines do
@@jamesbedford7327if governments didn’t subsidize rail passenger trains non would make money especially AmTrak
Why does rail have to turn a profit but not roads?
Rail routes don’t make money on smaller routes. If you have a route between Paris and Lyon for example it will make money more often than not. But if you have a route between Bath and Sherborne, it will become a social good and require subsidies in order to continue running, even though it provides great benefits for the inhabitants of the towns.
@@danstanciu9549 which means the unprofitable route drags down the profitable route hence a deficit train system. This has been my gripe for ever bus companies take all the juicy profits routes and then the public service buses don’t make money forcing cities to fund a bus service that everybody complains about because it is a drain and citizens have to pay high taxes to fund a failing public transport system. I think that cities should be allowed to run the money making routes to compensate for the underperforming routes.
Is this a Canadian game? Metric + Dollars? Seems like a Canadian thing to me.
It's an "everywhere outside the US/UK" thing. We're the only ones backward enough to still use British Imperial.
@@colonelfailure But they don't use dollars in the EU or China or Russia or Egypt or... so, even if they use metric, why is this in dollars and not some fake currency like simoleans? What I'd really like to know is why it doesn't have the option to choose your currency and measurement preferences. Oh well. Let's just confuse all the Americans... it's not like they buy games or anything. LOL
Still 6 hours till it come out 😡
Hadoken!
107,000 m is not 107 km. oh my
but...
no...
its not the point to buy a high speed train and force its avg speed down to 190 :c
on this track you can try running an avg at 280-300
thats just a time estimate. he's putting it down so he makes the time to avoid any refunds.
however, as i undertsand it, the train will still go its top speed throughout
You should call it the “Pan-American Railroad.”
should stop and spend more time on dyson sphere
Well imo dyson is boring af
@@michaelvey0239 while I personally wouldn't say it is boring, I love satisfactory but I don't think dyson sphere is for me
