Bedding fish are aggressive, protective, but usually not hungry... Their need to defend the beds outweighs the desire to eat however, properly presented rigs and baits can almost guarantee you a strike!! Let's go over these two methods and get you ready to catch big bass on beds!!

Holy eff this worked. Had a 6 pounder bedded down at my favorite pond and could not get him to bite anything. I tried trick worms, lizards, jigs, spinner baits, etc. He bit the gilly!!!! Thanks Mike!

Super cool trick! We use a tiny piece of styrofoam from the lid of nightcrawler containers to float worms off the bottom for large trout in the Sierra Nevada Mts, but I never would have thought of doing this for bass! Awesome! Also the packing peanuts are so “moldable”, it’s perfect. I just love your “in the shop” vids. Thanks so much Mike!

@@mikeiaconellifishing - Yeah, it’s funny because most believe that especially with trout in ultra clear water everything has to look ultra natural even with bait, but nothing looks less natural than a small piece of styrofoam on the tip of a hook by the nightcrawler.😂 We hammer them that way though.

Had high hopes for Gilly on beds. Neither male or female were interested in the Gilly sidehooked. Craws were the bait they hit today. 4 solid 2-3lb bass. 💪
I bet the gilly would work fantastic on a VMC rugby head. That EWG hook with the weight on the front might just be the right fit.
It's perfect on a VMC Rugby! The beautiful part of this bait is that it can be rigged dozens of ways!

I just got the Gilly bait and absolutely love it. Got the “Ike” color and have the crappie color on back order. Love it. It’s really cool to rig it as a line through with a treble hook at the bottom.

Ike saying nose hook is the best way... ignoring the confusing EWG hook-up, where the suggested hook is a 4 EWG. Go 2 or 3 EWG, you can use tungsten nail weights, and put floating weights in the top of the gilly.

Does the packing peanut dissolve inside the bait like it tends to in some warmer water?? Grandpa used to use those foam ear plugs sometimes in certain baits.
The eco friendly ones melt when they hit the water. I used a piece of pipe insulation on mine... a thing of beauty!

Catch the fish, get your pic then put it right back where you got it. No harm doing it that way. The harm done is when you put it in your livewell and drive around the lake with it or even worse, taking it home, which leaves the nest completely vulnerable to bluegills and other pesky bed raiders
No you really shouldn't. But most anglers need to go after fish that are easy to catch so they do it anyway.

I don't have a boat or any electronic equipment to find bedding under water so I'm hoping my gilley can get the bank bass
I bought the smallest and medium size Gilley just because you designed it. I couldn't find a size 3 ring ewc hook so I bought size 4. Hooked it like you said and put a nail weight in its chin. Mine won't swim upright though. The top is at around 10 o'clock. Do you have any suggestions on how to correct this issue? Any help would be appreciated.

I do my best to stay away from bedding fish. It’s possible I’m the only person who does.
I reckon it’s best to leave them to their business, if we want to have our business later on.
But, I have to say, these tips have got my interest. I can see a lot of uses for these, not just during the spawning period.
You just sold some more Gillies, and I’m sure your sponsors will be very happy!
Its not the best thing to do if you care about the resource at all. For invasive fish you want remove its good but otherwise not so much. A large amount of people care only about themselves and catching fish so they have no qualms about it.

I’ve been using the gilly lately. I figured out how to hook it to get it to swim upright but I worried about hook penetration. Not sure when I set that the hook will pop out and bite.
try working the hook through a couple times and just leave the very tip of the hook exposed

I don't understand how that styrofoam peanut we'll stay in the Lord without disintegrating in water I use those Styrofoam peanuts at work when you put those in water it dissolves apart
