HISTORY OF CORONATIONS | coronation of Charles III and Camilla | what will happen at the coronation

- As the coronation of King Charles III approaches, let’s take a look back at how this ancient ceremony has played out in England and Scotland over the past thousand years and ask why are coronations important, what will happen at the coronation and conversely, what won't happen at the coronation? This video from History Calling will look at the purpose of coronations, historically and in modern times and at all the constituent parts of the ceremony, from the procession to Westminster Abbey and within it, the recognition, the coronation oath (and how it has changed over the years), the anointing with holy oil and the actual moment of crowing in St Edward’s Chair, commonly called the coronation chair using St Edward’s Crown and sitting atop the Scottish Stone of Scone aka, the Stone of Destiny. We’ll also look at how a Queen consort is crowned, the practice of paying homage to the new monarch, the procession back to the Buckingham Palace, the appearance on Buckingham Palace’s balcony (which is quite a new innovation) and the other events held on or around coronation day. In the past these would have included a coronation banquet, but that practice was discontinued in the 1800s for reasons which I’ll explain. Now we have things like coronation tours, coronation concerts and coronation broadcasts. So sit back and relax, as I take you everything you need to know about why and how a monarch is crowned. I’ll also discuss some specific past events, including the coronation of William IV, the coronation of Queen Victoria, the coronation of George V, the coronation of George VI and the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953.

When my Yorkie Dog saw the weather on the news he became concerned for you.
Not to worry. The weather here is pretty decent (by NI standards at least).
This is a good question. Because it's basically all about do we want the Monarchy to spend even more money that's not necessary if they rule both countries.
@Paul Fellows or even owr Willy fe Dundee.
No, we are a United Kingdom!
As an uninvolved American it's always interesting to see the pomp and grandeur that surrounds the monarch. I so look forward to your videos every week!
Thanks Suzanne. I likewise quite enjoy seeing how the US President is treated (though I'm glad I wasn't in Belfast a couple of weeks ago when he was visiting, as I'm sure all the security made it a nightmare).
@@HistoryCalling Biden is a nightmare. What ever country he stumbles into.
If you have 2 coronations, the Northern Irish and the Welsh may start to get antsy. And then what about the commonwealth? Best to leave it at one, particularly if the public isn't thrilled about the cost
I'm now trying to imagine what a Northern Irish coronation would look like. The security alone would be a nightmare.
Hey there sarah! I came across your comment and I just had to reach out and say hi. Your perspective really caught my attention and I would love to get to know you better. Would you be interested in chatting sometime? Looking forward to hearing back from you!
@@morrisonscott702 Love the creepy old man vibe. Keep it up.
I can't help but wonder how many people have a problem with lack of bathroom breaks.
As usual very informative. Thank you.
A lot I would say. There are loos and loo breaks nowadays of course, but I bet some very unpleasant things happened in centuries gone by.
@@HistoryCalling exactly what I was thinking xx
With all due respect, I wouldn’t necessarily call us “uninvolved”. We were monarchists at one point in our history; people here seldom remember this. Our last monarch was His Majesty King George III. And, contrary to popular belief, he was actually a wonderful king who loved his American subjects very much. So much love had the Crown for it’s British-American colonials that they sent us over 20,000 of their best troops to protect us from incessant and often very brutal French and Algonquian raids, which killed countless Americans. But that’s another can of worms, I reckon.
If you ask me, I think a strong, humble monarchy would do this broad land quite good. As historian Charles Coulombe rightly pointed out, we certainly do not deserve it. The democracy craze has gone on long enough.
“In Hell there is democracy; in Heaven there is a kingdom.”
- Saint John of Kronstadt.
Nobody does pomp and circumstance like the British. It should be fun to watch.
That's true. We have become experts at it 😅
Every Friday is better also because of your channel and videos. It is my among my very favorites. Watching from Bulgaria 😊Thank you for your excellent content, hard work and dedication 💐
Thanks Veronika. I've never had a Bulgarian viewer make themselves known to me before, so I'm delighted to have you :-)
King Phillipe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium are confirmed to be attending Charles' coronation so this time there will be multiple monarchs. I guess that's a first?
I don't know 100% if it'll be the first time, but it seems to be unusual.
@@HistoryCalling I just read it is the first time in 900 years. The King and Queen of Spain, the Netherlands, and the King of Sweden are attending as well.
That makes it all the more historically significant then, which I quite like :-)
@@HistoryCalling it seems a lot of firsts or historically important changes. Like the Pope sending a piece of the cross. And a representative of Sinn Fein attending. I don't know anything about the history of Sinn Fein but I read it is a significant thing that they are attending.
I saw the film of Elizabeth’s the second on the History Channel last month. She looked beautiful. All the scents of the anointed oils you mentioned sound like aromatherapy. I’ll watch clips of the coronation in the news next week.
Have a lovely weekend.
Yes, she was certainly a stunner. It must have been an amazing day to witness. Have a lovely weekend too.
Wonderful video! I find the evolution of such ancient rituals absolutely fascinating, and am quite partial to the deep symbolism involved (probably the recovering Catholic in me!)
I was interested to learn that the Australian man some claim is the 'true King' will be involved in the ceremony (holding the golden Spurs I believe). Surely there's no longer a need to show a monarch has the support of rival heirs?
Thanks Susanna. I hadn't heard about the Australian man, but it sounds very interesting.
I’m excited about the Coronation. I’m American, but love The BRF!!! ❤❤ 👑 👑🎺🎺🎺⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️🤴🏼🫅🏼💂🏻♀️💂🏻♀️💂🏻♀️💂🏻♀️
I'm looking forward to it too :-)
Thank you for this information. I am looking forward to the coronation and I hope that it goes off perfectly and not full of surprises like Victoria's coronation in 1838. Who is eating "Coronation Quiche"? It seems like such a weird choice but I believe that Charles and Camilla wanted a food souvenir that could be enjoyed by all their subjects, including those who follow difference dietary customs. Quiche includes eggs and cheese but it can be modified with plant-based substitutes for vegans. Coronation Pizza (with or without pineapple) would have been a better menu item.😁
I’m going to make it- I like all the ingredients 😁 Am not so sure what some of my friends will think😁- we’re all watching together 🎉
I'd have preferred pizza too (with pineapple), but each to their own I guess. 😅
Bravo HC. A brilliant presentation of an important event in the continuing history of Britain. Excellent explanations and vivid descriptions abound. Thank you so much. I will be watching on TV and holding a street party with my neighbours, where I expect humongous amounts of merriment (we love a good party)! Hoping you also have a great day. 🤴🎂🥂🍸🎉👑
Thanks Elisabeth. I hope you have a wonderful street party. I plan to be round at a friend's house for an afternoon tea party.
9:13
This does sound interesting, definitely worth covering in detail in another video if you haven't done so already.
Also, it's weird and very telling that the only time in history there were joint monarchs of England they had Mary sit on the throne without the Stone of Scone (17:26) even though she had the stronger claim to the throne.
You know what, I'd never thought of that issue with Mary, but you're right!
Since I'm in America, it'll depend what time of day the coronation is broadcast whether or not I can watch it live. But I definitely am interested in seeing it for myself, one way or the other. Last year, I happened on the video of the service for the re-interment of King Richard III. I'm not a big fan of his, but I was moved to tears at the solemnity of it all. I clicked on the video with no intention of watching the whole thing, and ended up staying until the end, and actually being sorry it was over. The British do these things so well. However, I did not watch much of the late Queen Elizabeth's II's funeral because I was so unutterably sad to see her passing, I just couldn't bear it.
I don't think a separate coronation is warranted, but I do think it would be nice to see some type of homage paid to history by including, within the king's coronation in the abby, a separate ceremony performed with the Scottish regalia. However, I'm guessing this may not be possible since it would mean the Scottish regalia would have to be transported to London for the occasion. But I would argue, that since the stone of scone could be borrowed, the regalia might as well be too.
I just looked it up, and it's going to happen at 5am Eastern! I really would like to see it, though, being such an historic even (after all, I think pretty much all of us have only known one monarch!), but man that wakeup call's gonna be rough!
@@veryberry39 Yeah, I'm not sure I'll be in the mood to appreciate the history at that hour. Lol. Thanks for the info.
Yes, it is very early in the day for anyone west of the UK. It starts at about 10am here and I thought that seemed pretty early too when you consider that that means all the spectators and people inside the Abbey will have to be in place hours earlier.
Does anyone know how to view it here in the US? I’m usually up at 5. Will it be on the BBC UA-cam channel?
Fun fact: Emma Morano is the last person from the 19th century.
I am very much looking forward to the Coronation. I'm 62 and for me it's a historical event that I don't want to miss - I'm also a monarchist. I'm going to be watching it at home on the TV as I don't want to miss one-second of it. My mum (born 1940) remembers the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, mum was 13 at the time, she was a 'Girl Guide' and remembers watching it on her grandfathers 'new TV' and wearing her Girl Guide uniform and also many neighbours joining them to watch it on TV and then everyone having a celebration - I think we'd call it a street party today.
I'm looking forward to it too. It's rare to knowingly get to witness history.
@@HistoryCalling I agree, it's a real life 'history calling' event.
😅
I’m so excited for this!! Being younger than 70 years, this is my first such event- granted, I’m not gonna be there, but uk-
Same here. It's rare to get to knowingly watch history being made.
Thank you for the information on the history of coronations. Highly educational.
Thanks Katherine :-)
(Im not trying to be bossy) but if you cant make a Lost Dress Of Elizabeth I video, then can you please do a video about Lady Katherine Grey's life? Thank you for reading this!!
Haha, I won't take it as being bossy. I appreciate your enthusiasm for the Tudor era. I'll see what I can do.
@@HistoryCalling thank you History Calling!!
You did the history of Coronations justice. Very well presented and incredibly informative and interesting.
Thank you so much 😀
I'm not old enough to have watched the late QE II's coronation so I'll for sure be watching Charles's just for the pomp and circumstance of it all!
Same here :-)
Ancient Rome had poop stoppers meds for their animals for parade so I think the horse world have not pooped when the knight threw down to see if anyone was against the king.
Haha, I didn't know that. Poor horses. They were probably constipated for ages.
Hi HC, great to watch it again tonight. Even better the second time round. Full of detail and interesting facts.
Thanks.
Thanks so much James :-)
Thank you for another delightful presentation! A coronation anywhere in a democracy is a non-thing. It's only for show, and only takes place at the consent of the people, provided they are willing to live with a monarch and to pay for the huge party. Therefore, there is no "ought" about any kind of coronation in Scotland or anywhere else. That said, I intend to get up at 2 a.m. and watch the whole thing live because I do love a good show! Also, the live feed may show those unexpected and delightful little human moments, visual bloopers if you will, that never appear in the replays. At Charles' wedding to Diana for example, the camera caught the Queen in an unguarded moment at Buckingham Palace waiting for the wedding coach to arrive. She had a wide-legged stance, hand on hip, clearly in charge and vigorously directing where people should stand and how the coachmen should draw the horses up to the porte-cochere. I loved it! It was never shown again.
😁love the thought of that!
I have to try to find the Queen's unguarded moment now!
@@HistoryCalling I doubt you will find it. I imagine it was deleted! But I loved it because she wasn't being demure, she was being the boss!
The best and clearest treatment of a complex ceremony. Very well done.
Thank you so much 😀
I still have my coins with Elizabeth the second-and I'm an American.
Yes, it'll be ages because her coinage goes out of circulation (unless coins are abolished that is!)
Hope you have a nice weekend from Bea
Thank you :-)
Timely, informative and entertaining! A trifecta of excellence, HC. 👏👏
THANK YOU STEPHEN for your continuing generosity. Yes, we're heading into coronation fever (just a mild fever I promise) here on History Calling over the next week. You'll see what I mean tomorrow.
Excellent content as usual. I read that the peerage won’t be doing the coronets and I’m a little disappointed.
Only 20 peers have been invited at all this time. The list of guests has been shrunk from 8,000 (for Elizabeth II's coronation) to 2,000 for Charles's.
Yes, I wouldn't have minded seeing that myself.
Really fascinating! Absolutely love your channel! 🎉🎉 Thankyou 👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you so much 😀
That was very interesting. We don’t hear the smaller facts . Thanks 😊
Thanks Carol. Glad you enjoyed it :-)
Hello carol, how are you doing?
Beautiful presentation…
Thank you …
Thank you so much 😀
For tradition's sake it might be good to have a separate English and Scottish coronation, however, as hectic as things tend to be today this could get overly complicated.
Yes, I could imagine the cost and the bother of hosting two of them might put people off.
Many thanks again for a most informative and entertaining video. I am very much looking forward to watching the festivities next weekend. Whilst it would have been good to see the Scottish crown jewels incorporated somehow in the ceremony, I think one grand ceremony is sufficient. Best wishes to all in the UK for the upcoming coronation. 🍾🍸🥂🍰🧁🍵
Thanks Axel. Yes, I'd love to see those jewels get used sometimes too. They're just beautiful. The crown gets brought out sometimes on a cushion, but I don't think I've ever seen a monarch wear it.
Utterly in love with your channel 🩵
Thanks Donna :-)
I think it would be fun to see how Scotland would do a coronation now, if given the chance.
It would be interesting, wouldn't it? They handled QEII's first lying in state very well.
WOW! This is fantastic! I just saw a question on Quara asking about this. May I share this on Quara? Or put your page on it so others can see a very detailed and accurate answer? I won't do it without your permission.
You can certainly provide the link to the video, yes (and thank you for asking).
So interesting! I learn so much from your videos.
Thank you. I hope you get to listen to them on your commute sometimes :-)
I’m not even a massive fan of the Royal family but it will be interesting to watch if I’m not working on the day, as it is a part of History and the first for 70 years.
Yes, it's rare to get to knowingly see history being made. I'm looking forward to it too.
Thank you for the well presented information about coronations!
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you for another fine presentation HC. No I do not think there should be separate coronations. The monarch is the monarch of the U.K.
Thanks Philip. Yes, it would be very expensive and a lot of hassle, it's true. On the other hand, we'd get to have 2 parties... 😅
Nixon with those two - such a funny picture HC - I'm still chuckling at it
It is a slightly unexpected combination, I'll grant you that. It was the only copyright free image I could get of the two of them together.
@@HistoryCalling - poor Nixon - the camera was not his friend on most occasions
Wasn't George IV the last king to walk to the abbey from Westminster hall? And then back for a coronation banquet? And William IV being the first king to use the state coach for a ride from St. James's Palace?
It's been a few weeks since I put this together, but I'll have had a source for what ever info. I gave. That said, I'm certainly not above making a slip up so apologies if that is the case.
He was very fat and unfit by the time he became king! King George IV arrived at Westminster by carriage the evening before his coronation, and spent the night in the house of the Speaker of the House of Commons in Westminster Palace. So, he certainly didn’t have far to walk to the Abbey!
Great video! If I remember correctly I believe I heard that there are going to be no coronets, in fact, not many peers were invited. Considering that The Act of Union has existed since the very early 18th century, I don't believe that a coronation in Scotland is warranted. Wasn't that the point of Union?
Oh yes, the Union did make two separate coronations unnecessary, I was just curious as to whether people thought a separate Scottish one might be a nice idea.
@@HistoryCalling I suppose that holding a separate coronation in Scotland might set better with the Soctland independence movement, maybe.
I really enjoyed watching that .. thank you.
Thank you so much 😀
I have to admit that as an American, I am still very interested in this part of your history. Thank you for this and all your videos. i so very much enjoy .
Thanks Paul. I quite like the history of ceremonies in general too (not just coronations), so this was extra interesting for me for that reason. I always enjoy watching the Presidential inauguration too for example.
just makes me miss Dianna so so sad😢
What happened to her was tragic of course, but they were already divorced. She would never have been crowned Queen even if she was still alive. I'm not sure that that makes it any better mind you. She might have lived long enough to see William crowned and it would have been lovely for her to be able to see that.
I'm excited for coronation day. I'm not sure if I'll be able to watch it live, but I hope to watch it later. As always, you've given us another video that was well put together, meticulously researched, and superbly narrated.
Here in the western US, its on at like 2am or so. Thanks to my DVR, I will get to watch it later.
Thank you so much Heather. I hope you enjoy the show whenever you get to see it 😀
Happy Friday from a cool, sunny day in Central Texas.
I did read some where that the Stone of Scone left Scotland for the coronation of King Charles. I don’t know if I will be able to watch it live because of the time difference here in the states. I might watch it on replay.
Another great video.
Maybe thinking of going next year to London and Scotland. I wanted to go last year but because of Covid I went to Hawaii instead.
Great Video! Have a great weekend!
Hi Delia, you should definitely make a visit if you're able. London and Edinburgh are both brilliant and you'll not be bored in either. There's a train between the two if you don't want to have to fly between them. All that being said, Hawaii's not too shabby :-)
@@HistoryCalling Yes, by all means take the train.
Thanks for the recommendation. I was trying to figure that out because it is too expensive to fly into Scotland.
Have you ever heard of the beer flood of London 1814 ?
I haven't, but it sounds intriguing :-)
The whole thing just some silly and antiquated as hell🤣
To be fair though, everything I do here on HC is antiquated, so that's the type of thing I like 😄
I didn't watch all of King Charles III's coronation, but what I did watch was really something special to view! This video is very interesting, and I'm glad you explained it all. Thanks!
Not interested in king Charles and camilla the queen Elizabeth only wanted her to be a queen consort not the queen Charles has no respect for his mum only himself
Charles and Camilla are going exactly by what was recommended by the late Queen Elizabeth: Camilla will be crowned as a queen consort, that is a woman married to a king, not as a queen regnant, a woman who rules in her own right. Queen consorts (like the late Queen Mother) can be crowned too. Exactly what the late queen wished.
dont be silly. Try and learn someting
The photo at 20:50 shows only half of George 6th?
Hello HC & Happy Friday 😊
Hi Holly. Happy Friday to you too. Hope you have a lovely weekend and this helps to get you in the coronation mood (if you're planning to watch it next week).
Thank you so much for all your videos, I’ve been hooked for a few months now. I’m an American but find all Monarchy particularly the UK’s so incredibly interesting. I find it a bit scary that in the US our Head of State has NO reserve powers, knowing that if things reach a crisis where all the government is thrown into chaos, His Majesty can at least do some things and keep things from turning to anarchy. And then also to have it a lifetime position and reigning by consent of the people forces the sovereign to think of the long term stability of the Nation. I wish we had a similar position of oversight over here.
Much love from across the Atlantic!
I’m American. It would be a nice nod to history to have a representative of each peerage rank give an oath to the King. It wouldn’t take that long all things considered, especially since there’s no sermon. If I had any sway, I’d like to see the Duke of Kent or Gloucester make an oath for the Dukes; yes they are considered royal dukes, but they’re far enough down the line of succession to represent the peerage at large. In my opinion, anyway. As it is, we’ll only see the Prince of Wales make his oath to the King, which is nice but there won’t be a link to the nobility.
I agree with your comment about the oil - it sounds like it smells amazing :)
I'm excited because it's a part of history. Growing up, my mom followed the royals pretty closely. She and Diana were close in age, I was born the same year as William, so I've always paid attention the big events across the pond
Thank you for mentioning the Champions during the Coronation Banquet. I am a direct descendant of the Dymoke family. I know a lot about the ceremony and some interesting tidbits about what happened at some of them. It should be noted a Dymoke still holds the Championship, and that his role in the coronation today is that of the Royal standard bearer. That’s it. I liked the older ceremony better.
@History Calling. To answer your question at 8:00. Monarchs of other countries do not attend eachothers coronation as I understood during the Coronation of King Willem-Alexander of my country The Netherlands, is so the King or Queen who is to be crowned is always the highest dignitary present. This was told by Dutch TV during the coronation overhere.
Then Prince Charles was representative of the Queen.
Ahh, I see. Thank you. That makes sense. I understand Prince Albert and Princess Charlene are coming next week, but as HSHs, they won't cause such a problem.
This doesn't seem to be the case this time. King Phillipe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium are confirmed to be attending the coronation.
@@HistoryCalling That's correct. In fact the Dutch and Belgian King, as then Prince Charles did attend the coronation of the Japanese Emperor. As Emperors and Popes are considered a Higher Royal status, that made sense. Thank you again for a lovely video. I am a subsriber for a long time, but always hesitant to react. (Until now that is).
@@nicolevoussine9439 Whow, that is a break with tradition then. You are sure they will be in the abbey?
@@PatrickBijvoet Yes. I just read it is the first time in 900 years. The King and Queen of the Netherlands are attending. As is the King of Sweden. And the King and Queen of Spain.
Mary me? I mean lovely video! 😂
It is amazing to me that we have such a detailed information about every events that happened around coronation in ancient times and nowadays. Now that we learned a lot of history of coronation, I'm delighted to see that King Charles III will be anointed by holy oil and crowned in Westminster Abbey where was placed the seat of coronation chair. We wish God save the Royal Family !! Thanks a lot for this fantastic video.
I think that the loss of the King's champion bit is a shame. It's not every day one gets to see a horse with armored rider indoors 😮
Good evening to history calling from Bea
Hi Bea. Hope this helps to get you in the mood for the coronation next week (if you're planning to watch it).
This is very informative. Really brings the ceremony in focus. Will have more meaning when I watch Charles being crowned. Thanks again for your indepth knowledge and talents. Lvya much.
Thanks David. I learnt some new bits and pieces about the ceremony myself, so hopefully I'll have a better understanding of what I'm seeing on Saturday too.
Wonderful video!!!
Thank you so much 😀
I got a bit distracted when you mentioned that the anointing oil was also made up of several scents. They are all "notes" that are used in perfumery. So I began to sketch out the possible structure of a perfume using these scents. For top notes you could have neroli, sesame and orange blossom; middle or heart notes could be rose, cinnamon and jasmine; with amber and benzoin as the base notes. This would make a good commission for Penhaligon's. They have already come out with "Highgrove Bouquet," which was developed with the cooperation of Charles.
Yes, I'd love to know what it smells like. It sounds amazing. I just hope Charles doesn't have sensitive skin, but I'm sure they've checked that nothing in it bothers him.
Interesting video
Thanks Michelle :-)
One coronation is enough, as the current royal family are descendants of both the English (Tudor), and Scottish (Stuart), Royal lines, it seems redundant. I have been reading some of the other comments and I am disappointed that people do not understand the benefits of a constitutional monarchy. The Monarchy holds no real power in their own right, but the institution of “The Crown” prevents others from misusing the courts, armed forces and other bodies, which swear their allegiance to the monarch.
Yes, the pros and cons of a constitutional monarchy are something which is always widely debated and admittedly people can get quite heated about it. I believe the good outweighs the bad myself and like that we have it here in the UK and the Commonwealth, but each to their own. 😀
I will be so glad when this coronation is all OVER
Cool to hear about the history of the ceremony! I'm very taken by the description of the holy oil too, but I'm deeply disappointed we won't see the king's champion ride in, throw down his gauntlet, & threaten to fight anyone who disputes Charles' claim 😂 I have mixed feelings about modern royalty & coronations, but I LOVE the history, so since there _will_ be a coronation, I'm interested to see what goes on.
Yes, the champion on a horse (which might or might not poop on the floor of Westminster Hall) would certainly add an element of unpredictability to the whole thing. Of course, that might be why the custom was discontinued. 😅 I'm looking forward to watching it too to see how the ceremony has been updated (and for all the fashion!)
Great video
Thank you so much 😀
Did Matilda really have a difficult personality or that she didn't fit the notions of how a woman should act (i.e. she ruled as though she was a man).?
Maybe both? She had been empress and it may have gone to her head a trifle. But the unusual role for a woman must have been part of it.
I'm really curious how "Britain" came to be from "England". Not the merging, but where did the word come from and who decided it meant the group of countries? I know of Britannia, but then why was England called England at all instead of remaining Britannia?
This is a brilliant question! The word 'Britain' is an adjunct of the Goddess Bridget. Essentially, 'Bridgets' People'. The tribe where I am from is the Brigantes. Where it morphed into England is solely because of the dark ages' invasion from the Saxons, the Angles and the Jutes. Some came from part of France but essentially Germanic in origin.
We have had another name, that is 'Albion'. From the Latin meaning white. The people of the white. Simple really when they saw the white cliffs of dover as they were invading.
The influx of the invaders pushed the Celts back into remote areas such as Wales, Scotland, Cornwall and back into Eire. These are the true descendants of who we where as peoples. Tribes, if you will.
The vast majority of England actually still abides by another intervening factor, that of the Danes. The Vikings. There is a dividing line in England which marks you out. Even to this day.
This is why you get very strange accents in both the NE and the NW as opposed to the Home Counties. Its relic of a very much bygone age.
Hope this helps.
Edit: From the Angles you get England. The place of the Angles. I am sure you can see how the etymology has been corrupted.
@@theblackpearl8632 So, Angesland eventually became England? ;-))
@@theblackpearl8632 Thanks for the brilliant reply!
As a lowly American who likes to watch British shows, there are definitely times I notice the differences in pronunciations. Like Tracy Borman uses "say-z" but most others use "sez", and Robert Bartlett pronounces the "k" in "known", "knows", etc. I sometimes even have to send clips to my friend in Eastbourne to listen to and tell me what the person is saying. David Starkey pronounced "knowle" as "noe" so I had to get my friend to figure it out - because I love looking at old castles ;-))
Isn't it interesting how much correlation there is between Germany and England through the centuries?
I think Renarde has provided a better answer than I ever could :-)
I didn't remember that William 1 ' s Coronation was made memorable by burning down the town. !
Yup, it was a big day all round I'd say. Not the best start to a reign though.
Great video! Thank you
So interesting! I’m looking forward to this so much! ❤
Thank you. Same here :-)
But of course the Scottish coronation bits have had adventures. 😂
Wild adventures at that :-)
💜💜💜
I always thought the monarchy was so special. Steeped in tradition and so ancient. However now, with Charles as king it is clear they really do nothing but enjoy there vast estates and money. As Britain burns (2024),and many days went by with no word from the king I don’t know why England still supports them. After all he and the fam were at Balmoral for summer “vacation “. He finally did say something after he took advice I am assuming. But they do nothing that could not be revamped or given to parliament.
liked the video
Thanks Louise :-)
I’m so excited to see this in real time and see things we’ve only ever watched documentaries on. Thank you for another outstanding and informative video.
You're welcome. I'm looking forward to seeing it too.
I’m looking forward to Zadok the Priest. Love me some Handel.
Zadok.
@@theblackpearl8632 bloody autocarrot. Thanks will fix.
Is it just me, or is George VI's coronation picture unfortunate? It looks like a picture of a spector since the red curtain behind disguises his lower half...😱👻
Yo why is Edward named "the confesser" lol what did he confess to?
Thanks history calling! You should do audiobooks or narrating/radio things amongst that line. And I hope one day you can collaborate and team up with Dr. Mark Felton!! That would be soo awesome
Thanks
THANK YOU SO MUCH LINDA. I hope you enjoyed hearing about all the different coronations.
Poor William. He should not have to agree to back to the death any decision William makes. No offense to the motherland but Charles is pretty out there and I say that as a mayflower Seabury.
I want someone who is actual pre-Briton descent on the throne and in all powerful positions, instead of the descendants of invaders.
Some of us still know the tribes we come from by word of mouth family history, the same as some Native Americans, Africans and others. A recent study showed that most white British still have 50% ancient Briton in our DNA.
Our land has been stolen from us. That it ws long ago is neither here nor there. Stolen goods always remain the legal and lawful property of those it was stolen from. It is rightfully still ours and Monarchs and royal should be us.
I wonder if monarchs tend to find this event fun or a bother. I would have hated taking part in it as a monarch, but I imagine my sister would have a blast
I will be so pleased when this is all over. Evolving nature of the Coronation, including more into it whilst removing indigenous British
So interesting. Thank you for all your wonderful content.
Very interesting thank you.
Thank you very much 😀
Wow! Thank you for the amazing video. When is your coronation?
I find myself binge watching your videos
💚💙💜
Love the new title card!
Thank you. I felt like it needed freshened up a bit.
Always insightful. Thank you.
Well researched as always :D
Thank you very much 😀
An excellent summation - thankyou.
No. One coronation is enough. Although Charles III is their king, Scotland doesn't need one, since they're part of the United Kingdom. Some other countries, however, might have a better case for a separate coronation. These would include Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and a bunch of others.
An interesting idea. I wonder who would pay for the other coronations though and would they ship the jewels and the Stone of Scone to those other countries?
