Minus the turmeric, this is also called Sooji (Semolina) Halwa in the northern parts of India. The proportions are fixed.. for 1 cup semolina, 1/2 cup ghee, 3/4 to 1 cup sugar, and 2 cups water (or 1 cup water and 1 cup milk)!

Amazing! You're mother in law must love you! Also NEVER use ready ground spices for indian cooking. Always grind then yourself if you can. The only spices you can get away with not ground are turmeric, cinnamon and am star anise as they take a great deal of time to grind.

It's Kesari in Tamil and sooji ka halwa in Hindi, one of the easiest Indian dessert recipes. And desserts are meant to be sweet so sugar shouldn't be constrained. Indian sweets are sweeter and indulgence, we all like it that way and eaten on a occasion not on a regular basis. Sooji ka halwa wouldn't be that sweet comparing to any other Indian sweets.

In maharashtra (western India) we use milk instead of water and no turmeric. It's called shira. And when offer to God added banana.
