It’s something few parents of children with severe disabilities ever discuss - at least not openly: the personal toll measured in stress and frustration. In some homes, the burden can become so isolating and depressing that parents sometimes keep children locked indoors for days at a time. In the Western Cape, state-sponsored Iris House Children’s Hospice provides a vital free service that gives parents much-needed respite from the pressures of raising children with disabilities. But it’s a service under threat. By the end of April, drastic budget cuts across various departments and provinces threaten to substantially reduce Iris House’s income. And it’s not the only NGO facing an existential crisis.

Thank you, Carteblanche for once again being the voice for disabled children falling through the cracks in the system. Parents like me appreciate it. Sometimes we feel unseen.

We should really be serious on who we vote for. A degraded social system where we pay taxes is unacceptable

I know the needs of these children. It places a huge burden on the parents. They say they want to employ disabled people but they don't.My daughter was told the couldn't employ her because she is deaf. The government won't give her a grant because they say she can work.😢

But yet, what about those R350 grants and the fact that Cyril wants to increase them. We need more jobs available for grant recipients so that those monies can be allocated to organizations like this ... rather than juat cutting the budget the whole time

That poor mom. Even lifting a grown child is incredibly difficult.

This is heartbreaking. I cannot even fathom what this mother is going through. Looking after a special needs child is no joke. Two! It's a full-time job. Support is definitely needed to ease their burden and give them some much needed rest and help

Breaks my heart! How can people be so cruel and not want to give these organisations money? Our taxes are meant to be used for this sort of thing!

As an director and advocate for an NPO Autism Strong Academy, it hits home when seeing how children with disabilities are just cast aside. There are so much money wasted on ridiculous salaries (government members), Public servants as they say but its all about money! We as NPO's are doing the best we can but cannot survive without government support. My take is that have a sit down with npo members, DSD and all relevant members to come up with ideas that can help both parties. Myself and my team have many ideas and i believe so does other npo members but due to red tapes our ideas will not be tabled for a solution but the government will rather feed "US" NPO'S to the wolves.

Can't the Wcape government move funds from another sector?
And what about 'backabuddy' initiative for Iris House?

This is heartbreaking. The government should provide for those in need as there are ample provisions for building new and renovating public schools they should allow ample budget for schools for disabilities and old age homes as well. So thankful for the NGOs , for charities , businesses and the compassionate public who provide sponsors but surely our government can assist in uplifting the lives of those in need in our country. Praying for change in our country for the right people to be in position to help bring correct perspective in these matters and for these issues to be addressed. 🙌🏽🌈💜

Giving freeloaders who dont want to find a job R350 every month for votes is more important to the government than helping the vulnerable or needy

@@expose_massive_banking_crime would you like to explain your position to me - a mother of a special needs child living in Cape Town? My autistic child could not get placement anywhere in the Western Cape in any special needs school because the ones that exist are over-prescribed and there is no plan to build more...now they are taking away funding from those organisations that COULD help. This is NOT propaganda but REALITY in the lives of MANY families such as mine. Your thoughtlessness and ignorance is pathetic.
