1:30 Thanks for the warning. Extreme pressure leaks can also cut you. Like with diesel, gasoline direct injection, and high pressure gas. Glad you didn't get hurt worse. BTW, traction control is so awesome. I hope to have a an ECU setup that can do that some day.
Hey Steve, great info as usual, and you're the best because nobody with your weath of knowledge rarely shares anything and that's fantastic, but what I've done is use a few milliseconds of fuel cut on the shifts, and it helps a lot to calm things down, I do mostly small fragile engines and hard ignition cuts will break parts so I avoid that, the other option is if you've got an electronic throttle you can use that in conjunction with timing but the ethottle can nearly be too slow with turbos because the response of the ethottle is very non linear, so heaps of things are going all on at the same time, ha ha but that leads to hours of fun, most of what I do is circuit cars with sequential gearboxes on road surfaces which are vastly different to a prepared drag strip, but if you blast the tyres off of those you're probably going backwards into a ditch so you're having a bad day not a bad time slip
I really appreciate you making this video Steve. I finally got my single turbo 5.3 1990 GMC to properly make boost, and rev, and it just blows the tires off. It's my daily, and I'm not rich enough to buy fresh drag radials every couple of months, so I have Cooper Cobras on it for daily driving. NT555's for the weekend. This knowledge will help me make two tunes for more awesomeness. Spinning ain't winning.
Bragging rights are important. Roswell to Springfield is a cakewalk! ;) I just did Montgomery AL to Green Bay WI and back to Montgomery in 2 days. Now that's a haul! Good info on the traction control.
That looks like a classic freezer burn. Basically BIG OUCHIE. PSA people. Rapidly expanding gasses get cold. Steve's leg is why you don't stick your hand in the CO2 extingusher when you're using it to chill beers.
Had a bottle blow off when the sunshine got to it in NC. The awning shadow moved as the day went on, and it was 104 in the shade. My Crew Chief grabbed for it and got his hand burned. Bad deal, but he's OK.
That's awesome I never knew I could use my 4l80e with holley as a traction control too...obviously I'm not versed enough in tuning to make all them changes but it's something I could start playing with eventually
Love this kind of tinkering. I would be adding an accel sensor to that bad boy and dial the tune with G and time. Oh yeah, if I was eligible to win the Billy Bad Boy, I’d be emptying my wallet on merch. Awesome content Steve, thank you.
Very cool man. I used nitrous to run the 6.0 heads up index. Spraying for one second off the line to run dead on. I would have to adjust the time it was on, with a timer, to make it run the number. I went 3, 6.001 in one race. It worked well until the sun went down. Then it was too fast to use the nitrous. We had it figured out pretty good with that car
Steves experience with nitrous so far is partially why I never messed with it. Like most HP adders it can be dangerous and things like a stuck solenoid or faulty relay may have you playing 52 card pickup with the intake system😂. Plus you gotta constantly refill the bottles if you use it a lot. Glad you didnt get hurt too bad stay safe out there. I personally would like to see Steve and Kyle testing with some nitromethane to see how much it affects spool and whatnot.
That is excellent Steve tech! Explained very well, clear with practical examples. I know you probably spent some good time to do that video, so thank you! Would love to enter thw comp bit being outside the US pretty sure im not eligible.
Dude sorry bout your leg. Keep that battle scar moist. Sulvadein (cant spell) worked for me. Keep it moist, wrap it up, the moist will help not scab and minimal scar.also when its super moist the sulvadein will not allow bandages to stick to the womb. Once the skin is healed over, use a quality coconut creme. Blessings
So I just learned today that Steve really is the master engine builder. I seen he designed and built a 16 cylinder quad turbo 5007hp, 3757tq engine for a super car called the Devel Sixteen. Internet says only one built but you can order one for $2 million. 0 to 60 in 1.8 seconds with top speed of 348mph. Now I gotta go see if theres a video lol
Never knew that. But knew the car. Awesome to know now. I remember Steve and Tony bishof(BES) competed in a magazine years ago. I know Tony. But Steve is a hell of a engine builder. One of the best!
That car is not for sale, and at the rate it's going, it probably never will be. The guys who funded it seem to have lost interest. The engine is pretty sick though, even though they haven't actually installed it into even one single car. Don't hold your breath on it happening. They will have to develop a transmission that can handle the power, and do what they want it to do, which is probably not going to happen.
We always weigh the bottles after each run to see how much nitrous volume you may have left. Also I'd suggest not purging into the motor when in idle. Better to rev up 1500/2500 rpm and hit it. Safer
Yes it is like frost bite but it actually burns with that close just be glad the bottle was not upside down then you would got a lot severer burn/frost bite it boils at -127 deg. Glad your ok. Be safe and carefull
Tom complaining about how hard he had to work just makes it better! He chose his horse in that race. Congrats on another win! I got me a few entries for that Trailblazer so I'm glad to see it's a champion, now if my poster and stuff ever ship from Bradenton I'm set. (I'm sure the USPS is the issue, not on your end but it still shows as not picked up yet).
@@hazmatt66 Dang, I ordered on 10/2 and I just checked it still says pre shipment, paperwork received. Did yours ship from Bradenton? Mine has always shipped from Michigan before as far as I know. I might have to reorder to make sure I get a signed poster, I doubt they will last long.

I find this amazing, that you can run 7.30ish, with (if memory serves) 1.9iish 60 foot times. that thing must accelerate like a beast. I had a long bed square body chevy with a 460ci BBC, running a Qjet carb, & 3.08 gears that would turn 1.9 60 foot times, and it would only put down a 8.6 @ 78MPH. I suppose what I'm saying is, you've proved to me that boost & a good controller is the answer to getting the most our of your rig.
yeah, should be cleaned, dressed properly and re-done on schedule or it will never heal right and possibly keep opening up. that's near levels of needing skin graft to not have a huge scar. likely sealed off for showering, until it heals to mostly closed small area.
And you beat Tom Bailey which got me to buy a shirt on the far fetched chance that I might get to win a Trailblazer . Always wanted a Trailblazer , most because of the 4200 6 banger but they aren't perfect either
For anyone spraying bigger kits of nitrous you DO NOT want to EVER put it on the RevLimiter unless you want your scoop to look like a Falcon 9 launch. In fact your system should always be set up where the nitrous shuts off BEFORE your RevLimit RPM setting. Use timing retards and/or if you have a Davis Technologies box, there is a Smart Drop option where it has settings to drop 1-4 cylinders but never the same cylinder twice if the timing retard isn't enough to correct. With nitrous a setting of 1 is fine & will stop the tire enough for correction unless you are stupid far off your curve settings. I've sprayed roughly 1,500hp (5,500 PPH) of nitrous in multiple cars for over a decade so have learned what & what not to do to keep engines managed, alive, & safe. It's NOT scary & is safe if you handle properly & pay attention to what you are doing.
I believe that for both Steve and Bailey must take a lot more joy from taking these relative turds and making them fast with very few resources and time than perfecting and over-perfecting their main racers to shave 0,1 or 0,05s here and there. Using all the knowledge without the peer pressure.
I really enjoyed this video with all the tech that was awesome thank you for sharing. Can only hope that I can win this truck so I can try to enter the Rocky mountain drag and drive next year with it.
If you had a bottle heating blanket, wouldn't that minimize the pressure/volume drop, as the bottle empties? I'm thinking that if the aluminum bottle is at a consistent 100 degrees, that would cause much more evaporation within the bottle, that would create a more stable/consistent pressure in the bottle, during release. To my mind, what's happening is when you release the NO2, the bottle immediately cools, which reduces the evaporation rate within the bottle, therefore the pressure drops quicker, which inhibits the volume of liquid NO2 that gets pushed out of the bottle. I really think a bottle blanket would virtually eliminate many of the issues you were seeing as a result of using nitrous as an assist.
