Salve Paolo Marcelli. Ti ringrazio.

I came here looking for a solution to the my print head problem on this exact printer. I've ordered my new print head and will have a go at this replacement. I have to say it looks daunting - but it was this or send the printer to the dump. I just feels so wasteful to be throwing technology away when it stops working properly and repairing outside is so expensive. I am not an electrician or a computer person - but I am going to give a go - will post how it turns out. I think I've spent more on replacing the cartridges because of this problem than it cost to buy the printer back in 2011. Just invested another £45 for more new cartridges and £35 for a new print head. I'm thinking I have now gone past the point of it being cost effective to repair - but this will be my last attempt to get it working properly - I guess what I learn from the experience will be valuable too. The A3 scanner has been the reason why I have held on to it, but it's so bulky, it doesn't make sense not to use the printer as well.
Thank you for the step by step video it was most helpful. I have the MFC-6490CW and the strut is different but I worked out how to remove it. The other difference was impossible to change and that was the battery pack as it would not pass through the opening in the top panel so I had to unplug it. After I took the panel off I replugged it while I did the print head change. I had to do that again on reassembly. Now the screen is not coming on and no function works. Is this fixable?
Thanks for your video, very well explained ! I had the really bad idea to buy a cleaning kit last week because I didn't use this printer for about 10 years and it couldn't print black color anymore.. Anyway the cleaning didn't work very well (as expected) but I was able to print few pages and suddenly when I was trying to print a photo, the printer took ages and gave me a first error 44, so I restarted the printer and got error 48. I tried to disassemble the printer and check to printhead, it was full of ink, due to the cleaning. I did a good cleaning remove all the ink I could and reassemble the printer.. but I still have this error 48. Do you think the printhead is dead ? I found a replacement one on Aliexpress but I'd like to have your opinion first. Thanks again for your work mate ! Have a good one, greeting from France !

I have this printer and have changed the head before but later find out it is the printhead cleaning cap seal that is gone not the printhead. It is not possible to buy just the ink cap. Now when I print I have to pump some air in the ink cartridge air hole to force some ink into the head. Annoying but it keep it working.
Great instructions but I am in kind of a trouble, I’ve recently replaced my dcp-j752dw printhead, and it prints fine, however after few prints it displays error 44, after checking the service manual I discovered that it needs the new print head property code, the new print head didn’t come with property code only head code, and the maintenance shop, denies the need for a code, is there a way to generate the code from the print head label which have the head code? Any info regarding this problem is of great appreciation. Thanks
Hi :) I don't know what service manual you have, but as I see (and remember from past experiences) error 44 is "The head driver IC detected an abnormal temperature during operation or stand-by" so a faulty printhead!
@@PaoloMarcelli thanks for the replay, the manual provides a list of the things that appeared to be the cause starting from air in the head, property code of replacement head, head cable, or head itself or even the mainboard, but most likely according to the presentation of printing normally then stopping after a while is a code mismatch, I guess I’ll try to have a refund for the head.
Hi! Thanks for a very useful video! Where do you buy the replacement heads? I Have a MFC-5890CN Are the printer head the same for all versions (C, CN, CW)?
The heads can be purchased on eBay or AliExpress I think, the problem is that most of the times you buy refurbished ones, and they can have a few nozzles missing, sometimes they restore and sometimes not, oem new replacements are generally not available to the end consumer. The heads are the same for all the MFC-5890 series.
Hi Marcelli, Excellent breakdown for the machine. I initially had leaking ink from around the purge motor which turned out to be a pipe had come adrift. After cleaning and reassemble I now get 5 beeps repeated twice on post boot and only a blue screen, it does this twice then drops to only the fax button lit up. Any pointers as I cannot find any information on the 5 beeps.
Found this if anybody's interested. www.brother-usa.com/-/media/brother/product-catalog-media/documents/2020/08/17/13/01/sm_mfc_5890cn_5895cw_en_5680.pdf
I have a question. I have a Brother MFC-J5520DW and I tried cleaning the nozzles by plugging a tube onto the ink intake port, except I used warm water. My Cyan was the one that was the most clogged and when I pressed the syringe not much was happening, only a tiny bit of Cyan was coming out onto the paper towel, then all of the sudden all the water from the syringe started squirting out of the Yellow intake port while it was plugged into the Cyan port. I played with it a little bit then water started coming out of the Magenta and Black ports... Is that normal, or did I brake something by giving it more pressure?
Hi! Unfortunately that's the best way to destroy the ink system of a Brother printer. I know! it's not your fault, you've probably seen videos or someone suggested you to do it, and that's unfortunate. To fix the problem you'd have to replace or fix the ink delivery system, or "ink refill assy" as brother calls it, it's the component where you insert cartridges with the tubings and everything else that connect to the printhead. To be fair it's not that Brother is evil, it's a practice that cannot be done to clean the head on printers with stationary cartridges, that method only works with Epson printers that have cartridges on top of the carriage.
The part number of the replacement is LEU387001 for the MFC-J5520DW, you can look for it online, but if you had printhead issues to begin with I don't think it's a viable option, if you want to try though there are a few things to do after replacement to refill the ink lines with fresh ink.
If you wanna buy a new printer avoid HP at all cost, I'd suggest to stay with Brother as they are the most reliable, or Epson, nothing else if you buy inkjet.
Hello Marcelli, Thank you again for the very helpful video. Do you know the part number for the print head for Brother MFC-5890CN? this is the model that you replaced the print head in your video. If you know the part number and or model number please provide that to me. What is happening now is that the black does not print and I have to clean each time several times before black color shows up. I think this has to do with the fact that I disconnected the cleaning discharge tube from the waste reservoir and placed it outside of printer in a box with tissues. I will be putting this tube back where it was once I open to change the print head. Thank you again for your time and kindness.
hi ... After watchin Jose Rodriguez live feed. Thanks to him .. Found you . I have a brother MFC-6490CW and i bought Non oem and now i'm getting a unable to int 4F , I think it might be my printer head being clogged..Tried unclogging with printerhead cleaner and tubing. But my black ink seems very clooged.
Hi! Sorry to tell you that Error 4F is the same as Canon B200 or Epson 0x9a, it means that the printhead is overheating or not behaving correctly in general, you need to replace it :/
Ciao Paolo.
Thanks for a great video! So how did it work out eventually? did you manage to get it to work perfectly? Did you have to buy a new one and get a refund? I'm going to do the same to my j6510dw (ordered a $20 head from eBay) so I hope it works... I would like to print photo quality on A3.
Hi! You need to replace the waste ink pads and then reset the waste ink counters from Service Mode, since I made that video I started working as an authorized brother technician so I cannot tell you how to reset the waste ink counters, but you could call brother and ask them if they can give you the procedure. It's very important that you don't reset the counters without replacing the waste ink pads, otherwise you'll have a pool of ink flowing on your desk from under the printer, as those pads are no longer able to accept any more waste ink, they're saturated.
I ve probably make an error reassembling, got the code error 50. I ll hav to open it again tomorow , something hasn't be done properly Ive found one screw left. anyway thank you . I ll juste take step by step photos next time .
Hi! Most of the time the heads are just burned, not only clogged, so I generally try my manual cleaning methods and if the situation doesn't change I replace them.
If head burn printer show error codes like 4f or 48. I repair 90% printhead by using ultra sonic machine 9% are those who can’t repair becoz they are burned or Showing error .But Also 1 % printhead repair showing 4f errror or 48 error. So in my case ultra sonic machine work perfectly for me.
Were can i get the replacement waste ink container please. thankyou for your help great vid helped alot. i have the same printer you were working on. gareth
Hi Gareth :) Try looking on ebay or aliexpress. At least here in Italy there's no way you can get it from official suppliers. If you find other waste ink container pads (you can look for the ones for Epson XP or Epson L series) you can cut them and adapt them inside the original brother container.
Hi Sagar :) Yes these are two separate monitors, but same model side by side, with most desktop computers with a dedicated video card you can connect more than just one screen, in my opinion having two screens is extremely helpful and useful, it makes everything easier (like watching some video while you work on something else on the other screen)
Thanks for your helpful video. But it doesn't work at my printer. I got an error code "Error Cleaning 30" in German "Fehler: reinigen 30". What have I done wrong? Please help! Thank you.
Hi! That error doesn't mean that the printhead is faulty, you didn't have to replace it :) it's most likely caused by full waste ink pads that needs to be replaced and reset the counter, I'd have to check on a service manual by the way.
@@PaoloMarcelli Hm... when replacing the printhead I also changed the old waste ink pads. Moreover, I resetted the purge counter at the end. So "Error: clean 30" must be something different.
Hahaha honestly for me it's pretty easy but I've repaired more than 500 printers since 2012, so... yeah... It's like a maths teacher telling his students something like "Oh you don't know how to do the study of functions? That's so easy!" in a certain way.
Hi! Only Brother authorized repair centers have that part. You can either ask them if they can sell one to you, remove the old absorbers from the tank and fill it with new absorbing material, or extend the tubings, drill two holes on a side of the case and drain the waste ink into an external waste ink container.
U remove old smonge and add babies diper 😅 its cheap and working perfect. Other option u can ad pipe and make external waste ink tank like epson printers
I would, but an international shipping for that would be very expensive (not considering my labor). Consider you're looking at around 25-50 EUR (one way, so x2) if you're located in EU, and more than 300 EUR + import fees (one way) if you're located outside EU. Paolo M.
First you need to replace the sponges only if they are full, or nearly full, it's not requested. I don't exactly know where to find those sponges, you can use anything that absorbs water based fluids :)
Service manual to Brother DCP eg. about head maintenance mechanism: www.moroinformatica.it/files/articles/docs/BROTH/DCP-195C_SERVICE%20MANUAL.pdf Edit: p408 (9-56): 9.4.26 Purge Operation (Function code 76) (User-accessible) Head replacement purge (See Note below.) This is a specially prepared purge for eradicating mixed color inks.
My printer (MFC-J4510) powers off itself after a soft head clean After a cleaning the printhead, my brother MFC-J4510DW, worked fine a few days and a day switched off without any error advice, beep or message. Since then I must disconnect a few seconds from the grid, and connect again. the printer starts, show the menu, moves the carriage to the park position and switches off without any error advice or messages. You can see it at the video there: ua-cam.com/video/vLU6IS5WeLg/v-deo.html If I keeep the cover ot the ink door open, The printer works to scan, but if I close them it parks the head and powers off again. Tried to Load new firmware without success, and checked that all sensors are correct in maintenance mode 32. As well checked the maintenance unit that works smooth and correctly. But the printer continues to power off after parking the print head, standing on only if door or cover are open, but unable to print, as open cover error do not allow it. Maybe a faulty PCB, but checked another used PCB and did exactly the same (two exact same fault PCB?) Maybe an incorrect value set somewhere in eeprom? Will appreciate your support and able to compensate if I can afford it. Thanks in advance and Keep healty Great videos! Ricardo

Hi! If you can't release the head manually it's easier to power on the printer and remove the power cord when the head moves on its own, there's nothing wrong by doing this :)

Big job ! Can you clean that plastic strip ? What’s the print head part number ?
Bello questo video.Molto dettagliato. Sarebbe bello averlo in lingua italiana.
2 questions...How do you reset the waste bin counter and did you get it to print perfectly? You didn't show the next test print.
have a brother printer with the same MFC 5890 cn printer CLEAN UNABLE 5A, how do I solve it?
Can you please tell me the process to change the print head for brother dcp t710w
in anticipo
Good video and explanation. But do yourself a favor and claer your desk or do this on an empty table... 🙂
I ve probably make an error reassembling, got the code error 50. I ll hav to open it again tomorow , something hasn't be done properly Ive found one screw left. anyway thank you . I ll juste take step by step photos next time .
thanks , helpful !!! awaiting a new print head
Thank you for watching :)
@@PaoloMarcelli thx brother !!! Great Jobs !
Hi! Where did you buy it from?
@@mbkn0092 from taobao.com
@@billynhk Thanks a lot!!
Bro you can use ultrasonic machine for old printhead cleaning. This machine make your old head like new you can buy on aliexpress.
Very informative; thank you for posting. What printer manufacturer do you prefer?
For the Inkjet printers Epson, over all of the others. For laser printers Brother (A4 printers).
Were can i get the replacement waste ink container please. thankyou for your help great vid helped alot. i have the same printer you were working on. gareth
Hi Gareth :) Try looking on ebay or aliexpress. At least here in Italy there's no way you can get it from official suppliers. If you find other waste ink container pads (you can look for the ones for Epson XP or Epson L series) you can cut them and adapt them inside the original brother container.
thank you very mush for this video it helps me alot especially the auto purge air i was confused about this one lol ^_^, thanks again
I'm happy you found my video useful :)
Wow 2lcd in one moniter? plz, share about your monitor. love from Nepal
Hi Sagar :) Yes these are two separate monitors, but same model side by side, with most desktop computers with a dedicated video card you can connect more than just one screen, in my opinion having two screens is extremely helpful and useful, it makes everything easier (like watching some video while you work on something else on the other screen)
@@PaoloMarcelli thank you very much.
Thx
Lol "this is where it gets kinda tricky" what do you call all the stuff prior to that easy? Looks very scary!
Hahaha honestly for me it's pretty easy but I've repaired more than 500 printers since 2012, so... yeah... It's like a maths teacher telling his students something like "Oh you don't know how to do the study of functions? That's so easy!" in a certain way.
I can't unpark printhead from zero position. No unlock mechanism here (like at 10:11 in your video). MFC-5440CN
Power on the printer, and when the printer moves out of the parking position unplug the power cord.
Hi, I need to change my waste container. Where can I find a replacement? And thanks
Other option u can ad pipe and make external waste ink tank like epson printers
can you please fix mine??? gets paper jammed and with a black long stain always gets jammed
I would, but an international shipping for that would be very expensive (not considering my labor).
Consider you're looking at around 25-50 EUR (one way, so x2) if you're located in EU, and more than 300 EUR + import fees (one way) if you're located outside EU.
Paolo M.
You just need to let the printer rest for some hours and then check the quality again.
Gonna order a printer head from aliexpress. Where do I get the sponge from ??
First you need to replace the sponges only if they are full, or nearly full, it's not requested. I don't exactly know where to find those sponges, you can use anything that absorbs water based fluids :)
mantap
Good, thanks, but difficult to see some of the detail, no zoom ins.
Thank you! Unfortunately I didn't have good recording equipment at that time :/

My printer (MFC-J4510) powers off itself after a soft head clean
After a cleaning the printhead, my brother MFC-J4510DW, worked fine a few days and a day switched off without any error advice, beep or message.
Since then I must disconnect a few seconds from the grid, and connect again. the printer starts, show the menu, moves the carriage to the park position and switches off without any error advice or messages.
You can see it at the video there:
ua-cam.com/video/vLU6IS5WeLg/v-deo.html
If I keeep the cover ot the ink door open, The printer works to scan, but if I close them it parks the head and powers off again.
Maybe a faulty PCB, but checked another used PCB and did exactly the same (two exact same fault PCB?)
Maybe an incorrect value set somewhere in eeprom?
Will appreciate your support and able to compensate if I can afford it.
Thanks in advance and Keep healty
Great videos!
Ricardo
a great job. Sorry abou "reat"!
I would throw that piece of junk in the trash dumpster and buy a new printer.
hey man, that's a lot of female worship going on in the back ground
Hahaha well... Hayley Williams has been my crush for several years 😂
Hi! You are using I kind of trick you said, to release printing head! Some "click" and it goes right and left! But I don't have this "click" button! Can you please help me? My model is Brother 260c, I can send a photos, videos, through Telegram or Whatsapp! Can we contact?
Hi! If you can't release the head manually it's easier to power on the printer and remove the power cord when the head moves on its own, there's nothing wrong by doing this :)
