I agree. There's nothing wrong with having people come on set to act as extras but having them get up at 5 AM and having them wait around for hours with nothing to do until they need them is kinda ridiculous.
I have an acting degree and I've done my fair share of extra work. rarely is it fun or glamorous. mostly you sit around waiting to be called to set. the biggest exception was getting to work on The Walking Dead. :)
I agree with you, but at the same time, there's a lot of work that has to be put in to costumes and makeup for all of the other extras, as well as explaining the scenes, coordinating the extras, rehearsing, shooting, reshooting, and the like.
Its a job if you actually want to start out as a "someone" if you have never been picked a major role before and they can see your background on all the extra films you have done and they will be impressed if you get in some good movies , the hollywood business is tough people and this is just one way to get in and the other 5,000 people competing for the spot.
Been an extra before and it is just like that except the pay wasn't that great because it was television rather than movies but still a 9 hour day on the set.
Wow, this job sounds depressing. You get there at 5am and do work at 3pm. What is this nonsense? Is this a job to waste your life? It's not like your being recognized for your work and your going to be in the movie for about 5 seconds. How hard could it be?

Yep. Extra are the guys you see in restaurant scenes who dine in the background. Or guys walking around the school. Extra are human props pretty much.
The end of this video is the most interesting part of being an extra..

when i go to mcdonald's, i usually get an extra sauce. i look at it differently now
Extras are usually the people that do stuff in the background

I always wanted to be an extra. Thought it would be funny to just appear in movies. But now that I know that it's a lot of waiting, nah...
"Can't act but want to be in a Hollywood movie?"

I thinki learned how to become an extra from watching Mr.Beans holiday

The best part of making a movie. The waiting.
