  • Here is a video of me testing out my Tram 1180 ham radio antenna. It is for the dual band 2m 70cm bands. Purchased this to see if my SWR and output power is better than my larsen 2/70 antenna that was trimmed and tuned for 70cm.
    The results were very positive with very low/near perfect 1.00 vswr on the 2m band. 70cm was consistent with 1.02-1.04 vswrs as well. 2m power as 39-43 watts and 45-51 watts on 70cm.
    I purchased the tram antenna of EBAY for $24 which was a few bucks cheaper than amazon.
    Swr and power was calculated by the SUREcom sw-102 which i purchased for $50 off amazon.
    All testing was through the Yaesu FTM-400xdr dual band radio. The video only shows a portion of my testing and results were consistent throughout both bands.

    I've heard tons of grumbles about the SWR meter... i also bought one and comparing agains my BIRD 43, I still find myself going to the surecom... easy to use and for me PLENTY accurate , especially for mobile radio use. great video!

    Great video, thank you for sharing. Just a point on the Surecom...... a friend bought one very recently and measured it up against a Rigexpert analyzer, it was very very close across the tested frequencies and I am now ordering one. I always cringe at those who are very quick to step on others who don't pay top dollar for a similar piece of equipment just because of its branding. Good luck and thanks again.

    I have 3 Tram 1180s. @ in the roof of my car.Using a MFJ269c ,one in the middle of the roof is 1.5 -1 on the edges of the two meter band (1.1-1 at 146) while in 1-1 at 435mhz and 2-1 at 450mhz. while the other is the oposite, good across 70 cm , is 10 inches back from the windsheild. The 3rd one is on a mag mount on a a/c window unit and it less then 1.5- across both bands. Works great on 70 cm. I am spoiled with a Hustler CG144 on two meters.

    You would probably have higher power output with the vehicle running. Your probably around 12.3-12.5 volts. It will be about 13.8v while running. I know some yaesu are very sensitive about voltage. My ft-991 was suppose to put out 100 on ssb and if the vehicle wasn’t running it would only do 50-60w. Just a thought. W4FFX

    I'm saving for that radio as we speak. I've also looked into that Tram as an antenna. Great video BTW.

    That Tram has a 6db gain. At 40 watts that's like having 160 watts effective output. Does the Larsen have the same gain?

    I had an old Larson dual band, and it broke. I bought the 1180 but not been installed yet.

      I want to do a side by side comparison before I make a judgement. If it is accurate, I love it's simplicity and easy to read interface.

    Can you (or anyone) please tell me what kind of adapter I need to connect a regular PL259 connector to the Surecom SW-102?

      I wishe they brought that base unit out I think it was going to be the Surecom SW101 they were neat looking but when I asked them they never hit the market. Im just going to build my in to flat wood with the face on the out side side by sideto hide the cable in my radio hutch.

    It’s probably 50 wants peak not constantly 50wants

    • @rmccombs66
      @rmccombs66 3 роки тому

      There is no "peak" with FM. He's not getting 50 watts out because without the engine running he's not getting enough voltage. He needs about 13.8 volts to get full power out. FM continuously has the same power it doesn't vary like AM or SSB.
