    Yes it’s that time of the week where I’m reduced to being a small child again in bed listening to my bedtime story provided by none other than Fact Feast. I’m so glad that I wasn’t living in the Victorian era, I really don’t know how or if I would’ve survived. The class system was and still is truly unequal and diabolical!

      I really struggle with this channel once it does the ‘quoting of people’
      It’s a me thing and not them though!
      I don’t know why as it’s fascinating and informative but I prefer the informative than the going between the people quoting stuff. I’ve adhd so think it’s that.
      You are so right though, these sort of channels whilst you are chilling is amazing. I always come back here even though sometimes I struggle with it as I do love the content and want to enjoy it and hence me saying it’s me not the channel!

    As a great fan of Dickens I found this fascinating ! It puts a real face on some of the characters and incidents in his stories and brings them into focus. Silas Wegg, in "Our Mutual Friend", though not a sweeper, has a little stall outside a "great house" and runs errands etc. for the residents of his small demesne, treating them with deferential affection as if he were an old retainer.
    I get the same feeling from Billy's descriptions of his patrons, although Billy was clearly of a superior moral character than rapacious old Mr Wegg !
    Thank you for this, I am now going to re-read "Bleak House" !😊

      Hey - maybe you could possibly make a video about the tradition of Victorian ghost stories? They especially told them at Christmas

    How are you doing sir. Thank you for your wonderful cultural documentary channel. I learn new information and new vocabularies every time you are posting. Sweeping definition is using broom to remove loose dirt from floor while cleaning up is making things orderly. Since 1990s sweeper position has fade away. Crossing sweepers we’re common in streets of English cities in 18 and 19 th centuries. They were making young poor boys who would sweep path a head of wealthy lady who wanted to cross street without soling her long dress . It’s unhygienic work causes accidents , injuries, wounds , animal bites. Good luck to you your dearest ones . Thank you for giving us chance to read learn new information improve our English as none native speakers.

    As always, an excellent and informative video. I knew nothing of crossing sweepers. Toshers, mudlarks, pure finders, but not crossing sweepers. I always enjoy the experience of listening to your readings of the actual historical accounts. It brings Victorian London to life. It would also be good learn about the sources used for the illustrations and identify the locations at, for example, 3:00, 5:40 and 9:56. Where in London are theses places? I'd like to see how they look now.

      @FactFeast  Рік тому

      Thank you. It’s great that you found this story of interest. Locations you mention: 1. Southwark, 2. Unknown, 3. Bank of England. Wikipedia or Wellcome Collection have sweeper illustrations.

    I sometimes wonder how I'd have fared if I were born earlier in history. I... Tend to assume I wouldn't have lived as long as I have. If I were "lucky" enough to get a spot doing the sweeping like this, I think this probably would have been about my speed.
    I actually even have a little experience with something a bit like this, in the modern day. Some grocery stores employ dedicated grocery baggers, some add that to the duties of the cashier, some the customer is expected to bag their own groceries. But the US Military likes to do things their own way -- I was a bagger at a Commissary (military grocery store), technically self employed for taxes, because I had no salary whatsoever -- only tips from the customers. Also, we took the groceries on a special cart from the end of the checkout to the customer's car, and loaded it in. We also weren't allowed to bring up the fact that we only work for tips, or in any way show disappointment even if a $300ish order chose not to tip anything.
    So, yeah, with my health conditions I was only able to work a few hours a day, a few days a week... So I feel a kinship with this person, across the centuries. Usually I'd get $2-3 for a cart of groceries, rarely someone would give me a 10 or 20 (usually around Christmas).
    Anyway. I don't think I'd have lasted long. The type of job has changed, but the existence of the folks who do the jobs hasn't. It's a shame we don't treat folks better.

      Yes, he was lucky (relative to fellow crossing sweepers) that he was able to sweep a crossing in the vicinity of some of London’s grandest houses and wealthiest residents.
