Galentine's Day (Hippo Edition)

Happy World Hippo Day!
The Saint Louis Zoo is home to three female Nile hippos: Mashavu, Kiboko, and Tombi.
This Galentine’s Day our girls spent much of their time sleeping, gliding through the water, vocalizing, and playing.
A typical day for our bloat (a group of hippos) begins with a nutritious breakfast, a refreshing nap in their heated pool and a quick facial from our school of cichlid fish.
Hippos are highly social animals, so afternoons are a more energetic time with lots of splashing. Hippos will often spar playfully with their four large canines. This is an important form of communication and helps them to establish social hierarchies and relationships.
