    You're right. The short face gave a greater bite force allowing it to crush bone and toe be able to fight off other animals that had made the kill so they could take it away. It had an excellent smell, so it could smell a kill far away and then run swiftly on its long legs to exploit the situation. It must have been a magnificent creature to behold.

      Why did they and so many other animals die off around 11,000 years ago? That's just 6,500 years before the pyramids were built.

    I heard speculation that one reason Grizzlies are somewhat shy and easily spooked is they lived with and feared the short faced bears.

      Nope . They are shy and spooked because of us. Yes the short faced bear is scary . But humans are deadly and show no mercy.

      Amazingly there's new talk and research to show that they are now starting to think that it was infact the brown bear 🐻 that's responsible for causing the downfall of the short faced bear 🐻 . It's smaller size playing to its advantage! By being smaller it required less food. It was faster and more manoeuvrable, enabling it to reach carcasses faster than the short faced bear 🐻. On the occasions the brown bear 🐻 hunted, the odds of it being more successful than the short faced bear 🐻 were much higher due to the advantages the brown bear had by being faster and able to change direction far quicker to his furry counterpart!
      Hope this is helpful or at least gives you something to ponder over,
      Merry Christmas and wishing you happiness, health and wealth for the New Year 🎅

      There are no megalithic man-made structures from 12,000 years ago, what on Earth are you talking about here? Where did you read this "fact" that most of them are over 12,000 years old? The most advanced structure made by humans 12,000 years ago is in Turkey and it's a temple.
      The great pyramids of Giza were built some 4.700 years ago. The pyramids were 8,000 years in the future for the humans living 12,000 years ago.
      That being said you should probably watch 10,000BC because that movie has the same dumb and unscientific idea that you had.

      It is highly highly unlikely that humans 12,000 years ago could domesticate giants such as Mammoths. And it is basically impossible for them to domesticate short faced bears or any type of large predator.
      "If u can train bears and elephants today why not short face bears or mammoths"

  • @rickr7599
    @rickr7599 2 роки тому

    During it's time this has got to be the most feared animal in N.America. I can't imagine what it would be like to come across it in the wild...I'd feel a lot better if I had a Wetherby high powered rifle with me..that's an elephant weapon of immense kill power. If I had no weapon I would probably just try to stand as still as possible and/ or step backwards very slowly or lay down and hide if at a long distance from it, yet it's sense of smell would maybe detect me...depending on wind direction. Bears have some of the keenest sense of smell known. Playing dead is what experts say and never ever!.....make direct eye contact with it...they say if you do all bears take that as a sign of a threat to them and they will respond. I cannot imagine playing dead around it with it sniffing me all over. The nerve that would take without panicking would be incredible, yet with life on line we do what we have to do.....Bear Spray on this monster??......I would not trust it with this species...too wild and just too much kill spirited probably. Just the intake of lbs of meat it would require to live would be incredible. Any other animals would never get any where near it. It probably scavenged often like most bears and any animal over it's kill would leave except for maybe the N American lion which would unwisely hold it's ground the first time around and not after if it lived from a previous encounter with this bear. I have read in other articles---the predicted speed of this bear is incredible...it simply had it all for a carnivore of it's era. A friend of mine thinks the "Terror Bird" was so very dangeous as well and would put up a good offense vs this bear.....🤣.....one swipe of this bear's paw 👀 would be all that was needed as the head of this bird would be laying at it's feet!......Thanks for all of your videos...they are smartly crafted and well scripted....now I'm going out in back for some more firewood ( I live very near and next to a forest ).....after viewing this I'm a little nervous 😳.

    THANK YOU for arguing this animal was an omnivore, not a specialist predator or scavenger.
    Though that raises questions to why it went extinct, given that it should have been adaptable enough to survive either human colonization or major climatic changes.

    • @NORTH02
      @NORTH02  5 років тому +3

      Yeah lol thanks for appreciating it, I watched some documentary a long time ago that said it was a specialist predator and I though this until I did some research.
      I think they went extinct for the same reason all the other North America mega fauna died. This reason is not completely figured out yet but I haven’t done a lot of research.

    • @bkjeong4302
      @bkjeong4302 5 років тому +2

      NORTH 02
      It would make sense for this bear to go extinct from the same general cause as the other megafauna, but its adaptability should have given it some protection against human beings and even more so against climatic changes, which are the two most likely answers to that question. It’s one of the most frustrating extinctions to puzzle out.
      The best sources for this topic are probably scientific papers that have been published online. For books, The End of the Megafauna is a decent read that covers the problems with both climatic change and humans as a general cause of megafauna collapse.

      @@bkjeong4302 Add into the equation this animals large size. Being that big required a lot of calories. Grasslands in S. America are mostly gone, and this animal was def. not a pute herbivore, it needed meat.
      Being big gives you temporary success but in the long haul it is a recipe for extinction, especially if you require meat in your diet.
      I say figuring out why wild horses went extinct in north is a far bigger puzzle then this behemoth
