    good info... except that lead acid batteries last much longer than "every year or two". Whether a lead acid car battery, or a lead acid power backup battery for the home, their warranties are for many years, and they last 5-10 years.

    • @Evcustom
      @Evcustom  Рік тому +2

      You’d be mistaken for the lead acid battery’s that are commonly found in E-bikes, many are a maximum of 250-400 charge cycles depending on how good you take case of your battery’s, 99% of them are very cheaply made in china, if you recharge once a day your batteries are at the end of their life by a year. Car batteries are under much less load vs e-bike batteries (only when you first start it is higher demand) less high discharge applications means your batteries last longer same with solar applications that are backup, they only get used not as often.

    • @Evcustom
      @Evcustom  Рік тому +2

      Lead acid batteries also don’t like being fully discharged often, lot of e-bike riders who use lead acid drain them completely often or leave them undercharged over winter resulting in very short lifespan. Lithium can stay at lower voltage much easier without hurting it.

    • @chrissmith2114

      @@Evcustom A Li-Ion battery will be damaged if left drained, and also gets damaged if fast charged or regularly charged to over 80%... It is not only Lead acid that need proper care, you can leave a lead acid plugged into a smart charger 24/7/365 and not damage it, keeping a Li-Ion battery fully charged can cause it to either fail or set on fire.

    @4:42 if you have a basic bms you absolutely MUST leave the charger on for a period AFTER the light turns green. This is the ONLY time the bms can perform maintenance on cell balance. If you let it go too long without letting the bms do balance maintenance then the bms will eventually shut to port early and the light will turn green but no maintenance is being done, so it gets worst with time not better.
    If it gets that far out of balance you need to open the battery and manually balance it, then periodically let the bms have time to perform maintenance.
    To test the battery without opening it you need a multimeter and charger. The charger should slowly climb to until it reaches peak charge, then turn green. If it jumps up the last few volts instantly then the bms closed the port.
    Once the battery is balanced once, periodically let it go until the light turns green and then let it continue until voltage is 0.1v-0.3v higher (whatever the charger open voltage is). let it continue for at least an hour. It will trickle in charge at a rate the bleed resistors can bleed off the cells will be saturated so even when you unplug it will continue to balance if needed because the cells wont sag.
    If the battery will not be used, discharge it after its balanced.

    • @Evcustom
      @Evcustom  Рік тому +2

      Yes, you are right, most cheapo BMS units do not have any active balancing or any kind of balancing during charging until the batteries are full. As mentioned in the video it is important to use a good quality bms for safety reasons. Majority of batteries when newly built properly will not go out of balance for quite a while if they are matched properly internal resistance wise, having a cheapo bms compensate for a poorly built out of balance battery is a very dangerous thing to do, those bleed off resistors as you mentioned can actually overheat if it’s out balance enough potentially causing a fire especially if it’s trying to balance dead cell groups or burner cells. For the majority of people that are not familiar with batteries it shouldn’t be recommended in my opinion to leave on the charger for long periods, especially if you don’t know what bms if any your battery has installed. wouldn’t trust cheapo bms units to prevent potential dangerous overcharging conditions anyhow, to risky unless you know what your doing or monitoring your battery charge. The time from when the light turns green to when your realize it’s green should be enough time for a healthy battery to remain balanced ok with the bms you mentioned. Would like to make a battery safety video in future more catering to advanced users and builders/businesses, your point would be gone into then. Appreciate the feedback!

    • @imho7250
      @imho7250 Рік тому +2

      @@Evcustom, the only bms that doesn’t need to be fully charged is a smart bms that you can tell it to balance wherever it is. I have an ant BMS which can bleed at about 0.1a so it’s about 3x faster than the average BMS you will find in any non-bluetooth bms. And active balance is ok if you have full control over the voltage its starts balancing.
      But 90% of the batteries even from good manufacturers need to be charged for some time after the light turns green, and that’s assuming the battery is nearly balanced and the charger has the standard taper. I have a 5s1p tool battery with a 1a charger but zero taper so it never will enter balancing maintenance no matter how good I manually balanced it. The charger taper is mandatory. Lol
      I think Bolton bikes also did a video explaining that you MUST charge for a while After the light turns green but he didn’t show how to verify it’s getting balanced and not just tripping the BMS.
      Unfortunately many don’t understand this basic concept because we are taught “don’t overcharge”, “don’t charge to 100%”.
      If every battery had a jk bms then life would be easier. Lol

    • @Evcustom
      @Evcustom  Рік тому +1

      I run an e-bike business, the lead acid batteries that come stock in e-bikes do only last that long, the automotive sector is completely different. If you look at how many deep charge cycles they are good for it’s usually between 250-500, (usually a lot less with the ones found in e-bikes) if you daily drive your e-bike the batteries will be dead within a year or 2, with e-bikes higher constant discharge demands they simply do not last anywhere near as long in e-bikes.

    I’m a little shook that batteries can randomly catch fire like that.
    I have a Grade A LG 21700 cells 52v 45amps.
    My battery heats up during use when I throttle a lot. But I’ve since recently reduced the amps on the controller to take in 35amps instead. And noticed that the heat isn’t much plus I get more range too.
    But is it okay to run a 52v battery with a 48v controller?
    My current controller is a Sinewave Sabvoton. Programmable from 36v up to 72v
    ANY info would be appreciated

    • @Evcustom
      @Evcustom  Рік тому

      Hey yes, if your controller is compatible you can easily run a different voltage battery, I know for Sabvoton they are programable so you may need to change the settings in the app for battery low volt and high volt, but it’ll probably automatically adjust. for the heating up you describe you should really try to limit the amount that your battery is heating, your not only wasting energy/range in heat loss but it’s also possibly not good for your batteries depending on how warm they are getting. It’s also possible the nickel used to weld your battery together is not sufficient for that amount of amps you are pulling

    • @Evcustom

      Most of the fires with electric cars are gonna be because of external physical damages. Some because of failures in software/charging problems. Teslas are cell level fused batteries, not only that but also all good quality cylindrical li-on cells have an internal fuse called a “CID” Very rare for a battery to short randomly.

C02 is not a problem since it is only 0.04% of the air around us and is a heavy gas which lies close to the ground for plant life. We need more not less!
