I recently got back into amateur photography after about 6 or 7 years of not touching my camera. I treated myself to a canon 5dmkii back in 2011, just before the birth of my first child. After a couple of years and more children, having to heft around the 5d, a couple of lenses and a flash was such a hassle that I stopped taking it out altogether. A couple of months ago I sold all my Canon gear and bought a Fuji xt30ii. Now I carry it with me all the time and I've fallen back in love with taking photographs!
Had the 5D3 and sold it for same reason. Too big. I’m using a Sony A7III, smaller but lenses make it heavy and cumbersome. Was thinking about a FF point and shoot w/small lenses like A7CII, Fuji x100v, or even the Leica Q3 and others like it.
If you ever have the opportunity to try a Lumix GX-9, give it a go! With an Olympus 25mm, Leica 15mm, or Lumix 30mm macro on it, it is a gem! Thanks for the video, Loren
Interesting. I used to do a lot of photography back in the day with film and had my own darkroom. I fell out of it in the 80s but a couple of years ago, in an effort to rekindle my love for photography, I bought a DSLR and a selection of lenses. I had it all in a backpack but it was so heavy and cumbersome that I could never be bothered taking it out. Two days ago, before I watched this video, I sent it all off as a trade in and today I'm sitting waiting for a courier to bring my new Leica Q3. Can't wait to have a camera that I can take with me and the simplicity of not constantly swapping lenses. Great video, Thank you.
Brilliant!! Thank you for the video... I've recently left my heavy Canon gear behind (except for some commercial work) and never leave home without my Q2. At 60 yrs old I don't see giving up the newfound freedom and spontaneity anytime soon, or again. Cheers!
I have come to the same conclusion and settled for the Panasonic GX9 with the Leica Lumix 15mm f1.7 lens. This combination gives great results and is a take anywhere kit.
Same here-I ditched 15 years of accumulated Canon 5Ds and lenses for a Q2. For all those reasons. I’d like to add an M11 Monochrom and then likely done forever.
This is very true! It’s either my OM5 with the pancake lens, equivalent 40mm 1.7 or my 100v. Believe it or not the OM5 with that combo is slightly smaller than the 100v
Hi Paul, here's a little story for you. One time Robert Cappa was in the apartment of HCB .He was staying overnight. The time went around to quite late at night and Robert said to Henri would you like to go around to the cafe on the corner for a last drink. Henri said if you wish, and put on his jacket. When Henri picked up his camera Robert said , will you be using that? Henri said probably not. Robert said , why take it then ? Agree having a small camera with you is far more valuable than a bigger more capable camera at home. Would love a Q, but.... So I carry a GRIII and it makes amazing images.
I only shoot with a pair of Leica M's and Ricoh GR3 and love only carrying one camera and one lens at a time when not shooting an event. If I have more gear with me means I have choices to make and by that time I've already missed the moment. Thanks
What this video mentions is a key reason I can't bring myself to buy a Leica Q camera, as much as I like what Leica has done. I draw a line where I can't put the camera in a jacket pocket. The X100V, Ricoh GR qualify to me, so some do some micro four thirds models depending which lens. I love the Ricoh GRIIIx, would have kept it if the AF worked well at night. The Leica Q is just too big/heavy for me, even if my brain still tries to justify getting one from time to time. ;-) I definitively want to "wear" the camera. But as you say all cameras are amazing now, and it's a matter what works for each of us. In my case I would never forget I am "armed" with a Ricoh GRIIIx just because it's in my pocket :-)
I know the camera is now out of production, but my EDC since a while is the Leica CL. Even smaller than the Q and operation is just great. Unfortunately for Leica the system was not an immediate success and as mentioned they discontinued it.
I have some really nice Nikon gear which are still my main cameras for landscape and night photography, but the Q2 - and in a few weeks from now the Q3 - is always with me. The only camera with a strap and always at my side. it made me start street photography and I enjoy that little camera very much. Even if I only go out with a purse, its with me. Even in bad weather it takes beautiful B&W shots. I am always looking for interesting shots and whatever presents itsself, the Q is up to it as long as it does not need a telephoto lens.

I moved from the Canon EOS 1D series system to a Leica M system back about 12 years ago, and I’ve not looked back. These cameras go nearly everywhere I go…. (Except work… as I work in secured facilities that do not allow any type of outside photography). It’s a great suggestion … and words wisdom. Thanks Paul…
I realised recently I had fallen out of love with my 2 mirrorless bodies, holy trinity lenses and a heap of primes, because I just didn't enjoy them in my hands in the street. What I did love was my Canon 7 rangefinder and tiny glass. I cashed all my digital kit in for a well known digital rangefinder brand and 3 primes and I now carry it everywhere. So convenient, discrete, perfect fit and feel...who needs an EVF and autofocus...many photographers probably, just not this one! Keep up the good work everyone!

Completely agree, taking a camera everywhere is the best way to improve. It's just like playing your drums or guitar every day. You start seeing things differently and noticing photo opportunities everywhere. Thanks for a great video!
Great video. Makes plenty of sense as the heavier traditional DSLR and lenses are just too much to haul around. I think personal choices of gear can change as time goes along. This has inspired me to lighten up my gear closet and get back out there and take some photos.
Fantastic!! And I’m sure some people couldn’t care less and would carry heavy large cameras around. But I can’t tell you the amount of people that thought they’d get a bunch of gear only to let it gather dust and use their phone instead.
Love the 'owl' analogy, personally i carry a Sony HX60v in my bag wherever i go. I get so much enjoyment out of using a point and shoot i bought in 2015 & havnt bust the bank on.
One aspect of the large vs small debate that I don’t think has been mentioned is that if you are shooting events (eg, weddings, conferences, corporate open houses, etc.) professionally with a large camera, you can see how people will glance at you, immediately figure out that you are the official photographer & instantly become more cooperative (eg, offer to get out of your way, tell you when something important is about to happen in the next room, offer to gather up groups for you, etc.). Not once has anything like that ever happened when I have been shooting fly-on-the-wall style with my Pana G9ii or my phone. And, FWIW, I just took a 7000 mi road trip (vacation) across the USA & the only cameras I brought were a couple of M4/3rds & a waterproof P&S and LOVED the freedom it gave me!
Another great informative video Paul, I think I may need to take heed on downsizing my equipment. I really only use my X100V. Proceeds could always go towards my Leica.
I love my Q2M along with my soft case of color filters. Paul when you want color what do you use? I'm thinking of the Q3 when it's announced. I sold my Q2 to get the Q2M & I miss color as well. The Q2 maxes out at ISO 6400 which is where the Q2M is just getting warmed up. The Q3 will have the M11 sensor which is a big upgrade in ISO performance
It’s definitely more about what you love more than the actual size. It just so happens that most people see bigger cameras as a hassle to carry with them.
Totally agree. Traded a mountain of Nikon DSLR gear for a Sony A7c and never looked back; for precisely the reasons listed here. Threw a muffin 35/2.8 on there and now it hangs right beside my keys, ready to head out any time-- which it does every day 🤘
The Panasonic Lumix LX5 and LX7 both can't be beat for a fine small compact that take excellent photos and don't cost an arm and a leg like the Leicas, Fuji X100, and Richo GRIII.
Like your content trying to find a good every day camera myself. Went the x100v route but couldn’t connect with that camera. Might have to try a pixii since the m series is so expensive
I very much agree that downsizing your photographic equipment is not a drama, quite the contrary. However, we need to understand how much we actually want to downsize, because, obviously, some renunciation is inevitable in the end. I am content to leave the house with a camera and only one lens, but over time I have discovered that quality is the most important parameter for me. The files that come out of the GR III or the Fuji X100 V, although very good, are not the same ones produced by the Leica SL2-S with an Apo Asph. (just to give an example). We need to understand what we want most and act accordingly. Everyone will find their own magic recipe, and so will be happy to take lots of photos. Thank you for your videos, always clear, comprehensive and instructive.
Thanks so much for watching. I love my original SL. It’s heavy but I can make it small with an M mount lens on it. I do this for a living so for me it’s become less of a problem to carry something bigger around at times. However the Q2M comes out with me all the time rather than just when I intend to take photos.
Aside from a large physical camera and lens setup, I struggle with a large RAW file size out of my Sony A7R4 61mp sensor. So I leave that camera home most of the time, and it’s looking at a new home. But keeping my GR3x, Leica CL w/Voigtlander and L mount Leica lenses, and my Sony A7R3 with Zeiss Loxia lenses.. my sensor sweet spot is max - 47mp.

Don’t want to get rid of any of my gear because I might regret it later, maybe I am also a bit of a collector… Recently I started to just throw my Pen Mini E-PM1 into the bag I take to work with just three small primes. Love the simplicity and still astounding image quality of this old entry level camera and it looks gorgeous… the smartphone is always with me and while it’s a great backup camera, I simply don’t enjoy shooting with it that much. Now I also start to shoot with film again, let’s see where this takes me. 🙏
For walking around, my Olympus E-M10 II with a small 17mm prime is perfect. And the flip screen allows me to be fairly discreet and stealthy 👍 Not all of us can afford Leica branded equipment.
So true! I've had a Ricoh GR since 2005 when the first digital version arrived. I now have the GRiii AND GRiiiX while all the time since then having a bag with a DSLR/Mirrorless setup. The point is though that the GR is ALWAYS in my pocket, door pocket of the car, dashboard of the campervan etc etc even when the R6 is tucked safely away. Its so much fun to use as well as portable and I capture so many more great shots with it simply because its always right at hand everywhere I go. Quite tempted by a Q2M now which is how I found your excellent channel, but actually worried its a little too big to be an everyday carry. Keep up the great work on the channel. Its inspiring and helpful.
You are allover-rightyright! Leica Monochrome is fine but toooo cher (expensive) for my economising. And even a Leica isn't very small (the lenses!). Better is a camera with a foldout lense - only this gear you can 'store' smoothly, e.g. in your pocket. This might be even a Plaubel Makina 67, or a Voigtlaender Vitessa from the 1950s, a Kodak Retina from the 1930s, and others... In former days, I was fond of 18/24mm-film-Olympus Pen F, Olympus OM-1 and Pentax MX/ME: fine lenses but nicely short, small, smart. Today, I got a 1958 Voigtlaender VITO for 25 euros and it makes lots of fun. Nikon pro gear does the rest;-)))
I have several Fuji cameras and currently i like using the X-S20 (small) with small sigma 18-50 or small fuji primes a lot when there is a need for color photos (like family vacation). On the other hand i love the old X-Pro1 as my black and white camera (most of the time, but it can do color ;-) ) - the X-Pro1 paired with the small fuji primes is so freeing. But would love to strip down the equipment more. (for professional use is have the big X-H2S and X-T4 with the f1.4 primes. Would love to have a Q2 but I love 35mm so much. Perhaps the Q2 monochrome would be the ultimative camera i am seeking for (i want to have a super reduced camera with the feeling to have finally arrived)
I’m also a Fuji shooter. The Q2 Monochrom is a different beast and some struggle with it as it hasn’t got the snappy AF of the Fuji’s. I have an XH2 and XE4. I’m invested in Fuji. I really believe with the newest cameras they have really hit a sweet spot. I did have the X100V but I just had too many cameras that do pretty much the same thing. The XE4 is so similar.
SCREW Small SCREW Technology I am a gal, retired, 66 years old and my tote about camera is a Mamiya RB67 Pro SD and my favorite lens is a Mamiya K/L 65mm f/4.0. I do have digital equipment, but that is used for specific occasions where digital is more appropriate than film. My film backs are the motorized 6 x 8, and I always carry both color and B&W. So often I hear amateur and professional photographers advocating for the smallest lightest kit. Many say they are getting on in years so the less weight the better and these are people younger than I am. I admit that schlepping my RB67 takes considerable effort, but I can do it, even here in rural Texas where Summer is about to hit with temperatures peaking at or somewhat above 100°F / 38°C. Whether young or old, Carry what works for your photography. For me, I love my RB, even if it's like carrying a load of bricks everywhere. My doctor likes how I exercise through my photography and stay healthy. Use it or lose it.
Great philosophy Paul. I always shot with Nikon - big lenses - extra gear - it was a chore to go out. About 4 years ago I bought my first Leica. During that time I barely used my Nikon at all. I am now so simple - I have a Leica M10 Monochrom (Because that is what I love) with the smallest lenses - with vintage lenses because I like that look. I have never enjoyed photography as much as I do now. I even got a Leica iiif - it is even smaller and my true carry around for family events etc. I am a huge believer the smaller the better - No matter what brand you shoot. The key is to have it with you and easy to get out and use.

Paul...I couldn't agree with you more. I sold the majority of my big DSLRs and lens. I take my Leica Q2 with me everywhere and take lovely candid images all the time. In fact it forces one to really see their surrounded in a different perspective--a creative one. I do have the Leica SL2 and fuji XT4. At times both of those kits can be bulky especially the leica with the added weight. The only time I consciously reach for those cameras is when I am shooting subject in motion. So glad you have found the camera that works well for you. Yes I also reach for those more bulky cameras for shoots. When it’s an actual shoot. But when I just want to be ready in the moment I carry something much smaller. Either the Q2M or my M6.
Totally agree that smallness isn't an absolute goal because a camera has to have a "presence" that you interact with to make settings and human hands didn't get smaller just because the digital age arrived!
The day I held a camera was the day a began to see the world with wondering eyes. The day my combat PTSD began disappearing! Photography is therapy through art! It is a reflection of our hidden self!!

@@paulreidphotography yes I did have a bit of a meltdown, the price is crazy, but in black it is light and it takes really great black and white shots in the high contrast black and white mode. I do think though that while I wouldn’t have a colour Q2, the Monochrom is a different beast as the sensor gets to see the light it needs. BTW… the photos of your better half were great and that’s what it’s all about.

When I was at college and university I had a tiny keyring-sized digital camera, it was about 2.5" * 1.75" * 1" it was so useful for just recording things for my art studies as reference the images weren't for blowing up and printing to put on the wall but it was invaluable for the purpose I needed it for! I will have to dig it out it is probably in the back of a drawer somewhere.
Oh sooo boring!!! So much blablabla - and then just 4 examples of your beach-not-street-photography. Expected to see stuff you caught in the every day moment, to illustrate your story with less equipment. Disappointment here. And why get rid of good lenses? Last year I shot a big series in Munich's graveyards, all with a NIKON 2,8/70-200mm zoom. Heavy? Yes. And so what? Got exactly the results I wanted, was definitely worth the extra kilo.

I've made a lot of expensive mistakes. I sat out the digital era until I purchased a Fuji X-E2. It was fun to use, and I took it everywhere. Then, I "upgraded" to an X-Pro-2. It was "better" but I found it cumbersome and clumsy. So I sold it (and all those lovely Fuji lenses) and got a Canon R6 with the 24-105 f/4. It's a great camera, but even more cumbersome and clumsy. It's not as much fun, and I'm starting to feel like photography is a chore. I'd love a Q3, but it's beyond my budget. I'd love an X100V, but they seem to be backordered until the end of time. 😞
So I think it’s a real shame what happened with the X100V. It’s a great camera but they just aren’t getting manufactured to the demand. I would think the next X100 may be worth waiting on. It can’t be that far off
@@paulreidphotographyFuji is a frustrating brand. Fantastic glass, but the bodies... Tiny, gimmicky, and their pace of development is slow and haphazard. There are piles of previous models (X-Pro 3 and X'T4's are still available new 3 years on from release) and a camera people actually want (like the X-100V) is probably never to be seen again. I'm tired of waiting, but equally tired of settling for flawed products that don't engage me. The photography world seems bent on forcing their ever dwindling consumer base into a costly spiral of buy, complain, replace... That being said, if it wasn't for the prohibitive price, I'd be all over Leica. They have a plan and they stick to it... for a price.
My Q2 is attached to me now while my Z7 gets occasional outings. I’m pondering selling all my Nikon gear and getting a Leica M11 but have a concern about manual focus ( my eyes aren’t very good even with glasses)

I’ve never tried the X100, but I have had several Fujis with their excellent prime lenses for travel (X-T1 then X-Pro2). After a few years, I realized that I prefer using a zoom for travel. I found the Fuji 18-55 to have excellent IQ, but a bit too bulky for my needs. I switched to the Nikon Zfc + 16-50 lens and couldn’t be happier. It is a feather-weight combo that you can carry all day long and hardly notice it’s there. In addition to the “retro controls, an articulating screen for low shots and extended long exposure settings (up to 900s). The 20MP BSI sensor provide excellent IQ. Since purchasing it, Nikon has introduced several fast primes, which are also very small and light. For low light situations, I bring along the 23/1.7 for a 35mm EFL. I have other Nikons (the Z6ii for landscape and astro and the Z8 for birds and other wildlife), but the Zfc is the one I always have with me. I heard your interview on the Street Photography Magazine podcast a few months ago and remember it as one of the better episodes. Keep up the great work!
Do what is downsizing? Depends on the person. I know I enjoy collecting so me cameras so hv an array of Olympus Analog and Leica analog. I envision just ‘passing it along’… nothing major $ wise… old cameras, especially Olympus are pretty cheap but sure hv quality
Just bought a Nikon Z50 :) :) :) SMALL and I want to carry it everywhere!!!!!!!!!! Great IQ :) :) I will not get rid of my FF Kit (the IQ is even better)!!!!!!! But we all need something to get those creative juices running thru our veins :) Im 71yo
Good video - have you tried the Leica “Finger Loop” (which screws into the Leica Grip) for me, it transforms the ergonomics….. and makes me want to carry it even more :- )
Although I have several DSLR cameras both full and cropped sensors and several Sony mirrorless, my main camera now is my iPhone 12 (update to the 15 next month). For my chosen genres and style it is perfect. The iPhone to me is first and foremost a camera. I love it's limitations which cause me to be even more creative.
Word! Went from Nikon D850 with numerous lenses to fuji XT4 and now to Fuji X-pro1 + xt1 in 10 years. Never been more happier than with this current setup. X-pro1 for monochrome work which is 80%. Xt1 for those rainy days. Only bringing one camera and one lens regardless of situation and that is such relief.
I had my Sony A9/Zeiss 35mm 1.4 with a battery grip stolen. I still had my a6500 laying around and wow being able to put it my pocket is nice. I miss the utility but being able to walk around, point then shoot is just so relaxing.
I have a cheap, completely plastic point-and-shoot film camera I like to take with me on bike rides. At 138 grams, it's a hollow plastic box that I can slip into my jersey pocket without it bothering me when I ride. I do sometimes like to bring my larger Fuji digital camera with me, but then I need to plan my ride around carrying a backpack with me.
I love smaller and lighter cameras for everyday use. I do have a Q2 but tend to only carry that on specific occasions. My favourite daily carry cameras are M4/3, specifically the Lumix GX80, G7 and Olympus E-M1 MkII. During my working day mainly in a vehicle there’s much to be said for the G7 which has as good a grip as the Olympus but is much lighter, matched to the lovely compact Lumix 14-140 ten times zoom. I almost always have a dedicated camera with me but find a smartphone camera has its place also, especially for copying documents, taking images of, say, engine components to aid reassembly or future reference. They all have their place and I enjoy using them all.

My street axe is usually my Fujifilm X-E2 with the Fujinon 27mm pancake. Always with me, even when just going to the corner grocery, feels like I’m carrying nothing. 👌
I made the mistake of selling my Fujifilm cameras to get a Nikon Z6 and a 4x5 camera. Over this fall and winter I took very few photos and almost quit. I'm now trying to figure out how to get back to a smaller set up but the Z6 used prices and even the lenses aren't worth very much. I did sell my 4x5 to get a Pentax 67 and am taking it out on walks and am using it more than I did the 4x5. I completely agree that the choice camera makes a big difference in how much you use it.
Don't give up too easily on your Z6. I just came back from some travels where I would have preferred to have carried my old Leica Q, but I was worried about theft and security (for good reason, it turned out). So I brought my Z6 and the little Nikon 28mm f/2.8 'muffin' lens. Together they weren't much bigger than the Q and cost FAR less. And the picture quality was quite spectacular.
I use a Lumix LX-15 compact for a carry anywhere camera. I also have a couple of m4/3 cameras when I need a light-ish camera but the photography requires interchangeable lenses. And then I also have my Canon dslr for when I am on photography only outings. I only buy used from reputable outlets like mpb or WEX as this has allowed me to purchase these different cameras for particular photo purposes.
You are absolutely right. Great gear makes you go out shooting, especially if it's a light carry. I sold most of my equipment, including the mighty but super-heavy 24-90 Emarit. I bought an '81 M4P with a Summicron 35M and a Color Skopar 35mm, which makes the camera pocketable without the hood. HP5 at ISO 800 for the daily stuff, DoubleX for faces, and Delta 100 for the high-resolving B&W experience are all I need.
That’s great!!! Some people are also happy to carry medium format cameras everywhere. The majority however would leave something like this at home if they were going to the shops for milk
My EDC camera is an old EOS M with its kit lens. Otherwise I choose one of four different DSLRs for when I have something specific in mind that the EOS M just can't do (night, wildlife etc.).
You're so right. You bring back this "Art of photography" as it was, through real film photos. As you already said it well, it is the "thought process" behind the camera. But, the subject in front brings it's artistic reason to be there, in the lens. The "conversation" in between the photographer and the subjects is "printed", and the "box translater" is your tool, the camera, and the way you communicate with. I really like your beach, and the light that comes from the sand/warer. The subject becomes "anonymous" as we only see just enoughnto recognize "anyone" you wish to be on this beach. It is as, this photo propose you to be there, at her place, like an invitation. Her movement makes the photo "dynamic", opposed to "static landscape". Excellent photo! I wish I'd do some of that style!
I’m looking for something, affordable and small that I can keep on me wherever I go, yes I have the Fuji Xt3 which is quite small considering but even that or similar you can’t carry everywhere. I had the Canon G7 X, I won it soon after it’s release date I think it was but I wasn’t about to check that out, that camera got me interests in “proper” photography, not just the snapshots I’d been taking up until then, great camera, perfect size to just stick in your jacket, even got it in my jeans pocket too, I’d love something like that but being on such a tight budget it’s difficult but I’m saving for something like it.
It’s a pity the cost of the older Fuji x100 series has gone so high as even the first and original x100 is a great option. Unfortunately even that is now over priced

Great video! I have the Ricoh GRIIIx. Got it because I got tired of carrying my big Nikon full frame and lenses with me to work just in case I wanted to do street photography after the business day. Changed my photography in a huge way. I carry the Ricoh with me everywhere and have taken so many of my favourite shots with it. I carry it in a fanny pack or sling over my shoulder now if I go out to shoot street with purpose over my Nikon as well. Only thing that prevents me from using it is inclement weather since it’s not weather sealed.
When it first was released, I noticed the Canon EOS M, read the reviews and waited until the price drop to purchase it. I bought the kit with the 22mm, 18-55mm, 90ex flash and the body. It was supposed to be used, but the only way I could tell someone had even looked at it was because it wasn't on default factory settings. I've been shooting it as one of my main cameras since 2014 and I love it. There are work arounds for many of the complaints and it is so light and a real joy to shoot.
For me it's Sony for the job and Fuji for the fun. I even shoot jpeg only most of the time in my private time because I wanna spend more time taking picture then editing them.
I know what you mean I do like to try carry one with me a lot of the time for me it me it is a Pen F and small prime 12 or 17 mm in a small shoulder bag
I recently got back into amateur photography after about 6 or 7 years of not touching my camera. I treated myself to a canon 5dmkii back in 2011, just before the birth of my first child. After a couple of years and more children, having to heft around the 5d, a couple of lenses and a flash was such a hassle that I stopped taking it out altogether.
A couple of months ago I sold all my Canon gear and bought a Fuji xt30ii. Now I carry it with me all the time and I've fallen back in love with taking photographs!

Had the 5D3 and sold it for same reason. Too big. I’m using a Sony A7III, smaller but lenses make it heavy and cumbersome. Was thinking about a FF point and shoot w/small lenses like A7CII, Fuji x100v, or even the Leica Q3 and others like it.

Interesting. I used to do a lot of photography back in the day with film and had my own darkroom. I fell out of it in the 80s but a couple of years ago, in an effort to rekindle my love for photography, I bought a DSLR and a selection of lenses. I had it all in a backpack but it was so heavy and cumbersome that I could never be bothered taking it out. Two days ago, before I watched this video, I sent it all off as a trade in and today I'm sitting waiting for a courier to bring my new Leica Q3. Can't wait to have a camera that I can take with me and the simplicity of not constantly swapping lenses. Great video, Thank you.

I have come to the same conclusion and settled for the Panasonic GX9 with the Leica Lumix 15mm f1.7 lens. This combination gives great results and is a take anywhere kit.

Same here-I ditched 15 years of accumulated Canon 5Ds and lenses for a Q2. For all those reasons. I’d like to add an M11 Monochrom and then likely done forever.

This is very true! It’s either my OM5 with the pancake lens, equivalent 40mm 1.7 or my 100v. Believe it or not the OM5 with that combo is slightly smaller than the 100v

The time went around to quite late at night and Robert said to Henri would you like to go around to the cafe on the corner for a last drink. Henri said if you wish, and put on his jacket. When Henri picked up his camera Robert said , will you be using that? Henri said probably not. Robert said , why take it then ? Agree having a small camera with you is far more valuable than a bigger more capable camera at home. Would love a Q, but.... So I carry a GRIII and it makes amazing images.

I only shoot with a pair of Leica M's and Ricoh GR3 and love only carrying one camera and one lens at a time when not shooting an event. If I have more gear with me means I have choices to make and by that time I've already missed the moment. Thanks

What this video mentions is a key reason I can't bring myself to buy a Leica Q camera, as much as I like what Leica has done. I draw a line where I can't put the camera in a jacket pocket. The X100V, Ricoh GR qualify to me, so some do some micro four thirds models depending which lens. I love the Ricoh GRIIIx, would have kept it if the AF worked well at night.
The Leica Q is just too big/heavy for me, even if my brain still tries to justify getting one from time to time. ;-)
I definitively want to "wear" the camera. But as you say all cameras are amazing now, and it's a matter what works for each of us. In my case I would never forget I am "armed" with a Ricoh GRIIIx just because it's in my pocket :-)

I know the camera is now out of production, but my EDC since a while is the Leica CL. Even smaller than the Q and operation is just great. Unfortunately for Leica the system was not an immediate success and as mentioned they discontinued it.
I’ve never used a CL but I know a few people who swear by them
I have some really nice Nikon gear which are still my main cameras for landscape and night photography, but the Q2 - and in a few weeks from now the Q3 - is always with me. The only camera with a strap and always at my side. it made me start street photography and I enjoy that little camera very much. Even if I only go out with a purse, its with me. Even in bad weather it takes beautiful B&W shots. I am always looking for interesting shots and whatever presents itsself, the Q is up to it as long as it does not need a telephoto lens.

I moved from the Canon EOS 1D series system to a Leica M system back about 12 years ago, and I’ve not looked back. These cameras go nearly everywhere I go…. (Except work… as I work in secured facilities that do not allow any type of outside photography).

I realised recently I had fallen out of love with my 2 mirrorless bodies, holy trinity lenses and a heap of primes, because I just didn't enjoy them in my hands in the street. What I did love was my Canon 7 rangefinder and tiny glass. I cashed all my digital kit in for a well known digital rangefinder brand and 3 primes and I now carry it everywhere. So convenient, discrete, perfect fit and feel...who needs an EVF and autofocus...many photographers probably, just not this one! Keep up the good work everyone!

Completely agree, taking a camera everywhere is the best way to improve. It's just like playing your drums or guitar every day. You start seeing things differently and noticing photo opportunities everywhere. Thanks for a great video!

Great video. Makes plenty of sense as the heavier traditional DSLR and lenses are just too much to haul around. I think personal choices of gear can change as time goes along. This has inspired me to lighten up my gear closet and get back out there and take some photos.

One aspect of the large vs small debate that I don’t think has been mentioned is that if you are shooting events (eg, weddings, conferences, corporate open houses, etc.) professionally with a large camera, you can see how people will glance at you, immediately figure out that you are the official photographer & instantly become more cooperative (eg, offer to get out of your way, tell you when something important is about to happen in the next room, offer to gather up groups for you, etc.).
Not once has anything like that ever happened when I have been shooting fly-on-the-wall style with my Pana G9ii or my phone.
And, FWIW, I just took a 7000 mi road trip (vacation) across the USA & the only cameras I brought were a couple of M4/3rds & a waterproof P&S and LOVED the freedom it gave me!
Another great informative video Paul, I think I may need to take heed on downsizing my equipment. I really only use my X100V. Proceeds could always go towards my Leica.

I love my Q2M along with my soft case of color filters. Paul when you want color what do you use? I'm thinking of the Q3 when it's announced. I sold my Q2 to get the Q2M & I miss color as well. The Q2 maxes out at ISO 6400 which is where the Q2M is just getting warmed up. The Q3 will have the M11 sensor which is a big upgrade in ISO performance
I actually use a Fuji XE4 for carry around colour and a Leica SL for actual colour photo shoots
SL2s paired w M lenses is quite the low light combo paired w q2 mono
I agree: keep only what you really use. For me, I sold my Fuji gear last week and went back to my Canon 5D and 6D. Size is not important.
It’s definitely more about what you love more than the actual size. It just so happens that most people see bigger cameras as a hassle to carry with them.

Totally agree. Traded a mountain of Nikon DSLR gear for a Sony A7c and never looked back; for precisely the reasons listed here. Threw a muffin 35/2.8 on there and now it hangs right beside my keys, ready to head out any time-- which it does every day 🤘

The Panasonic Lumix LX5 and LX7 both can't be beat for a fine small compact that take excellent photos and don't cost an arm and a leg like the Leicas, Fuji X100, and Richo GRIII.

I very much agree that downsizing your photographic equipment is not a drama, quite the contrary. However, we need to understand how much we actually want to downsize, because, obviously, some renunciation is inevitable in the end. I am content to leave the house with a camera and only one lens, but over time I have discovered that quality is the most important parameter for me. The files that come out of the GR III or the Fuji X100 V, although very good, are not the same ones produced by the Leica SL2-S with an Apo Asph. (just to give an example). We need to understand what we want most and act accordingly. Everyone will find their own magic recipe, and so will be happy to take lots of photos. Thank you for your videos, always clear, comprehensive and instructive.
Thanks so much for watching. I love my original SL. It’s heavy but I can make it small with an M mount lens on it. I do this for a living so for me it’s become less of a problem to carry something bigger around at times. However the Q2M comes out with me all the time rather than just when I intend to take photos.
Aside from a large physical camera and lens setup, I struggle with a large RAW file size out of my Sony A7R4 61mp sensor. So I leave that camera home most of the time, and it’s looking at a new home. But keeping my GR3x, Leica CL w/Voigtlander and L mount Leica lenses, and my Sony A7R3 with Zeiss Loxia lenses.. my sensor sweet spot is max - 47mp.

I am an Olympus fan so all my cameras are comparably small and light, even the recent OM-1. Don’t want to get rid of any of my gear because I might regret it later, maybe I am also a bit of a collector…
Recently I started to just throw my Pen Mini E-PM1 into the bag I take to work with just three small primes. Love the simplicity and still astounding image quality of this old entry level camera and it looks gorgeous… the smartphone is always with me and while it’s a great backup camera, I simply don’t enjoy shooting with it that much. Now I also start to shoot with film again, let’s see where this takes me. 🙏

For walking around, my Olympus E-M10 II with a small 17mm prime is perfect. And the flip screen allows me to be fairly discreet and stealthy 👍 Not all of us can afford Leica branded equipment.

So true! I've had a Ricoh GR since 2005 when the first digital version arrived. I now have the GRiii AND GRiiiX while all the time since then having a bag with a DSLR/Mirrorless setup. The point is though that the GR is ALWAYS in my pocket, door pocket of the car, dashboard of the campervan etc etc even when the R6 is tucked safely away. Its so much fun to use as well as portable and I capture so many more great shots with it simply because its always right at hand everywhere I go. Quite tempted by a Q2M now which is how I found your excellent channel, but actually worried its a little too big to be an everyday carry.

You are allover-rightyright! Leica Monochrome is fine but toooo cher (expensive) for my economising. And even a Leica isn't very small (the lenses!). Better is a camera with a foldout lense - only this gear you can 'store' smoothly, e.g. in your pocket. This might be even a Plaubel Makina 67, or a Voigtlaender Vitessa from the 1950s, a Kodak Retina from the 1930s, and others... In former days, I was fond of 18/24mm-film-Olympus Pen F, Olympus OM-1 and Pentax MX/ME: fine lenses but nicely short, small, smart. Today, I got a 1958 Voigtlaender VITO for 25 euros and it makes lots of fun. Nikon pro gear does the rest;-)))

I have several Fuji cameras and currently i like using the X-S20 (small) with small sigma 18-50 or small fuji primes a lot when there is a need for color photos (like family vacation). On the other hand i love the old X-Pro1 as my black and white camera (most of the time, but it can do color ;-) ) - the X-Pro1 paired with the small fuji primes is so freeing. But would love to strip down the equipment more. (for professional use is have the big X-H2S and X-T4 with the f1.4 primes. Would love to have a Q2 but I love 35mm so much. Perhaps the Q2 monochrome would be the ultimative camera i am seeking for (i want to have a super reduced camera with the feeling to have finally arrived)
I’m also a Fuji shooter. The Q2 Monochrom is a different beast and some struggle with it as it hasn’t got the snappy AF of the Fuji’s. I have an XH2 and XE4. I’m invested in Fuji. I really believe with the newest cameras they have really hit a sweet spot. I did have the X100V but I just had too many cameras that do pretty much the same thing. The XE4 is so similar.

I am a gal, retired, 66 years old and my tote about camera is a Mamiya RB67 Pro SD and my favorite lens is a Mamiya K/L 65mm f/4.0. I do have digital equipment, but that is used for specific occasions where digital is more appropriate than film. My film backs are the motorized 6 x 8, and I always carry both color and B&W.
So often I hear amateur and professional photographers advocating for the smallest lightest kit. Many say they are getting on in years so the less weight the better and these are people younger than I am. I admit that schlepping my RB67 takes considerable effort, but I can do it, even here in rural Texas where Summer is about to hit with temperatures peaking at or somewhat above 100°F / 38°C.
Whether young or old, Carry what works for your photography. For me, I love my RB, even if it's like carrying a load of bricks everywhere. My doctor likes how I exercise through my photography and stay healthy. Use it or lose it.
Good for you!! I had the RB67 once upon a time. Loved that camera. However I’m not the tallest and a waist level finder is a big no for me
Great philosophy Paul. I always shot with Nikon - big lenses - extra gear - it was a chore to go out. About 4 years ago I bought my first Leica. During that time I barely used my Nikon at all. I am now so simple - I have a Leica M10 Monochrom (Because that is what I love) with the smallest lenses - with vintage lenses because I like that look. I have never enjoyed photography as much as I do now. I even got a Leica iiif - it is even smaller and my true carry around for family events etc. I am a huge believer the smaller the better - No matter what brand you shoot. The key is to have it with you and easy to get out and use.

Paul...I couldn't agree with you more. I sold the majority of my big DSLRs and lens. I take my Leica Q2 with me everywhere and take lovely candid images all the time. In fact it forces one to really see their surrounded in a different perspective--a creative one. I do have the Leica SL2 and fuji XT4. At times both of those kits can be bulky especially the leica with the added weight. The only time I consciously reach for those cameras is when I am shooting subject in motion. So glad you have found the camera that works well for you. Yes I also reach for those more bulky cameras for shoots. When it’s an actual shoot. But when I just want to be ready in the moment I carry something much smaller. Either the Q2M or my M6.

Totally agree that smallness isn't an absolute goal because a camera has to have a "presence" that you interact with to make settings and human hands didn't get smaller just because the digital age arrived!

@@paulreidphotography yes I did have a bit of a meltdown, the price is crazy, but in black it is light and it takes really great black and white shots in the high contrast black and white mode. I do think though that while I wouldn’t have a colour Q2, the Monochrom is a different beast as the sensor gets to see the light it needs. BTW… the photos of your better half were great and that’s what it’s all about.

When I was at college and university I had a tiny keyring-sized digital camera, it was about 2.5" * 1.75" * 1" it was so useful for just recording things for my art studies as reference the images weren't for blowing up and printing to put on the wall but it was invaluable for the purpose I needed it for! I will have to dig it out it is probably in the back of a drawer somewhere.

Expected to see stuff you caught in the every day moment, to illustrate your story with less equipment. Disappointment here. And why get rid of good lenses? Last year I shot a big series in Munich's graveyards, all with a NIKON 2,8/70-200mm zoom. Heavy? Yes. And so what? Got exactly the results I wanted, was definitely worth the extra kilo.

I've made a lot of expensive mistakes. I sat out the digital era until I purchased a Fuji X-E2. It was fun to use, and I took it everywhere. Then, I "upgraded" to an X-Pro-2. It was "better" but I found it cumbersome and clumsy. So I sold it (and all those lovely Fuji lenses) and got a Canon R6 with the 24-105 f/4. It's a great camera, but even more cumbersome and clumsy. It's not as much fun, and I'm starting to feel like photography is a chore. I'd love a Q3, but it's beyond my budget. I'd love an X100V, but they seem to be backordered until the end of time. 😞
So I think it’s a real shame what happened with the X100V. It’s a great camera but they just aren’t getting manufactured to the demand. I would think the next X100 may be worth waiting on. It can’t be that far off
@@paulreidphotographyFuji is a frustrating brand. Fantastic glass, but the bodies... Tiny, gimmicky, and their pace of development is slow and haphazard. There are piles of previous models (X-Pro 3 and X'T4's are still available new 3 years on from release) and a camera people actually want (like the X-100V) is probably never to be seen again. I'm tired of waiting, but equally tired of settling for flawed products that don't engage me. The photography world seems bent on forcing their ever dwindling consumer base into a costly spiral of buy, complain, replace... That being said, if it wasn't for the prohibitive price, I'd be all over Leica. They have a plan and they stick to it... for a price.

My Q2 is attached to me now while my Z7 gets occasional outings. I’m pondering selling all my Nikon gear and getting a Leica M11 but have a concern about manual focus ( my eyes aren’t very good even with glasses)
It would be good to get the loan of an M mount camera first to see if it’s suitable for you

I’ve never tried the X100, but I have had several Fujis with their excellent prime lenses for travel (X-T1 then X-Pro2). After a few years, I realized that I prefer using a zoom for travel. I found the Fuji 18-55 to have excellent IQ, but a bit too bulky for my needs. I switched to the Nikon Zfc + 16-50 lens and couldn’t be happier. It is a feather-weight combo that you can carry all day long and hardly notice it’s there. In addition to the “retro controls, an articulating screen for low shots and extended long exposure settings (up to 900s). The 20MP BSI sensor provide excellent IQ. Since purchasing it, Nikon has introduced several fast primes, which are also very small and light. For low light situations, I bring along the 23/1.7 for a 35mm EFL. I have other Nikons (the Z6ii for landscape and astro and the Z8 for birds and other wildlife), but the Zfc is the one I always have with me.

Do what is downsizing? Depends on the person. I know I enjoy collecting so me cameras so hv an array of Olympus Analog and Leica analog. I envision just ‘passing it along’… nothing major $ wise… old cameras, especially Olympus are pretty cheap but sure hv quality

Just bought a Nikon Z50 :) :) :) SMALL and I want to carry it everywhere!!!!!!!!!! Great IQ :) :) I will not get rid of my FF Kit (the IQ is even better)!!!!!!! But we all need something to get those creative juices running thru our veins :) Im 71yo

It’s game changer because then you have the camera in hand balanced perfectly ready to fire at will.
Although I have several DSLR cameras both full and cropped sensors and several Sony mirrorless, my main camera now is my iPhone 12 (update to the 15 next month). For my chosen genres and style it is perfect. The iPhone to me is first and foremost a camera. I love it's limitations which cause me to be even more creative.

Word! Went from Nikon D850 with numerous lenses to fuji XT4 and now to Fuji X-pro1 + xt1 in 10 years. Never been more happier than with this current setup. X-pro1 for monochrome work which is 80%. Xt1 for those rainy days. Only bringing one camera and one lens regardless of situation and that is such relief.

I had my Sony A9/Zeiss 35mm 1.4 with a battery grip stolen. I still had my a6500 laying around and wow being able to put it my pocket is nice. I miss the utility but being able to walk around, point then shoot is just so relaxing.

I have a cheap, completely plastic point-and-shoot film camera I like to take with me on bike rides. At 138 grams, it's a hollow plastic box that I can slip into my jersey pocket without it bothering me when I ride. I do sometimes like to bring my larger Fuji digital camera with me, but then I need to plan my ride around carrying a backpack with me.
Yeah likewise sometimes I do carry a large camera but only for a shoot
I love smaller and lighter cameras for everyday use. I do have a Q2 but tend to only carry that on specific occasions. My favourite daily carry cameras are M4/3, specifically the Lumix GX80, G7 and Olympus E-M1 MkII. During my working day mainly in a vehicle there’s much to be said for the G7 which has as good a grip as the Olympus but is much lighter, matched to the lovely compact Lumix 14-140 ten times zoom.
I almost always have a dedicated camera with me but find a smartphone camera has its place also, especially for copying documents, taking images of, say, engine components to aid reassembly or future reference. They all have their place and I enjoy using them all.

Just use your smartphone or a compact camera.

My street axe is usually my Fujifilm X-E2 with the Fujinon 27mm pancake. Always with me, even when just going to the corner grocery, feels like I’m carrying nothing. 👌

I made the mistake of selling my Fujifilm cameras to get a Nikon Z6 and a 4x5 camera. Over this fall and winter I took very few photos and almost quit. I'm now trying to figure out how to get back to a smaller set up but the Z6 used prices and even the lenses aren't worth very much. I did sell my 4x5 to get a Pentax 67 and am taking it out on walks and am using it more than I did the 4x5. I completely agree that the choice camera makes a big difference in how much you use it.

Don't give up too easily on your Z6. I just came back from some travels where I would have preferred to have carried my old Leica Q, but I was worried about theft and security (for good reason, it turned out). So I brought my Z6 and the little Nikon 28mm f/2.8 'muffin' lens. Together they weren't much bigger than the Q and cost FAR less. And the picture quality was quite spectacular.
Z6 and a small prime is just as portable and pretty much equal on image quality as a Q
I use a Lumix LX-15 compact for a carry anywhere camera. I also have a couple of m4/3 cameras when I need a light-ish camera but the photography requires interchangeable lenses. And then I also have my Canon dslr for when I am on photography only outings. I only buy used from reputable outlets like mpb or WEX as this has allowed me to purchase these different cameras for particular photo purposes.

You are absolutely right. Great gear makes you go out shooting, especially if it's a light carry. I sold most of my equipment, including the mighty but super-heavy 24-90 Emarit. I bought an '81 M4P with a Summicron 35M and a Color Skopar 35mm, which makes the camera pocketable without the hood. HP5 at ISO 800 for the daily stuff, DoubleX for faces, and Delta 100 for the high-resolving B&W experience are all I need.
I can’t deny that I would love a film M mount camera
You only validated my behavior. I tend to have either the M10-R or CL when I go out. The selection will vary with where I am going

That’s great!!! Some people are also happy to carry medium format cameras everywhere. The majority however would leave something like this at home if they were going to the shops for milk
My EDC camera is an old EOS M with its kit lens. Otherwise I choose one of four different DSLRs for when I have something specific in mind that the EOS M just can't do (night, wildlife etc.).

You're so right. You bring back this "Art of photography" as it was, through real film photos.
As you already said it well, it is the "thought process" behind the camera.
But, the subject in front brings it's artistic reason to be there, in the lens. The "conversation" in between the photographer and the subjects is "printed", and the "box translater" is your tool, the camera, and the way you communicate with.
I really like your beach, and the light that comes from the sand/warer.
The subject becomes "anonymous" as we only see just enoughnto recognize "anyone" you wish to be on this beach.
It is as, this photo propose you to be there, at her place, like an invitation.
Her movement makes the photo "dynamic", opposed to "static landscape".

I’m looking for something, affordable and small that I can keep on me wherever I go, yes I have the Fuji Xt3 which is quite small considering but even that or similar you can’t carry everywhere. I had the Canon G7 X, I won it soon after it’s release date I think it was but I wasn’t about to check that out, that camera got me interests in “proper” photography, not just the snapshots I’d been taking up until then, great camera, perfect size to just stick in your jacket, even got it in my jeans pocket too, I’d love something like that but being on such a tight budget it’s difficult but I’m saving for something like it.
It’s a pity the cost of the older Fuji x100 series has gone so high as even the first and original x100 is a great option. Unfortunately even that is now over priced

Great video! I have the Ricoh GRIIIx. Got it because I got tired of carrying my big Nikon full frame and lenses with me to work just in case I wanted to do street photography after the business day. Changed my photography in a huge way. I carry the Ricoh with me everywhere and have taken so many of my favourite shots with it. I carry it in a fanny pack or sling over my shoulder now if I go out to shoot street with purpose over my Nikon as well. Only thing that prevents me from using it is inclement weather since it’s not weather sealed.

When it first was released, I noticed the Canon EOS M, read the reviews and waited until the price drop to purchase it. I bought the kit with the 22mm, 18-55mm, 90ex flash and the body. It was supposed to be used, but the only way I could tell someone had even looked at it was because it wasn't on default factory settings. I've been shooting it as one of my main cameras since 2014 and I love it. There are work arounds for many of the complaints and it is so light and a real joy to shoot.
I think there’s also something nice about owning your camera and using it for years.
For me it's Sony for the job and Fuji for the fun.
I even shoot jpeg only most of the time in my private time because I wanna spend more time taking picture then editing them.
There’s a bunch of times I looked at the Fuji jpgs and said well my works already done

As a Sony shooter, I picked up a used Sony a6400. It’s small enough to take wherever I go.
I had a go with one of those not long ago and took some great shots on it
