Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I: Venerated as Messiah by Rastafarians
🇪🇹 When Ras Tafari Makonnen was crowned Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia in 1930, little did he know that he would be venerated as a Messiah by followers of an emerging spiritual & cultural movement from Jamaica.
🇯🇲 Rastafarianism, named after the title of “Ras” (Prince) & Selassie’s birth name “Tafari“, advocated for Pan-Africanism, spiritual enlightenment, and a return to African heritage. Rastafaris venerate Selassie as the reincarnation of Jesus who would bring about the long-awaited return to Africa and the liberation of the black peoples from colonial oppression.
Many cite a prophecy made in the 1920s by American political activist Marcus Garvey (1887-1940) that a Black king would be crowned in Africa as the origin of Rastafarians’ divine worship of Selassie: “Look to Africa, when a black king shall be crowned, for the day of deliverance is at hand.”
👑 Emperor Selassie’s coronation in November 1930 was not just a national celebration but also a significant statement of Ethiopia’s (then called “Abyssinia”) ancient monarchy and its continuity in the face of European colonization efforts in Africa. The ceremony featured ornate rituals of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, complete with elaborate robes, crowns, and scepters.
It was attended by royals & digitaries, including the Duke of Gloucester (Prince Henry) and Prince Fernando of Savoy (Prince of Udine & future Duke of Genoa) 🇮🇹 Interestingly, Italy, under Mussolini’s charge, would invade Ethiopia less than five years later in 1935.
