Great tutorial. I've made a few different coil lanyards with two different dowel sizes using paracord with a tracer. I found that if you don't crimp the ends just right it is challenging to get the 3/16th shrink tubing completely over the paracord ends. I'm using these as gear lanyards as well as connecting the coils to a buckle (like a dive lanyard) thst has nylon webbing on one end (to loop around a belt) and the other end connects to a split ring to hold keys.
Love the tutorial. Thanks so much, I did modify it slightly. I used a metal rod and placed it in my cordless drill to create the coil. Wrapped the coil on an 8" cord in about 5 seconds.
Hi Ace King. That's a great idea--it would look awesome and be a nice clean finish. If I understand what you're saying you will need to keep in mind when you loop the cord on itself you will need to stitch it together with strong thread or something, because I wouldn't trust the heat shrink tubing alone to be strong enough to hold it under stress. Seems like I've seen that loop idea somewhere, but I never researched how they did it. I hope it turns out awesome. Thanks for commenting.
I’m making mine tomorrow & they’re to be fishing rod leashes & paddle leashes while kayaking. I’m also going to leash anything else that’s not bolted down !! Hmm - does this have a toddler application if used with a harness ? No, no - surely not! Great video, a pleasure to watch and learn! Thank you & your videography was fine.
Wow, exactly what I was looking for! I was looking for something to secure my Zebralight SC600 to my belt loop (my last plastic coiled tether broke). This looks like something I would enjoy doing and let me customize it at the same time. Thanks for taking the time to make as post this video. Happy trails.
Thank you for explaining the boil time and great idea for the electrical lugs and using paracord (it’ll help with damage from the elements) Can’t wait to make a few, I’ll be using them for kayak fishing by the way.
Nice job. I discovered this last year and made a bunch for christmas presents. I do mine a little different. I put the terminals on before coiling and boiling, then I secure them to the wooden dowel with small screws through the terminals. I also use wooden spoons for my dowels, gives a tighter coil. I mainly use mine as a tacticool wallet chain. It stretches when you want your wallet, but coils up and out of the way when you dont. Plus no noise compared to a wallet chain. I like the flip inside out trick. If you melt the cord/line combo into a little blob before putting the terminals on, and secure the terminals well, these will hold around 50 lbs before failure. Could be used for a pistol lanyard. Anyway, nice work.
Awesome idea. Those look great. Really want to try this, though I may need my husband's hand strength to do the wrapping. lol. Would really like to see more paracord projects you have in your repertoire. Thanks for the info.
Have been planning on making some lanyards for my kayak. was gonna use weed trimmer line....but, love the ideal of putting it inside paracord. Will definitely be making them with paracord. thanks for the vid, and awesome lanyards.
So glad you liked the idea. Just make sure the ends are really solid if your using them for anything valuable. One viewer said he used some epoxy on the connectors at the end just to be safe. I thought that was a good idea. Anyway, best of luck!
Thx MrFdxdoeboy, you've got a good eye. Yup, its a G-Shock, model G-7800. I absolutely love it and I've never seen anyone else with one. Got mine from ebay.
Hi Suzanne, for my daughters keychain I started with a lanyard knot and the rest was a round box knot -- you can find tutorials on youtube. Thanks for watching!
I had some materials lying around and figured what the heck. Piece of 1/2" alu tube on hand. After removing I thought "this sucks" until I figured out the coiling it back on itself. So cool. Loads of color choices in paracord so I will be doing more but a smaller diameter tube
Videos were very well done. Cool project. Trying to think of something "outside of the box" to use it for. Something involving the animals. Thanks for the videos.
If you don't mind me asking.. What kind of lighter was that you were using (orange one)? Thanks! Great and innovative idea!! Love it! Definitely gonna Make some!
Enjoyed the video(s). Made mine the same way on a 3/4" dowel. When turning the coil back on itself to make it "tighter", I did not get the same result as you. Any thoughts on what went wrong?
Good job. I already have this project lined up to do while it's too cold for kayaking. Paddle leash and a couple of rod leashes like this and I should be set. When kayaking, Leash it or lose it.
They turned out great!! Everyone of them set just right. I started out with a short one to secure my GPS to my PFD and a good test run. It turned out so well that I went whole hog and made several more that are long enough for my saltwater rods and paddles. Thanks again.
Whoa, you saw this video quick--it just finished uploading. Part one is still uploading :). You can tell just a little of the color bled into the water during the boiling process, and just a little of the yellow bled on to the paper towel. However, looking at the coils you cant' really tell they lost any color at all. Thanks for watching!
Very cool brotha , I am so going to do this , this weekend , so many uses and I have a ton of cord , thank you so much for making and sharing this video , great work bro . 😁
When I wrapped my coils then put in hot water the coil comes loose. Any idea of why that could be feels like I have it as tight as I can get it. Thanks. Great videos.
Sorry tlj882000, not sure what is happening. Once you've got the coil wrapped tightly are you taping it really securely on both ends? The taped ends should keep it from loosening. That's never happened to me. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Shawn Callahan I taped the beginning with electrical tape. The tape has to be tightly wrapped. Then I keep extreme tension on the rod as I wrap the rod with the paracord. It's a workout for the hands for sure. I hope that helps.
one of the things i have done with the clamps is take a round dremel bit and set the speed on high and then close the clamp around the 2 faces.this will give you a concaved face and it will not slip off the dowel.before you start,it looks flat, when you are done it looks like this " ( "
Is there some secret here? Did everything like you did but when I pull my wraps off the dowel it's super lose and floppy. Tried to reverse coils and made it so much worse it's not usable...
Sorry for the poor results. I've had a couple coils not turn out as nice as I'd like. I know it is very important to wrap the coils VERY tight and close together. If your hands don't ache afterwards then you probably didn't wrap tight enough. Thats the only advice I can think of--also make sure they boil long enough and freeze long enough too.
and he means REALLY REALLY tight! I just put in frying pan and after 20 seconds it unsprung! It did this in a fraction of a second and you can guess how much hot water came out the pan and went everywhere!!! much to the wife`s disgust! just rewound with jubilee clip on each end!

Immediately knew that was the route i was taking when I saw him hand turning.

One of the best tutorial videos I have seen in a long time.
+Dale Thibodeaux Those are incredibly nice words, I appreciate it. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Awesome I like the paracord touch you added instead of leaving just the weed line great vid I hope to try this but not sure I have the patience lol
Awesome project! Thanks for taking the time to share. Will be making some of these for rod and paddle leashes for my kayak.
Great idea I'm going to try this for sure. Side note what type of watch is that looks like gshock wondering what model thx alot keep the vids coming.
Thx MrFdxdoeboy, you've got a good eye. Yup, its a G-Shock, model G-7800. I absolutely love it and I've never seen anyone else with one. Got mine from ebay.

Thanks for the video! This is exactly the information I was needing to make a custom sized leash for my dive knife.

thats preety cool man thank you !!
btw the color of the paracord dosent get dull?
Enjoyed the video(s). Made mine the same way on a 3/4" dowel. When turning the coil back on itself to make it "tighter", I did not get the same result as you. Any thoughts on what went wrong?
Thaks for the kind words. I do have some more I'd like to do. Stay tuned...
Thanks for the response. I did a second one n it did the same plus the tape slid up. Was using electrical tape may try duct tape next.
Good job. I already have this project lined up to do while it's too cold for kayaking. Paddle leash and a couple of rod leashes like this and I should be set. When kayaking, Leash it or lose it.
That's a perfect application for these. Good luck--thanks for watching!
I've got them chilling in ice water now. Thanks again.
+Matt Davis So did they turn out okay?
They turned out great!! Everyone of them set just right. I started out with a short one to secure my GPS to my PFD and a good test run. It turned out so well that I went whole hog and made several more that are long enough for my saltwater rods and paddles. Thanks again.
it worked! Used thick 3mm strimmer line, simmered for 18 mins on camping stove as banned from kitchen, did ends up with jubilee clip!
Glad it turned out well Ed. Thanks for watching and commenting.
wow very nice. I'm heading to lowes in the morning. Good work and creativity
Thanks. Good luck with yours!
Thanks. I didn't wanna pay the price tuff teather is chargin. Plus there always sold out so I'm gonna make my own now 😅
Great video!!! Running out to get my supplies and try it!!!
Awesome project! Thanks for taking the time to share

Great idea. How much paracord do you usually use for your coils?
Very cool brotha , I am so going to do this , this weekend , so many uses and I have a ton of cord , thank you so much for making and sharing this video , great work bro . 😁
Thanks Chris. It's a fun project for sure. Glad you liked the video. Take care bro!
Really nice, I wonder what materials work best for this, as I don't live in america ;)
great vid just made my lanyard for my kayak paddle today worked out great
Awesome. Glad it turned out. Thx for watching.
Can I use this method to coil my music jack wires?
great video. will be making several of these for my fly fishing box
Does the plastic melt inside the cord shell or does it remain hard?
Jason Cutsforth it doesn’t melt really. Boiling just makes it softer and easier to coil, then it hardens back to normal when it cools off.
TheGadgetNut 👍
Awesome Tutorial. Thanks. Would never have thought of doing that but will definitely try it now!
Thanks. It's a great project--I hope yours turns out well. Thx for watching.
I use an old frying pan with a little weight on top keep them down.?
When I wrapped my coils then put in hot water the coil comes loose. Any idea of why that could be feels like I have it as tight as I can get it. Thanks. Great videos.

have you tried using a heat gun instead of boiling.
yes im fast haha you should do more videos i like the way you make them
you defenitly deserve more subs
Great videos (part 1 & 2)). I'm gonna try this as soon as I get a free moment.
thanks for this, i've saved it, and i shared it in my FB paracord group, someone was asking how to do this
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching. I'll have to check out your FB group. Take care!
where is a link to the group? I'm looking for things to do with paracod
Who trouble with the end eyelets pulling off?
when done recoil it back the other way tighter spring .?
i think this is really cool. i am right now making one. i just love it. thank you.
I'm glad you like it. Thanks for watching. I hope yours turned out good!
Thank you that help me so much I used it for backpacking to hold my duckback
Excellent video! Congrats!
How did you wrap it, and get it to stay?
Shawn Callahan I taped the beginning with electrical tape. The tape has to be tightly wrapped. Then I keep extreme tension on the rod as I wrap the rod with the paracord. It's a workout for the hands for sure. I hope that helps.
That is pretty badass. Thanks man!!
Thanks for sharing. I shall try this soon.

Would u sell them
At Last. I can make my own. Thanks brother, really appreciate these videos. Awesome job :D

TheGadgetNut Thanks for the tip, my hands ache after 10 wraps and I got pretty tuff hands... Guess I'll try it even tighter.
Thanks bud it really helped me out!!!!
I'm an electrician, a construction worker. That connection will not hold if your life depends on it.. Fined another way. Even if its not as pretty.
that crimp won't hold a deli ticket, let a lone some pliers or a fishing rod
I have a problem with reversing. It became more loosen :-(
Your vid is great, I just love youtube college.
going to try several for my pinpointer, and flashlight.
not bad I like it but the crimps should be bigger I will try and see how it go's
Thank you! Well presented.
Great idea and video!
Thanks--have fun!
Excelente idea ,,,,Gracias Bro !!!!!
Most excellent. Thanks!
Great video
Thanks Gary
Submerge them with a fork, pronged side down. Will keep the coils submerged the whole time.
Thanks for posting that it is really cool
Yellow or 10-12 gauge ring terminals would probably fit better.
Great video! Thank you!
Very good idea! Thanks for this.
great video
i still cant reverse it...
Simple and clever, great job, thank you. :-)
nice demonstration! thumbing up
Awesome idea thank you very much
