Hold on your horses for SteamDeck 2 for more CPU, Ram and stuff. This is an amazing quality of life upgrade IMO.
So not only they followed the naming conventions of Nintendo with the Switch, but it also basically has the same type of differences that the Switch OLED has with the regular one: not making it more powerful, but addressing design flaws.

For an incremental update, they picked one of the best things to change. A bit of a shame it probably isn’t a valve-endorsed standalone upgrade for the existing Steam Decks in the wild, but the option and seamless integration with the existing hardware and software is a good start.
I think there are 3rd party OLED screens for the steam deck that you can probably DIY.

@@wassilia1234nope, OLED is .4" bigger and is apparently easier to replace so likely uses a completely different method to connect to the main board
You can already take parts outs without much trouble with your regular steam deck, they will probably release kits for this in the future.
They really did arrange Steam Decks on a circular frame and time the animation. For something that do computer animation and simulation, this is truly physical effort

I'd love to see a Steam Controller based off of the controls of the Steam Deck. Having both analog sticks, more grip buttons AND 2 trackpads would be a very nice upgrade. I'm not sure if they could cram all of that onto a controller and still have room for a D-Pad without making it the size of the Xbox Duke. I can dream though.
I'm in the minority but I love the Duke's size, it's so comfortable. So I wouldn't mind something its size lmao
it'd be huge and expensive but so worth to have such incredible control customization for a desktop PC gaming experience. Maybe more expensive than a DualSense but less than an Xbox Elite 2 Core.
I looked into ways to get your desktop's Steam installation to recognize the Deck itself as a controller, it's possible but seems complicated.

The closest thing we have to that is the Dualsense edge. I personally wouldn’t mind if they just chopped the middle off of the SteamDeck and glued the two controller sections together.
*you can use steam deck as a controller for another PC* . The easy beginner-friendly way is with *remote play* , which just works. There are countless other ways to do it for advanced users.
There's been quite a few handheld PC's since the OG deck, but the deck is literally the only one that has a control layout that makes sense (not just blindly copying the switch, which makes playing anything that requires you to use the right analogue stick comfortably more or less impossible), and the OS gives you that console like experience that handhelds need. Definitely upgrading when this is available in my region!
The OG SteamDeck is still the best performance per watt handheld pc. The new model is supposed to be even better.

The "rumble" and screen suck, as does the battery life for anything beyond 2D indie games and 10 year old 3D games. The sticks are not hall effect, the WiFi constantly loses connection, and ....
OH, the whole thing runs on Linux, meaning tons of games from Fortnite to Fall Guys are completely unplayable.
Also, it can't download game updates while in sleep, You always have to stare at downloads and installations for 5-15 minutes every time you just want to pick up and play.

I consider the Deck to be a breakthrough, others have already started copying and releasing, but I am sure it is the Deck that will leave a mark on history. Powerful, compact and beautiful! You can even play old games in peace, since not everything is available on consoles. It's just a masterpiece! I want them to move forward!
The Steamdesk is such an amazing product, I never thought as a child we'd be able to play desktop PC games on a handheld. A great blend of Open-Source ingiunity.
Just buy a desktop, you don't leave your house anyway and this steam d**k only gets 20 fps so it's useless

I have to say, The Steam deck and support it has is top notch. I had an aisle with mine where it started having an issue with one of the analog sticks. All I had to do was send it in to valve and they fixed it free of charge

The first second gave me a strong sense of nostalgia for the "The Dark Knight" film.
Major improvements, while keeping the promise to keep a single performance tier, to incentivize game optimization efforts. Great job!
The only things I can think of for further improvements are more durable hall effect joysticks and improved L1/R1 bumpers.
They're not nearly as bad as the Steam Controller was, but they're still too clicky and they're not very robust.
Those are my personal pain points after extended use.

Steam themselves even mentioned in an interview that this is more of a 1.5 version as opposed to a V2 deck. The original screen is actual ass so the OLED alone (while also being larger) is factually an upgrade. The Nintendo switch was a sick upgrade when they went OLED also. It's the gold standard. Plus the price is essentially the same + $50, with additional storage too. It's nothing.

This has to be one of the best Console reveal trailers. I love how the logo at the end is on the actual display so you can SEE its OLED. And how they used the Steam deck displays for lighting and show the HDR. Its sooo GOOD! I love this!
Agreed, a lot of people even outside the tech industry knows that OLED generally means a better display, even if they can't say exactly what it does. But I've not seen a trailer so effectively show what OLED screens mean. The logo at the end really impressed me, being on the screen in a pitch-black room

Yeah, it's so clever to use the Steam Deck itself to create the trailer, as it shows off that:
- the HDR can be bright enough to light the set
- OLED can produce perfect blacks, so when they all switch off for the logo at the end, it looks perfect... but we're actually looking at the Steam Deck OLED screen itself (lights kick on afterwards to confirm and remind us of this). Like, that's just how good OLED screens are.
- the cacophony of sound from all the Decks, because this new version does also have better sound (there's now a dedicated DSP for the audio). Zooms out to the wide view to emphasise this point and the fact that the Decks are not perfectly synchronised means the sound phases and stuff too, so we know the audio is actually coming from the real world and from the Decks.

A lot of the added performance stems from the new screen, but I believe it'll still fit.
@@Riptor_WLnah, the steamdeck goes hard on self-repair and being able to service it yourself. ifixit has valve-endorsed guides for how to replace many of the critical components. not unreasonable to hope that we'll be able to replace older batteries with this new one

Just got a Lenovo Legion Go and one thing i'll say is Valve did a superb job on the Gyro and its settings on the SteamDeck. The Legion Go doesn't hold a candle with its Gyro. I still love the SteamDeck.

My phone with 5,000mAh have cpu that eat 8 tdp and hard games with high settings runs only for 3-4 hours.
It's portable device, why you think Nintendo Switch games have low graphics and mostly 30fps lock? Cause they have to run for 4-8 hours from one charge.

The steam deck is hands down the best handheld I have owned. So many good features, then add oled to it. For me, while not perfect it's amazing way I can take my game library with me when I travel or if I just want to sit in bed and play. I am looking forward to seeing more.

It's not available in my country yet sadly. But boy they seem to have done a good job on the new specs. A genuine improvement, I cannot wait to see some hands on comparisons Digital Foundry do your magic. This feels like Valve are listening to their customers and making the great better. I wish Nintendo would follow their example. I can't wait to see the switch 2.
According to the steam store it has a bigger battery (50Whr vs 40Whr), a bigger screen (7.4" vs 7". Same resolution but 90Hz), support for Wifi 6E and a new APU (CPU-GPU combo). No details about the new APU other than that it is 6nm in contrast to the old 7nm APU.
EDIT: There are details about the new APU. Core count and frequency are the same. Probably just more power efficient. Not faster. RAM is slightly faster at 6400 MT/s vs 5500 MT/s
LCD 64GB and 512GB are being phased out, leaving LCD 256GB, OLED 512GB and OLED 1TB as the new lineup.

yea... i missed the summer sale. decided to just get it since they said they wont release anything new until 2025. now the 516gb unit i got 2 weeks ago is worth more than half the price since refurbished are finally in stock now. why would they take it off the summer sale just to drop a better steam deck in ever way with 2x the storage at the same price as the 512gb lcd. sick to my stomach i feel like i got scammed

Welcome to the club of beta testers at their own expense. Gaben had to somehow sell his crap for $399 with shitty EMMC memory off the shelves in order to now release a REAL release version of the console for $50 cheaper and with 4 times the memory capacity in low-end version, almost 1/3 larger battery and a normal screen. We expected that our hardware would be relevant for at least more than 1.5 years? Too bad, we got screwed. Now I won't be surprised at release of some Deck 2 next summer after Valve squeeze $ out of the next batch of gullible morons.

Awesome! I am loving my current Steam Deck. It has allowed to actually me to play many of the games I already own because I can play them on the go and this new OLED screen looks amazing! Valve by far has to be the most consumer friendly company out there in the portable gaming space. Keep up the great work!

My Steam Deck 1TB OLED arrived today, and I am blown away! The screen is just beautiful, and it plays very smoothly! The only (tiny) downside I have noticed is that if I shake the console, the XYAB buttons all rattle! No biggie, it's a stunning bit of kit!
now all we need is the Steam Deck Lite and we finally have a true rival to the Switch

this revision is sooo goood. i'm not one to jump on revisions, as they are usually so minor that if you have the original there is literally no point in getting the new one. but here, hell it's not a minor change at all. there are several good changes, when we add them into one, this revision is HUGE.
Better screen - OLED so great colors, HDR, 90 Hz, it's bigger with smaller bezels.
Bigger battery, more efficient APU so much better battery life.
Better thermals and fan so it's quieter.
Better ram which will improve performance with like 3-5% but will also make games more stable with less stutter.
Better wifi and bluetooth
the prices are as before, so they are actually cheaper - 512gb is now the middle variant for $549/569 euro
and there are even more improvements that are more minor, but they add up to the great value of this device.
I proffered the steam deck over the competitors anyway, the only thing I kind of didn't like is the worse screen compared to other handhelds, but i was content with it. now there is just no competition for me.

Looks awesome! Im really glad they stuck with 800p. It's a great resolution for handheld gaming and hardly a tradeoff considering the power draw benefits. The only problem is I have no excuse to upgrade from my current steam deck!
The battery life here might be the only actual thing to consider here.

@@bradhaines3142 Actually since this is 16:10 aspect ratio were talking about here and not 16:9 which would be 1080p, it would have to be 1920 x 1200 or 1200p to scale from 1280 x 800 resolution correctly (and games can add a border top and bottom to switch to 16:9 in games). But I agree that Valve needs to up the resolution on the Steam Deck 2 and hopefully will stay there for many years to come. But at some point we need to get away from 800p or 720p resolution in the future.

Here's hoping that Steam will make an option to just upgrade your existing Deck with new parts as everything is already modular and user upgradable/replacable. I just recently bought a Steam Deck with 512 GB NVMe, and then Valve announced a new revision with very good improvements😅
However, although I did not wait for the new revision, I am still very glad that you are not giving up the development of your device. Thank you very much, Valve, for giving the world the Steam Deck!❤
