It does cost money - $20 for base game and another $20 for Pets... however, the gaming client named Steam often has sales on the franchise. Mediafire and Adfly are what a lot of content creators use to distribute their files, and they can pose a risk quite often. I fight it with a few different programs but have had a couple of instances where ransomware crept onto my system. If you stay away from Custom Content, you'll not need to worry about viruses.

Raymond Equestrian has great stuff as well but they use adfly so make sure you have something to prevent adware and spyware attacks. Equus. From what I understand, half of the community desired more role play, and half the community desired to just show and edit photos. One is more of a RPG forum and the other is the same ol' equus. No idea who's leading what.
