- Orson Welles and Oliver Reed descend on Merv Griffin on April 25, 1980. They discuss an unfinished comedy they made together called "Rider," and a surprisingly sober Reed plugs his movie "Dr. Heckle and Mr. Hype."

He should have been James Bond at least once
Yep would of been epic
@Seth Hesio, yeah, would have been a really interesting choice in the late 60s early 70s. Too bad it never happened.
No he is too good to play this character
Too heavy😜
To have said he should have been James Bond, clearly you don't know the actor's actor he was. To play JB would have been frivolous for him.
Loved watching Oliver Reed when he was sober he was a great raconteur to
I like him best after 5 whiskeys
He was such a bore.
He was always an arrogant dick, but he was usually drunk. Here he isn't drunk here and you can see his intelligence and verbal skills. He's still an arrogant dick. Lol.
He was still great at the end in Gladiator, unfortunately his arrogance was still there and he died of alcohol poisoning challenging a group of UK sailors to a drinking contest in a pub on location. Very sad and embarrassing end to such a talent.

Simply wonderful television. Sadly, those days are gone.
Orson Welles was a genius
That is Charo Pete damn I'm old
@Nigel Buckham I don't know what you're talking about.........Not only did he survive CK, he thrived artistically like no other filmmaker, with the possibility of Fellini. He followed KANE with THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, - which if it hadn't been taken out of his hands by RKO and butchered violently, would have left KANE in the dust..........What about his Shakespeare Trilogy? CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT has been hailed as having one of the greatest battle sequences in cinema history; TOUCH OF EVIL begins with an opening tracking-shot that is like film-ballet - and has been ripped off continuously through the decades.; Truffaut said CONFIDENTIAL REPORT was one of his favorite films that nobody knows about.............Orson was so much more than CK. That's like saying SGT. PEPPER was the only great album the Beatles released.
@@rbrookswilliams1689 one of the greatest Macbeths I have ever seen.
@@Mr.D-Mentia Yes, its superb........Roman Polanski did a version that was violent in the extreme. He was coming off the Manson Murders - and had to vent to the Universe, and exorcise personal demons.
@@rbrookswilliams1689 I think the OP meant he never made a masterpiece like Citizen Kane again, and they are correct. Nothing he made after came close. That's not to say he wasn't a genius.
Met Ollie and Hurricane Higgins (snooker player) walking into Ulster Television Studio in Belfast mid nineties, both were drunk! said hi to Oliver and he said "piss off sonny" but threw me a smile and a wink!! I just laughed and just loved the guy, favourite movie as a kid was Hannibal Brooks, we'll never see his like again.
"Brooks! Brooks! I think I broke my leg Brooks!"
Great film.
Oliver Reed was such a loveable rascal. Absolutely adored him ❤️
He was the prototype for Tom Hardy. Real toff.
Wow! Orson Welles and Oliver Reed. Two exceptiona actors who know and practiced their craft while being very aware of where they stood in their time by knowing their pasts and history.
You just don't see such interviews these days. It's not about the glitter with these two gentlemen.
I really love how spontaneous and vivacious talk shows of the seventies and eighties were. Modern talk shows seem too packaged and artificial. Orson was uncharacteristically quiet in this interview. It seemed like his mind was somewhere else.
I agree, watch this or Parkinson and you get real conversations and insights, watch kimmel or Norton and you get sycophancy
@@ianmedium Parkinson talked too much.
Comparing those people and the Human Sewage of today and times....is like Comparing Gold to Shit !
Yup ~ Orson the sober fellow of the two seemed very much on his guard set up, as he was, against a known drunk of possible uncontrolled blathering Orson might have to parry with Orwellian muster ~ although Ollie Reed does seem to be more uncharacteristically coherent with the two, Wells and Reed, managing to play each other off with ping-pongs of contrived controlled repartee.
Watch Graham Norton - a breath of fresh air.
Oliver Reed, quite simply the sexiest man that ever lived! And that voice....!!!
He does it for me on so many levels
He was one handsome gentleman and that voice, instantly recognisable !!!
This is amazing! Oliver Reed AND Orson Wells? Great conversation. We can really see how intelligent and thoughtful Red could be. He was not just a drunken fool.
Merv is like the announcer at a tag team wrestling event. He introduces the guests and gets out of the way when they go at it. When things get out of hand he interrupts and changes the subject. Very clever.
Absolutely brilliant spontaneous interesting conversation. What ever happened to these types of programmes
People no longer have the attention span for interesting, extended conversations.
@@strqrt70
You absolutely right about that, 👍
People are easily bored now due to cell phones and social media. Letterman is and was amazing but the real last type of this conversational format was imo Tom Snyder who was on after (and directly because of) Dave.
Oliver Reed was fantastic in Women in Love, Triple Echo, Oliver! The Devils etc SO lovely to see good old fashioned aura and charisma informed by intellect and native wit. What have we lost?
Don't forget - The Three musketeers and The Four Musketeers. Also, Gladiator.
@@Inglese001 3 and 4 were work - Gladiator was a long overdue tribute/ performance/ Reed in his day would have had that portly Aussie gentleman's role and made mincemeat of him. Ollie would have made a sterling Flashman, all a 'tache and smoulder . Those Musketeers movies are pretty good though, fair dos
@@TECHNOIR Crowe is from New Zealand. A Kiwi, not an Aussie. And he was great in Gladiator. 😉
@@jonberry5816 Alright, a corpulent Kiwi then, I hear your Crowe and raise you a Reed ua-cam.com/video/ZrYUrk3NPO0/v-deo.html
@@TECHNOIR agreed Reed would of acted and drank him under the table.
Only on a talk show Could Orson Welles,Oliver Reed & Charo be in the same line up.
"Tell me when she's finished." 😂
Orson really summed up Oliver ...'he displaces air ' ...in Oliver his menace literally charges the air around him .
I just wish we would have got the ending of gladiator that Ridley wanted ...reed was supposed to go out fighting like the old gladiator he was but unfortunately he died .Might I add after arm wrestling half of a pub and drinking plenty .I'm sad that he died because he he still had some great performances in him ...but it seemed a fitting death and one he would probably laugh about if there was a heaven .
What a fascinating interview, Reed and Welles both have the kind of seductive voice that could read the Telephone directory out loud and keep you enthralled. Thanks for sharing
I miss Merv Griffin and Mike Douglas. Great daytime hosts.
I always remember Merv on at 8:30 pm in the 70's. It was a 90 minute show I recall. Was there a time his was a daytime show? Maybe in the 60's. Mike Douglas, along with Dinah Shore, were back-to-back afternoon shows I remember. Great shows, all of them.
Aaah!! ""The Incomprehensible Charo"!! She is a VIRTUOSO flamenco guitarist!!
My goodness me. This is spun gold ! Notice when Oliver gets asked who is the greatest actor... I bet he and Orson exchanged a look... They both knew . Its all about the craft... and the cinematic theatricals. And the tinsel and dust......
One tidbit Orson and Ollie failed to mention about the trouble they had getting paid by producers in Greece: Not only were they not paid - they were stuck with an outrageous hotel bill. Upon learning of this, Oliver Reed promptly went down to the hotel nightclub/disco in the basement and proceeded to smash/rip apart the place with his bare hands. Welles said everyone was standing around, mouth agape, in awe of Reed's violence (including the police who were called). Ollie simply walked out of the place and no one dared getting in his way...
I could not decide whether Orson and Oliver actually like each other. Certainly mutual respect.
@@Bombabingbong66 Yes, they had mutual respect for each other professionally, definitely. But to your point, I did pick up a bit of frostiness and disconnection from Reed in this interview; apparently Oliver had a talent for messing with people to the degree that it was impossible to know if he was putting you on or not. A Sexy Beast for sure. You may want to check out "My Lunches with Orson" if you haven't already - it's a fascinating read and chock-full of anecdotes including the aforementioned "Greek Tragedy" haha
@@Bombabingbong66 Oliver Reed and Orsen Wells were one-offs ps Oliver Reed was on at least three occasions considered to play 007 James Bond also good to message to my fellow Sharpe
Why listening Reed and Welles is a great pleasure? Their English sounds amazing.
Reed was already an accomplished hellraiser when he met and befriended Keith Moon, of whom he said, "I knew the way to the bar, but not to the bizarre. His shadow is always on the sunny side of the street with me, always, because of that path that he showed me."
Orson "may I ask you a question"
Oliver "Orson, if you are capable"
"A surprisingly sober Reed"-- LOL! Good one!
Mmm ~ I wonder, not entirely sober one is inclined to ponder.
@@JoseighBlogs By Ollie Reed standards, "sober" means NOT "(literally) falling-down drunk." LOL
Oliver is a damm good actor and an honest man. He also has a temper and will not shy away from a confrontation. Or son is more social but has those same qualities. Today’s so called actors seem to spend their time looking at press clippings and going to the gym. It all depends on what one prefers. I love these guys and gals of the past because they move me in many ways but with today’s celebs they put me to sleep and I wake up with a migraine.
Today they wouldn't be allowed to become famous, they'd be labelled misogynistic and spouting hate, by the politically correct left leaning media that exists everywhere
Was. He's been dead since 2010.
two of the best men in movies. we should feel blessed to of had them.
Oliver was a beautiful looking man and a superb actor. This has made me want to re-visit them. Triple Echo to start l think.
Try The Three Musketeers too.
Reed one of the very few people that could over shadow Welles at least for a few minutes .
Orson was never overshadowed unless he choose to let someone else have center stage. Reed seems fairly sober for a change.
Wimpeys in the Champs Elysee🤣🤣
Oliver Reed and Orson Wells. You couldn't make that up! Thanks for sharing x
Fun fact. Oliver Reed's uncle Carol Reed directed the classic film noir 'The Third Man' with Orson Welles.
The film project of which OW and OR speak is Rider (which was never completed), and the referenced producer/director is Andrew Sinclair (1925-2019).
celebrities used to have character. what a crazy concept.
Reed would have been perfect to play explorer Sir Richard Burton
This is a JEWEL of a talk show. How did they get these two great characters together? 🤩 It's awesome to listen to their experiences!
Orson Welles - always a real treat whenever he was on these shows - the so-called stars today are so boring and full of themselves and over-paid for doing very little and totally forgettable .
It's always sweet looking back...safe but you are wrong

A great interview with them picking on each other😄🎬
🇬🇧🗣️And yes Oliver's uncle is indeed the great Carol Reed who directed Orson's the third Man,,,, Orson who was a difficult actor for directions, said of Carol
" He's the greatest director I have ever worked with 🎬🗣️
GOD BLESS ALL THREE OF THEM 💪💯🗣️🙏 REST WITH THE BEST 🙏 LONDON LOVE'S YOU ✌️🙏❣️😇😎🙊🙈🙉🇬🇧👍
Brilliant company, we don’t get such great characters these days.
He really was so Handsome
Real conversions with people not afraid to speak their minds. We all know modern day celeb would never speak anything other than double speak or commercial value. The consolidation of the industry has killed honesty.
He was so intriguing and gorgeouly masculine when was sober. He looks healthy here. RIP
This is the only interview I’ve seen with Olly where he’s not a belligerent drunk.
I saw him interviewed by Max Headroom and as Max was straight with Oliver the interview was fine. I also saw a more typical interview, playing up to his reputation, by Des O’Connor, and it was awful.Des sniggering like a school boy as he asked provocative questions in anticipation of some sort of reaction.
There were a few more on UA-cam, really interesting but they were taken down. Shame, as they were great
There's a three part Parkinson interview with a sober OR on UA-cam.
intelligent conversation on a talk show - gee, what a concept ! - oh the good ol' days
Oliver reed And orson welles the duo we all needed you know Oliver was thinking get in the kitchen and make me some paella
I could watch them all day.
Wow. I was on edge the whole video expecting blood to flow.
Person had the most wonderful voice.
Charo ... years ago seen her perform 🎭 at the NUGGET in SPARKS, NEVADA.

Ein gutaussehender Mann 👍
Reed was only 41 at the time.,.is it just me or did people behave/dress much older than their actual age back then
Ollie looked quite old quite quick.
I realize this is only a partial segment of the program, though I'd be honestly surprised if Merv did not ask Orson to show off his jacket lining, and then compare it with his... "Ooooooo... that's nice."
SCTV!
1980!
Fantastic
I like how merv griffen talks so fast 😂
If you think hes sober you have no idea about drinkers
So true.
How right you are
He’s not sober but he’s not drunk either. He’s refreshed but not inebriated lol.
poor Charo
I was actually Floor Manager for this particular episode. What a privilege, Great days.
I remember Orson always brought his own food with him.
Whether it be sandwiches or
Pie, the food was always wrapped up in ( Clingfilm) aka Cellophane.
Well you can imagine Orsons
Appetite. There was so much
Cellophane. Anyway i decided to recycle the material. If you look at the back of the stage
You can see all the Cellophane.
And that was just one of his
Baguettes.
Big Suze keeps the scissors in the same drawer with the clingfilm, in case Alan Johnson really needs to know. He could always stick it on the laterbase, after he gets his wireless printer hooked up to Windows Vista, and has his cuppa builder's tea. Just just don't touch his duvet. You're not his wife; he had a wife, now he doesn't.
100 proof interview.
Good stuff
How could Orson Welles sneak out of any place?
Should have been called Orson Swells
Actor. Late Hours..Have someone pack out his Belongings..
Good point. Under cover of darkness, silently, like a mist along the ground. I mean to say he didn't climb out a window or shimmy down the fire escape!
I'd like to talk about hamburgers. what a joy for the audience
Oliver Reed thinking he's in the same league as Orson Welles. An amusing tirade.
I met Oliver Reed in a hotel bar in Doncaster, England, approx 1991. It was 8.00am and we were coming down for breakfast. Oliver was totally drunk with facial cuts and abrasions. It was sad to see him like that.
Doesnt Charo want to know about Dolores del Rio? By Root, she meant roots and origins
A little cringy, but absolutely enjoyable.
when Oliver was back home he talked with a Birmingham accent
The era of the giants of screen and cinema waxing lyrical on chat shows is over, innit. The modern day version is vacuous and asinine by comparison.
KRAMER: Hey, Jerry! Come in here a sec! Hey!
JERRY: Oh my God!
KRAMER: It's the Merv Griffin set
JERRY: How did you get this in here?
KRAMER: Oh, you just bring it in sideways and hook it.
JERRY: So where are you gonna sleep?
KRAMER: Yeah ... backstage.
ELAINE: Phew! This chair smells like garbage.
KRAMER: Oh, well a lot of the stars from the 70's - they were not as hygienic as they appeared on TV yeah, you can take Mannix for example.
How is this 4k? The original tape is in STD def
Compare the classiness of this to Tom Cruise on Oprah. Night and day
Who is the lady in this video?
a real chat show...
When in doubt: Punt.
Two icons in the same room. What wonders flow.
Ollie may have had his probs with alcohol but Orson is the one with the cigar here tho......
affs is was just gettin interesting
Who was the woman on this show?
Charo
Such an interesting contriving of theatrical toings-and-froings of 'congratulatory' and 'you're the greatest' between Wells and Reed with a brief bizarre bubbling of the cartoonish sweet foreign-speaking wedding-gown dressed girl. Who was she? Reed seeming to be relatively sober in this USA show of yore was impressive with his Russian history on Peter The Great anecdotes of which of Peter's time in London were detailed and charming for a drunk to so eloquently relate. Loved it. After visiting and staying in London Tzar Peter went back too his homeland and built the mightily impressive St. Petersburg 'the Venice of Russia'. Despite present Ukraine situation I believe as a UK citizen Britain and Russia are linked in and within inviolable histories, and should continue to remain so. 🙂
Bobbie what a windbag you are!
The female guest is Charo. She is a famous and celebrated flamenco guitarist. Listen again... she's a lot wittier and clever than the boys give her credit for! And she's still alive!!
@@siobhancrowley5195 Thank you ~ I didn't mean to discredit her ~ Love Flamenco ~ Have looked her out and agree WOW!🙂

For some reason i thought that Oliver Reed was considerably taller than he was.
Oliver Reed talking incomprehensible nonsense once again, but with his mellifluous voice you keep hoping that he'll eventually start making sense.
We dont have these hamburgers in europe. They're brilliant.
Why dont you make a franchise over there.
They already have them.
😶🧐??
A fountain of knowledge. Now gone. I'm 42 and a pale image of Sir Oliver.
Orson Wells and Olly Reed under assumed names 😄😄😄Yeah that happened.
Never heard of Reed.
Charo couldn't follow half of the conversation and barbs between these 2 legends.

The shows were about the guests, not about the hosts.
Would have been a great James Bond
When in doubt??? Do nothing. Hell yeah baby

Orson followed his own advice here and to me he proved he was much more secure in himself than Oliver.
Not allowed to say when somebody is speaking drivel? Quite decent drivel - granted!
You obviously don’t understand british humour, Oliver wasn’t being nasty to Charo it was simply a bit of humorous sarcasm that a lot of American people think of as nastiness or disrespecting someone. It was nothing of the kind, he said it in sarcastic jest.
Left what I find to be the best I took away. And will leave the rest to each person’s perspective.
